This week Hulk Hogan finally came clean and admitted that Darren Aronofsky wanted him to play the lead role in the 2008 critical hit The Wrestler. The role that reignited Mickey Rourke‘s career was originally meant for Hogan, at least according to Hogan. Also this week were the Oscar nominations: while many great performances were acknowledged, many were snubbed by the Academy including Michael Fassbender, who was hailed for his performance in Shame. 2011 was the year of the indie. The majority of adaptations and blockbusters all fell completely flat, and numerous big studio dramas were missing that something special. Normally I’m one to say that every year is a great year, but this is no There Will be Blood Vs. No Country for Old Men, or even Moon Vs. Inglourious Bastards. That being said, the end of this year has been packed with award-worthy films and Sundance seemed to produce a number of films that made it big throughout 2011.

Between limited releases and big studio launches, there are very few weekends where there isn’t something new out. But the weekend after Thanksgiving – much like the first weekend of a new year – is considered a dead spot. There’s already a vacuum created by the holiday weekend being over, people are likely recuperating from their families, and the only studio film being released (on nine screens) is Shame. The only possible benefit is to The Muppets, which may have enough goodwill to take the top spot from Breaking Dawn. Let’s get to it, shall we?

This week in theaters, Shame, the already multiple award-winning film, directed by Steve McQueen and starring Michael Fassbender hits theaters with a whole lot of sex, emotion and fine filmmaking. McQueen and Fassbender have already proved that they’re a powerful duo with Hunger and now they’re back to show us what they’re made of. The NC-17 rating will likely scare away some viewers, but it really shouldn’t. The topic of this film is extremely relevant to a major societal issue taking place today, and the way the film is shot (nudity and all) represents the honest and raw portrayal of the emotions of the story you’re seeing on screen. It’s a provocative film in many ways and well worth checking out, that is, if you’re willing to go on the journey…

The cast of Steve McQueen’s latest feature Shame just picked up an Oscar nominee. According to Variety, Carey Mulligan has joined the film alongside Michael Fassbender who will play the lead. Mulligan has been on a roll as of late, she recently landed the coveted part of Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby.
