The CW Is Launching A ‘Sex And The City’ Prequel Set In High School

As we reported back in February, a television show prequel to Sex in the City was rumored to be in development. And now, after forever scarring pop culture with the hideousness that was Sex and the City 2, the NYC gals characterized in the show are returning—for a show set in high school on the CW. God help us all. At least it doesn’t feature vampires.

According to The AV Club:

“Against the protestations of original Sex And The City producer Michael Patrick King and star Sarah Jessica Parker, The CW is forging ahead with The Carrie Diaries, which will chronicle the fumbling high school sex Carrie Bradshaw had in conjunction with a totally different city—specifically, a small New England town.”

You can’t hear it, but I’m sighing so loudly that it sounds like my lungs just broke the sound barrier in my apartment. Seriously, this just can’t be good for humankind. Wasn’t that horrible sequel enough?

“Gossip Girl’s Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are handling the project, and although none of the series’ original players are so far attached in any capacity, a rights deal with HBO will allow them to “incorporate characters, traits and developments introduced on the Sex and the City series along with the core source material, Bushnell’s book,” thus maintaining the rich mythology that is so crucial to the Sex And The City universe.”

So there you have it—our long national nightmare, thought to have ended with Sex and the City 2 (in which, for the love god, the gals decide to visit the Middle East, and yet somehow don’t precipitate World War III) looks like it is going to continue for a little bit longer.

Sex and the City Prequel with Blake Lively on The Way?

After Sex and the City 2, we unanimously decided that the franchise had run its course. The movie wasn’t a worthy follow up to the first one or the TV series, so a lot of us cut our losses and moved on. Unfortunately, everyone doesn’t feel that way, and they want to continue beating this dead horse. According to an Australian entertainment site called Grazia, a Sex and the City PREQUEL may be in the works.

The site claims that “Gossip Girl” star Blake Lively is in the running to play a young Carrie Bradshaw, the role made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker. Apparently, Hollywood wants to try their hand at adapting The Carrie Diaries and Summer in the City. They’re the prequel novels written by author Candace Bushnell, that follows a 19 year old Bradshaw.

Michael Patrick King has already expressed interest in taking on the younger version of the character, and he wants Lively as Carrie. After the flailing outcome of SATC 2, it doesn’t look like any of the actresses who appeared in the films are interested in making the series a trilogy, so we’re not surprised by this move.

“There are no plans to bring SJP and the other girls back together in the old format,” says an insider. “The prequel is about breathing new life into the story and exploring Carrie’s first few months in NYC and the beginning of her relationship with an older man.”

We can honestly say we’re not interested in this. We doubt Lively would sign on to play a character, who’s so similar to her role on GG. Also, her film career is blossoming and she has a variety of scripts coming her way. This would be a step back for her.

Sex and The City 2: Movie Review

Ladies, retire your Cosmopolitans and put the stilettos back in the closet because Sex And The City 2 marks the end of an era. Sadly, HBO’s favorite foursome don’t go out with a bang. Other than their fabulous array of designer clothing, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Catrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon do little to keep the audience aroused.

The Plot:

It’s been two years since Carrie and Big tied the knot and Anthony and Stanford are next in line. Now that every major character aside from Samantha has graduated from single life, she suggests that the girls join her on a business trip to the Middle East – all expenses paid. Charlotte is stressed with motherhood and threatened by the “hot” nanny, Miranda has just quit her job at the law firm, and Carrie is smelling a little boredom on Big’s side of the bed. The change of scenery inspires adventure, dramatics, and obviously a fashion frenzy.

The Bad:

Location: The film is entitled Sex And The CITY, not Sex And The Middle East. Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte are nothing without that New York energy. The city plays such a prominent role in the lives of these women that removing it from the film removes the flare and vivacity that made the television series a phenomenon and these characters so iconic.
No Spark: The seemingly effortless chemistry that existed between these four women felt totally exhausted, and each of them seemed devoid of character in general. The performances were awkwardly forced and the usual spunk and distinction these women used to possess felt very contrived. Parker, Catrall, Nixon, and Davis have undoubtedly outgrown these roles.
Unnecessary: The last film didn’t call for an extension of any sort, so a second film seemed unnecessary in general. This movie didn’t enhance these women or their stories in anyway – it just felt like excess garbage and an opportunity for the studio to make more money.

The Good:

Fashion: Laugh at me, but the wardrobe choices were incredible. No surprise there.

Overall:

Fans of the series and first film will be incredibly disappointed with this sequel. Sorry, but it’s the truth.

Rating: 1/10

This weekend Sex and the City 2 will hit theaters going toe to toe with Disney’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Unlike the latter SATC, will debut on Thursday, May 27th as opposed to Friday, which will give it a one day advantage over the competition. The official premiere took place in New York City and everyone came dressed to the nines including the four main ladies from the cast. Take a look…

In the sequel to the 2008 film, the women are going through some serious changes and we’re not talking about menopause. Carrie and Big are married but are losing their spark, Charlotte is being over run by her children, Miranda is overwhelmed by work, and as usual Samantha is trying to hold on to her fleeting youth.

All the ladies from the film looked great and the guys didn’t look too shabby either. Our favorite pick is Sarah Jessica Parker’s yellow dress. She’s the only one who dressed in bright colors, which makes her stick out of the bunch. On the guy front, we have to give Chris Noth a round of applause for his suit. They don’t call him “Big” for nothing.

Golightly makes the top of our list because she’s been often imitated but NEVER duplicated.

New Sex and The City 2 Poster – The Girls Are All Here!

A new poster has been released for Sex and the City 2 and it features Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte. The first two teasers only highlighted Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw and now the other ladies are getting in on the action. Even though the gang’s all here they’re hard to recognize because they’ve been photoshopped to death. Everyone in this poster looks like they got attacked by a Crayola crayon…

Who are these women? Are they supposed to be the actresses we all know and love because they look like CGI animations. Sometimes the people in the photo editing department need to layoff the airbrush tool, it’s not helping! Kim Catrall looks like Sharon Stone in this poster and Parker looks like a banshee. It’s so unnecessary because all four of them are beautiful without all of the “additional help.”

Pick of the Week: Sex and the City

This was a tough one since all four movies were good but with the sequel coming out next month, it is only right that you make sure you have seen the original Sex and the City film. Michael Patrick King brought the lives of America’s favorite (at least for women in America) HBO show to the big screen. It’s emotional, it’s fun to watch, it’s something all women should see at least once.

George Clooney can do no wrong as he proved with Up in the Air also starring Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick. Pick of the Week: American Gangster

The crime drama featuring the talented Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe shows the other side of the American dream. It is set in 1970′s America and tells the story of a detective trying to bring down a drug empire. Ridley Scott directs the film that is made for a more mature audience with all of its violence, drug content and language but definitely worth seeing.

New Sex and the City One Sheet

Sex and the City fans are patiently counting the days until May 27th when their favorite foursome will hit the big screen with their latest off the wall adventure. Months ago the studio released a teaser poster for the sequel, which highlighted Sarah Jessica Parker in all white and the latest one sheet features her dressed to the nines with color, sparkles, silver, and gold. Take a look…

She has the hair, the clothes, and the attitude so what trend will Carrie Bradshaw start this time around? Sex and the City 2 will once again take the ladies to a foreign land for some well deserved R&R. They’re all stressed out from their relationships, their work, and their children and it’s time for a break. With cameos by Victoria Beckham and Miley Cyrus among others, this film is poised to do big things and go way over the top.

Speaking of over the top, check out this poster. Is it just us or does it look like Parker was airbrushed by the Crayola Crayon people? There’s nothing real about this photo and we’re scared to see what the other three ladies will look like on theirs.

Official Sex and The City 2 Theatrical Trailer

Holy middle age women Batman, the first theatrical trailer for Sex and the City 2 has been released! After a long and drawn out two year hiatus those New York fashionistas are ready take the city by storm…again. With the return of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda comes more problems, more men, and of course more shopping because apparently they’re the only people in the country who weren’t hit by the recession.

It’s been a while since we’ve submerged ourselves in the phenomenon that is Sex and the City but it looks like the jokes and the premise are all the same. How many times are we going to hear about Samantha’s slutty lifestyle? We get it, you no longer have a gag reflex, can we move on now? And how many random cameos do you need to make a movie work? Liza Minelli and Miley Cyrus both make appearances and Penelope Cruz shows up as a woman who catches Big’s eye.

The only positive thing about this sequel is the return of John Corbett’s character Aidan. He’s an interesting monkey wrench to throw into Carrie’s relationship that might make the movie bearable to watch. Other than that it looks like the same rehashed story we’ve seen before, a group of friends going on vacation to find themselves. Are we supposed to be impressed?

Sarah Jessica Parker’s Sex and the City Poster

For those of you who are adamant followers of the Sex and the City franchise, here’s something that will make your day. The first teaser poster for the movie has been released and it features Sarah Jessica Parker as writer and style icon, Carrie Bradshaw. The poster debuted over at Moviefone, and its a lot of razzle and even more dazzle.

The fashionable foursome, Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte will have a new batch of problems to deal with when the sequel hits, but unfortunately we can’t give specifics. An official plot synopsis hasn’t been revealed yet, but that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating what they think will happen. Many celebrity cameos have already been noted including former Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham, Disney teen queen Miley Cyrus, and Oscar winner Penelope Cruz who’s set to star as Mr. Big’s mistress.

The first poster only highlights Carrie so perhaps a slew of character banners are set to follow that will feature the other women. The returning cast will include Kim Cattrall (Samantha), Kristin Davis (Charlotte), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda), and Chris Noth as Mr. Big.

The scheduled release date for Sex and the City 2 is May 28, 2010.

Sex and the City Sequel on the Horizon… or is it?

With numerous sequels like Spiderman 4, Batman 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 4 (maybe) in the works, it’s hardly surprising that writer Michael Patrick King has revealed that he is working on a followup to Sex and the City: The Movie.

Shooting for the film could begin this summer with a tentative release date in 2011. However, there are a few discrepancies among actors concerning the validity of the film’s release.

Leading lady Sarah Jessica Parker seemed aware of plans for the film when she mentioned to a Fox reporter at a party last week that she was excited to see what King would come up with.

But in an interview E! Entertainment, Chris Noth, who plays Mr. Big, said he doesn’t “think it’s gonna happen.” Evan Handler, who plays Harry Goldenblatt in the first film and TV series, also expressed uncertainty:

“I don’t know anything about it but what I hear in the press,” Handler said. “I have no idea whether it will happen or not.”

The first Sex movie has managed to gross more than $152 million so far, so the likelihood of an upcoming project looks promising. “Sex and the City” author Candace Bushnell will release a prequel book series called “The Carrie Years” in autumn of 2010, which will reveal how in high school, Carrie ”began observing and commenting on the social scene.”

The release of either a Sex and the City 2 or a prequel film seems inevitable, but let’s face it folks, sequels/prequels are just as dangerous to the film industry as remakes. Take Star Wars for example – we were all sad about those prequels. But Star Wars didn’t have any sex scenes (maybe ol’ George shoulda loosened up his morals a bit), and there’s plenty to go around in the “Sex and the City” series. Fans will just have to hope there’s enough steamy action in the sequel to keep “the City” exciting.

This Week on DVD: The Dark Knight, Horton Hears a Who, The Wire

“The Dark Knight”

Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine

There’s only one DVD release this week that matters and it’s this one, right? Right? I mean, this is the only DVD release that matters for the rest of the year. For the rest of the decade. For the rest of time. This is the greatest movie ever made. If you didn’t see it fifteen times in the theater you deserve to be tarred and feathered. If you didn’t dress like The Joker for Halloween, there’s something wrong with you. Hell, if you even watched another movie in the theater this year you were wasting your time. Why would you see something else when you could be seeing this impossibly perfect epic one more time? You’re a fool. Yes, I’m talking to you. The person who didn’t go to the midnight show. The person who didn’t see it three-dozen times. The person who hasn’t thought about this DVD release every day for the last few months.

Obviously, the preceding paragraph was meant as satire. But for those who actually echo those sentiments (and there are thousands) you can pick up a single-disc edition or a two-disc special edition. Just try not to trample anyone on the way to the store.

“Horton Hears a Who”

Voices of: Jim Carrey, Steve Carrell, Seth Rogen, and Jonah Hill

This isn’t the typical movie discussed in this column, but does it allow the raising of this question: Is Jim Carrey even the biggest star in this film? Is he even in the top 3? You’d certainly have to say that Carrell’s star has exceeded his “Bruce Almighty” cast mate’s with the success of “The Office”, “Get Smart” and “Little Miss Sunshine”, but what about Rogen and Hill? “Knocked Up” anyone? “Superbad” anyone? “Pineapple Express” anyone? Meanwhile, Carrey’s last big hit was “Fun with Dick and Jane”. Did we ever think we’d see a movie in which Carrey wasn’t even in the top 3 of comedy stars in the film? Good thing they chose Amy Poehler instead of her “SNL” chum Tina Fey or he’d be struggling to stay in the top 5.

No matter which star you think is biggest, you can buy this in a single-disc or two-disc special edition.

“The Wire”: The Complete Series

By now, you’ve probably heard the hype. You’ve probably heard that this is the best show of all time. That nothing’s ever come close, and it will be hard to top in the future. Unlike, “The Dark Knight”, none of this seems like hyperbole to those who have enjoyed this show. It is brilliant. It is damn near perfect. The way it perfectly dissects the underbelly of America, the part we’d rather ignore, from all angles is like nothing you’ve ever seen. Plus, it’s incredibly entertaining. It’s funny, it’s filled with suspense and raw human emotions explored with an honesty hard to find on the small screen. If you’ve never watched “The Wire”, this 23-disc set is the perfect way to get started. Once you do, it’s all you’ll want to talk about.

Even though we’re just a few weeks from Christmas, these are the only two special editions being released today unless you count some re-releases that now included a “Digital Copy”. Seriously, if you can’t figure out a way to rip a DVD onto your computer and then your iPod, then you should pay triple what they’re asking. But, I digress.

So here’s what we have. Two three-disc editions of movies that came out on DVD in the last few months. Time to complain. Time to complain about the ridiculous DVD pyramid scheme. Why do studios insist on shoving first a bare-bones, then a two-disc and then some ultimate edition down our throats in consecutive months? Well, of course it’s to jip saps into buying all three editions, but for the more savvy consumer (which we’re all beginning to become) it just creates a ridiculous waiting game while we anticipate the real DVD coming out.

Personally, I haven’t bought a DVD 6 months after the first edition was released in years. I hesitate to buy a movie that was released this decade even. Too many times I’ve bought a nice collector’s edition only to find out 3 months later it was obsolete. It’s scary. It’s almost impossible to buy a DVD with any level of security anymore as the next edition may be lurking a few weeks away.

Anyway, if you feel secure enough that these are the ends of the line for these movies, you can buy the ultimate sets for “I Am Legend” and “Sex and the City”. Personally, I feel like a 4-disc set might hit around Valentine’s day.

HORRIBLE STRAIGHT-TO-DVD OF THE WEEK

“Johnson Family Christmas Dinner”

The reason this movie takes the prize is because of its full title: Black Christmas Movies Presents: “Johnson Family Christmas Dinner”. What is Black Christmas Films? Is it a new production company? Is it some new genre?

The real question is can we look forward to other ethnic holiday productions from studios that only make films featuring a specific race about a specific holiday? Such as:

Asian Thanksgiving Movies Presents: “Turkey Day with the Nguyen Family”
White Fourth of July Movies Presents: “Fireworks with the O’Connors”
Latino Easter Movies Presents: “The Great Hernandez Egg Hunt”
Indian Arbor Day Movies Presents: “The Patels Plant a Tree”

It could go on forever!

I personally think from now on every holiday film should be qualified with the race of the main characters and the holiday they’re celebrating. Because a DVD cover featuring 10 African-Americans and a title containing the word “Christmas” really isn’t clear enough.
