Kim Kardashian is switching gears from reality TV star to certified actress. She’s been cast in a legitimate Hollywood film, not spoof — a real movie! Also, Charlie Sheen‘s heading back to television (after being replaced on “Two and a Half Men”), Sean Penn‘s ready to direct and two new movie posters have hit the net.

Kim Kardashian: The Magic Johnson of Reality TV is hitting the big screen. Kim K has been cast in Tyler Perry‘s next movie The Marriage Counselor. EW reports that Kardashian will play a co-worker of the title character.
New Year’s Eve: Director Garry Marshall is bringing together as many actors as he can for his upcoming movie New Year’s Eve. A new poster for the film has been released, and there’s a total of 19 actors on it. Yes, actually on it! You can see it below.

Sean Penn: Sean Penn is returning to the director’s chair. This time he’ll be working with Robert DeNiro and Kristan Wiig in The Comedian, which centers on a faded comic who gets stuck doing community service and falls for a red head. Back in May, Martin Scorsese was rumored to direct, but that is no longer the case. While Penn is no Scorsese, he’s shown promise like with his 2007 feature Into the Wild. Good luck to him!
Shame Gets Rating: This was bound to happen to film about a sexaholic. Steve McQueen‘s Shame has been slapped with a NC-17 by the MPAA. In the film, Michael Fassbender plays a sex addict living in New York City. With the rating, Fox Searchlight won’t be able to make the big bucks because a most theaters refuse to carry anything beyond an R.
Charlie Sheen Is Coming Back to TV: Charlie Sheen is still winning! The former “Two and a Half Men” star is coming back to television after getting the boot. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sheen will star in a new show called “Anger Management” for FX. The series will be based on the 2003 Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson movie of the same name.
My Week With Marylin: Michelle Williams looks absolutely gorgeous in the new poster of My Week With Marilyn. She’s almost a spiting image of the late actress. Check it out.

Tree of Life: Movie Review

In 2010, there was word that Cannes was holding up announcing their slate in hopes that Terrence Malick‘s Tree of Life would be ready in time. Cannes got Tree of Life- where it recieved some boos and won the Palme D’or – but a year later, as Malick and company were still deep in post-production. Most filmmakers have scant months (and sometimes weeks) to do their post-production, but such lengthy tinkering with the final cut is part of the legend of Terrence Malick, a mercurial talent who’s proved more productive over the last ten years than he had for the first thirty of his career. Tree is Malick’s fifth film, and easily his most personal. It goes out on limited release this weekend…

The Players

The Story

The film begins from the perspective of the mother (Chastain), who briefly recounts her childhood, and then is faced with the death of one her children (some have suggested it was suicide, the period of the film and the telegram suggests a war-related death). The film then moves to the viewpoint of Jack (Penn), who lives in the present time and reflects on his childhood (where he’s played by McCracken) and his brother, which then leads to him thinking about the creation of life on Earth (yes, there are dinosaurs). His father (Pitt) is temperamental and obsessed with doing better, but also with a sensitive side – he plays the organ at church, and loves his classical music. The film presents the memories and thoughts of the experience of growing up in Waco, Texas in the 1950′s in the context of life’s eternal questions.

The Good:

The Cinematography: Working with Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki for the second time, Malick and Chivo have mastered the look they want. The film was shot with steadicams and using nothing but natural light. The thought process for period films has long been to go with an amber hue, as if the past has yellowed like old newspaper, but natural light proves just as evocative – especially for childhood. There is a great logic to that: Childhood has no artificial lights. Regardless, the look of the film helps create the right tone.
Malick is Aiming for the Fences: Terrence Malick has been working on this film in one form or another for most of his career. In Tree of Life - instead of putting his themes and concerns into a genre piece or exploration of history – he decides to make a film that seems largely autobiographical (it’s hard to say how much as Malick no longer gives interviews). Regardless, this is Malick at his most pure – for better or ill – and from the questioning narration to the elliptical style, this is the work of someone who is putting it all out there. Some have been annoyed by the lack of humor (there are funny bits here and there), but the tone is right – this isn’t a standard film in any way. By connecting a single life to the creation of the cosmos, the film wrestles with what it means to be a kid, what it means to be a son, what it means to exist, and what there might be in the next world or life. Compared to something like The Hangover Part II, this is something entirely removed from modern cinema, but even in the context of our great artists who eschew more commercial enterprises (like, say, David Lynch), this comes across as both singular and the natural extension of what Malick’s been building to in his career.
The Singularity: America has had its experimental filmmakers, but it’s hard to compare Tree of Life to anything by Stan Brackage. The easiest analogy is probably Stanley Kubrick, and his 2001: A Space Odyessy, but where that film doesn’t explain itself neatly, it’s a different beast entirely. Other comparisons (to either the work of Andrei Tarkovsky, or Gaspar Noe’s recent Enter the Void) only point out the differences in approach. There is no real mystery to what’s on screen, but how sequences fit together and what is to be taken is up for grabs. The fun of the film is putting those pieces together. I watched the film twice, and on second pass, the film coalesced in ways it hadn’t before – when you’re dealing with a filmmaker working in a language that is either never or rarely on the big screen, it’s that much harder to know how to read that film. To that end, the film has a number of key symbols, from the flame that opens the movie and repeats a couple of times in the film, to the attic where it is at one point empty and at another point has a young kid riding a tricycle and a tall man who barely fits in the room. What does this mean? The film doesn’t tell you. Some may see it as weirdness (and there is a creepy clown in the film, though what childhood didn’t have one of those?) or pretension, but it can just as easily be read as symbolism, where the attic (which none of the main cast enter) represents a moment in a child’s life where one is torn between remaining a child and growing up. Of course, that’s just an interpretation. Some images (like a child emerging from water as a baby is born) are more obvious. There’s moments of great poetry – like shots of the mother floating in the yard – that have lingered in my memory longer than most films. But Malick’s choice to not tell a narrative with the standard three-act structure means that many are going to bored with the wistful imagery that builds but doesn’t do so through a standard plot.
Brad Pitt: Pitt does some of his best work in this film. He transforms himself into that strong father figure who’s filled with violence, doubt, resentment and love. But like many Malick performers, his look is perfect. When he’s wearing glasses and has that old man’s crew cut, he becomes that father figure.
The Children: Child actors are difficult, but the people Malick got for the children, especially McCracken and Laramie Eppler as the ill-fated brother, have a great realism on screen. Sure, they act like Malick protagonists, but as McCracken comes to understand morality and sexuality, you are never conscious of him acting. And when there’s a group of boys running around and destroying things, it feels so right.

The Bad:

The Roarshach Approach: Though I can say I was “entertained” watching this movie, this is not – as should be evident by now – a film that is like anything else that’s going to be released by a major studio this year. Critics have been divided on this one, and so will audiences – even some Malick die-hards don’t care for the movie. Boring, like funny, is in the eye of the beholder. None of this is a knock against the movie but with a film this vast and challenging, insta-reactions are going to cover the map. But great art doesn’t always congeal immediately. After a second pass I felt like I had a better handle on what I was seeing, but on first pass I was blown away, and slightly confused. Does the film add up? Does it need to? If most cinema is done in prose, Malick wrote a poem of a movie, and with anything so outside of the normal context, it’s that much harder to dissect. To that end, I’ve given a number of Tarkovsky films a look, and have never warmed to them, even if I know something is there. This is a terrible movie if you want to go just for a couple hours of escapism, but as an experience, it’s indelible.
Expectations: They’re a hassle. For those looking for a lot of Sean Penn, you’re going to be disappointed, and few films like this grab you by the short hairs and scream “You’re watching one of the greatest films ever made!” The film is a meditation, as such it’s pleasures are going to be more quiet. Than, say, Christopher Nolan at his best.

Overall:

Tree of Life left me shaken, somber, thoughtful, and reflective. There are shots in this film that are magical, that made a mark on me. This is a film that I will revisit again and again – as I have most of Malick’s films - and though it’s hard to say if this is one of the greatest films ever made or anything like that right now, it’s a strong work that will be remembered and championed long after the majority of what came out this month (or any month this year) have been forgotten.

Score: 10/10

Paolo Sorrentino’s This Must Be the Place Has Sean Penn in Robert Smith Garb

Another Cannes “In Contention” title is Paolo Sorrentino‘s This Must Be The Place. The film follows Sean Penn as an older musician who’s now getting old and is out of sorts. Something of a Lost in Translation vibe. The film also stars Kerry Condon, Judd Hirsch, Frances McDormand, Harry Dean Stanton and Shea Whigham, and features music by David Byrne and Will Oldham. An outtake was found by The Playlist. Check it out.

Though this isn’t even a trailer, I like the tone and vibe of what I’m seeing, though that could be the influence of the music. David Byrne, and his work with Talking Heads is some of the best music to come out of the 70′s and 80′s, and it’s good to see him work more within the confines of American music. Then there’s Will Oldham, better known as Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, who’s also a sometime actor, and all-around great.

With the film’s talent roster, it looks like more than the one note joke that Penn’s fright-wig may suggest, and the film was accepted by Cannes for competition. Then again, so have a number of films that were received terribly there (Southland Tales, The Brown Bunny).

Christian Bale And Sean Penn To Join Forces In Most Intense Film Ever?

OK, so imagine this film: two Americans—one is a journalist, and the other is retired soldier—who join forces to rescue a kidnapping victim in Afghanistan. And Zack Snyder came up with it. And 300 screenwriter Kurt Johnstad wrote it. And the Christian Bale would play the reporter “who witnesses and is the only survivor of an attack on a group of Americans.” And Sean Penn now may play a retired Special Ops soldier who “comes to the scene determined to free a family member who has been kidnapped.” Translation: the most intense film ever made.

/Film has it that the film, The Last Photograph, kicks off when “the journalist agrees to help identify the kidnappers and travel the rough terrain to find them, in exchange for the story. The road brings them in confrontation with tribal regions of Afghanistan, and none of the diplomats will help.”

Oh, and if that isn’t intense enough, the director of the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Niels Arden Oplev, is set to direct. Expect whole audiences’ heads to explode, Scanners-style, around the half-hour mark of The Last Photograph, when the fifteenth screaming match in the film between Christian Bale and Sean Penn proves simply to be to insanely intense for human eyes to handle.

The Tree of Life Poster, Possibly Troubling U.K. Release Date

In America, we’re less than two months away from the release of Terrence Malick’s long-in-gestation The Tree of Life, which is due May 27. Cannes is supposed to get it before that to show as one of their premieres, but it seems the U.K. release patten might dampen that as (according to Empire) it’s supposedly getting the film on May 4. This U.K. release date coincides with the film’s second poster, which was provided by the IMDb. Take a look…

This is the sort of poster that tends to look better in a full size in a theater where each image can be considered. It does get across that this is an arty film, one that won’t offer movie star turns from leads Sean Penn or Brad Pitt. But this is the sort of film that its core audience doesn’t need a poster because it’s a new Terrence Malick. I don’t know how well this sells the films to people who don’t care.

As for the British release date, my guess is that gets fixed quickly. Though some films have come to Cannes after other festival screenings, they – like so many other festivals – want their exclusives, and England getting the film for two full weeks before it can show at the fest is not going to go over well. If the U.K. release date holds, then the film definitely won’t be in competition – which points out that whether it’s competing is still unknown.

That noted, it’s also unlikely that the director will show up. He didn’t show up for the Oscars, so it seems likely – especially since he’s in the midst of his next production – he won’t go for this. Or perhaps Cannes is something he respects, and maybe he needs to pay lip service to his financiers. If he goes, expect a number of new Terrence Malick pictures besides this one:

Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life Cannes-Bound

The speculation on when the world would see Tree of Life – Terrence Malick’s latest film, which stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn – became a great sport of inside baseball until Fox Searchlight picked it up and announced a May release date. For Tree of Life there were likely to be two periods of release: Cannes or award season. With the May date, it seemed the film premiering at Cannes was inevitable, and now Variety has confirmed that it will be playing the festival – though it is unknown if it will play in or out of contention.

This is interesting for a number of reasons, one of which is that the film was rumored to show at Cannes last year, and supposedly the festival held off on announcing their titles in hopes of getting Malick’s latest. But Malick – much like Hong Kong Auteur Wong Kar-Wai – is notorious for having prolonged post-production periods, as he often finds his film after he’s done shooting. The film was also independently financed, so until it was picked up by Fox Searchlight there was no definite release plan.

There was a thought – even until early December – that the film might be ready for 2010′s Oscar season. When Searchlight grabbed it that was dashed – they already had a full plate with both 127 Hours and Black Swan gunning for Oscar position (which they did), and Malick’s film looked to be too much competition for themselves. When a May release date was announced, it seemed unlikely it wouldn’t go to France first.

Cannes is a natural fit for Malick because he won a director’s prize there with Days of Heaven back in 1978. Malick is famous in film circles for having directed two films – two of the best films of that decade – in the 1970′s, and then disappearing off the scene. Rumors suggested that he was helping with re-writes without credit during that off period, but he was also known to translate philosophy. He returned in 1997 with The Thin Red Line, and since then moved on to another film in 2005 (The New World), and now has Tree of Life, and another film in production. His new dedication to cinema has proven fascinating, as Malick is nothing if not a mercurial director.

His long absence is unexplained as Malick is now notoriously press-shy, and does not talk about his work or much of anything publicly – which has also led to him not having been photographed all that much. In that way, it’ll be interesting to see if he shows up for Cannes. He’s a maverick, and that’s partly why his cult has bloomed.

In America, the release date hasn’t changed, which means it will be up against the Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2.

After a long, we do mean long wait, the first trailer for Terrence Malick’s upcoming feature The Tree of Life has been released. The film from the reclusive director stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain. Not only did Malick helm the feature but he also wrote the screenplay which centers on a man coming to terms with the tumultuous relationship he has with his father. Take a look…

“Unless you love, your life will flash by,” are the haunting words that accompany this visual feast. The composition of some of the shots are breathtaking especially the ones used in the beginning of the trailer. We’re interested in seeing the effects of Jack’s upbringing through Penn’s performance as well as the actual rearing done by Pitt’s character. How aggressive does he get with the boy? What makes him lose faith?

Synopsis:

From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950′s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick’s signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

The Tree of Life is schedule to open in theaters on May 27, 2011.

Director Doug Liman brings us quite possibly the most important film you can see this year, Fair Game starring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn.

The Plot:

CIA Agent Plame did everything she could to support her government, in fact she proved that there was a 97% chance that there would be no WMDs if we went to war. Unfortunately the government was only interested in promoting that 3% and force a country into war. Her status as a CIA agent was revealed by White House officials allegedly to discredit her husband after he wrote a 2003 New York Times op-ed piece. After being torn apart by the media, finally Plame and her husband have a chance to fight back.

The Film Good:

The Acting: This goes for everyone in the cast from Watts and Penn to the supporting cast that was on screen for two minutes. Great performances all around.
The Iconic Swap: It was interesting to see Watts taking the lead and Penn dropping back to a co-star. In many ways Watts played the role of the iconic male lead; she’s out at all hours, brings home the money and is seemingly unaware of her spouses emotions at times. Penn is the emotive character, the one who supports the lead unconditionally, the one who waits for the other one to make a move, and brings out the heart of the story. Both put in great performances, Watts proves that she is more than capable to lead the way and when you see Penn breakdown and cry you see why he wins all those statues.

The Political Good:

Penn: All billing aside, it is quite obvious why Penn took the role, aside from Milk this is quite possibly one of the most important roles he’s ever done. This is a more than just a film but a commentary on our current political situation. Aside from nailing the intricacies of the performance, which bring the whole film alive, this is a film with a purpose. While Watts character is being attacked it’s his response that the “average” person can relate to and it’s his story that makes the film so real.
Media Spin: We all know (or should know) that the media spins facts and you can never believe what you’re told on TV, BUT it’s fascinating to watch exactly how and why that’s done. In this film you get to be on the inside of the story and watch reality being twisted all around you. And as an added bonus, they threw in a great scene that shows us why the press should be hit sometimes when they attack those that are in the limelight.
Political Success: It’s hard to make a political film that deals with current events that is also interesting, poignant, entertaining and not completely self-indulgent — this film accomplishes all of that. It’s like a successful W. From showing us how the media manipulates stories, to how the government uses people to get what it wants, to investing us in the personal relationship between two characters, to making a stand on what’s right and what’s wrong, and why it’s important to fight — this film has it all wrapped up in one.
Speed: When you think back to past political cover-ups or wars, it took people decades to put all the facts together on any one situation. We already have a film with mainstream actors that will be released to mass audiences that documents events taking place in 2001-2002. The world isn’t perfect, but with the speed that people are now able to look at situations and know the truth about them is impressive and this film really sets a new bar for showing the truth as it’s going on and doing it well.

The Bad:

Nothing here!

Overall:

It’s rare that you get a fun film that also makes such an important point — and as quickly as this. Bush has only been out of office for less than two years and already we have a film documenting what went out inside the C.I.A and the Whitehouse post 9/11 and before we went into Iraq. It’s a great film and definitely worth seeing!

Top Five Election Day Movies

It has been a very strange year in politics, and it’s only going to get stranger on Election Day. Will the ever-polarizing Christine O’Donnel win? Will Sarah Palin join the cast of “Dancing with the Stars”? Will Sean Penn make an extremely controversial statement related to Hugo Chavez and human rights? All I know is this – if you are planning on watching a movie on Election Day, it should be one of the five listed below:

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

What happens when you put Frank Capra and Jimmy Stewart together? Instant masterpiece. Jimmy Stewart plays Jefferson Smith, and turns in one of the greatest acting performances of all time. Elected officials should be required to watch this movie, and remember whom they are fighting for. Jefferson Smith is the President this country deserves!

JFK

Kevin Costner was a fantastic actor in his prime, and JFK was his piece de resistance (with all due respect to Bull Durham and Field of Dreams fans). Not only was Costner in his prime, but Oliver Stone was not so bad himself. Conspiracy theorists and history buffs alike should watch JFK, and appreciate every minute of this three-plus hour masterpiece. The all-star casts includes Costner, Gary Oldman, Sissy Spacek, Jack Lemmon, and Seinfeld’s Wayne Knight.

Clear and Present Danger

If Jefferson Smith is America’s ideal President, then Jack Ryan should be his running mate. Harrison Ford is much a boy scout as he is a badass in this Phillip Noyce directed Clancy adaptation about a President who has taken matters in his own hands. Clear and Present Danger sheds some light on the cartels in South America, and their vicious battle to control the drug trade to the US, which in and of itself is relevant to modern times.

All the President’s Men

Robert Redford absolutely shines as Bob Woodward, and Dustin Hoffman as Carl Bernstein – the reporters who broke Watergate. All the President’s Men is a great example of how journalists can wield their power for good, and in the process, make a significant impact. Also, for those of you who are into contemporary history, you are probably familiar with Woodward’s recent books on Bush and Obama (which make Woodward relevant again).

The Manchurian Candidate (the original, not the crappy remake)

The last one was definitely a tough call, but I have to give the nod to The Manchurian Candidate. A sinister assassination plot + political intrigue make this nail-biter an all time classic. Definitely worth a re-watch on Election Day should you feel compelled; fantastic performance by Sinatra.

Sean Penn to Receive Hollywood Humanitarian Award

Sean Penn is an extremely talented actor, there’s no doubt about it. He’s not the most likable person but we can’t deny his work. Therefore, the two-time Academy Award winning actor has been chosen to receive the “Hollywood Humanitarian Award for his incredible selfless and dedicated humanitarian efforts in saving lives, as well as bringing relief to the human suffering in Haiti.” We bet Wyclef Jean is really pissed right about now…

The Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Awards announced the big news on Thursday via Carlos de Abreu, Founder and Executive Director of the Hollywood Film Festival.

“It is an honor to recognize the inspiring humanitarian efforts that Sean Penn and his J/P Haitian Relief Organization have been providing to the great people of Haiti,” said Mr. de Abreu.”

Apparently, Penn’s humanitarian efforts go beyond his work in Haiti, he also stepped up to the plate for the U.S. during the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans. He’s used his money and fame to bring awareness to serious issues plaguing those who can’t help themselves.

As a journalist, Penn has written for Time, Interview, Rolling Stone and The Nation magazines. In 2004, he wrote a two-part feature in The San Francisco Chronicle after a second visit to the war-torn Iraq. In 2005, he wrote a five-part feature in the same paper reporting from Iran during the election which led to the Ahmadinejad regime.

Penn’s landmark interviews with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, and Cuba’s President Raul Castro, were published in The Nation and The Huffington Post. Penn’s interview with President Castro was the first-ever interview with an international journalist.

He’s done just about everything. He may irritate the hell out of us sometimes, but his heart’s in the right place. Congrats Sean!

Sean Penn is currently on location filming his latest project, This Must Be The Place. In the movie he plays an aging rocker who has a thing for big hair and red lipstick (as you can see above). Several on set photos have been discovered via ohnotheydidnt of the Oscar winner in full costume and we’ve got them for you below…

In This Must Be The Place, Penn plays a retired musician named Cheyenne who sets out to find his father’s persecutor, an ex-Nazi war criminal now hiding out in the U.S. He’s bored, he’s rich and he’s got nothing better to do so he takes his steel-toed boots and leather jacket with him on the road to find justice. Cheyenne and his father had been estranged for 30-plus years and only in his death has he decided to make things right. Will he take the high road or choose sweet and bloody revenge?

These photos are terrifying. Hopefully, this is the closest we’ll ever get to seeing Penn in full-on drag. Certain things just don’t work for everyone.

This Must Be the Place is scheduled to hit theaters sometime in 2011 and is directed by Paolo Sorrentino, and co-stars Frances McDormand and Harry Dean Stanton.
