Is Tom Hanks Old Yeller in Stephen Daldry’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close? It seems likely. Honestly, it’s surprising that it’s taken ten years for Hollywood to make a film that uses (and perhaps exploits) the tragedy of September 11, 2001 to make a movie about death (and perhaps a chance to feel good about being alive). Hanks stars with newcomer Thomas Horn, and vets like Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis, and James Gandolfini. Take a look at the trailer…

If this trailer says anything it’s that the film is Oscar bait, and since Extremely Loud is coming out in limited release on Christmas day, that’s no surprise. This film was made to be “in contention” – as has everything that Stephen Daldry has directed. The question is if it’s shameless emotional manipulation or effective emotional manipulation. Regardless, you can’t make a movie about a dead dad and 9/11 and not be the cinematic equivalent of chopping onions.

And frankly this trailer makes this look like bad phony uplift. Maybe it’s the appearance of Max Von Sydow as the likely holy fool/old man character, maybe it’s the use of U2 and the Bono baggage that comes with it, maybe it’s the plot device of finding a home for the key, or maybe it’s every frame of this trailer. Hard to say. But how a movie is sold is not always a reflection of its qualities. We’ll know more come 12/25/11.

Sandra Bullock Gives $1 Million to Help Japanese Victims

Hollywood stars can make millions of dollars a year between films and commercials. Some make money tweeting or hosting parties. It’s good to see when they put that money to good use, and so it’s worth noting that Sandra Bullock gave one million dollars to the American Red Cross to help Japanese earthquake and Tsunami victims. So far, Bullock has offered the largest amount of any celebrity.

Knowing Hollywood, there will also be a telethon of some sort in the near future. There is little to say about the 9.0 earthquake and the aftereffects other than it’s such a tragedy that words do little justice to its enormity. For those looking to donate, the Red Cross has a website.

There are numerous organizations looking to help – though in light of some of the schemes that have come out of great tragedies, it’s always best to go with names and places you know and trust. And on the internet, always make sure that it’s an authentic connection to the relief fund, linked from an official website.

But for those who are struggling with their own finances it’s always good to see someone who has more expendable income than the average person doing what they can to help. The cynical may view this as some sort of public relations stunt – regardless, Bullock did the right thing and in situations like this that’s all that matters.

George Clooney Replaces Robert Downey Jr. in Gravity

After a tumultuous casting process, director and writer Alfonso Cuarón has found an actor who’s brave enough to take on the male lead in his film Gravity. According to Coming Soon, George Clooney will star opposite fellow Oscar winner Sandra Bullock in the sci-fi film that’s gone through more actors than we can count!

Gravity will be a 3D tale that centers on a woman stranded on a space station after satellite debris slams into it and wipes out the rest of the crew.” Robert Downey Jr. was previously signed on to star in the film after the studio gave Cuaron the green light to direct the $80 million project. He was attached to the project through multiple female cast changes including Angelina Jolie and Natalie Portman before jumping ship in November.

Gravity is expected to begin production soon, but we wonder how this movie will fit in with Clooney’s other project The Ides of March. He will both direct and star in that feature, which is set to begin filming in February 2011. What will Cuaron do? We assume that he’ll accommodate Clooney’s schedule.

Oprah Winfrey, Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep Join Comedy

What would happen if the Queen of Daytime, joined forces with the greatest actress alive and America’s sweetheart? Would the world implode? I guess we’ll find out with the upcoming comedy from Sex and the City director Michael Patrick King. The project is currently untitled but it will star Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, and Sandra Bullock.

The film will be set in the world of “home shopping” and center on three characters who were written specifically with Winfrey, Bullock, and Streep in mind. Seriously, they’ll pretty much be playing over exaggerated versions of themselves in the movie. The story will follow the women as they maneuver around marketing, marriage, and media. As if they don’t all know a little something about that.

Now that Winfrey’s talk show is in its final season, she could spare a few months to shoot a feature film. The movie will be produced by Scott Stuber and distributed through Universal Pictures.

We wonder who they’ll get to play the husbands of these women? They’re all very strong and opinionated. They’ll need some men who won’t disappear into the background when sharing a scene.

Sandra Bullock Reuniting With The Proposal Director Anne Fletcher

Last year Sandra Bullock reached a career high that was capped off with a Best Actress Oscar. She wants to keep that momentum going by sticking with those who helped her win the gold. According to THR, she plans to reunite with the woman who directed her and Ryan Reynolds in the box office smash The Proposal, Anne Fletcher.

What do these two have in mind for the future? The trade reports that Warner Bros has picked up a pitch for an untitled project from screenwriters Pamela Falk and Michael Ellis. No plot description is available but it’s described as a mix between the 1978 film An Unmarried Woman and Saturday Night Fever. We don’t know what to make of that combination but we’re going to trust their judgment.

Bullock will star in the film, while Fletcher will once again direct. “Bullock will also executive produce the project with her Fortis Films partner Maggie Biggar. Offspring’s Matt Smith also is executive producing. Sarah Schechter is overseeing for Warners.”

We wish we could be more excited for this but very little is known about the story. We’ll just have to wait and see until more details emerge. One thing is for sure, we’re very happy that Bullock and Fletcher are together again. Hopefully, they’ve still got the magic touch.

Natalie Portman Leaves Gravity, Sandra Bullock Joins?

Alfonso Cuarón has had nothing but bad luck with his developing space film, Gravity. The lead role has bounced from actress to actress, and it’s on the move again. Originally, the part was written with Angelina Jolie in mind but the actress opted not to take it, then Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively were mentioned as possible replacements, before Natalie Portman agreed to star. Unfortunately, Portman is no longer attached and according to Deadline, Sandra Bullock might take her place.

Sources claim that Portman “mulled” over the role before saying no. She’s also said to have left Pride and Prejudice and Zombies as well, with scheduling conflicts being the main reason. She and Sandra Bullock were the top contenders mentioned for Gravity after Jolie left, and now we’re hearing that the Oscar winner has been offered the part. The question is, will Bullock say yes?

Move over Ryan Reynolds and Meg Ryan, your rom-com movie partners are going on hiatus. Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks might team up for a post-9/11 drama called Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close according to a report from Variety. The duo are in talks to headline the Paramount and Warner Bros collaboration but haven’t confirmed their roles just yet.

The film will be based on the novel of the same name that was published in 2005. The story takes place in 2003 and is narrated by a 9 year old whose father died in the 9/11 attacks. It was one of the first American novels to incorporate the event into its plot. Stephen Daldry is attached to direct, even though Bullock nor Hanks have formally signed on, and the studios haven’t officially given it the green light.

Even though they’re developing the story, and have all this Oscar talent interested in the film, they might be afraid to tackle the subject matter. It’s no secret that movies that deal with the Iraq war or Middle Eastern conflict and its effect on America don’t do well at the box office. Look at what happened to Paul Greengrass’s Green Zone.

Sandra Bullock Highest Paid Actress – We Knew It!

Professionally Sandra Bullock’s career has never been better. Two out of 3 films she released last year were commercial and critical hits earning her a Golden Globe and Oscar win, and now she’s just been crowned the richest actress in Hollywood. Yeah, we knew it was coming. Oscar gold just wasn’t good enough, Bullock was behind the scenes collecting those checks! See who else made bank last year…

Between June 2009 and June 2010, Bullock earned $56 million thanks to the success of The Proposal and The Blind Side. Not only did the actress star in the films but she also produced them, which means she got a nice chunk of change on the front and back end. The Proposal grossed $320 million at the box office on a $40 million budget and The Blind Side scored an impressive $310 million. Yeah. that’s what we call making a profit.

Coming in at second place, we have a tie: Reese Witherspoon and Cameron Diaz both earned $32 million dollars. This is interesting considering Witherspoon hasn’t been seen on screen since 2008′s Four Christmases, but she did lend her voice to Monsters Vs Aliens so that’s something.

Those ladies are followed by Jennifer Aniston who earned $27 million and Sarah Jessica Parker who raked in $25 million. Aniston hasn’t had the best box office record as of late but that doesn’t stop people from signing her up for every romantic comedy known to man. Those development deals are what’s keeping her pockets nice and full. As for Parker, she gets paid for the syndication of Sex and the City and has a successful perfume.

We’re all about female empowerment here, so congrats to all these women who have earned their keep. With the utmost respect we say: Congrats, you rich bitches!

Sandra Bullock, Steve Carell Join The Abstinence Teacher

Who better to keep you away from sex than the 40 year virgin and a woman who relies on love potion number 9 to get a man? According to The Playlist, Steve Carell and Sandra Bullock will team up for a movie called The Abstinence Teacher, and yes, it’s a comedy. The duo are the latest actors to be attached to the film that’s been in development for years. Can the Oscar winner and one of the funniest comedians around get this movie pushed into production?

The film is the product of Little Miss Sunshine collaborators Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who plan on adapting the book written by Tom Perrotta. “Published in 2007, the novel revolves around a divorced sex ed teacher in middle America who is at odds with the town’s more conservative groups. At the same time, she finds herself falling for her daughter’s born-again soccer coach.”

Carell previously worked with the directors on Sunshine so his casting isn’t really a surprise and if anyone knows how to do awkward comedy with a touch of drama it’s Bullock. Perotta is attached to pen the screenplay for The Abstinence Teacher, which gives us another reason to look forward to it.

Sandra Bullock Makes a Surprise Appearance at Nashville Benefit

Sandra Bullock has been popping up all over the place these past few weeks. She appeared at both the MTV Movie Awards and the Guy’s Choice Awards, and now she’s putting on a country music concert…sort of. The Oscar winning actress headed down to Nashville, Tennessee to attend “Nashville Rising: A Benefit Concert for Flood Recovery.”

Bullock was on hand alongside her The Blind Side co-star Tim MacGraw, who was one of the hosts at the event. When she appeared on stage she was given a standing ovation from the crowd that included over 15,000 people. She attempted to perform some of the tune “Smoke On the Water”, but realized she couldn’t play a guitar and that her voice was crap. Therefore, she handed things over to Faith Hill and exclaimed, “Sign that girl right away.”

Another Hollywood star, fellow Oscar winner, and Tennessee native, Reese Witherspoon pre-taped a video message for the audience and stated, “we get together and take care of each other.” Lucky for them, all that star power worked because they ended up raising more than $2 million for those effected by the flood.

Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds Reunite for Most Wanted

Last year Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds made movie magic when they starred in the box office hit, The Proposal. According to EW, the duo will reunite for an action comedy called Most Wanted, not to be confused with the 1997 thriller of the same name that starred Keenen Ivory Wayans and Jon Voight. Most Wanted is being used as a tentative title, which we hope they change soon…

Not only will the new film reunite Bullock and Reynolds but The Proposal’s behind the scenes crew is also on board. Anne Fletcher is currently in negotiations to direct, while Reynolds will executive produce along with Mandeville Films. The whole gang’s here! All we need is slick way to get Betty White in the mix. According to their sources, Most Wanted originated from a pitch by Peter Chiarelli that was purchased by Universal for $1 million on Friday.

The film centers on a criminal (Bullock) being escorted to court by a U.S. Marshall (Reynolds). Both are ambushed on the way and are forced to go on the run. It smells like Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler’s Bounty Hunter but with less of a stench. The premises are very similar but we’re hoping there’s some type of twist in the story that separates the two.

Bullock has been on hiatus ever since her 3 film run in 2009 making this the first new project she’s officially taken on. Reynolds on the other hand — we can’t get rid of the guy! He’s currently shooting Green Lantern, which he’ll follow up with The Change-Up, a body-swapping comedy with Jason Bateman.

Only Sandra Bullock can take a truly awkward moment and make it hilarious. Last night during the MTV Movie Awards she was honored with the Generation Award, which was presented by her co-stars Bradley Cooper (All About Steve), Betty White (The Proposal), and Scarlett Johansson…wait Scarlett Johansson?! What was she doing there? While Cooper and White spoke Bullock’s praises Johansson just sat there like a stone, so they had to do something drastic to break the tension and address the elephant in the room…

When Bullock appeared on stage she said a few quick quips then looked at Johansson and said “This is so weird. Scarlett, why are you here?” Scarlett replied, “I’m here because Ryan [Reynolds her husband] couldn’t be here and I wanted to be here when you accepted your award for Best Kiss.” Sandra replied, “We didn’t win that.” Cue the clip!

As we’ve seen in the past Ms. Bullock has no qualms about swapping spit, we all remember Meryl’s “soft lips” at the Critic’s Choice Awards earlier this year (and that one wasn’t planned). Maybe that’s just how she deals with stress? It’s no secret that for the past few months the actress has been tabloid fodder because of certain events in her personal life, so she used the MTV Movie Awards to set the paparazzi and the gossip community straight.

“Number one, I am not dead. Number two, everyone has cellulite, not just me. Paparazzi need more flattering lenses. Whoever established the high road and how high it was going to be should be fired. I’ve never gone fourteen days without showering, while chain smoking, while crying on the shoulder of my sweet Aunt Luddy,” she continued. “I shower twice a day, I don’t smoke and sweet Aunt Luddy died a year ago, though I know she’s really happy just to have been mentioned.”

In true Bullock fashion, she took something traumatic and embarrassing and a turned it into a joke. She kept it light and showed that she isn’t letting her current situation get her down. Therefore, everyone can relax and let out a sigh of relief because Sandra is doing A-ok.
