Last week we reported that Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter, which opens with scenes from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, was pulled prematurely from Japanese theaters by Warner Bros. due to earthquake and subsequent tsunami which recently struck the country. Hereafter is not alone—Variety now reports that the Japanese release date for the James Cameron-produced thriller Sanctum has been indefinitely pushed back, as the film features “scenes of a cyclone hitting a South Pacific island and water rushing through a cave.”

As expected, the horror film The Roommate took the top spot during Super Bowl weekend. The film, which stars “Gossip Girl” star Leighton Meester, pulled out $15.6 million, while no other film was able to bring in more than $10 million. Also opening this weekend was James Cameron‘s Sanctum [review], but despite the higher-priced 3D tickets, the film opened with $9.2 million.

The heavily marketed “James Cameron Production” Sanctum, directed by the clearly inexperienced Alister Grierson swamps theaters this Friday. It’s safe to assume that most people would interpret Cameron’s E.P. credit as a ringing endorsement of quality cinema. Sanctum‘s Australian director Alister Grierson’s has one source of audience bait: James Cameron‘s name in enormous, bold font in the center of his billboards. The multi-Oscar winning director/writer/producer acts as an EP on this shipwreck of a film (pun INTENDED) about stranded (!!!) scuba divers. Sanctum is a not a Cameron film, it’s very much a project that he sat back on and lent his name to, but what kind of fool forgoes an opportunity to speak with James Cameron?
We were fortunate enough to sit down with the filmmaker to discuss his film. Check out the interview below…

Earlier this week, James Cameron appeared at a special 3D event promoting his latest film Sanctum. He serves as producer along with Andrew Wight, while Alister Grierson takes on directing duties. The movie is based on actual events and takes viewers into a world of cave diving and illustrates its many dangers. All three men were in attendance at Universal City Walk, where they spoke about the use of 3D in this smaller film in comparison to Cameron’s epic Avatar. Surprisingly, they all felt that Sanctum does a much better job of submerging an audience in the 3D world.
Check out some video of Cameron at the event as he explains his reasoning below…

James Cameron’s obsession with water continues with his latest feature entitled, Sanctum. The director executive produced the film that takes us cave and sea diving, with no intention of bringing us back to the surface. Yes, it’s one of those movies and the new trailer is not for the claustrophobic. And if you have a fear of large bodies of water and drowning, you might want to take a deep breath before watching. Take a look…
