Apparently, Sony agrees with our earlier news post today in which I stated that mainstream cinema only has, essentially, six primary types– films that Adam Sandler or Katherine Heigl would star in, films in 3-D, comic book adaptations, sequels, TV show adaptations, and genre vs. genre mashups—because they’ve let slip that they are working on a film that is both a comic book adaptation, a loose sequel, and something that would likely be in 3-D: a Venom film.

Though The Odd Life of Timothy Green and the nature film Chimpanzee had trailers shown (and Jennifer Garner talked briefly about Green), the majority of attention for Disney’s live Actions films at D23 went to The Muppets and John Carter. The Muppets went over like gangbusters, while Carter just busted. There was also a brief presentation on Oz: The Great and Powerful, which just started shooting. Our report follows.

Sam Raimi‘s Oz, The Great and Powerful is casting up and Mila Kunis has now signed on, according to Variety. She’ll be joining James Franco, who’s starring as the titular wizard. The film is a prequel to the classic L. Frank Baum novel and film The Wizard of Oz, and Kunis will play Theodora, a young witch who’s rebuffed by Oz and turns wicked. Last week it was announced that Spider-Man helmer Sam Raimi was offered the gig of a lifetime. He was given the opportunity to direct the upcoming Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz, The Great and Powerful. Sam Mendes was previously rumored as a top contender for the job but those talks fell through. According to Deadline, it’s been confirmed that Raimi will direct the film and Robert Downey Jr. is still attached to play the title character.

A while ago Disney announced they were producing a prequel to the 1939 MGM classic The Wizard of Oz. The film is entitled Oz, The Great and Powerful and will focus on the man behind the curtain as opposed to the girl with the ruby slippers. Robert Downey Jr. is rumored to play the title character while several high profile directors have been named as possible helmers. According to a report from Vulture, the studio has officially sent out an offer to Spider-Man and Drag Me to Hell’s Sam Raimi in hopes that he’ll take on their Oz story…
