Benicio Del Toro Plays Tough in Oliver Stone’s ‘Savages’ Trailer

Oliver Stone‘s Savages feels like a comeback. Maybe it is, in that it’s a comeback into mainstream cinema. His last film was a sequel to Wall Street, and that film has already been lost to time. This is a big crime-filled ensemble drama/action movie, and it looks like a winner (mostly). The film is due out July 6, and features Benicio Del Toro, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Salma Hayek and John Travolta. And now we have a trailer.

The crime film goes through cycles of popularity, and it’s been a while since there’s been a mainstream attempt at it. The presence of John Travolta (and Salma Hayek’s haircut) gives it the ghostly feeling of being a riff on Pulp Fiction and the multitude of films that it inspired. It’s been long enough that could feel like a breath of fresh air.

The biggest problem here seems to be Hayek, who is trying very hard to convey a dangerous woman. That moment where she takes a bite feels like it’s been coached out of her. Also, the script comes from Shane Salerno, who wrote the terrible Alien Vs. Predator sequel Requiem. Still, this looks interesting and when Stone misses the mark it’s usually a fascinating ride.

The Shrek franchise drove itself into the ground after three sequels, so perhaps the only way to go forward was a spin-off. And it’s true that one of the best things about Puss in Boots – the fifth film in the franchise – is that it never feels like a Shrek movie. The film follows the feline character (voiced by Antonio Banderas) in a stand-alone adventure. But even though it’s not beating you over the head with pop-culture references, it does feel like is something that was originally meant to be a direct to video title.

The Plot:

Fighter and lover Puss in Boots (Banderas) is a wanted cat that’s great with the ladies. He’s drawn to rob Jack and Jill (Thorton, Sedaris) because they have magical beans, but while on the job he runs into Kitty Softpaws (Hayek), and chases after her once they enter into a dance fight/seduction. It turns out she’s been working with Humpty Dumpty (Galifianakis), and Puss and Humpty grew up together and have a complicated history. The three team up to steal the beans to eventually get the goose that lays golden eggs.

The Good:

Kitty!: Cats are cute, and the film takes full advantage of having felines as its leads. The highlight of cuteness might be the cat bar dance fight, but if you’re a cat person, this plays to those strengths.
Occasional Wit: Fortunately this film doesn’t play on the pop culture references of previous Shrek films, and so it not only works as a stand-alone movie, it doesn’t feel as of the moment. Though – as a whole – it’s a little leaden as a narrative, there are moments when the filmmakers use the wide screen and 3-D for great comic effect. There’s also a great aside with Jack wanting to be a father and trying to prove that to his wife. It’s a nice silly running joke.
Kids Film: You’ve got charming leads, cartoon animals, and a brief running time. This may not be Pixar-level work, but it’s also neither painful or obnoxious, which many popular kids films are. It’s also got a reasonably respectable moral about redemption and all that, so on those standards the film is successful.

The Bad

Back Story: The film pauses and mocks that Puss must explain at great length how he and Humpty Dumpty grew up together. It’s a long section of the movie that shows how the two became friends and then how things went bad. Sequences like this slow a movie to a crawl and are predictable to boot – we know how it’s going to end up. It’s just boring storytelling.
Plotting: Humpty Dumpty’s plan is convoluted, and the end involves a change of heart, but it’s mostly nonsense that moves the narrative forward. When films like this have no real stakes or interesting reasons or emotional pull to their reveals it just makes everything feel like plate spinning, which is really what gives this that direct to video feel. Ultimately the main goal with a fourth sequel to a Shrek movie is going to be “making money,” but this feels a little too driven by that.

Overall:

This is passable children’s entertainment in an era marked by spectacular kids films. In no way is it terrible, but it’s also a film where Billy Bob Thorton manages to be funnier than Zach Galifianakis because the latter serves mostly as a plot point.

Rating: 6.5/10

Salma Hayek and Demi Moore Team Up for a Comedy?

What would you do if two of the most beautiful brunettes in the acting game got together for a slapstick comedy? Word is spreading like wildfire that Grown Ups star Salma Hayek and Demi Moore are planning a big screen team up. According to the New York Post, they both attended a dinner at at Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse after the premiere of Hayek’s latest film where they were overheard discussing a new project.

It’s hard to imagine Hayek and Moore running off at the mouth like two Chatty Cathys but apparently they were having a good time talking about a film collaboration. Could it be a comedy, drama, hell what about a horror movie? Both actresses have been in the business for a long time and have had their fair share of co-stars and have worked with a wide range of material. Have they ever co-starred in a film together?

Let me rephrase that, have they ever actually shared scenes with one another? If not, we might be in for something new. The last project Moore starred in was the independent comedy, The Joneses which co-starred David Duchovny and Amber Heard.

Grown Ups: Movie Review

Adam Sandler took the major players from the 1992 cast of “Saturday Night Live,” put them in a movie, and named it Grown Ups. The actor co-wrote the screenplay and stars in the film, which includes a who’s who of comedy veterans. On the surface, it looks like an excuse for a group of 40-somethings to act like 12 year olds but surprisingly, beyond the crude jokes and gags, there’s a legitimate story about friendship and family…

The Plot:

Grown Ups centers on a group of friends who reunite after 30 years following the death of their junior high basketball coach. While spending the holiday weekend together they reminisce about old times, reconnect with each other, and form new bonds with their families.

The Good

The Cast: Watching so many SNL alumni in the same place at the same time brought back memories of when the show was actually good. The actors had great chemistry and it looked as if they genuinely enjoyed each other’s company.
The Story – The idea of grown men reliving their childhood, while trying to get their children to experience one void of video games and cell phones is an interesting concept. Sandler and Wolf took that premise, laced it with jokes, and made it entertaining while keeping it solid.
The Direction: Dennis Dugan did a great job with the pace, the look, and the tone of the film. He made sure the main actors got their fair share of material and he kept everything balanced.
The Comedy - It’s been a long time since any of the actors in this movie put out anything seriously funny but Grown Ups puts an end to that dry spell. This film delivers the laughs.

The Bad

Villains: They weren’t flushed out at all. They were a group of misfits carrying around a 30 year old grudge for no logical reason. They were all one dimensional and didn’t have any real character development, which is unfortunate because Colin Quinn and Tim Meadows are also former SNL stars who are just as talented as the primary members of the cast.

Overall:

Grown Ups is a fun and enjoyable summer movie. The camaraderie between the actors is what makes the film worth it.

Rating: 8/10

DreamWorks may have put the final nail in Shrek’s coffin with last May’s Shrek Forever After, but the rest of the series characters are alive and kicking. Over a year ago it was announced that a Puss in Boots spin-off was in the works and we’ve got the first photo of the debonair cat alongside his new companion Kitty (voiced by Salma Hayek). Take a look…

The Shrek spin-off tells the hilarious and courageous (daring, bold, brave) tale of Puss’s (Antonio Banderas) early adventures as he teams with mastermind Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and the street-savvy Kitty to steal the famed goose that lays the Golden Eggs.

It’s kind of weird seeing Banderas and Hayek together again — in cat form. This could be an extremely watered down, animated version of Desperado without the guns, sex, or live-action. I like the fact that Kitty will be an equal to Boots and not some damsel in distress type of character, plus she has really good taste in belts!

Puss in Boots will debut in theaters November 2011 and of course it will be in 3-D.

VOTD: Salma Hayek Runs From Snake And Steps on Co-Star!

We all have things that we’re afraid of and apparently Salma Hayek has a HUGE issue with snakes. This may come as a shock considering she got up close and personal with one in Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk Till Dawn. The actress and a couple of her Grown Ups co-stars recently had to deal with an unexpected visitor during a routine TV interview. A snake [off camera] approached the ladies and Hayek immediately ran for the hills or in this case Maya Rudolph’s head…

I love how Hayek is genuinely afraid, Maria Bello is kind of laughing, and Rudolph is sitting there cool as a cucumber. You can tell that the Hayek is in a serious state of panic. Climbing up on chairs is understandable but climbing up on Rudolph’s arms and legs? It must have been uncomfortable for her to have two grown women stabbing her with their heels.

Another thing I noticed was that lame ass response the crew gave. They edited the video so we couldn’t see the actual wait time but what took them so long to get there? When they do interviews like this people are standing all over the place. They must having been more concerned with their own safety and said screw everyone else!

What do you think about Hayek’s reaction to the snake? Was it too much?

New Grown Ups International Trailer

A new UK trailer has been released for the Dennis Dugan directed comedy Grown Ups. It features a who’s who of former SNL stars including Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Maya Rudolph, and that one guy they just can’t shake, Kevin James. This trailer reveals slightly different footage from what we saw in the domestic version but manages to keep the same tone. Take a look…

The plot of the movie centers around five school friends, Sandler, Rock, Spade, Schneider, and James who reunite after 30 years to celebrate fourth of July weekend together. They try to reconnect with one another while discovering the changes they’ve all made over time. The film also stars Salma Hayek and Maria Bello as two of the long suffering wives who are married into this group of man-children.

The screenplay for Grown Ups was written by Sandler and Fred Wolf, which explains why we had such a hard time laughing at the jokes in the trailer. It’s been a while since Sandler has put out a good comedy; it seems like all of his decent material got used up during the mid and late-nineties with Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison,The Waterboy and Big Daddy. What the hell happened?

The international trailer for the upcoming ensemble comedy Grown Ups has been released, and it’s slightly better than the domestic version. The film’s main characters are mostly played by “Saturday Night Live” alumni, with the exception of Kevin James. The latest trailer gives us some new footage, and highlights some of the wives in the film that includes Salma Hayek.

The plot of the movie centers around five school friends, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, and James who reunite after 30 years to celebrate fourth of July weekend together. They try to reconnect with one another while discovering the changes they’ve all made over time. Grown Ups is directed by Dennis Dugan, who had a hand in the not funny I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, which can explain the weird placement of Kevin James within this crew.

In the latest trailer, they expand on what they showed in the first version, which includes more footage of the wives as played by Hayek, Maya Rudolph, and Maria Bello. Even though there’s a lot of talent in this cast, I’m not convinced that this will be a laugh out loud comedy. Sandler’s films haven’t been that hilarious as of late and this one looks like more of the same.

Salma Hayek and Maggie Grace Join Faster

Oscar nominee Salma Hayek and Taken star Maggie Grace are ready to play with the big boys in their next feature film. Both actresses are attached to star alongside Dwayne Johnson and Billy Bob Thornton in the action flick, Faster. According to Variety, one of these ladies has already signed on the dotted line, while another is in final negotiations.

The story for Faster centers on an ex-con hell bent on avenging his brothers death. Johnson will play a character named Driver, while Thornton will star as a veteran cop who trails him as he races to settle with those responsible for his brother’s murder. Also in the mix is Killer, an egocentric hitman who’s after Driver. Maggie Grace has officially joined the cast of the film, while Hayek is still in talks.

More than likely one of the actresses in question will be some sort of love interest for Johnson, and maybe the other will be a monkey wrench that gets thrown into his plans. The film will be directed by George Tillman Jr. and will begin production next month in Los Angeles. I can’t wait to see Johnson get back into some more action oriented films. His next feature to hit theaters is entitled the Tooth Fairy, and it’s more of a family friendly comedy.

A teaser trailer has finally been released for the ensemble comedy Grown Ups, which mostly features Saturday Night Live alumni except for one. And we’re not referring to the Will Ferrell era of SNL, we’re talking the bad boy years that featured Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Rock, and Rob Schneider. All of them will be on the big screen together along with Paul Blart Mall Cop, Kevin James.

A few of the female talents in this film include Salma Hayek and Maria Bello. Grown Ups is directed by Dennis Dugan, who had a hand in the not funny I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, which can explain the weird placement of Kevin James within this crew.

After watching this it’s hard not to wish that Chris Farley was still around to get in on some of the action. He could have easily taken James’ place, because he sticks out like a sore thumb. Grown Ups doesn’t look laugh out loud funny but it’s an opportunity for us to see if that old school SNL magic is still there.

John C. Reilly, Salma Hayek, Chris Massoglia for Vampire’s Assistant

I know, I know… Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant… another vampire flick. Only instead of Robert Pattinson looking longingly into your eyes, you get John C. Reilly whispering subtle jokes in your ear and possibly taking a dabble of blood is bored. He may seem like an odd lead for a vampire movie, but as he says in the interview below he’s been trying for ages to become the “next teen sensation” so this might finally be the film to push him over the edge! Chances are the wide-eyed, good-guy vampire Chris Massoglia might be taking that spot instead of him, but I’m still rooting for Reilly. That is if anyone can keep their eyes off Salma Hayek who even with a beard is probably once of the hottest women on earth.

John, you’ve done so many different types of roles that there’s not really a typical John C. Reilly role. But, a sexy vampire that gets to romance Salma Hayek is very different for you, isn’t it?

John: It’s a personal high.

What was your reaction when they offered you this role? Were you surprised?

John: Well, I was thrilled. I had been doing a lot of comedies in a row, and I was getting known only for that, especially among younger audiences. I thought, “Wow, I’ve done almost 50 movies, and these kids only know me from these two movies, and they think that’s all that I do.” So, I thought maybe it was time to do something different. I had always wanted to do a fantasy movie. This kind of movie is the kind of movie I like to see. I’m a big fan of the Harry Potter movies and The Lord of the Rings films. I like a good fantasy adventure story, so I was thrilled when it came along. And then, to have such a detailed, textured character [was great]. This guy has been alive so long and seen so much. And, I got to be a mentor character, which has been an important relationship in my life, at different points. So, I’m thrilled to just keep surprising them. Of course, in two years, it will be, “John, why are you always playing vampires and kissing Salma Hayek?”

John, how cool was it to play the head vampire?

John: This whole vampire tidal wave that’s happened lately wasn’t quite cresting, at the time we made the movie. The first Twilight movie hadn’t come out, or anything. My favorite vampire movie was Shadow of a Vampire. I thought that was really great. And, we were lucky enough to have Willem Dafoe in the movie. I became aware of the books through the script, and then eventually read all of them. I was always the one on the set going, “You know, but the books say . . .” I came to really enjoy them.

Chris, it seems like playing a young, handsome vampire is the fastest way to becoming a star. Do you feel pressure to become the next teen sensation?

Chris: I don’t really think I feel pressured to become a teen sensation ‘cause that’s not really my goal in life. It’s not really about being star, being popular or having lots of girls. It’s really about continuing to be able to act and have fun, and do what I like to do. For me, it’s just about learning and being there, understanding and developing my acting abilities, and being able to look for the next project, so I can act in it. It’s not really about being a teen star, so I don’t really feel pressured in that way.

John: I feel pressured to become the next teen sensation. I don’t have a lot of years left, so I’m really counting on this one.

Salma, what do you think about the vampire explosion and what do you like about vampires?

Salma: I don’t have a fascination for vampires. It’s quite ironic. I’ve actually been a vampire in a movie, and I’ve been in love with a vampire in another movie, and yet I have no fascination whatsoever with vampires. But, I did love this script. It wasn’t the fact that it was vampires. I actually found the concept of the circus freaks a lot more interesting than the vampires, maybe because there’s been less movies done about that. But, it doesn’t matter what I like ‘cause they were interesting characters. I also liked that it was a film that is for young people, but it doesn’t treat young people as a cliche. It’s respectful of their uniqueness. It doesn’t tell them exactly what they’re supposed to think. It gives them space to take different things in different ways. I thought it was quite smart and refreshing, so that’s what attracted me to it. It just happened to be a vampire project. It also just happened to have facial hair, and it’s the third time I’ve done some kind of freak facial hair in a movie.

One of the things that makes this vampire movie unique is the flitting that the vampires do. How did that actually work?

John: That involved Chris getting on my back, and me trying to run with Chris on my back. My knees used to be able to do that much better than they’re able to do. But, we only had to run a few feet and then the effects would kick in. One of my favorite parts of the books is actually the fact that they can travel so quickly.

Chris: I liked being able to be on John’s back. It was fun.

What challenges did you encounter with shooting this movie, or was it just fun for you?

Chris: This was my first movie and my first chance to really act in a movie. There are a lot of things about acting that are really fun, but at the same time, it is work and it is a job. We were on set for 12 hours a day, for three and a half months. I was away from my friends and family, and I wasn’t playing sports. So, while the whole experience was really interesting and fun and I learned a lot, there were days that I had to work, like anybody has to do.

John: It was a real special time to get to work in New Orleans. Some parts of the city were totally coming back, and other parts were shockingly still neglected and seemingly forgotten, so that was hard to see. Once you get outside of the French Quarter, it was hard to see how hard people were still struggling in New Orleans. That theater that we shot in hadn’t really been touched since the storm, so it was filthy and you felt like it was dangerous just to be in there. But, ironically, that was exactly why we picked it. It was so atmospheric and had so much decay going on. It was a challenge to work in that place, but overall, New Orleans was a pretty delightful place to be.

Salma: For me, it was a dream job because I had a very small part and everybody in the movie was amazing and fun to be with. For me, it was just a lot of fun. I would go in and talk with nice people and play a crazy character. It was not a lot of work. I spent a lot of time with my child. But, at the same time, everybody took this very seriously. The movie has a lot of comedy and they are fantastic characters, but part of the fun was working with such professional people. And, I was very impressed with Chris. He’s young and it’s his first movie. It would be very easy to get distracted. But, all the young kids were shocking. They were like machines. They were professional, focused, took it very seriously, really paid attention to the directions and really tried to understand and learn. They were always watching John.

Chris: We had good examples.

Salma: Everybody took it very seriously, and that was part of the fun.

Chris, you’re just getting started here with your first film. Were you able to learn some tips from John, Salma or any of the other actors?

Chris: Yeah, definitely. One of the best things, for me, about doing this movie was just working with all these guys. Being able to do your first movie with a bunch of Oscar nominated actors and actresses, and director, is a really big privilege. I remember the first day I was working with John, I was a little intimidated. And, (director) Paul [Weitz] came up and just started talking to me, and he got my mind off the subject. And then, John came up and we had a really cool conversation, and it was fine. It was a lot of fun.

I asked John a lot of questions, throughout filming, like “What was it like for you? How would you deal with certain situations?” The biggest thing for me was just being able to observe how he worked with the crew members and different cast members that would come and go. It was fun, not only ‘cause I got to see how he acted professionally in what he does, but I also got to see how he related personally with all the other cast and crew. It was really awesome for me.

What was it like to work with Michael Cerveris?

John: He’s about 100 pounds lighter than he appears in the film, first of all. I can’t tell you how many people I know, who have seen the film, have said, “Where did they get that fat guy from? He was amazing!” And, I say, “That’s not a fat guy. That’s this actor.” When Michael and I would act in scenes together, I felt like we were trying to out-arch each other [with our eyebrows]. We were both trying to out-sinister each other, but I think he had me beat. He’s got that sinister quality in the bones. He’s just a fantastic stage actor. That’s what I know him from. So, I was really happy that he played the part. He really made the movie very rich. He’s the puppet master, through the whole thing.

Chris: He was really fun to work with. He was really nice. It was weird because he’d walk around set normal. He’s really skinny and pretty short, and then he had this huge, fat head on, so it was a little man with a really fat head, which was weird. But, yeah, he was really fun. It was really cool. He’s a huge fan of New Orleans and he did a lot to help out when he was there. He played shows there. I think he has an apartment there. It was cool to see how much he cared about New Orleans.

This movie ends in such a way that is very open for a sequel. Have they already talked to you about doing more films? Are you signed on for more?

John: We’ve been filming now for about three months. We’re almost done. It’s a big gamble on Universal’s part. No. If the movie does well, I’d assume there will be another one.

Chris: Yeah, I’m signed on for some more projects, and I’d love to do more. What I’ve heard is that, if the fans really come out and support the movie, then everybody is really interested in making another one.

Salma: We did sign a contract. We don’t know if it’s going to happen or not, but they made sure that we cannot just escape that easily, if it does well. I think it’s going to do really well, and I think it’s going to surprise many people.

The Vampire’s Assistant: Trailer, Poster, Photos

It’s time for a film that no one has heard of! Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, (yes I know, another vampire film) which is kind of like a horror film for kids, starring John C. Reilly, Ken Watanabe, Josh Hutcherson, Chris Massoglia,Willem Dafoe and Salma Hayek, and directed by Paul Weitz.

I have no idea what to say about this movie. I want to hate it and yet I find the trailer amusing (damn you John C. Reilly for being so good in everything).

Synopsis: Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, based on the popular series of books by Darren Shan, is a fantasy-adventure about a teenager who unknowingly breaks a 200-year-old truce between two warring factions of vampires. Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares.
