The best thing that can be said about the new trailer for Rock of Ages, a modern musical about ‘80s Sunset Strip rock/hair metal, is that, um, well gosh, it sure is shiny and bright. That’s something, right? I mean, someone must want to see Tom Cruise play an amalgamation of Jon Bon Jovi, David Coverdale, and Steve Perry, backed by a soundtrack that sounds like the cast of Glee discovering a mixtape cassette in the back of a 1985 Toyota Hatchback parked a block down from the Whiskey a Go Go. The hit musical Rock of Ages took many of the kitschy but lovably sincere rock anthems of the 1980′s and Broadway-ized them. So who better to head up the film adaptation than Adam Shankman, who gave Hairspray a similar stage-to-screen treatment? The film – which stars Julianne Hough, Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, Russell Brand and Malin Ackerman – hits theaters June 1, 2012, but now there’s a trailer. We can’t believe it but Tom Cruise will shake his groove thang and belt out some serious tunes in the big screen adaptation of Rock of Ages. We initially reported on this story back in December when it was rumored that the actor was “circling” the project. Now according to THR, that rumor has become a reality. Cruise is in talks to star in the musical.

In November we learned that Grammy award winning singer Mary J. Blige had been cast in Adam Shankman’s feature adaptation of the stage musical, Rock of Ages. According to a report from The Wrap, she might be joined by Alec Baldwin, who’s been offered a major role in the film. Shankman will not only direct but he’ll also choreograph the entire film similar to what he did for his revamp of Hairspray.

The director of the Hairspray remake will take on the musical Rock of Ages. According to Variety, Adam Shankman is ready for some edgier material and has signed on to helm the screen version of the Broadway play for New Line Cinema. This will be a return to some 80′s rock roots for the director who’s had his fair share of experience during the hair metal era.
