The 30th Annual Sundance Film Festival kicked off with a discussion between festival founder Robert Redford, current festival director John Cooper, and 2012 festival director Keri Putnam. Today the brains behind Sundance Film Festival, Robert Redford and John Cooper sat down to a press conference at the Egyptian theater to talk about going back to the festivals roots and why it’s still so important to keep making indie films and getting them seen. As you may remember from some of my earlier comments, one of my bring problems with the festival is that the majority of the feature films do not seem that “indie.” Most of them have a minimum of 3 huge A-list faces on the poster and most likely so wealthy producers to back it, which hardly seems fair to the little guy. I just got back from a press conference with Robert Redford and John Cooper which we’ll have video clips, photos, and a full audio recording from soon, but the most amazing part happened directly after the press conference. As we were getting up to leave, I heard someone saying that they wanted “Roger” to get a picture with “Robert”. I looked around and a crowd had gathered around where I was standing and I realized that Roger Ebert was sitting directly behind me and that Robert Redford had just walked through the audience to say hello to him. I quite literally could not have exited if I wanted to because I was so crammed next to the two film legions.

Robert Redford isn’t playing any games with his upcoming period drama, The Conspirator. Earlier today, we brought you two photos from the set of the movie that began filming Monday in Georgia, as well as the casting announcement of Toby Kebbell as John Wilkes Booth. Now, according to Variety, three more actors have joined the cast, Oscar winner Kevin Kline, Tom Wilkinson, and former Gilmore Girl Alexis Bledel.

We’ve known for a while that Steven Spielberg has been trying get his film about President Lincoln off the ground, but it has constantly been postponed due to budget and location problems. Last month we heard rumors that Robert Redford was thinking about making his own Lincoln project, titled The Conspirator with James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn.
It seems like a month is all Redford needed because he is looking to start shooting as early as next month with independent financing. Meanwhile Speilberg’s film still seems like a bit of a dream job with a much bigger budget.
