Raging Bull is many things—uncompromising, vicious, beautiful, daring, funny, harrowing, and brilliant.  Modern movie sequels tend to be, with very few exceptions, absolutely none of those things.  So, of course, it makes sense that Hollywood would churn out a Raging Bull sequel 32 years after the original battered its way into celluloid history, and will be doing so without the two most pivotal elements that made the original so excellent—director Martin Scorsese and star Robert De Niro.  So this should go well.

Being Flynn is Paul Weitz’s version of A Better Life, so to speak. In the past few years, the Weitz brothers have individually (and literally) gone from big blockbusters (Little Fockers, The Twilight Saga: New Moon) to more personal projects about the complications between father and son relationships. Adapted from Nick Flynn’s acclaimed 2004 memoir Another Bullshit Night In Suck City, Being Flynn tells the story between Nick, played by Paul Dano, and his estranged father of 18-years, Jonathan Flynn, played by Robert De Niro.

Not a whole to crow about on DVD this week. In fact, there’s only three new releases (not counting the de facto Straight-to-DVD travesties) of any real note landing on shelves this week. And two of those are movies that you don’t remember existed (or at least that Robert De Niro starred in one of them). What a shame!

Luckily, the third DVD is probably the most exciting DVD release (for me) that I can remember. A TV series so beloved that I had to make it my Twitter Avatar. What is it?

The Cannes Film Festival has announced the competition lineup for 2011 and it’s a stunner, featuring a hotshot collection of directors that range from Terrence Malick, the Dardenne brothers, Pedro Almodovar, Lars Von Trier, Nanni Moretti, and Woody Allen according to The Hollywood Reporter.   Robert De Niro will be heading up the festival’s VIP jury.
