" width="576" height="345" />

It’s worth taking this with a grain of salt, but Twitchfilm is reporting that Harrison Ford may take a role in Ridley Scott‘s Blade Runner spin-off. Though they don’t have direct quotes – and the story may be updated later in the day – it suggests a direct sequel, which has not been what anyone’s said in the past. In fact, Scott said it would have none of the original cast members. If Ford does jump on board, surely Sean Young will see if there’s a role for her too.

This then brings up the question that Scott made unsubtle in his director’s cuts of the first film: is Harrison Ford’s character Deckard a replicant? Whereas in the theatrical cut there were some ambiguous clues, the latter versions leave less to interpretation and Scott has said point blank that he is a “skin job.” If Ford is involved, will they go the Tron Legacy route and de-age him? Or will he play Deckard at all?

But adding Ford has to be attractive – it would give the new film another level of anticipation, though it’s worth remembering that Blade Runner bombed when released in 1982. Much like Tron. And much like John Carpenter’s The Thing, which also inspired a spin-off. And none of their reboots/sequels/etc. did particularly well at the box office. But maybe this will be different…

Do you think Deckard is a replicant?

Quick of cut and huge of scale, the trailer for Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus ties the film into his 1979 film Alien in two distinct ways. One is the lettering that comes as we get quick flashes of cast members Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace and Idris Elba. The other is a certain prop that looks mighty familiar to fans of the original. Check out the trailer…

What this film is seems still up for grabs. The characters are humans (“They went looking for our beginning”), I guess, and there seems to be a lot of large scale sets, and great science fiction atmosphere. But what’s going on is completely up for grabs, and it’s hard to know if the film follows the original’s Ten Little Indians structure. The cast listing says “and Charlize Theron” which could mean she’s the first or last to go.

This doesn’t seem to offer much Guy Pearce, but to be fair no one gets any on screen dialogue, and this seems to be more about setting a tone, which is the new trailer goal. That tone is “it’s a little like the first film, but much more fast paced and jump scary.” Supposedly this is the first of two of these films. The film comes out June 8, 2012.

Is that what you wanted out of an Prometheus trailer?

First of all, let me say I like the identifications on these because it makes them look like old school lobby cards. And were these images weathered down, some might look like they came from the first movie.

This is our first good look at the cast, and it will be interesting to see how much the film mimics the structure of the first film. Likely the majority of the cast won’t make it until the end, so it’s quite possible Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace or Charlize Theron are there to provide the shock of an early exit. But my guess is they’ll try to keep such surprises close to the vest. A bootleg trailer leaked over the weekend, which means that a full trailer should be attached to one of the bigger Holiday movies. Since it’s Fox, the best guess is that it will be on Alvin and the Chipmunks 3: Chipwrecked.

Do you think Michael Fassbender just looks weird in the still, or does it feel like he’s a android?

Oh, Ridley Scott. Ridley has had a number of film in development for a while, but it seems he’s been getting the most traction on follow ups to his older films. Prometheus is due out summer 2012, but recently he’s been talking up his continuation of the Blade Runner universe, and as he tells the Wall Street Journal it’s going to be a sequel but with none of the cast from the original returning.

The production company Alcon announced this proposed sequel in August, as we reported, but Scott makes it sound like they are deep in pre-production – even though there is no writer attached. Scott has been a real worker over the last decade, having gone through periods of inactivity to directing nearly a picture a year since Gladiator reinvigorated his career.

But though Scott is highly respected in the industry, he doesn’t have the world’s best track record as a performer, so perhaps it’s no surprise he’s returning to his earlier films to guarantee a job. That seems to be the way of the business right now, so why not do it yourself if you’re still working? The strangest thing about this was that Blade Runner was a huge flop in 1982. Hopefully this is better than the similar “late stage follow up to a cult hit from 1982″ Tron Legacy.

Ridley Scott and Alcon Entertainment are now pursuing a sequel (perhaps in name only) to Blade Runner, the 1982 film which was received poorly upon initial release. This looks to follow Prometheus, Scott’s most recent project, and a spin-off of his 1979 film Alien. Little is known about the project in terms of the narrative, but Ridley Scott is the only person who could helm this material without complete skepticism.

What’s funny about this is that in 1982, Ridley Scott‘s Blade Runner flopped at the box office. It couldn’t compete with the feel-good world of Steven Spielberg‘s E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, and wasn’t what Harrison Ford fans were looking for after two Star Wars entries and Raiders of the Lost Ark. But over the years the film’s reputation grew, and in 1992 it recieved a theatrical re-release of a “director’s cut” that Scott later said was never his director’s cut. But by then the cult had grown and a sequel book was written. In 2007′ the film got “final cut” release, and is now enshrined as a classic.

Since Replicants have a four year life span, and Ridley Scott now feels that Harrison Ford’s character is a Replicant (a question fans and the film’s cast and crew debate to this day), it’s unlikely there will be any returning cast members, which suggests (like Prometheus) it will take place in the world, and have smaller connections to the original than, say, cast members. Here’s the press release:

ALCON ENTERTAINMENT PARTNERING WITH RIDLEY SCOTT TO DIRECT AND PRODUCE NEW ‘BLADE RUNNER’ FOLLOW UP. BUD YORKIN AND CYNTHIA SIKES YORKIN ALSO TO PRODUCE.

LOS ANGELES, CA, AUGUST 18, 2011—Three-time Oscar-nominated director Ridley Scott is set to helm a follow up to his own ground-breaking 1982 science fiction classic “Blade Runner” for Warner Bros-based financing and production company Alcon Entertainment (“The Blind Side,” “The Book of Eli”).

Alcon co-founders and co-Chief Executive Officers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove will produce with Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin, along with Ridley Scott. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers.

The filmmakers have not yet revealed whether the theatrical project will be a prequel or sequel to the renowned original.

Alcon and Yorkin recently announced that they are partnering to produce “Blade Runner” theatrical sequels and prequels, in addition to all television and interactive productions.

The original film, which has been singled out as the greatest science-fiction film of all time by a majority of genre publications, was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1993 and is frequently taught in university courses. In 2007, it was named the 2nd most visually influential film of all time by the Visual Effects Society.

State Kosove and Johnson: “It would be a gross understatement to say that we are elated Ridley Scott will shepherd this iconic story into a new, exciting direction. We are huge fans of Ridley’s and of the original ‘Blade Runner.’ This is once in a lifetime project for us.”

Scott is represented by David Wirtschafter at WME and David Nochinson at Ziffren Brittenham.

Released by Warner Bros. almost 30 years ago, “Blade Runner” was adapted by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples from Philip K. Dick’s groundbreaking novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” and directed by Scott following his landmark “Alien.” The film was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction). Following the filming of “Blade Runner,” the first of Philip K. Dick’s works to be adapted into a film, many other of Dick’s works were likewise adapted, including “Total Recall,” “A Scanner Darkly,” “Minority Report,” “Paycheck,” and the recent “The Adjustment Bureau,” among others.

Is a Legend spin-off next?

This afternoon in Comic Con’s Hall H, screenwriter and Lost co-creator Damon Lindeloff, joined by star Charlize Theron, presented a short behind the scenes look at Ridley Scott’s much rumored Prometheus. The panel also included a special visit live via satellite from Sir Ridley himself, as well as cast member Noomi Rapace, all the way from the movie’s set in Iceland. To find out more about what was screened and discussed, check out the rest of the article after the jump!

Unfortunately, since both 20th Century Fox and Comic Con are extremely strict about keeping the footage shown at the con exclusive for attendees, we can’t share the footage that was shown in the hall. I’ll do my best to describe it, however…

What was shown was essentially a behind the scenes look at the production thus far, featuring interview footage with Mr. Scott, and quick cuts of some of the completed shots, including massive set pieces which were expertly lit, rivaling the insanely impressive lighting setups of the first Alien film. There were plenty of other similarities to his 1979 masterpiece, including vast biomechanical sets with an influence from creature impressario H.R. Geiger. We also saw glass syringes with what look like little extraterrestrial larvae swimming in green goo. Other quick cuts revealed a spaceship approaching a giant, ringed, grey gas planet. There were also foreboding shots of crew members looking at each other menacingly, and several shots involving flamethrowers.

Additionally, we saw several shots of the film’s cast members, which included Guy Pearce in a glowing orange spacesuit, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’s Noomey Rapace looking soaking wet and scarier than ever, The Wire’s Idris Elba piloting some kind of planetary rover (also reminiscent of Alien), and Charlize Theron doing pushups in the nude!

Over the footage, Ridley Scott explained that the rumors surrounding this film indicating that it would be a prequel to Alien were only slightly true. ”It’s not exactly Alien, but the creatures in this film include some of the DNA from the original creature.” He said that he was more interested in creating a hostile environment that could literally eviscerate the crew at any moment. ”What I really want to do is scare the living shit out of you.”

Ms. Theron went on to explain how she came to be on the film. She said that they had offered her a role, but she was scheduled to film a Mad Max remake on the other side of the globe. But when that film’s schedule pushed, she was suddenly available, and jumped at the chance to work on Prometheus. She described her character as a suit, and a scientist. She runs a tight ship, and you can tell that she’s going to be a problem.” I, for one, am eager to see her show off her range in another dark role. But I’m also glad that they didn’t have to ugly her up to justify it (yeah, Monster and North Country, I’m talking about you).

Lindeloff was happy to surprise the audience with a live transmission of Ridley Scott, joined by Noomi Rapace, as they stood atop a waterfall set in Iceland, where they were concluding the film’s shoot (the beginning of the story, incidentally). When asked why it had taken him so long to return to the science fiction genre, Scott replied, “I was just too busy making other movies and exploring other genres…until I realized that there was something about the first Alien, that no one answered the questions about, and I thought, ‘that could be the centerpiece of what we’ve just created.’ But still, we’ve gone in another direction, but in the last few minutes of the movie, you’ll understand what I’m talking about.

Scott also discussed that the film is being shot in 3-D. He said, “3-D has been a wonderful exercise…I was brought up as a camera op, so it’s all about lensing, and creating a look” He added, “I’ll never wrok without 3-D again, even for small dialogue scenes. 3-D Opens up the universe.” He also talked about the advantages of using practical set design and special effects. He said, “If you can do it live, do it live. It’ll always be better than anything else. And even though we’ve got all these digital capabilities, I continue do the same…it’s also cheaper.”

When asked by Lindeloff (who penned the script) about the challenges of filming this movie, Miss Rapace said, “It feels really weird to come back to Earth again. We started in early March, in space, and it’s been long, hard days, both physically and emotionally. But it’s been amazing– The best journey ever. Thanks to this man. When I read the script, I was thrilled. When we started to work, I went into it, I completely forgot about everything else, and it felt like we were discovering something that I haven’t been in before. My respect for him has been growing every day, and I come home smiling.”

The way the panel described the film was very encouraging, and it sounds and looks like a return to form for Ridley Scott. I wish I could describe the footage better, but they were rapid fire, and densely packed with intricate set design and alien awesomeness too cool to let me be a responsible journalist. However, speaking as a movie fan, I can definitely say that this movie looks like it is going to be SUPER COOL!!! Let’s hope a real trailer isn’t far behind.

Though Ridley Scott is hard at work on his sort of prequel, sort of spin-off Alien film Prometheus, that’s not stopping him from lining up his next project. Currently he and his producing partner Giannina Facio have hired screenwriter Jeffrey Caine to turn Gertrude Bell’s life into a film. Brittish-born Bell is most famous for her work in the Middle East. There she was once a spy, only to fall out of favor for advocating Arab self-rule over colonial involvement.

Though never explicit, in the director’s cut of Kingdom of Heaven it becomes all the more apparent that Ridley Scott was using the period epic film to offer commentary on the Iraq war, and the troubles in the Middle East. Perhaps it’s the nature of the period, where religion was used as an excuse to fight for more property. Through for much of his career Scott’s films could be called apolitical, but something happened post-Gladiator, and his films have had more of an eye toward commentary on the world at large, and especially the Middle East.

He wrestled with modern combat in Black Hawk Down, and covert work in Body of Lies, but it seems that this sort of smuggling is better reserved for something with a historical sweep. Also, post-Gladiator, it’s good to see Scott so re-engaged with directing. He would often go years without projects or films, but recently he’s put out a film a year, from the great (the director’s cut of Kingdom of Heaven, Black Hawk Down) to modest (American Gangster) to miserable (Robin Hood).

Currently the film is set up under Scott’s production deal with 20th Century Fox. The prospects for this film will hinge on how well the public receives his dip back into the world of Alien.

Would you call Ridley Scott one of the world’s greatest directors, or terribly overrated?

The cast of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus continues to grow with the addition of three new actors. According to Mail Online, Idris Elba, Sean Harris and Kate Dickie have all signed on to co-star in the film. They also learned a little more about the tone of the movie from the director himself who spoke to the site about the upcoming production.

Prior to this announcement, we learned that Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, and Charlize Theron had all been cast in major roles in Prometheus. We also knew the director would have to grab some great talent to fill the supporting parts and he didn’t disappoint. Idris Elba continues to find himself in high profile projects. He has Thor, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and now Prometheus on his upcoming roster. Is there anything he can’t do?

The site claims that the film starts production in three weeks. Scott revealed, “It’s the story of creation, the gods and the man who stood against them. It’s not a small film,’ Ridley joked. “I’m using the giant James Bond 007 stage at Pinewood and six other sound stages to film it,” he added.

The director also decided to clear the air regarding the prequel rumors. We all thought that Prometheus was connected to his Alien series as a predecessor to the original film, but Scott says that’s not true.

“While ‘Alien’ was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of ‘Alien’s’ DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative.”

Hmmm, we’re still confused. The director has the film’s script on lock down and is doing everything in his power to keep it from getting leaked. Therefore, we’ll just have to stay in the dark until the studio decides to release an official synopsis for the film.

What do you think of Elba joining the cast of Prometheus? Are you interested in seeing the film?

Hearing that the Scott Brothers have produced a film of entirely of user-submitted content means one of two things — this is going to be a complete, chaotic mess, with random thoughts, and scattered ideas that don’t lead up to anything OR this is a film that will change cinema as we know it and absolutely shock and amaze audiences. For me there was really no in between. So what was it….

The Players:

Director: Kevin Macdonald

Produced By: Ridley Scott and Tony Scott

The Plot:

Life in a Day is a documentary that includes footage from filmmakers all over the world that shows what happens over the course of one day — July 24, 2010. With the help of YouTube users, director Kevin McDonald was able to gather enough material to make a feature film that will hopefully serve as a time capsule for future generations

Review:

To my surprise it was the latter. I went in expecting a mess, and was shocked when I found that this was one of the most thoughtful, well-made, honest, and highly effectual films of the festival. There was something about it that just touched your inner core; whether it be the mother of a family, having cancer and taking care of her child with a smile on her face, a young boy shining shoes, a music festival going horribly wrong, or a teenage girl talking to the camera having “just one of those days” — there was something that just resonated with our basic human instincts.

It does a beautiful job at showing people’s distinct individual personalities and yet also shows how similar we all are. It leaves you feeling relieved in an odd way because no matter what is going on in your life, there is so much more out there, and yet your single life is also important. It’s a hard concept to display cinematically or even grasp in general, but somehow this film manages to have it all simply laid out in front of you for you to experience. And that is what this film is, an experience of life, big, small, old new.

And don’t be too discouraged about the seriousness or headiness of what I’m talking about. For such a seemingly convoluted film, it was extremely easy to follow and filled with quite a bit of humor. This is not just for the “educated” film-goer (if that even exists) this film is for everyone, of all ages (not too young it does get violent), all genders, creeds…. It’s for you.

There’s no doubt that someone or something in this film will resonate with you, because there is so much basic life issues that we all deal with, that we all can grasp.

Overall:

This is a truly beautiful film like anything you’ve ever seen before. I highly recommend sitting down and letting it wash over you as soon as you get the chance. And who knows, cinema may have just changed in the way that we know it…

Rating: 9.2/10

The Hollywood studios continue to play a game of release date shuffle. Last week we learned that Frankenweenie and John Carter of Mars‘ respective dates had been moved, and now according to Heat Vision John Carter’s has been changed again. This time, the decision has to do with Ridley Scott’s upcoming sci-fi epic Prometheus.

The trade is reporting that Prometheus will move from its original March 9, 2012 date to something a little more high profile. The film will switch with John Carter of Mars and be pushed back to June 8, 2012. Therefore, Mars will be released on March 9. This means Fox wants Scott’s sci-fi epic to get take full advantage of the summer blockbuster season.

Prometheus—which has morphed from being an Aliens prequel to original sci-fi tentpole—stars Noomi Rapace, star of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Damon Lindelof is working together with Scott on the new script, which was originally written by Jon Spaihts and based on an idea by Scott.

Now that John Carter has moved up, we wonder if it will be able to have a successful opening without the summer buzz and hype? It is Pixar’s first attempt at live action, and it’s a CGI 3D hybrid. There’s a lot going on there.

What do you think of the new release date for Prometheus? Is it a better fit?
