The Golden Globe nomination for RED gave it a serious boost in commercial appeal. The Summit Entertainment production made over a $100 million at the worldwide box office, and the unexpected nod was just icing on the cake. Now according to Collider, we can expect more geriatric hijinks to ensue because the studio has rehired RED screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber to pen a sequel!

The site claims that Summit has commissioned the Hoebers to deliver another script for a RED sequel, but they haven’t given the project a green light. Everything is very much in the early stages. They also have to think about convincing the rest of the cast to sign on for another movie. The chemistry between the veteran actors was integral to the story.

If they do go through with a follow up, we think they should confirm as many people and green light the sequel immediately. The steam from the Golden Globes won’t last long. Plus, the actors have more than their fair share of projects to occupy their time. Isn’t Bruce Willis gearing up for Die Hard 5?

What do you think of RED 2? Does the film need a sequel?

RED MOVIE REVIEW: This weekend in theaters the old gang gets back together in RED to perform the ultimate heist — meaning a bunch of well known actors got paid to shoot a bunch of giant runs in nice clothing. Overall this is very much the film you think it’s going to be; it’s has plenty of funny jokes, moves right along, there’s a lot great actors saying cheesy lines that through anyone else’s mouth would make you cringe and a very thin but easy to watch story.

Check out the review below and decide for yourself if this is the film for you…

The Players:

Directed by: Robert Schwentke

Writing by: Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber (screenplay), Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner (graphic novel)

Actors: Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Mary Louise Parker, Richard Dreyfuss, Karl Urban, and Julian McMahon

Original Music by: Christophe Beck

Cinematography by: Florian Ballhaus

The Plot:

When a retired former black-ops agent Frank Moses starts to get bored and lonely, he steals a women and gets himself in one last bad situation in which be have to put together his old in order to survive.

The Good:

The Gimmick: You get a lot of well known actors, give them a reason to come together, and get to watch some of your favorite action, comedic and dramatic actors shooting up a bunch of people. It’s been done, it’s not that interesting, but it’s fun enough.

Bruce Willis/The Whole Cast: Lets face it, there’s not much of a script here, so all their personalities have to carry the story — luckily they have the cast to pull it off. Bruce Willis has to carry most of the film on his shoulders (which quite often is the case) and as always he’s charismatic does an admirable job of keeping the story interesting when there is not much going on. Once again the supporting cast helps quite a bit.

The Bad:

Not Enough Mirren: They promote the film like it’s all about Helen Mirren and then she doesn’t even show up until the second act and then only assists through the end.

Convenient: Everything in the film is convenient, there are never any real hurdles, just bumps in the road.

Quality: It’s not a great film, there’s nothing overtly interesting about the characters or their journey. This was very much made with a nudge and wink to the audience, and it’s fun but not nothing amazing.

Leads Dying: This film is all about having fun, don’t kill off our favorite actors!

Overall:

It’s a fun ride, but nothing ground-breaking. It’s just enough to keep your entertained and the cast is amazing, but that’s about it.

Rating: 6.5/10

LET ME IN:

Art by Olly Moss. Let Me In is the opening night film at Fantastic Fest on Thursday, September 23. Fantastic Fest is the largest genre festival in the U.S. Director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) said, “We are truly honored that Fantastic Fest has chosen to open their festival with the U.S. premier of Let Me In. It is incredibly exciting to be able to present the film to an audience who I know are just as passionate about John Ajvide Linqvist’s story as I am.”

ROGER CORMAN:

Art by Zach Hobbs. Fantastic Fest will honor director/producer Roger Corman & producer Julie Corman with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Roger Corman received an Honorary 2010 Oscar for his contributions to filmmaking, and is the legendary director and producer of numerous cult classics, among them It Conquered the World, Death Race 2000 and The Little Shop of Horrors. The double feature screening includes a Corman-produced film, Sharktopus, about a hybrid shark/octopus that goes in a killing rampage and Machete Maidens Unleashed! a documentary from the director of Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation, featuring the even wilder world of Philippine-made exploitation movies. The documentary features interviews with Roger Corman.

RED WHITE & BLUE

Art by Sawdust. IFC Midnight, the new genre label of IFC Films has partnered with Fantastic Fest for the first time to bring four of its festival films to audiences nationwide via the movies-on-demand platform. Red White & Blue, Heartless, Primal and High Lane will premiere at the festival and be available on-demand simultaneously. In Red White & Blue, Erica is a tough, troubled nymphomaniac with wound across her soul. For Erica, sleeping with multiple men forms the core of her life, until she meets the mysterious Iraq vet Nate. Despite his air of danger, Nate’s the only guy who doesn’t immediately want to sleep with her, and the two form a hesitant bond. But in a shocking twist, one of Erica’s earlier sexual encounters with wannabe rock star Franki will have unexpected – and devastating – consequences on both of their lives.

NEVERMORE

Art by Alan Hynes. Jeffrey Combs (Reanimator, The Frighteners) will be performing his one man show Nevermore… An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe. The play uses a compilation of historical accounts, actual monologues, articles, letters and Poe’s own words to construct the definitive portrait of America’s most famous macabre poet. The play ran for months in Los Angeles and received unanimously glowing reviews. Jeffrey Combs and director Stuart Gordon will also attend special repertory screenings of their cult horror classics Reanimator & From Beyond during the festival.

RUBBER

Art by Olly Moss. Fantastic Fest scours the globe for the very best (and strangest) in genre cinema. Rubber tops the list of both categories with its tale of Robert, a very disgruntled psychokinetic automobile tire who explodes the heads of birds, beasts and humans alike on a high-desert killing spree like no other.

X: THE MAN WITH THE X-RAY EYES

Art by Rob Jones. Fantastic Fest will also pay tribute to Roger Corman at the festival with a repertory screening of a film he directed called X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes. Fantastic Fest is put together by programming gurus behind the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Alamo Drafthouse CEO and Fantastic Fest co-founder Tim League credits Roger and Julie Corman as the single greatest inspiration in the development of the renowned theater.

Directly after the RED panel at Comic-Con the press got a chance to take part in an intimate gathering with the group where we got to pick their brains. Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, graphic novel author Warren Ellis and graphic novel artist Cully Hamner were all in attendance and eager to answer our questions about their upcoming action-comedy.

***Update: Videos are now up. Check them out below!***

Check out the videos and what the stars had to say…

At this stage in your career does it feel like the right time for action movies?

Bruce Willis: I always question whether it’s the right time for anything I do. I rely a lot of times on my own choices, the scripts I like and stories I like. This film was always ambitious right from the very start. Could have just been defined as an action movie or a comedy or a romantic comedy. The studio and the story was always about that and stayed there. It always felt ambitious. Depending on who you talk to, young guys will tell you it’s an action movie. some people tell you it’s a comedy or it’s a romantic comedy but it weaves all these things together. When it doesn’t move you off of liking the action or liking the comedy or liking the romance. I have a romance in this film! And a romantic comedy. It seems great and I really am pleased with this choice. I think Robert had a lot of things to juggle and a lot of – - I think it would be intimidating for almost anyone to work with this many veteran actors and big movie stars. And Robert managed it every day with a lot of grace…

Lorenzo DiBonaventura: The director has to hold the tone. We have six or seven tones in this movie. one person has to really hold onto that. When Bruce first decided to do the movie. we had conversations about R’s not known for his comedy, how is he going to handle that and how is he going to mix those genres. It was amazing we were able to hold all those tones and it made sense.

Helen Mirren: Robert was very good at maintaining the overall style of acting as well as the overall style of the movie. He was very loose and very easy and very patient.

How do you feel about comic books becoming mainstream in Hollywood?

HM: I’m wearing a t-shirt in [tribute] to Harvey Pekar who I thought was a great, great artist… I thought it was all about comic book heroes and boys kind of stuff. He revealed the fact that a graphic novel could be as deep, complex, personal and psychological as any other work of art: novel, movie, painting, anything. So I think that this world, I think it’s really exciting to see it burgeoning and expanding and changing as it goes into a real total art form. I think we’re at a very exciting point in the whole era, the whole development of comic books. I’m fascinated to see where it’s going to be in another 20 years.

BW: These guys wrote and illustrated a pretty well thought-out story that already had drama in it. It showed up long before it ever made the transition from graphic novel to a film. Would you say 66 pages? You had to take 66 pages of the graphic novel and turn it into 110 or 115 page script and try to fill 90 minutes of it. It was very ambitious and there were many days we said where are we? Robert always knew exactly what we were doing, what the scene was about. I think the story was already really dramatic and very easy to play and very easy to understand. If someone shows you a little too far, you’re going to shove back. All of us were shoving each other and shoving back.

In a world where the biggest movie-going demographic is teen boys, what does RED say about remaining relevant in old age?

BW: The word is certainly used and used in the title of the film. Retired, extremely dangerous. It’s commented on a couple times but when you see the film it’s right now. It’s hip. Karl Urban and I went at it in one of the toughest fights I’ve ever had in my life. … It was deliberately crafted along the lines of mixed martial arts and how violent that is. We were throwing each other around, literally throwing each other around. The fact that you see anyone who is reported to be retired in the film, they’re doing stuff that is sexy and hot and romantic and funny. It’s just one …

KU: Most fun I’ve had in years was having the opportunity to throw Mr Bruce Willis across the room and watch him smash into furniture so well. This film explores the old school techniques vs. new school techniques. They represent the way things used to be done. I play a character who reps the new breed of the CIA. You get to see those two different schools of thought go head to head. Old school is cool school.

HM: I would just say that as an older person, you bring a different energy to the piece and maybe it’s the energy of wisdom and the energy of experience. I think that in a sense is the story of the movie as well that people are bringing their deep experience normal to what they’re doing to this particular job.

What type of skills did you develop?

HM: Well, shooting a gun was all I had to learn really. Apart from that – - but that was fun to do and I did it. I think that that is their relevance amongst us. It’s to do with experience…

How’s your first time at Comic-Con so far?

HM: We were both virgins. We’re not anymore. I was just ravaged.

BW: Ravaged.

HM: I’ve had foreplay beforehand and now I got ravaged.

HM: That’s obviously what it’s all about isn’t it? I just went into the big room to see them. That’s what it’s all about. Understanding for the first time, this is where – we obviously travel in a bubble a lot of the time. There is where you actually get to have a really face to face experience with fans. The great thing about Americans is they’re permitted to be enthusiastic about stuff on a grand scale. For me as a Brit, it’s really exciting and endearing. It’s everything you love about America, that commitment and excitement and kind of an innocence about it. … get down and dirty with fans and people.

Why did you feel you had to do this project?

KU: For me that’s very different. This was a dream project in many ways. First off, the people involved. It is very, very rare that you get the opportunity to work on a project with so many extraordinarily talented people…

BW: I was talking with Lorenzo about this I think two years before we started shooting. There was never any way you or I could ever have imagined the richness of what a film could be that has a huge cast of characters in it when all those characters are played by actors you already know and I was already a fan of for a long time. I was excited all the time. What? Who’s? Oh. Just excited. I think we’re just starting to talk about it now. We’re starting to talk about it and get a response and find out how to respond in this film but one thing that’s going to be talked about a lot more is just the phenomenon of having this many actors and this many movie stars in a film being told a good story and telling an ambitious story that’s fun and funny and has action in it.

HM: Not The Queen, Bruce Willis, evening dress, machine gun.

WE: This is going back a long time for me. Seven years ago I read that. I’ve got to go to him to check it’s been that long. I don’t know that whole process from there to here is a bit bizarre. When things got rolling, my agent was telling me who’d been signed and I asked if she was drunk. There has not been a comic book adaptation with a cast like this and frankly there’s not going to be a film this year with a cast this quality.

BW: I hadn’t thought about it like that but I’m still a fan of films. I still go to movies all the time. I like to see what’s out there. I don’t know about you guys but I never think there’s any competition between films. I hear it said but I root for everybody’s film. I especially have a fond place in my heart for graphic novels, for comics. What’s really cool to me about coming here and seeing Comic Con and seeing 7000 people who all dig the same kind of thing is I’ve never seen it. I’ve never seen any other slice of the audience that’s all in one place and all really excited to be here. I think it’s a really cool thing to see. I think we all try to live up to the storyline and I would hope that – - I’d rather have you ask the guys that came up with the idea, did we live up to what that story was? Did we live up to taking htat material and a piece of art in one genre, translating it to another.

WE: I think they were all worried when I told them I knew where they lived. Right from the start I said it’s got to be an adaptation and not a translation. These are two different beasts. Nothing is served by trying to do a direct translation, besides the book is only 66 pages long. … I always knew it had to be expanded. I always knew it had to be an adaptation. If you go in with the mindset of I’ve got to protect my baby… You go have fun with this. The screenwriters I think did an astonishing job. They’ve added new characters, there are many new scenes but everything they’ve added speaks directly to the themes and original intent of the book. They never lose sight of that even when they lighten the tone. As the original author I couldn’t be happier.

Are you afraid of anything in you careers after so many years of acting?

BW: It’s my favorite part of making movies. There are lots of different parts of moviemaking that I participate in… My favorite part is the making of it. I’m scared every day. I keep thinking someone’s going to throw me the ball I’m going to go oh wow, oh god, I just messed that up. Not fear so much as excitement and not that thrill of you have to create something out of 115 typewritten pages and make it be human and lifelike. I think I’m much more afraid of making a mistake in raising my daughters than I would on any work that I do as an actor. It’s a much higher scale of fear, raising kids.

HM: I’m kind of frightened all the time. My life is just overcoming fear. First nights in the theater are always scary. Right now I’m terrified of rubbish in New York. Such a mountain of it. Where does it go? I’m terrified of plastic basically. Plastic packaging is scaring me right now. Get rid of it.

Do you collect?

BW: I don’t collect them but I’ve done a couple movies that are based on them. They all turn out to be really fun projects. Fun to do and there’s just more character in it. There’s just more stuff that’s already there that you can go to. For the most part, people would expect actors to fill in blanks anyway, but the blanks are not blanks anymore. Things you’re upset about, what is your beef, what is my beef in this film, it’s always a lot easier. I am afraid of other things. I thought you were just talking about filmmaking. I’m afraid of a lot of other things in the world.

Summit Entertainment was in the house with their panel for the graphic novel adaptation of RED with comic-book artist Cully Hamner, writer-creator Warren Ellis, actors Bruce Willis, Karl Urban, Mary-Louise Parker and Oscar winner Helen Mirren. The panel was actually pretty enjoyable. Mirren was hilarious. Urban was charming as usual, and Willis was — Willis. During the panel we got to see the new theatrical trailer for the film, and watch the actors get loose while answering some questions from fans.

A lot of people bitch and moan about graphic novels being adapted and most of the anger comes from the authors of the properties. We all know about Alan Moore and his personal hatred of Warner Bros’ Watchmen film. That wasn’t the case with writer Warren Ellis. He couldn’t care less about what the studio did with RED. He stated that he wanted to see what they could do with the film. He said, it’s meant to be an “adaptation not a translation.”

Ellis also made a dig at the other writers who get a little “too involved” with their movie adaptations specifically Mark Millar. After that the crowd let out a loud “Ooh” so Ellis backtracked and said “that’s going to get back to him in about 10 seconds.”

Everyone was entertaining in their own way. Willis spoke about how excited he was to work with everyone in the film especially Richard Dreyfuss. He even revealed that all the cast members came up a special nickname for him when they found out he was going to be in the movie.

“Oh my God, Jaws is gonna be here. That was our little code name for him, Jaws. I get to work with Jaws today,” said Willis.

Oh, Bruce. They may be old but their hilarious!

Bruce Willis may be well over 50 but he can still pop a cap in your ass! The veteran action star appears in the Summit Entertainment film RED, which centers on a group of retired assassins who reunite for one last job. The studio has released the first teaser poster for the film and it features Willis, a gun, and a lot of bullets. Take a peek…

The story for RED centers on Frank Moses (Willis), a former black-ops CIA agent, who is now living a quiet life. That is, until the day a hi-tech assassin shows up intent on killing him. With his identity compromised and the life of the woman he cares for, Sarah (Parker), endangered, Frank reassembles his old team (Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren) in a last ditch effort to survive.

The film is adapted from the DC Comics graphic novel by Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer. The film is directed by Robert Schwentke and is scheduled for release on October 15th. Here’s to hoping that this film isn’t a flop like Surrogates or Cop Out. Come on guys Willis needs a hit! Luckily for him he has a talented crew of actors and a fun premise to back up this project.

The first trailer has been released for Summit Entertainment’s comic adaptation, Red. It stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Mary Louise Parker, Richard Dreyfuss, Karl Urban, and Julian McMahon.
The story for Red centers on Frank Moses (Willis), a former black-ops CIA agent, who is now living a quiet life. That is, until the day a hi-tech assassin shows up intent on killing him. With his identity compromised and the life of the woman he cares for, Sarah (Parker), endangered, Frank reassembles his old team (Freeman, Malkovich and Mirren) in a last ditch effort to survive.

The film is based on the WindStorm Comics property of the same name that was created by Warren Ellis. The movie looks 10 times better than I thought it would so kudos to Robert Schwentke on his direction.

Who doesn’t want to see Helen Mirren shooting off massive rounds from an automatic weapon? What about John Malkovich doing what he does best: playing crazy? How about Freeman as a tracksuit wearing womanizer with a deadly aim? This is a project I can get behind!

Red hits theaters this fall on October 15, 2010.

What do you think of the first trailer for Red?

The live action adaptation of the graphic novel Red has finally begun production according to a press release sent out by Summit Entertainment. Yes, the studio behind Twilight has other interests besides the vampire series, and they’re also expecting this film to be a big hit.

Red won’t be your typical comic book movie thanks to its extraordinary cast led by Bruce Willis who is supported by Oscar winners Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman. “Weeds” star Mary Louise Parker is also on board, as well as, screen legend Ernest Borgnine who’s still around and kicking.

The story for Red centers on Frank Moses (Willis), a former black-ops CIA agent, who is now living a quiet life. That is, until the day a hi-tech assassin shows up intent on killing him. With his identity compromised and the life of the woman he cares for, Sarah (Parker), endangered, Frank reassembles his old team (Freeman, John Malkovich and Mirren) in a last ditch effort to survive.

Red is currently shooting in Toronto, Canada and is directed by Robert Schwentke. They will film in and around the Toronto metropolitan area for nine weeks before moving on to the road and ending in New Orleans in late March for the final two weeks of principal photography. The movie is scheduled for worldwide release on October 22, 2010. I don’t know about you but I hope this movie turns out to be one of the few great comic book films out there.

Do you think Summit can produce a successful adaptation of Red?

John Malkovich has been a busy bee lately, just coming off his stint in the DC Comics adaptation, Jonah Hex. The actor must have caught the comic book bug because rumor has it that he’ll appear in the Sony flick Spider-Man 4, and his been named as John C. Reilly‘s recast in Red. Is he pulling a Ryan Reynolds and forcing himself into every comic movie known to man?

With regards to Spider-Man 4, word on the street has the actor pegged to star as Vulture, an elderly bird-like villain. He was revealed to be in the lead for the part weeks ago but no confirmation had been given, until the recent release of an interview from an Italian sports show called “Quelli Che il Calcio.” Malkovich didn’t deny his involvement with the film, and stated that the movie has been delayed and he’s waiting for the final script to be sent to him.

Malkovich looks exactly like the Vulture character in the comics so visually he’s the perfect fit, plus the actor has talent in spades. The only problem is the popularity and appeal of Vulture might not be as overwhelming as someone like Venom or the Green Goblin. Personally, these villain choices aren’t that interesting because the logical bad guy for Sam Raimi and company to go for is The Lizard, but Sony doesn’t want to pursue it.

According to Variety Red, the upcoming graphic novel adaptation from Summit Entertainment has hit a casting bump. John C. Reilly was originally cast as an off the wall supporting character, but has jumped ship. He’ll be replaced by Malkovich who will fit right in with the cast of A-listers that include Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, and Helen Mirren. His character is described as someone who is “erratic and paranoid that everyone is out to kill him and joins Willis in is quest to find out who wants them dead.” Sounds like fun!

What do you think about Malkovich being cast in Spider-Man 4 and Red? Is he a good fit for either film?
