The Oscars have been announced so The Descendants – which was still a limited release – is going wide this weekend. One wonders when The Artist will follow. Since the front runner’s still in limited release, mainstream audiences can choose between Liam Neeson and wolves in The Grey, Katherine Heigl in One for the Money, and Sam Worthington in Man on a Ledge. Decisions, decisions. It’s likely last weekend’s winners will stay viable.

Kate Beckinsale jumped from one top spot to another. The fierce actress remained at the top of the box office with her new movie Underworld Awakening, which brought in a solid amount of $25.4 million. In the No. 2 spot was Red Tails which made a surprising solid debut of $19.1 million. Contraband, Beckinsale’s other movie, fell to No. 3. The heist thriller grossed $12.2 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $46.1 million. Five weeks after its debut, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close finally broke into the top 10 with $10.5 million, coming in before Stephen Soderbergh‘s Haywire. The 9/11 film came in at No. 4, while Haywire rounded out the top 5 with $9 million.

Oh, George. In his latest round of interviews for Red Tails, George Lucas told the New York Times that he’s going to retire from the big budget industry and make his art films, except to maybe make Indiana Jones 5. This is a drum Lucas has been beating for a long time, though we’ve seen no fruits of this labor. Perhaps this time he means it – Red Tails was once his passion project, and it gestated for over twenty years.

In one of the strangest movie moments in 2012, it appears that George Lucas may be pulling off something he hasn’t done in at least 20 or so years—releasing a movie that appears to be, well, good. That’s right, Lucas has produced and helped fund Red Tails, the upcoming film about the Tuskegee Airmen, the all-African American World War II combat pilots, and it actually looks pretty great. George Lucas has been talking about Red Tails for over two decades. He started dishing on the project around 1988, and even as he was going into production on the prequel trilogy, the title kept popping its head out. Lucas was supposed to direct, then he decided to back seat it as the executive producer. Instead TV journeyman Anthony Hemingway was brought in to direct and shooting commenced in 2009. Nobody gets to rush Lucas, though, so the film is now targeting a January 2012 release. Check out the trailer…

It’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about George Lucas’ upcoming Tuskegee war film Red Tails, but today we’ve got some news. According to FirstShowing, they’re reporting that the producer plans on doing a massive overhaul of the film that already wrapped production back in November. This can’t be a good sign.

Finally some information regarding George Lucas‘ long awaited Tuskegee Airmen pic Red Tails has come to the forefront. The film has been in development for what seems like a lifetime, but progress has been made and the cast is now filled. Red Tails will follow the trials and tribulations of the first African American aerial combat unit during WWII. According to IGN the cast will include several talented up and comers as well as established actors whom will be led by Oscar winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Terrence Howard.
