First Picture of Daniel Craig as James Bond in Skyfall

Yep, that’s Daniel Craig, and Empire is reporting that this is the first official picture of James Bond in Skyfall, the 23rd film in the franchise. The film is due out November 9 later this year, and shooting is underway, so there’s plenty of time to speculate what madness Bond gets into in this adventure. The film is being directed by Sam Mendes and also stars Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, Albert Finney, Naomie Harris, and Javier Bardem.

As for the content of the picture, perhaps this is setting up that it’s got a bunch of underwater action, like Thunderball or The Spy Who Loved Me, though perhaps Bond is being pensive after having killed someone (always a good bet). Or perhaps he’s hiding his embarrassment from having just peed in the pool.

Realistically, this says zero about anything except that Daniel Craig is in excellent shape, and at some point he feels the need to get in a pool. But pointless and useless speculation is the name of the game when it comes to a film as highly anticipated as this, so perhaps his legs hurt after having a skyfall. What a skyfall is will be revealed in the film, so there’s that to look forward to.

Sam Worthington Leads Wrath of the Titans Trailer

What happens when a film makes money but nobody likes it? You get a sequel anyway. Sam Worthington, star of Avatar - and still a charisma question mark – returns as Perseus to fight more monsters and romance Rosamund Pike, while scores of great English actors (Ralph Fiennes, Bill Nighy, Lian Neesson) play other gods. It couldn’t be as sloppily post converted as the last one, right? We’ll know for sure March 30, 2012, when the film opens. Until then, check out the trailer…

Besides the bad music choice (is this a gothic fantasy or a kick out the jams action spectacle?) It’s hard to say if this is an improvement over the first film, which borrowed some of the plot points from the 1981 film, but mostly just the villains and set up. There will be no unleashing of the Kraken in this film. For better or ill.

Basically, it’s all about how director Jonathan Liebesman (who recently helmed the well panned Battle Los Angeles) works with the effects and stages the action. This looks to be CGI-heavy spectacle, but there might be something fun to all this if it’s done with the right humor and the stunts and action are good. And it’s not as if the first film could have set the bar any lower, so there’s that.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 – Movie Review

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the long awaited finale is finally here, and though fans will be able to cheer along to the film, my biggest problem is that they won’t really be able to cry. It’s hard not to like this film on some levels because even though it would never stand alone and won’t be the film we all remember from the series, it’s the finale! As always there’s plenty of fine acting, another special effects Oscar win for them lined up, and our lovable characters, BUT it’s all turned into a bit of a Soap Opera and for the end of something SO grand, the film never really makes the decisions to emotionally or tonally go HUGE which was needed in order for it to truly succeed.

(Note: And if you want me to talk about the 3D I can’t and won’t. For all of the other films to be made in 2-D and then this one to swap at the last second was a miss-step and only showed a side of the series that Harry Potter himself would scoff at — it’s not all about money for the viewers. It’s a “smart” business move, but this film should be in 2-D, is beautiful that way, and the 3D is a waste of your time, money and integrity.)

The Plot:

The last film of the Harry Potter series. It all comes to an end.

The Good:

Our Trio: I still don’t know if it’s great casting, great teachers, growing up around such amazing actors, or just three amazing kids, but not only have our three main characters grown throughout the films, but they’ve grown into three mighty fine actors. Equivalents to the greats that supported them throughout the series. Despite the problems with the film, they’re always believable and seem to bring you back into almost any scene. This is their world and they were the ones who brought it to life for the audience – beautifully done.
Supporting Cast: Through the years, this has always been one of the highlights of the series, and once again it hasn’t failed them. Alan Rickman has always played one of my favorite characters and again he gives a great performance, Matthew Lewis who plays Neville Longbottom gave my favorite monologues of the film, Julie Walters as Molly Weasley fills your with delight and with one foul word will have you cheering… I can’t list everyone because I would just be listing the entire cast. All the little moments with the actors were really well done and appreciated.
The Effects: As always the Visual Effects department has stretched themselves and created an absolutely beautiful world for us to feast our eyes on (and no need for it to be done in 3D, the 2D color is better and gives you everything you need!.)

The Bad:

No Tears: I walked into this wanting to cry, wanting to get emotional, wanting to cheer and then sob my heart out — and there was nothing. There were moments of cheering, which was nice, but never I was never moved to emote anything more.Which leads to my overall problem of all of this being far too happy and never allowing for the film to settle in those dark moments and really revel in everything that’s happened and let the audience feel the severity of the situation. Also (SPOILER) when Voldemort finally faces off with Harry Potter, the last thing we want it a gag from Beatrix (who is great but was wrongly used in the moment). This was the moment we’ve been waiting for, for ten damn years! It’s a shame that it wasn’t taken more seriously.
Soap Opera-y: They had too much to explain and too many special effects to get in and as a result, it started to feel like they were forced to cram in as much information in one scene as possible so that they could spend time blowing up stuff in another. Harry was where? When? With who? She did what? Which means? Oh someone is running! But the action never had enough meaning to really hit home mainly because some of the exposition was weak at best and felt almost like an after-thought needing to tie things together.
Alan Rickman’s Make-Up: No excuses! A film like this should be visually perfect and despite the impressive special effects, Alan Rickman’s make-up was horrible! His eye liner looked like it was from Pirates of the Caribbean not ANY of the other Potter films! Small detail, but one that kept driving me nuts seeing as he’s one of my favorite characters!
The VERY End: (SPOILER) They’re supposed to have aged 19 years, Hermoine (Emma Watson) looked 25 tops, I don’t think it’s possible for a woman to age THAT gracefully (though maybe she knows a spell?). The only one who actually might have looked realistic was Ron (Rupert Grint), but overall the aging was really poorly done.
Didn’t Work as “Part 2″: I thought by them turning the last film into two films that they would have the time to really delve into the drama of it all, but instead the first film took away the severity needed to make the second film work. Without that direct pressure that the first film built, the second film is flimsy at best. Though I was excited about the idea of there being two films, they didn’t do it right. The ending would have meant so much more if both films would have been tied into one and they took out the excess and allowed the serious subject matter to really hit home.

Overall:

I loved Hogwarts the first time I saw it on the screen and the idea of it being destroyed and the series coming to a close is emotional, and I wanted to sob as I saw it fall to the floor, but the film just never moved me. The saddest part about this ending is the lack of sadness in the film. That being said, I’m still a fan of the series and perhaps watching both Deathly Hallows films back to back would give me the emotional closure I was hoping for. If you want to full effect, I’d recommend giving it a try.

Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes Confirmed for Clash of the Titans 2

Over the past year Liam Neeson has made some questionable career choices, with his most recent being Battleship. Now according to ComingSoon, we can expect to see him again in another glossy, action film, Clash of the Titans 2. The actor will reprise his role as Zeus in the 3D sequel and he’ll be joined by Ralph Fiennes who played his evil brother Hades in the first film.

The news comes courtesy of Clash producer Basil Iwanyk who says the duo will join Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, and a whole new group of people for the next 3D adventure.

“‘Clash of the Titans 2′ will go February 1st in the UK. Jonathan Liebesman, who just did this movie ‘Battle: Los Angeles‘, is directing it. We’re on early prep on that. It’s a huge movie and we want to do a much better job on it,” he told us. “Listen, we’re prideful people and we want to win and the 3D really helped us in a lot of ways, but we also took a lot of heat for it. I think for my own career and my own sense of purpose, I want this movie to rock… and it will.”

It sounds like they took the post-conversion 3D criticism to heart. The sequel will actually be shot using 3D cameras and he claims that they learned a lot about the tone they want for the film. Not too dark, but not to jokey either.

Nanny McPhee Returns: Movie Review

The stern babysitter with a magical cane has come back to the big screen in Nanny McPhee Returns. It’s a follow up to the 2005 film that starred Emma Thompson as an unconventional nanny who makes it her business to turn wild, unruly children into well behaved citizens. She tackles a new family with a new set of problems but as usual McPhee has the patience and know-how to get things done. Here’s our review…

The Plot:

Nanny McPhee (Thompson) arrives to help a harried young mother (Gyllenhaal) who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war. She uses her magic to teach the woman’s children and their two spoiled cousins five new lessons. She also has to deal with the brother of the absent father (Ifans) who’s trying to steal the farm right from under the mother’s nose.

The Good:

The Story: The overall idea of learning how to accept new people and work together is a universal theme that everyone can relate to. The message can be applied to both children and adults.
The Cast: The cast features several heavy hitters from the UK acting community in both large and small roles. The children were wonderful and Gyllenhaal did a much better job at faking a British accent than her brother (Jake) did in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. That was a pleasant surprise.
The Humor: The jokes were age appropriate and kept the story light despite its war torn backdrop.

The Bad:

The Pace: As an adult it was hard to get interested in the story at the very beginning. The film got off to a very slow start and that’s a problem if you want to keep the attention of younger viewers.
The Special Effects: There were several sequences that used CGI and one of them included swimming pigs. This would have been a sight to see if it wasn’t for their cartoonish look. The special effects need to be sharper and more realistic for anyone to take them seriously, whether it’s a child or an adult.

Overall:

Nanny McPhee Returns is a decent family film. It starts off slow but it has a good story to tell with a message that anyone can relate to.

Rating: 7.5/10

Early last year, it was announced that Ralph Fiennes would direct and star in a modern day adaptation of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus. Production began on the film early last spring and includes the acting talents of Gerard Butler, William Hurt, and Vanessa Redgrave. Several photos from the shoot have surfaced online and they have a Black Hawk Down /The Hurt Locker feel to them. Take a look and tell us what you think…

The original premise of Coriolanus centers on a Roman leader who faced a schism between the support of the Senate and the will of the plebeians. Citizens are angry at Coriolanus for withholding grain, but he earns a title as hero of Rome after facing down an army led by Tullus Aufidius (Butler). Upon his return to Rome, the mother of Coriolanus (Redgrave) encourages him to take a more active role in city politics. But his enemies push him into a rage, he rails against the idea of the plebeians having power, and is banished as a traitor. Coriolanus makes a deal with Aufidius to take revenge on Rome.

We’re not sure if they’ll translate the story directly from the book or if they’ll adapt it into modern English. For example, Baz Luhrmann’s rendition of Romeo + Juliet used the original Shakespearean dialogue in the script but everything else was present day. We wonder what route Fiennes will take?

Ralph Fiennes Corialanus First Set Photos

Ralph Fiennes directorial debut, if nothing else, is going to be interesting—the actor will be helming as well as starring in Coriolanus, a modern-day update of Shakespeare’s play of the same the name. Barry Ackroyd, cinematographer for both The Hurt Locker and Green Zone, will be lensing the adaptation, which originally centered on “a Roman general who attacked Rome after being exiled from the city.”

The film co-stars Gerard Butler (which doesn’t exactly make the film suck but if history has taught us anything, doesn’t help), Vanessa Redgrave, Brian Cox, and Jessica Chastain and is set in war-torn Serbia. /Film describes the plot:

“Coriolanus is a tragedy about the Roman leader Gaius Martius Coriolanus (Fiennes), a brilliant general who faced a schism between the support of the Senate and the will of the plebians. Got that? It’s sounds like somewhat of a gamble and updating Shakespeare has never been the surest of bets from the schlocky Romeo + Juliet to—God help us all—10 Things I Hate About You. That being said, Fiennes is a sharp actor, which hopefully makes his a great director.

Clash Of The Titans: Movie Review

Clash of the Titans will finally blast into theaters this weekend after a release date shuffle and a mundane 3D upgrade. The film is a remake of the 1981 Desmond Davis classic that hammers out all the stiff, campy elements we loved to make a gritty hard-hitting epic. The lead character doesn’t have any boyish charm or feathery hair, instead Sam Worthington takes over as Perseus the demigod son of Zeus, the only one who can stop Hades and his pet the Kraken from destroying mankind.

The Plot:

In Clash of the Titans, Sam Worthington plays the bastard son of Zeus who gets caught in a power struggle between the gods. Hades is the film’s villain, the vengeful god of the Underworld, and a brave Perseus volunteers to take him down when his family falls victim to his merciless hand. From that point on he makes it his life’s mission to keep him from gaining Zeus’s power and unleashing hell on earth.

The Good:

The Cast: There was an interesting mix of actors who all brought something special to their performances. With the exception of one (I’ll get to that below), everyone was entertaining and fun to watch. Even though Worthington, Fiennes, and Neeson were the selling points for the film, the supporting actors were just as enjoyable.
The Settings: There are a lot of special effects used in this movie, but the one thing Leterrier didn’t skimp on were the locations. The landscapes were all real, and you didn’t get that 300 feeling of everything being done in a studio. In the end, that authenticity accented the story and looked great on camera.
Costumes: The designers amped up the masculine factor with the soldiers costumes by making them look as strong as possible considering they were wearing skirts. After a while, you forget about their legs and you start concentrating on their fights. Yes, they do wear skirts, but skirts of armor.
The Action: The action sequences in the film are fun to watch. The last major fight (without spoiling anything) was the best out of the bunch. It features an old favorite from the original, which happens to be a winged horse.
Pegasus: Speaking of winged horses, Pegasus looks amazing here. There’s such a mystery surrounding him. He comes in and out throughout the movie, but he shows up when it counts. When he unites with Perseus it’s a beautiful sight to see.
Io: When it was first revealed that this character was created specifically for the remake it bothered me, but in the film you realize that she does serve a purpose. She’s not just there hanging out in the shadows looking pretty. She’s essentially a plot device to get Perseus from point A to point B.
The Kraken: The design for the killer beast was terrifying, which is great because that’s what the Kraken is supposed to be. When it’s finally unleashed at Zeus’ command all hell breaks loose (literally) and its introduction is priceless.

The Bad:

The Accents: A pet peeve of mine is whenever films are set in Greek or Roman times, the characters always have British accents and in the case of Clash of the Titans, we had Australian, British, American, and Danish. No one was on the same page. In Avatar and Terminator Salvation, it appeared that Worthington at least tried to cover his natural accent, but here he tossed it to the wind.
Alexa Davalos: I’ve seen Ms. Davalos appear in other projects and her acting was always up to par, but that isn’t the case here. She’s very stiff and comes across as doing an impression of someone from the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her regal English portrayal just doesn’t work.

Overall:

Despite a few character flaws, Clash of the Titans is an amazing movie. It’s pure popcorn entertainment and if you go into it with that type of mindset you won’t be disappointed.

5 New Clash of the Titans Posters

Here at ScreenCrave, we’ve deemed Clash of the Titans as one of the most anticipated films of 2010, and so far it’s lived up to the hype. The 2010 remake features an all-star cast with Liam Neeson, Sam Worthington and Ralph Fiennes along with The Incredible Hulk helmer Louis Leterrier directing. To add to our excitement 5 new posters have debuted from the film and one of them releases the Kraken!

Today, Warner Bros. released five new Clash of the Titans posters featuring nearly every major character in the film. We’ve got posters of the three, disgusting, slobbering, Stygian Witches, Zeus and Hades, and one of Worthington’s Perseus yelling at the top of his lungs with a giant scorpion in the background. On a side note, it’s been confirmed that the film will be released in 3D, and it’s debut has been pushed back to April 2nd, so mark your calenders.

Cemetery Junction Funny Movie Teaser

Academy-Award nominee Ralph Fiennes has joined the grand old writing/acting team Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant‘s in their first feature film together Cemetery Junction. Although shooting just started last month, a short but sweet trailer, or rather introduction video has just been posted for the film.

The trailer doesn’t give you much away, it merely the two directors having a good laugh with Fiennes — who has a surprisingly good sense of humor seeing as they spend the majority of time poking fun at him, in their own Gervais, Merchant way. For any of you who watched the amazing TV show “Extras” you’ve seen their style before, it’s hilarious.

Honestly, I’m already sold on the film. Take a look “trailer” the jump:

Cemetery Junction is a comedy set in the 70s and tells the story of three professional men working at an insurance company, who feel trapped in a small town and dream of escaping it. Freddie (Christian Cooke) wants to leave escape the life he has as a working-class man while Bruce (Tom Hughes) and Snork (Jack Doolan) are happy right where they are. But a meeting with an old school sweetheart (Felicity Jones) forces Freddie and the rest of the gang to make life-changing choices.

The film is set to be released sometime in 2010.

If you’re ready for a painful experience about war that will open your eyes and have you sitting at the edge of your seat, then you need to check out Kathryn Bigelow‘s new film, The Hurt Locker. The story is about three Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad soldiers who risk their lives and often give their lives trying to protect other soldiers by disarming bombs. It’s not an easy ride. The film has many intense emotional and action packed scenes that are gripping and terrifying simultaneously.

The film stars Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Evangeline Lilly, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse, and Guy Pearce. Without giving too much away, you don’t want to be an A-list movie star in this film. It seems Bigelow gave both Fiennes and Pearce a fairly rough ride in the film, although it was great to see them showing their support for the film. Even if she does kick their asses a bit.

Ralph Fiennes as Hades in Clash of the Titans?

The Clash of the Titan’s remake just got an epic push in the casting department. The film which currently stars Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, Mads Mikkelsen, and Alexa Davalos may be joined by Harry Potter alum, Ralph Fiennes. According to Variety, Fiennes has just “advanced” negotiations to star in the role of Hades, the god of Hell. Could you see him as anyone else? Incredible Hulk director Louis Letterier is directing Titans, which we can expect to hit theaters next year.

In another surprising move the role of Zeus, which was played by Sir Laurence Olivier in the original previously had Liam Neeson attached to star. His involvement with the project is uncertain at the moment due to the personal tragedy stemming from the untimely death of his wife, Natasha Richardson. As for Fiennes, his primary issue is timing. He’s set to start filming his role as Voldemort in the final installment of the Harry Potter franchise this fall, so he’s trying to tie up any open deals to avoid scheduling conflicts.

It looks like Letterier and Warner Brothers are actually trying to make this film decent. Everyone else I could toss to the wind, but I can’t overlook Fiennes’ talent. I wonder if this is how people felt about the 1981 version when Olivier and Maggie Smith co-starred as Zeus and Thetis?
