Terrence Malick’s Latest Gets New Title and Rating

Terrence Malick – cinema’s greatest mystery man – won last year’s Palme d’Or at Cannes for The Tree of Life, and with another film in the can it was wondered if his latest would play at the fest. That film (once titled The Burial) was not on the schedule, perhaps because back-to-back wins would be a very hard feat to pull off. But now we’ve got a new title for the film. It’s called To The Wonder, and it looks like it’s nearing release because it has an MPAA rating.

It got an R rating for “some sexuality/nudity.” Oooooh. The film stars Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Olga Kurylenko, Javier Bardem, Rachel Weisz, and Barry Pepper – though with Malick’s editing style, it’s possible that one or more of these actors could be cut out of the film or show up for scant seconds.

There’s a synopsis that hit a couple months back, and Collider noted it, it says

“It concerns a philanderer (Affleck) who, feeling at loose ends, travels to Paris, where he enters a hot-and-heavy affair with a European woman (Olga Kurylenko). Said Lothario returns home to Oklahoma, where he marries the European woman (in part for visa reasons). When the relationship flounders, he rekindles a romance with a hometown girl (McAdams) with whom he’s had a long history.”

If Terrence Malick was younger, this title (and probably his films) would be called twee, though there’s a philosophical bent to his movies that makes such a description look silly. What’s interesting here is that Ben Affleck is working with Malick. The two have known each other for a long time, and Affleck thanked the director in his Gone Baby Gone credits, and Malick also received thanks for Good Will Hunting. Perhaps working together had some effect on Argo.

It looks like the producer are shopping the film at Cannes, so perhaps it just doesn’t have domestic distribution yet – Malick’s never been a big earner. But it seems likely that the film will hit theaters sometime this fall for awards season. Malick is keeping busy, though, and he’s already shooting his next two films back to back. He got the fever for the flavor of filmmaking again. And that’s pretty exciting.

Midnight in Paris: Movie Review

Woody Allen‘s highly mysterious (and rightfully so) film Midnight in Paris has made its way back from Cannes and will be appearing in theaters in America this weekend. For me, this is one of my favorite Woody Allen films in a long time. It’s not necessarily what you would expect from Allen, though it does follow certain patterns we’ve come to know from him and one can definitely see references to his earlier work. There’s something both nostalgic and yet fresh about the film that makes it fun to watch. It’s finely made, finely acted and overall a fine picture to find yourself at this weekend…

The Plot:

Mightnight in Paris is romantic comedy with a twist (that will not be given away in this review). The film starts with a couple traveling to the French capital for business and their different reactions to the world around them. The party includes a young engaged couple forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is better.

The Good:

The Acting: For me Corey Stoll who plays Ernest (no need for a last name here) steals the show. He does a fantastic job of bringing his character to life in a fun and lively way. Wilson is one of Allen’s best leads in a while, mainly because he’s so NOT Woody Allen like. His laid back persona allows you to watch a Woody Allen film without watching Woody Allen. Michael Sheen, brilliant as an American playing an anglophile. Alison Pill, Kathy Bates, Tom Hiddleston (I’m just listing the cast now) and all the rest all gave wonderful and surprising performances.
The Concept: Without giving anything away, it’s a bit far-fetched and not something entirely new, but the way that Allen handles the idea with such a nonchalance is really quite fun.
The Scenery: Allen and his cinematographer Darius Khondji really do an amazing job of capturing the feel, almost the smell of Paris in the spring time. They take their time establishing the location, light the scenes in a way that makes everyone and everything glow, and use some classic music to help you take it all in. Really well done.

The So-So:

Not Broad: This is not a film for everyone, and without giving too much away, you need to have a certain amount of knowledge of art history and literature and desire to know more about it in order to really find the film amusing. If you’re a nerd like me, it’s a blast and really fun to see so many well known faces, as well known names on the big screen.
Allen Cliches: It’s hard not to see patterns repeating themselves, it’s up to you whether you see that as good or bad. I for one didn’t mind them, in fact I rather enjoyed them, others may easily have a different opinion and one I can understand, just not relate to.

Overall:

This was a really interesting film and if you have any knowledge of literature or art your will definitely appreciate the references and find it humorous. It’s one of Allen’s better films of late, it’s extremely well made and the acting is superb. It was really a pleasant, fun experience to sit down to, and one well worth watching,

Terrence Malick is a serious mystery. The reclusive director is known for taking abnormally long breaks between films, but he’s decided to change his pattern. Malick has two recently shot films that have yet to hit theaters. The first one is The Tree of Life, which stars Sean Penn and Brad Pitt, and the other is an untitled drama that features Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams. Over on THR, they debuted the first image from the latter film. Check out the full photo…

As we previously stated the film doesn’t currently have a title. All we know, is that Affleck and McAdams co-star alongside Javier Bardem and Olga Kurylenko. How did Kurylenko get a role in this? We have no idea. This film is described as a romance drama that has an ensemble cast. Ensemble usually means more than four, so where’s everyone else hiding?

Back in August we reported that Affleck had replaced Christian Bale in a Terrence Malick in film, and this must be it. At that time, there were rumors that Affleck’s role would be of a fisherman.

How does the man do it? As much as people complain about invasion of privacy and paparazzi. We haven’t see or heard anything about this movie in months!

Morning Glory: Movie Review

This week you can expect a pleasant surprise when you stumble across Roger Michell’s latest film, Morning Glory. While maneuvering your way through alien invasion flicks and movies about runaway freight trains, Morning Glory is a hilarious alternative with great performances and a sharp screenplay.

The Plot:

Becky (McAdams) is a workaholic whose dream is to executive produce a national morning show — specifically NBC’s “The Today Show.” A monkey wrench is thrown into her plans when she’s fired from her current job and forced to move in with her mother until she can get back on her feet. Luckily for her, a position opens up at the lowest rated morning show in the country called “Daybreak.” Despite her lack of experience, and the lack of respect she receives from the cast and crew, Becky makes it her business to make the show a success.

She finds a loophole in the contract of a legendary news anchor named Mike Pomeroy (Ford) that forces him to join “Daybreak” as a co-anchor. Her drive to push the sensational envelope and his style of no nonsense journalism make the two an unlikely pair. In other words, inappropriate jokes and hijinks ensue!

The Good:

The Humor: This film is legitimately funny. The banter between all of the characters is snarky but still fresh and clever. For the first time, in a long time you’ll feel like you’re watching a genuine workplace comedy. Morning Glory has “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” written all over it with the only difference being words like “shit” and “pap smear” being said on camera.
The Set Design: The set up for “Daybreak” is supposed to mimic that of “The Today Show” and “Good Morning America” and it’s obvious. There’s a hardcore, low key newsroom, and a bright, over the top stage that features the on air talent. It’s a carbon copy.
Rachel McAdams: A lot of people consider The Notebook to be Rachel McAdams’ breakout movie, but she had to share the spotlight with two other guys there. In Morning Glory she does her fair share of sparring with Ford but the heart and soul of the film is Becky. She’s smart, quirky, relatable, and most importantly likable enough for audiences to enjoy the performance. McAdams does an amazing job.
The Tone: Judging from the trailer, Morning Glory looks somewhat goofy, but the movie does have its tender moments. It knows when to make you laugh and when to make you cry. There’s a time and a place for everything and Morning Glory is aware of that.

The Bad:

More Jeff Goldblum Please: I love dramatic Jeff Goldblum, and sci-fi action Jeff Goldblum, but comedic Jeff Goldblum has to be the best out of the bunch and he was nowhere to be seen in this movie. He dropped a couple of quips here and there but he was mostly the straight man against McAdam’s character.

Overall:

Morning Glory is a really entertaining, refreshing, and funny workplace comedy that features A-list talent bringing their A-game. This is definitely worth your hard earned money this weekend.

Rating: 9/10

Morning Glory Posters Channel Rock Group Oasis

Three new character posters have been released in promotion of the upcoming workplace comedy, Morning Glory. The film stars Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, and Diane Keaton, whom are all featured below. Morning Glory hits theaters on November 12th and aside from the trailer released back in May we haven’t seen much promotion for it. Hopefully, this is the beginning of some much needed marketing. The premise for Morning Glory centers on a young TV producer who works for a morning news show that happens to be tanking in the ratings. In a last ditch effort to revitalize the program she hires a veteran news anchor (Ford) to join the show but he butts heads with the current female host and former beauty queen played by Keaton. He doesn’t want to cover gossip or fashion or any of the frilly topics that the show has to offer. It’s old school meets new school and the laughs ensue.

The movie looks pretty funny and we hope it does well. It would be great to see Ford in a successful film that has nothing to do with whips, arcs, or aliens. Also, any movie that uses a slogan, which happens to be the title of one of our favorite albums deserves our support. Come on, What’s the Story Morning Glory?, the awesome LP from Oasis, rocked the mid-nineties and still does today. You know you love it!

Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum Join The Vow

Two Nicholas Sparks veterans are joining forces for another dramatic sap-fest entitled, The Vow. According to Variety, Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams will star in a new book adaptation but this time the story will be based on actual events. The film will bring the drama, so don’t forget the tissues, because you’ll be flooded with tears…

The Vow centers on a newlywed couple Kim and Krickitt Carpenter, who face one of the biggest battles of their lives and marriage when Krickett loses all her recent memory in a car accident and has to struggle to rebuild her identity.

According to the book’s description, a massive head injury leaves her in a coma for weeks and when she finally emerges she recognizes her parents and everyone else — but not her husband. Dun, dun, dun dun!

It sounds like this will be one of those love stories where the two protagonists have to find their way back to each other by falling in love all over again. The Vow is scheduled to begin filming at the end of August in Chicago and Toronto. The film is directed by Michael Sucsy.

Morning Glory Trailer With Harrison Ford, Rachel McAdams

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a big screen workplace comedy that actually made us laugh and director Roger Mitchell‘s new film, Morning Glory might put an end to that drought. Not only does it look funny but it has an amazing cast including Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, Jeff Goldblum, Rachel McAdams, Patrick Wilson, and the awesome Ty Burrell from ABC’s “Modern Family.” What more could you ask for? Check out the trailer…

The film actually looks funny and its great to see Ford in a comedy that has a decent story. He’s always hilarious in interviews so we know he has a personality and the timing to pull off this material. The rest of the cast is just icing on the cake. Rachel McAdams can do no wrong.

Morning Glory will hit theaters on November 12, 2010.

Adrien Brody Confirmed For Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris

Today legendary director Woody Allen finally decided to reveal the full cast for his upcoming mystery project, Midnight in Paris. In the past we’ve picked up on one or two actors like Marion Cotillard and Owen Wilson and now we’ve learned that Oscar winner Adrien Brody has joined the film. Here’s the complete cast list along with a brief synopsis…

The Synopsis:

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS is a romantic comedy that follows a family travelling to the city for business. The party includes a young engaged couple that has their lives transformed throughout the journey. The film celebrates a young man’s great love for Paris, and simultaneously explores the illusion people have that a life different from their own is better.

The film stars Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Carla Bruni, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Michael Sheen, Owen Wilson, Nina Arianda, Kurt Fuller, Tom Hiddleston, Mimi Kennedy, Alison Pill and Corey Stoll.

Production on Midnight in Paris begins this summer in you guessed it…France! Out of this bunch of actors we’re mostly interested in seeing Tom Hiddleston because he’ll be playing the main villain in Marvel’s Thor next year. We want to see what he’s got!

Woody Allen Reveals Cast and Details of Midight of Paris

Woody’s at it again! The man just won’t quit! Especially when he’s signed into a three part deal with Allen’s Gravier Productions and Mediapro, the Spain-based company which also funded Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona and the upcoming You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger which will be released later this tear by Sony.

Today Woody Allen revealed the details and cast of his upcoming film that he’s beginning pre-production on titled Midnight in Paris starring the dynamic, star-studded cast of Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates and Carla Bruni. Also in the cast are Michael Sheen, Nina Arianda, Tom Hiddleston, Corey Stoll, Mimi Kennedy and Kurt Fuller. The film shoots this summer in Paris. Sounds like fun!

Rachel McAdams Cast in Woody Allen Film

The cast continues to grow for Woody Allen’s untitled Parisian project. The award winning director has managed to snag Rachel McAdams for a part in the film, that will feature her Wedding Crashers co-star Owen Wilson, and Oscar winner Marion Cotillard. After coming off last December’s Sherlock Holmes, a small Woody Allen movie might be a refreshing break for the actress.

Woody Allen is notoriously known for not divulging specifics when it comes to his developing projects. When we say he keeps the details under wraps we mean it. The only thing we know for sure is the setting, which will be a backdrop of Paris, France. We also know that the shoot is scheduled to begin sometime this summer.

Allen’s films typically take place in New York City but lately he’s been taking a more international approach. With the exception of last year’s Whatever Works, it’s been a while since we’ve seen that old school New Yorker mentality pop up in his movies. We also don’t know if this will be a comedy or a drama, Wilson’s casting might indicate that humor will be involved, but who knows? He might surprise us with something darker.

Christian Bale Cast in Terrence Malick Film

Terrence Malick’s next film is on the horizon and he plans on filling it with a talented and epic cast. The director has wrangled together a unique group of actors to star in an untitled romantic drama that will have Christian Bale leading the way. According to Deadline Hollywood, Malick will direct the film from a script he also wrote.

Who will join Batman in this ensemble feature? A Mean girl, a Bond girl, and a guy known for having a temper and a bad hair cut. Rachel McAdams, Olga Kurylenko, and Javier Bardem are all set to star in the film, which will begin production this fall. It will be produced by Nicolas Gonda, Sarah Green and Bill Pohlad and distributed internationally by FilmNation Entertainment.

FilmNation CEO Glen Basner added: “Terry is easily among the greatest and most influential filmmakers of our time. It’s an honour to work with such a visionary. FilmNation is thrilled to help bring his next work to a global audience.”

Malick is one of the most reclusive directors in Hollywood, and has only directed a handful of of films including Badlands, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line, and The New World. Is anyone else interested in seeing Kurylenko play something other than the object of someone’s desire? She’ll probably still portray that in this film, but hopefully with better dialogue.

Sherlock Holmes: Movie Review

It’s finally time for Guy Ritchie’s good ol’ English detective novel turned blockbuster, Sherlock Holmes to hit the screen with mega-stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams. From deconstructing sight scenes to watching Watson and Holmes bickers like an old married couples, this is definitely the entertaining adventure that you’re all hoping it will be.

Let’s take a deeper look below…

The Good:

RDJ: You should already know what I’m going to say… he’s great. Fun to watch, attractive, clever, quick, overall, he’s the whole package. Technically he’s a bit too old, but he’s got enough tricks of his sleeve and boyish charm to help you forget.
First Act: Every moment of the first act is solid fun. The acting, the set design, the writing, the camera movements, everything is fast, to the point, and enjoyable to watch. Sadly, they don’t quite keep up the momentum throughout the rest of the film but they do, do a damn good job at trying.
Dialogue between Jude and Robert: Quick, witty, and harmoniously troublesome, much like a married couple at times — there were moments where it almost felt like we were watching a play or a great improv scene go perfectly right.
Simple Action: Although Ritchie uses the massive crane shots and extreme special effects, he does so sparingly. A large hammer vs. a small hammer used correctly is all you need to make a fight scene both interesting and funny. When he did use crazy special effects scenes, he didn’t drag them out. Often directors like to point our where they’ve spent their money, but Richie let them come and go quite naturally for the most part.
Very Richie: The fight scenes are text book Guy Richie. Some of you will love them, some of you won’t, but he stays true to what he knows and loves.

Bad:

Make-up: There was way too much for this time period. Maybe a bit of rouge on the checks and charcoal on the eyes, but not the full 2009 harlot look. McAdam’s is beautiful enough, she doesn’t need that much junk on her face and it takes away from the authenticity of the film.
Repetitive: Although they have a few good gags, they recycle them over and over again. Once you’ve seen the first 30 minutes you’ve seen it all, after that, you’ll just have to see the same tricks in slightly different ways.
Length: This is a common problem for me, but it was 15 minutes too long, mainly due to a few too many subplots that could have easily been cut.

Overall:

This film is well worth a trip to the theater if you’re looking for a fun ride that is easy to watch. It’s not perfect by any means, but if you’re looking to be entertained for a a few hours without having to think or feel too much, or if you need something to plop the family in front of during the Holiday, it’ll definitely do the trick.
