Summit Producing Push The TV Series

How many rip-offs of “Marvel’s X-Men” can television take? If you thought NBC’s “Heroes“ was too much, or even the syndicated show “Mutant X,” check out “Push: The Series.” Remember the here today gone tomorrow movie with Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning starring as people with powers? The film fell prey to bad marketing last year, but had a decent concept, and now Summit Entertainment and E1 want to bring it to TV.

According to a recent press release, the pilot episode of “Push” will be scripted by David Hayter, who conveniently penned X-Men, X2: X-Men United, and Watchmen. The TV series will be the first step in Summit’s plan to expand into the global television market place, and they believe their partnership with E1 will ensure that it happens. The series will reportedly be an extension of the science-fiction thriller, centered on people with paranormal powers who band together to take down a corrupt government agency.

Too bad you won’t see Evans or Fanning make an appearance on the show, or will they? Who knows. I’m not sure if they’re planning on recasting the same characters from the film or starting off with a new group. The studio is currently in negotiations with several Stateside broadcasting company’s to find the show a home.

If NBC has “Heroes,” Fox has “Fringe” and “Human Target,” and ABC has “Flash Forward” and “V,” where will “Push” go? I think there’s a lot of sci-fi stuff on the air at the moment, but I think ABC would be it’s best bet followed by Fox. The real question is how many shows with this premise can audiences’ take? I was 100 percent down with “Heroes” when it first came out, and now I want it off my screen.

New DVD Releases: Knowing, Push, The Unborn

It’s time to get serious people! Push the intensity (not necessarily the quality) to 11 and you’ve got: Knowing, Push, and The Unborn all rolling into stores. That along with some classic TV shows such as “Matlock” and “Murder She Wrote” along with newer comedies such as “Kath and Kim.” And then, of course, we have three horrible straight-to-DVD releases to whet your MST3K appetite.

Speaking of which, MST3K’s 15th Volume hits shelves this week along with plenty of mid-90s TV classics on DVD. Check out the full list below…

Knowing

Starring: Nicolas Cage

There was a time where Nicolas Cage was a brilliant up-and-coming actor. He had an Oscar in tow from Leaving Las Vegas, and classics like Moonstruck and Raising Arizona on his resume. Plus, Francis Ford Coppola for an uncle! A recipe for superstardom if there ever was one.

But now? He’s something a little, uh, less than an immortal movie star. In fact, he’s about one more darkly strange bald mullet away from reaching Seagal-level mockability. He’s another weird pseudo-thriller away from becoming a punchline on the level of Van Damme.

It may actually already be too late. According to his IMDB page his next three films are voiceovers for G-Force and Astro Boy along with something called Kick-Ass.

So buy this DVD and experience the last moment before Nicolas Cage became a complete joke.

The Unborn

There isn’t much to say about this movie. It’s just like every single other early-year horror movie that costs $20MM and makes $60MM. Well, there is one difference. This movie does feature a trailer where the kid who plays the little kid in every single movie punches the film’s lead actress.

So the inclusion of the theatrical trailer may be reason enough to buy the DVD.

“Kath & Kim” – The Complete Series

Okay, so this set is actually being billed as “Season One” of the series, despite the fact that it was canceled about four months ago. But here it is on DVD in all its Floridian glory!

This show received scads of negative press, mostly because it didn’t have the charm of the Australian original. Nevertheless, it is actually pretty funny, particularly John Michael Higgins as Kath’s fiancee.

The show is certainly funnier than NBC’s torpid “Parks & Recreation” and received similar ratings. Yet one survives while the other can only be seen by buying the DVD.

Five Fingers

The Case to Vote for It: Ryan Phillipe is a legitimate star. So is Laurence Fishburne. They made a movie about terrorists capturing a charity worker and it went straight to DVD. That can’t be good. Plus, the box says the film features Phillipe engaging in a “Mental Chess Match”. That really can’t be good.

Night Train

The Case to Vote for It: Here’s the thing to know about Night Train. It seems that when you ride it, the next stop may be your last.

Also, Danny Glover, LeeLee Sobieski and Steve Zahn pay a trio of train riders who discover a dead man’s suitcase contains some treasure. And they got to great lengths to keep it for themselves.

The Case to Vote for It: This movie stars Kel Mitchell. As in Keenan and Kel Kel Mitchell.

That’s probably enough to include this, but the fact that the film follows the story of a man whose manhood dissapears following a voodoo priestess’ curse really puts it over the top.

Weekend Box Office: Chick Flicks Rule Taken Drools

Well it looks like the women have decided this weekends box office top film. Never have I seen more hoards of men-less woman (aside from Sex and the City) filling in the theaters to see He’s Just Not That Into You. There are plenty of things for a guy to enjoy in this movie (Scarlett Johnspn with almost nothing on anyone?) but I don’t think they’re willing to risk it. They need to get one to go and the rest will follow. Coraline made it to number three this week, which is pretty damn good for a stop-frame animation. Hell it beat out all the other movies opening this weekend including The Pink Panther 2 and Push.

It’s almost scary how grown up Dakota Fanning is. I’ve interviewed a lot of people and she handled this like a pro. She was flirty, fun, open, and yet only talked about what she wanted to talk about. Chris Evans definitely has a lot to work with.

Is it just me, or does it look like these two are about to get it on in the interview? There was definitely something going on that I didn’t know about.

The interview started out with me being announced as someone from French television and Djimon trying to speak to me in French. I don’t speak French. And I think for some reason he was offended by that. I mean, I never said I spoke French! Give a girl a break!

Oh well. I promised I would study up for next time, so I gotta hit the books. Enjoy the interview below…

Posters: Push, Fast and the Furious 3, Land of the Lost

A new poster has just been released for Paul McGuigan’s sci-fi fantasy film, Push. If your a fan of the TV show Heroes, your going to love this movie. It’s like X-Men, but with Dakota Fanning. Push will hit theaters February 6, 2009, and stars the “Human Torch” Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), Camilla Belle (10,000 BC) and Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond).

The third installment of the Furious franchise, which reunites original castmates Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster, has a new poster! Fast & Furious: New Models Original Parts drops April 3, 2009, and is directed by Justin Lin.

Will Farrell’s update of the old school TV show Land of the Lost, has also debuted a new poster today. The film co-stars actress Anna Friel, from the now defunt ABC series Pushing Daises, and is directed by Brad Silberling. You can expect to “get lost” on June 5, 2009. Yeah, that was corny, but you loved it!

PUSH Trailer Has Fanning in a Mini Skirt

Coming in February 2009, is Paul McGuigan’s new film Push, an action packed thriller about people with secret powers hiding from the government. The trailer kind of looks like an expensive two hour “Heroes” episode to me at this point. The film stars Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning (in a mini skirt and hooker boats, which should NOT be happening, especially since she still looks about 11 year-old), Camilla Belle, and Djimon Hounsou.

Official synopsis: Push burrows deep into the deadly world of psychic espionage where artificially enhanced paranormal operatives have the ability to move objects with their minds, see the future, create new realities and kill without ever touching their victims. Against this setting, a young man and a teenage girl take on a clandestine agency in a race against time that will determine the future of civilization.
