If you’re a movie coming out this weekend that doesn’t have a vampire or a werewolf as its central character, you’re screwed. No one stands a chance against the Goliath that is New Moon, but here are a list of today’s opening releases that will more than likely be overshadowed by drawn on abs and red contacts.

If you’re looking for a heart-warming drama, check out Sandra Bullock‘s new film, The Blind Side, and for a more kid-friendly vibe there’s the animated alien feature, Planet 51. The rest of the films listed are in limited release, so check out the tickets and times to see if they’re playing at a theater near you.

Here are a few more photos from the Comic-Con exhibition floor. We got a shot of an official poster for the animated film Planet 51, as well as a statue of He-Man, and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. The Wolverine statue is made out of wax, and I’m surprised he hasn’t melted in all this San Diego heat. The air conditioning system is barely cutting it.

Stay tuned for more photos from the first official day of the convention.

planet5109 7 3 Theatrical Trailer for Planet 51

So far, Planet 51 looks like a hit. The more they show us, the better it gets. The premise of us being the aliens for once opens up the door for many interesting comparisons and possibly funny moments.

Directed by newcomers Jorge Blanco and co-directors Javier Abad and Marcos Martinez comes a story about a US astronaut who arrives up Planet 51, only to find he has disrupted their normal, 50′s lifestyle. Just like us, the inhabitants of Planet 51 live in fear of alien invasion, so an astronaut arrives from Earth the imagine the worst. The cast includes voice work from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Seann William Scott, Jessical Biel, Justin Long, Gary Oldman, and John Cleese.

Finally, we’re the invaders instead of the invaded! I know this is more of a “kids” movie, but I think it looks phenomenal! I love how they model their “pets” after the scary, many eating aliens in the Alien series.

3d 3D Movies: Worth an Extra $5?

In 2009 there will be at least 14 films released in the United States in 3D, including the long awaited James Cameron “Avatar”. Studios from Dreamworks to Disney are expanding facilities, hiring new programmers and animators all in the hope that filmgoers will continue to flock to 3D. So far, the format has proved lucrative. Although only 20% of the screens Beowulf played on were 3D, they ultimately accounted for 40% of its receipts. Part of that was due to a greater amount of warm bodies in the 3D seats, but more importantly, part of that was due to the extra cash paid by the Imax patrons who saw it in 3D.  Now, Imax format has always commanded an extra fee over a regular screen, but come on, three stories of visuals is kinda worth it, don’t you think?  A regular screen with 3D?  What’s that worth?  Apparently, an extra Lincoln.
