Piranha 3D didn’t break any box office records when it debuted in theaters back in August, but it still earned enough to warrant a sequel. Shortly after the film’s release Dimension Films sent out a press release stating their plans for a follow up. We knew another movie was coming our way but we had no idea how quickly it would arrive. According to Deadline, it will be in theaters by 2011. They’re not wasting any time.

The technological innovations that James Cameron have created makes him somewhat of a 3D connoisseur. He takes the medium very seriously and is not a fan of films that misuse and abuse the format. He recently spoke to Vanity Fair Magazine, and said that the new thriller Piranha 3D is “exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D. Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like Friday the 13th 3-D.”

Well the producer of the film Mark Canton, took Cameron’s words to heart and wrote a long letter reminding the director that he “didn’t invent 3D.”

In case you haven’t already run out to see Piranhna 3D or have recently thought about going to see it because you know there will be a sequel and you want to be able to say “no I saw this original, this is a masterpiece compared to that!” Or are just impressed to see Elizabeth Shue back on the big screen with no less than Ving Rhames, than FunnyOrDie has a little treat for you.

Over the weekend, the Dimension Films’ thriller Piranha 3D opened at number 6 at the box office grossing 10 million dollars.  For most movies that amount would definitely NOT warrant a sequel, but this film is a special case. According to the studio, Piranha 3D 2 is in development and there’s nothing we can do to stop it.

Piranha 3D, is what happens when you put Jaws, Joe Dante’s Piranha, and every semi-pornographic spring break film you can find into one movie. This weekend Jerry O’Connell along with a slew of other actors will hit theaters in a little thriller called Piranha 3D. It’s a satire of the genre with its blatant references to Jaws, and its over the top nudity that’s usually present in C-grade horror flicks. O’Connell, who started out as a child actor loved working on the movie not because of the light subject matter but because he got to play a complete and utter asshole. Yep, he’s a douche, a jerk, and any other word that fits in with those three.
