Morgan Freeman’s a Dirty Old Man

Oscar winner Morgan Freeman is known for playing paternal and respectful figures in film but according to THR, his latest role will have him tossing that image out the window. According to the trade, Freeman has landed a role in a Warner Bros comedy tentatively entitled, Dirty Old Men. The film already has Peter Segal attached to direct, and is expected to take Freeman in a direction we’ve never seen him in before.

Dirty Old Men will center on “an aging playboy who finally meets the love of his life and his best friend and wingman for the past 40 years (Freeman) who does everything to break up the new couple.” Can you imagine Freeman as someone’s wingman? The studio already has an actor in mind who could play opposite Morgan, and they’re aiming for Jack Nicholson. After the sentimental hit The Bucket List back in 2007, it’s been proven that the actors have amazing chemistry together.

Nicholson hasn’t formally attached himself to the film, but sources say he’s aware of the project. This will be an interesting role for Freeman to take on at this point in his career. Even though he’s had his time to shine within the past few decades by playing upstanding characters, his resume wasn’t always so squeaky clean.

One of the most underrated Freeman performances comes from the 1987 drama, Street Smart. It earned the actor his first Academy Award nomination, and gave him the opportunity to play the lowest of the low. He was a no nonsense pimp named Fast Black, and he really showed how bad he could be. Plus, who can forget his over the top performance in Wanted, where he was pretty much the same character except for the pimp part. Dirty Old Men, will definitely be on the lighter side of his devious spectrum, but it won’t be his first trip to the dark side.

Warner Bros. Gives The Jetsons to Peter Segal

A few months ago we told you that Spy Kids director Robert Rodriguez would be taking The Jetsons to the big screen. One of our concerns was if he would actually be able to deliver such a project with so many others (Machete, Predators) on his plate — the answer is no.

According to Cinema Blend, Warner Bros is bringing in a replacement and it comes with a slight hint of cheese. Anger Management and Get Smart director Peter Segal will be directing the live action adaptation of The Jetsons. It does seem like they’ve done from one extreme to another. There is no doubt that Rodriguez and Segal will have two very different interpretations of the same film.

Whether you like the trade or not, the good thing about having Segal as director is that he’ll be able to get the job done, and perhaps he’ll throw in some good comedy. In a way, I think he actually makes more sense in the Jetsons world than Roriguez. I’m not a huge fan of Segal, but 50 First Dates worked for me.

The project will start fresh; Warner Bros. has thrown away Rodriguez original script (which rumor has it, did attract Jim Carrey to join the project). The search for new writers will begin once Segal signs the contract.

There’s no word on when the film is scheduled to come out, but we’ll keep you updated.

DC’s Shazam Movie Gets a Writer

Will the Shazam aka Captain Marvel talk ever end? The live action adaptation of DC Comic’s Shazam movie has been in development for a very, very long time. It has hit a couple of snags in the past year, but it manages to keep coming back for more. Back in January, Superherohype reported that the film wasn’t happening. Fast forward seven months later, and not only is it back on, but with a new writer. Find out more below.

According to THR, Warner Bros has hired a writer to adapt the script for the feature film based on the popular comic book character. Actor-turned-writer Billy Birch has been brought on to bring the story to life. He’ll be helped by Geoff Johns, one of the three DC Comics heavyweights hired by the studio to act as consultants on DC projects.

The comic is centered on a teenage boy by the name of Billy Batson, who becomes a superhero named Captain Marvel when he shouts the magic word, “Shazam.” “The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Aries, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.”

The trade is reporting that Peter Segal is still attached to direct the film, with Michael Ewing producing. How are we going to make this work? Who wants to see Captain Marvel on the big screen? I believe his character was created to capitalize off of the popularity of Superman back in the day. The last film we had that centered on the Man of Steel didn’t fare too well, so maybe they should let this go.

Will Peter Segal Direct Little Fockers?

Someone’s doing incredibly well for themselves during the recession, and it’s director Peter Segal. His career has been on fire these last few years, and its showing no signs of slowing down. Segal directed the hits Anger Management with Adam Sander and last year’s theatrical version of Get Smart starring Steve Carell and Dwayne Johnson. According to Empire, the director is a prime candidate to helm the coveted Ben Stiller property, Little Fockers.

Jay Roach was originally on board to direct the third installment of the Meet the Parents franchise but is unavailable to do so. Now the job is up for grabs, and that’s music to Segal’s ears. Even though he hasn’t officially committed to the position, he’s supposed to be meeting with producer and star Robert De Niro, along with Jane Rosenthal this week.

The script for the film has been written by John Hamburg who directed this week’s opening film I Love You, Man. Universal Pictures is aiming for principle photography to start this summer so the film can debut next year. Even though I loved Meet the Parents, I was a bit let down by the sequel. It wasn’t that great in my opinion. With Little Fockers the children will be the focal point with both sets of grandparents in tow. That’s going to be a lot to take.
