New DVD Releases: Hot Tub Time Machine, Percy Jackson, The Crazies

A very nice assortment of movies on DVD this week, with a little something for everybody. If you like comedy, we have Hot Tub Time Machine If you like foreign films, try on Oscar nominee The White Ribbon. Kids movies your things? How about Percy Jackson and the Ridiculously Long Title? Or, if you could just use some scares, you can check out The Crazies.

See, something for everyone. And there’s even more than just those four flicks hitting shelves this week.

FEATURE FILMS

Hot Tub Time Machine

Quick. How much do you think this movie made? $100 million? $150 million? Touching $200 million?

Well, you’re a little off. This small comedy only managed to pull in $50 million at the box office. Not quite on the level of The Hangover. Not even close to the haul for I Love You Man. The question this raises is: How did this movie enter the zeitgeist.

Seriously, this may be the most-referenced movie that nobody ever saw. Everywhere from “Sportscenter” to celeb-reality you hear people talking about “hopping in the Hot Tub Time Machine” or something of that nature when they want to turn back the clock.

And where does this come from? Certainly not from viewership. Instead, it’s born out of marketing. Commercial. The incessant publicity for this movie that leads people to reference it. This may be one of the first movies whose TV spots transcended the actual picture.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Not if you buy the DVD.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief

If you want to launch a kid’s franchise, it’s probably best to give it a title that doesn’t sound like the name of a 70s soul group.

Seriously. Look at that title. Now I know it’s the name of a kid’s book series, but doesn’t it just make you think of deep blue suits with glitter and really bad bow ties? Like you’re going to see a 90-minute version of “Rubberband Man” by The Spinners?

I think this goes to show that you can’t just pick any child’s book franchise and expect to be Harry Potter – sometimes you need to take a look at the title.

So when this DVD gets filed in stores. How many yay-hoo kids will mistakenly put it in the oldies music section?

Movie Releases: Valentine’s Day, The Wolfman, My Name is Khan

How much more obvious can you get than by having a movie called Valentine’s Day come out on Valentine’s weekend? The movie that stars every actor you can possibly think of, from A-list talents such as Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway to Grey Anatomy Dr’s Eric Dane and Patrick Dempsey to the two Jessica’s (Alba and Biel). The star power alone will make the movie number one this week; it doesn’t really matter what the storyline is. But the biggest star of the movie is the film’s director, Gary Marshall, the man can do no wrong.

If you are like me and avoiding anything lovey-dovey this weekend, you should check out Joe Johnston’s film, The Wolfman starring Anthony Hopkins, Benicio del Toro and Emily Blunt. This horror/thriller follows a man as he ends up hunting a werewolf while looking for his missing brother.

Although the selection this week is not big, the quality and diversity is good. Check out more info on the films coming out this week including reviews and showtimes after the jump…

Earlier today we learned that Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief star Logan Lerman might be up for the role of Peter Parker in the next Spider-Man, but until that news is confirmed we have some photos from his most recent project. We’ve got six high quality production stills taken directly from the film that feature Percy, Grover, Annabeth, and even Medusa.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is based on the book series of the same name by author, Rick Riordan. The story centered a 12-year-old boy (a teenager in the film) who sets out on a quest in present-day America to rescue his mother, return Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt and prevent a civil war from erupting among the gods.

The movie has an all star cast of gods and goddesses including a trio of godly brothers with Sean Bean as Zeus, Kevin McKidd as Poseidon, and Steve Coogan as Hades. On the lady’s front, Uma Thurman stars as Medusa, Rosario Dawson as Persephone, and Melina Kanakardes as Athena.

The following photos give us a peek at the main characters in action as they battle the elements and the gods to find Zeus’ lighting bolt. If you look closely in the Medusa photo, you’ll notice that she’s become entranced by her own reflection in Percy’s iPhone.

Percy Jackson and The Olympians Character Banners

Several character banners have been released for the upcoming fantasy film, Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The film will hit theaters next month on February 12, 2010. Many of you are fans of the books and are anticipating the release of the first film, so without further ado check out the latest posters of Percy and his sidekicks Annabeth and Grover…

The film centers on Poseidon’s son, a 12-year-old boy, who sets out on a quest in present-day America to rescue his mother, return Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt and prevent a civil war from erupting among the gods. As you can see, the actor in the lead role isn’t that young, so it’s safe to assume that he’s more along the 16 or 17 mark. Also the hair color and race of a few characters have been changed for cinematic purposes.

There are a lot of readers who have been commenting on the various differences between the movie and the book. But you have to admit that these posters look pretty bad ass. They remind me of the Harry Potter promos with the dark blue tone, and coincidentally the film is actually produced by the same people who worked on Potter, so some similarities should be expected.

An international poster has just been released for Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. We got such an overwhelming response from fans regarding the extended trailer a couple weeks ago, that we had to follow up. The latest poster features Percy summoning the powers of his father in what looks like a climactic scene from the film.

The film centers on Poseidon’s son, a 12-year-old boy, who sets out on a quest in present-day America to rescue his mother, return Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt and prevent a civil war from erupting among the gods. As you can see, the actor in the lead role is not a 12 year old, so it’s safe to assume that they age him a bit in the movie. Also, we’ve heard from many of our readers that the character Annabeth is supposed to be blonde not brunette, which is true. Keep your concerns coming!

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief will be directed by Chris Columbus and stars Logan Lerman as the title character. The film is scheduled for a domestic release on February 12, 2010, which means that it will be knocking on Valentine’s Day weekend. How many of you are going to be all over that?

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Extended Trailer

An new extended trailer has been released for the upcoming film, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. It starts off fairly similar to the previous one, but unlike its predecessor we actually get to see more of the gods! Sean Bean makes an appearance as Zeus, and Kevin McKidd shows up as Poseidon the god of the sea and Percy’s father.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians will be following in the footsteps of the Harry Potter franchise in more ways than one. The film is also based on a series of books that center on a young boy and his friends as they encounter mystical elements on their multiple journeys. Percy is a half human, half god who uncovers his powers with the help of several unlikely allies, and the biggest coincidence of all is that The Lightning Thief is produced by the same people who adapted Potter.

In the new trailer they finally show Percy interacting with the gods and his human mother, as played by Catherine Keener. As a fan of Greek mythology, this film looks like it’s going to be an entertaining adaptation of their history. When watching the video look out for a half horse, half human Pierce Brosnan, and Uma Thurman as the sneaky Medusa.

An international trailer has just been released by 20th Century Fox for Percy Jackson and The Olypmians: The Lightning Thief. The film is based on one of the many stories in the popular Percy Jackson book series written by Rick Riordan. The latest trailer looks a little better than the previous two, but we’ll let you be the judge of that.

As compared the the previous trailer releases the international version has a one up because they actually show one of the gods we care about. Medusa finally makes an appearance in all her snake headed glory as portrayed by Uma Thurman. Besides her we’ve only seen Rosario Dawson who stars as Persephone, but we want more! This movie is filled with larger than life mythological characters but they won’t show them. Maybe they want a grand reveal in the film or the final trailer, their logic at this point is unclear.

The nerd in me will not let the upcoming fantasy film, Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief go. As a fan of Greek and Roman mythology the movie has become one to watch for me. A new poster has been released in promotion of the film, and it’s a lot less muted than the previous one sheet. This one actually shows some action, or should I say someone getting ready for some action?

A poster has been released for the upcoming epic, Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief. A while ago we brought you the theatrical trailer for the film, which did a much better job of intriguing us than the teaser the studio previously released. The poster is subtle, but still manages to make s strong statement about the film.

Don’t take my word for it, see for yourself…

I wasn’t aware that Presidents Day had become a marker for a blockbuster weekend. They might as well put the regular date, because I don’t know that many people who go around checking for what hits theaters on Presidents Day. Other than that, the poster works.

New Percy and The Olympians Trailer

A while back we brought you a small teaser trailer for the upcoming fantasy adaptation of Percy and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The new trailer makes its debut on the recently released X-Men Origins: Wolverine DVD, which hit shelves this past Tuesday.

The film centers on “Poseidon’s son, a 12-year-old boy, who sets out on a quest in present-day America to rescue his mother, return Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt and prevent a civil war from erupting among the gods.” The film is brought to you from the people behind Harry Potter so get ready for some phantasmic fun.

Obviously from the trailer, Percy is not portrayed by a 12 year old boy. Despite that error, the rest of the cast is what makes me interested in seeing this film. The gods alone are an impressive bunch. The trio of godly brothers will feature Sean Bean as Zeus, Kevin McKidd as Poseidon, and Steve Coogan as Hades. On the lady’s front, Uma Thurman as Medusa, Rosario Dawson as Persephone, and Melina Kanakardes as Athena.

As long as it doesn’t come off as ridiculously campy, I’m willing to give this movie a chance. I love Greek mythology so it has an automatic in with me.

A teaser trailer has been released for the upcoming family film, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The film’s directed by Chris Columbus and stars Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Kevin McKidd, Catherine Keener, Rosario Dawson and Steve Coogan.

According to Coming Soon, the film centers on “Poseidon’s son, a 12-year-old boy,who sets out on a quest in present-day America to rescue his mother, return Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt and prevent a civil war from erupting among the gods.”

Percy Jackson is set for release on February 12, 2010. I’m a sucker for anything that uses Greek mythology as a backdrop so I might actually give this film a shot.
