Woody Allen’s ‘To Rome With Love’ Gets Trailered

It would be interesting if Woody Allen‘s To Rome With Love was his capper to a foreign city trilogy. He recently made Vicky Christina Barcelona, and last year’s Midnight in Paris, so why not? Rome stars Allen, Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page, along with Oscar winner Roberto Benigni. The film opens June 22, and here’s the film’s trailer.

Some of this looks familiar, as Cruz is playing the daffy hooker that’s been in a number of Allen’s works (most notably in Mighty Aphrodite, which won an Oscar for Mira Sorvino). That’s always been the problem with late-stage Allen: He’s a big recycler. But what’s great is the return of Judy Davis to Allen’s films, and Roberto Benigni. The latter got a bad rap after his Oscar win, but Life is Beautiful is a great movie that holds up, and Benigni is a comic master (if you doubt that, watch him in Jim Jarmusch’s Night on Earth or Down by Law).

Allen uses Baldwin very well in the trailer, and this looks funny, but many of Allen’s later comedies have felt antiquated and not all that hilarious. This is a peppy, energetic trailer, and after the commercial and critical success of Midnight in Paris, it’s good to have Woody slightly more in the spotlight. He’s got a great ensemble here, so let’s just hope it’s better than You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger or Whatever Works.

Alec Baldwin Set To Star In New Woody Allen Film, Jesse Eisenberg May Join Him

When he’s not busy declaring that he’s retiring, that he’s quitting 30 Rock, and that 30 Rock itself is going off the air before not retiring, not quitting 30 Rock, and 30 Rock staying on the air, Alec Baldwin still takes time off from his busy schedule to act here and there. His newest project? Woody Allen’s new film.

/Film has it that Baldwin has signed on to Allen’s next film, which is as-yet untitled. Little is known about the project, beyond the fact that it will be set in Rome. Baldwin and Allen last worked together in the 1990 film Alice, which was a loose reimagining of Federico Fellini’s 1965 film, Juliet of the Spirits.

Rumor has it that The Social Network’s Jesse Eisenberg might be joining the cast, which makes sense—Eisenberg’s twitchy and nervous onscreen persona seems to perfectly align with the nervous and anxiety-ridden protagonists of Allen’s films, which are often stand-ins for Allen himself.

So there you go—based on this news, expect Alec Baldwin to declare that he will never, ever work with Woody Allen ever again, will never work on Woody Allen’s new film, and will never work with Jesse Eisenberg, ever.

Penélope Cruz To Receive Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame Today

Penélope Cruz has a lot to be thankful for these days, in addition to getting hitched last year to Javier Bardem, having a baby boy in January, and starring in the upcoming Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides, the Oscar-winning actress is scoring a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today.

DimeWars has it that Cruz will be awarded the star today in front of the El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. Cruz’s star will be the 2,436^th star presented to an entertainer (I guess mine was lost in the mail or something—gotta check with the post office about that one).

Director Rob Marshall will present the award to Cruz, as “The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will recognize Penelope for being the first Spanish actress to win an Academy Award.”

That’s really great and all, but seriously, when are they going to start recognizing bloggers with these things? I mean, I entertain people with my daily witticisms and such (seriously, I do! Mom emails me every day to tell me what a great job her little writer does every day, and that if the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce can’t recognize that, well, then they’re just jealous and not really my friends). So come on, Hollywood!

New Pirates 4 Trailer promises Mermaids and Johnny Depp

So, there’s a new Pirates of the Caribbean film due May 20, and that’s now less than two months away. For the fourth film (subtitled On Stranger Tides), they’ve ditched Orlando Bloom (nicknamed by Paul Schnieder “Orblando Gloom”), Keira Knightley, and trilogy director Gore Verbinski, and added director Rob Marshall, and stars Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane to the Johnny Depp show. The new trailer follows…

Well, it’s got the Hans Zimmer music and Depp making double entendres, so it looks and sounds a lot like the first three. And there’s no denying the addition of the mighty Ian McShane as Blackbeard is inspired, while having series stalwart Geoffrey Rush back gives this film some interest.Perhaps new blood, and a romantic interest for Depp will be enough of a change of pace to make this better than the last two Pirates films.

That said, the series never needed to be a franchise. The first three films were all bloated, and though the first film was fun, the gimmick of Depp’s drunken, rock star pirate has grown tiring. If this looked to be a stripped down adventure story with a more straight-ahead narrative, it might be fun to go back to this well, but the film comes across more as a cynical act of running something people like into the ground. If the first two Pirates sequels didn’t have the same kick of the original they at least had scale, and this film looks to be the budget version of this franchise. But even with a weak domestic total (and for this franchise that’s still doing $200 million), the film will surely make money through international – this is as safe a sequel as they come. The question is if it makes enough for a fifth. If so, let’s hope this one is at least entertaining.

Over the past few years, Walt Disney Pictures has been teaming up with celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz to recreate some of their most iconic characters. They get Hollywood’s hottest stars and place them in scenarios from classic Disney films. Some of the previous photos they’ve done included Rachel Weisz as Snow White, Beyonce as Alice in Wonderland, and Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony as Princess Jasmine and Aladdin.

This latest batch features Tron Legacy stars Jeff Bridges and Olivia Wilde, Penelope Cruz, Alec Baldwin, and Queen Latifah. Take a look…

Oddly enough, Olivia Wilde’s bone structure really lends itself to the Evil Queen. She looks like she was taken straight from a film. The make up artists and costume designers did a great job on her. As for Beauty in the Beast, we thought they’d have Bridges in make up to play the Prince in monster form but this will work. He does have the flowing hair to play the part. Cruz on the other hand, doesn’t look like Belle. Her hair is too tousled. It should be tighter up top (picky we know).

We wouldn’t have even thought of Latifah as Ursula from The Little Mermaid, but she’s another perfect fit. The background is a bit cartoonish for the photo but it works!

When we think of the Pirates franchise, dangerous mermaids never come to mind. Who would have thought that Ariel and the rest of her friends could be so deadly? And what about all the zombies in this movie? It’s like “The Walking Dead” but on water.

Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) finds himself on an unexpected journey to the fabled Fountain of Youth when a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz) forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane).The film also stars Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane, Gemma Ward, Stephen Graham, Richard Griffiths, Kevin R. McNally, Sam Clafin, and Óscar Jaenada.

Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides is directed by Rob Marshall and scheduled to hit theaters on May 20, 2011.

Disney has released the first official photos from their upcoming sequel Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides and they’ve given first dibs to USA Today. The magazine also spoke to co-writer Terry Rossio about what we can expect from Captain Jack Sparrow this fourth time around. Read what he had to say and get your first look at Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz in the film…

The one thing everyone seems to be questioning is the placement of On Stranger Tides in regards to the previous trilogy.

According to Rossio, “It’s a completely different beast, the three previous films are a trilogy, with an intricate, interwoven tapestry of characters. I would call this a stand-alone type of story.”

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, what can we expect from the new characters, specifically Cruz’s Angelica?

“Jack has perhaps not only met his equal, but also found that she is a kindred spirit who is a con artist at heart as well. She’s not only a romantic interest, but an equal and effective adversary.”

First Photos: Penelope Cruz in Pirates of The Caribbean

Some new spy photos from the set of Rob Marshall’s Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides have surfaced! They come from Radar Online, and they feature Penelope Cruz’s character Angelica and we have to be honest, she doesn’t look as dainty as we thought she would. Check out more on set photos below…

It’s hard to describe her costume in Pirates without coming across as a bit harsh. Cruz is a beautiful woman but this outfit doesn’t do her justice. Maybe her character is supposed to be “one of the guys”, which could account for her rough look. She is playing the daughter of the famous Blackbeard The Pirate so it would make sense.

Other cast members who pop up in these photos include Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, (we knew he wouldn’t be too far behind) and Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides is currently filming in Hawaii and co-stars, Ian McShane, Kevin R. McNally, Sam Clafin, and a slew of other new faces.

The film is scheduled to hit theaters next summer on May 20, 2011.

Penelope Cruz Will Play Sparrow’s Love Interest in Pirates 4

We heard back in February that Penelope Cruz would be joining Johnny Depp, the remaining cast member of the Pirates franchise for the fourth installment of the series entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides but we weren’t sure what she was cast as. Thanks to an interview with MTV the captain of the billion dollar series, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, explained that Penelope will portray the feisty, Spanish daughter of evil pirate Blackbeard. At some point in the movie she with Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow and apparently some sparks fly.

Bruckheimer stated:

“She brings a lot of humor to it. And the fact that she’s so feisty… a little romance between Captain Jack and the character that Penelope plays.”

Cruz has been making some great choices lately. Although I didn’t love the musical Nine, there was something so open about her performance. She’s always been good but lately it seems like she’s reached a new level in her acting, she’s free and unpredictable and completely fascinating to watch. There’s no doubt she can handle a film like this ,and her and Depp had great chemistry back in Blow so it will be great to see them on screen again (wish it was in something more like Blow, but hey, you can’t win them all!)

Ian McShane will be playing Sparrow’s nemesis Blackbeard, who is apparently “the nastiest pirate ever” according to Bruckheimer (sell that villain!). He also confirmed that the rumor that Geoffrey Rush, who has played Barbossa in first three films will in fact be coming on board for the fourth film (I wonder how much he’s making? Any guesses??).

Filming is supposed to start in June so we have plenty of time for more casting news. I’m guessing that with all the star power in the film, Bruckheimer will cast a few up and comers like he did with Keira Knightley back in the day. The man likes to show that he can take a new face and make it famous (I wonder if he gets their first born?)

Of course, Bruckheimer has once again promised a fresh approach to the film…

“We’re going to take a whole new direction,” he said.

Somehow I don’t doubt it. I just pray it’s under two hours this time and isn’t filled with too many characters…

Penelope Cruz Cast in Pirates of The Caribbean?

Oscar winning actress Penelope Cruz may have signed on to co-star in Disney’s upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. With the exception of Johnny Depp this would be a major casting coup for the series that’s been on shaky ground for the past few months. THR recently posted the story and then magically pulled it from their site, but before they did we managed to get some info on Cruz’s involvement.

It’s already noted that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will be directed by Rob Marshall, who coincidentally worked with Cruz on last year’s Nine. It was a film that earned the actress another Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, a category she won last year. As for her stint opposite Jack Sparrow, the story has disappeared off the site, so we don’t have any specifics as to who she will play. From the little bit of info that was present her role was unspecified, which falls in line with everything else about his film.

We do know that Cruz’s character will be “Sparrow’s foil and equal in many ways,” a description that has me interested in their onscreen reunion. Don’t forget they previously worked together back in 2001 on the drug drama, Blow. There’s not a lot known about the plot of the fourth Pirates except that it may have something to do with Jack finding the Fountain of Youth.

Review: Broken Embraces

Synposis:

The story is about a man who “writes, lives, and loves in darkness.” Fourteen years before the movie starts, he was in a brutal car accident that left him blind and without his muse (and love of his life), Lena. This man possesses a double identity: Harry Caine, the pseudonym with which he signs all of his literary works, and Mateao Blanco, his real name, with which he lives and signs the films he directs. After the accident, he reduces himself wholly to Harry Caine. Currently working as a blind writer, Harry Caine is assisted by his production manager and long time friend, Judit Garcia, and her son, Diego. Diego has an accident when Judit is out of town, Harry elects to take care of him – with all the downtime, Diego asks Harry about his former life as Mateo Blanco. Mateo reveals his past, specifically his experiences filming “Girls and Suticases,” and the vicious love triangle that evolved between himself, Lena, and the film’s producer, Ernesto.

The Good:

“Making Of” – While Lena and Mateo film “Girls and Suitcases,” Ernesto hires his son to shoot the “making of,” so he can spy on their on-set relationship. It serves as a parallel narrative to the primary story, but also as uncensored insight into the “reality” of Lena and Mateo’s “collaborative” relationship. It was an inventive excuse for Almodovar to subtly exceed his dramatic quota.
Noir - The film has all the ingredients of classic “noir,” while still maintaining its contemporary flare. And, for a large fraction of the film Lena has all the attributes of the “femme fatale” – dark, ambitious beauty, a humble past but the confidence and inclination to take risks, etc. Juicy.
Relationships - There is a massive amount of character-overlapping in this piece, and the fabulous complications only further enrich Almodovar’s plot-line. As the story unfolds, each character delivers a scandalous contribution to the chaos.
Commentary on Filmmaking: I’m going to go ahead and clock in as the ardent film journalist and admit, without shame, that I dig movies ABOUT filmmaking. Yes, potential overkill. But in the case of Broken Embraces, it only strengthens Almodovar’s theme. He really dramatizes the importance of editing – specifically the relationship between editor and director. Who’s the REAL story teller? And how easily can a swap of a “take” re-shape an entire story?

The Bad:

Length: I reluctantly admit the film is a little long. Did it sway my opinion of the movie even remotely? No. So don’t invest too much thought in this bullet point.

Overall:

It’s hard to believe that Pedro Almodovar can top Volver – alas, Broken Embraces trumps with flying colors. It’s a fiercely engaging story, well acted, and beautifully directed. You would be a FOOL to miss this. I smell a Best Foreign Film Nod.
