Some context: The Master, Paul Thomas Anderson’s long awaiting follow-up to 2007’s There Will Be Blood, has been passed from studio to studio since 2009, for varying reasons that range from budgetary issues to the fact that the film is supposedly a thinly-veiled and scathing critique of Scientology.  Regardless of the reasoning, PTA finally got The Master made with a distribution deal from The Weinstein Company, and is offering up a peek at the very mysterious new film via a hypnotic teaser trailer.

The Master concerns a charismatic writer (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who launches a religious organization in the aftermath of World War II.  Joaquin Phoenix stars as a drifter that becomes Hoffman’s Number Two, but who begins to develop doubts about his new mentor and belief system.

So…one might see how The Master may be seen as a jab at Scientology.   That said, putting whatever controversy is attached to the film aside, the teaser for The Master is a hypnotic marriage of the soundtrack by Radiohead’s Johnny Greenwood (who also composed the riveting score to There Will Be Blood) and an interrogation of Phoenix.  It doesn’t tell us much about the film’s plot, but it does give us a taste of the unnerving and off-kilter tone of The Master.

The Master is set for an October 12, 2012 release date.

Time for another round-up of this week’s entertainment bits and pieces. The official logo for Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel hit the web; The Weinstein Company finally gave Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master a release date; and the trailer for Safety Not Guaranteed is out. All that and more below.

• Reasons You Should Be Watching Shameless: If you’re not watching Shameless, shame on you. Unreality Magazine wants you to jump on board, and they’ve got 5 good reasons why you should be watching, all mainly having to do with the amazing cast.
  
• From Board Game To Movie: With Battleship opening soon, Unreality Magazine decided to post a list of ’5 Board Games That Will Probably Become Movies’. This is, of course, a ridiculous concept because the idea is so uninspired and unoriginal. The list includes games Don’t Wake Daddy, Settlers of Catan (which I can actually picture being a huge blockbuster movie), and Hungry Hungry Hippos. They’ve even outlined a plot and lined-up a cast for each.
  
• Release Date For The Master: Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming film The Master has an official release date. According to /film, the movie will be released by The Weinstein Company on October 12th; the release will start out as limited but will eventually expand. Mark you calendars!
  
• Old Villains: Ever wonder what Michael Meyers will look like as an old man? Unreality Magazine posted a photo gallery by Federico Chiesa that imagines what movie bad guys like Freddy, Jason and the Shining Twins do when they’re too old to scare people anymore. It’s worth checking out.

• Man Of Steel Logo: The official logo for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel has been revealed. It’s got a dark look to it, with the famous ‘S’ appearing to be on fire.
  
• 8-Bit Movie Posters: The Curious Brain posted some cool 8-bit posters by Eric Palmer. There’s a wide variety of poster choices including V For Vendetta, 300, The Dark Knight, and Jurassic Park.

• Safety Not Guaranteed Trailer: Aubrey Plaza made a splash at Sundance this year in Safety Not Guaranteed, a movie about a magazine intern (Plaza) who starts a relationship with a guy (Mark Duplass) who puts an ad in a newspaper seeking a partner to time travel with. The movie was picked up by FilmDistrict and debuts June 8th. Here’s the trailer:

Director Paul Thomas Anderson plans on reuniting with frequent collaborator Philip Seymour Hoffman for his next project. According to BFDealDemo, Anderson will once again tackle the theme of religion in an untitled period piece for Universal.

Hoffman is known for playing supporting roles in several of Anderson’s films, but with this latest project he’ll star as the lead. His character will be called “The Master,” as in “master of ceremonies,” a charismatic intellectual who hatches a faith-based organization that begins to catch on in America in 1952.

The core is the relationship between The Master and Freddie, a twenty-something drifter who becomes the leader’s lieutenant. As the faith begins to gain a fervent following, Freddie finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor.

Anderson is known for his cynical approach when it comes to organized religion, which was apparent in There Will Be Blood. This time around he seems to be targeting more contemporary followings such as Scientology and Mormonism, which are newbies as compared to Christianity and Judaism.

The script for the film is yet to be completed and Universal refuses to green light the project until they see the final product. The studio is weary about producing an adult themed drama of this caliber, because they typically go on to become cult favorites as opposed to commercial successes.
