Pack Up For Wet Hot American Summer 2

If you could assemble a cast that includes Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Christopher Meloni, and Joe Lo Truglio, you’d have an A-list comedy on your hands these days, and that may be what you get if they make Wet Hot American Summer 2, the long-proposed sequel to 2000′s cult comedy. Co-writer and star of the original Michael Showalter said it’s definitely happening and everyone is on board.

Showalter said so on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live last night, and said so with great authority. This is after the recent live table reading of the original film’s script that took place at San Francisco’s Sketchfest. The cast for Wet Hot American Summer also included Janeane Garofolo, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Ian Black, A.D. Miles, Ken Marino, Molly Shannon, Judah Friedlander and Marguerite Moreau, many of whom were at the recent reading.

When Showalter offers no hesitations, it suggests that this has been in the works for a while, and that they have some form of financing. Director David Wain has a new film coming out shortly called Wanderlust (with Rudd), and if that does good business, surely WHAS 2 will be next on deck. The first film was barely released by the now-defunct USA Pictures, and found an audience on home video. It’s hilarious, and well worth checking out.

In the trailer for Wanderlust, Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston play a couple dealing with very real world problems. He gets laid off and the duo end up at a commune. As directed by David Wain (who also did Role Models and cult favorite Wet Hot American Summer), the film looks to offers laughs and lots of small roles from Wain’s old comedy troupe The State. Check out the trailer…

In trailer you can spot State-vets Ken Marino, Kerri Kinney, and Joe Lo Truglio, along with Alan Alda, Justin Theroux and Malin Akerman. Most of these people seem to be a part of the same universe, and often show up in each other’s movies, so that’s not really a surprise – though it’s interesting to see that Akerman has landed in comedy after Watchmen did little for her (or anyone’s) career.

The film comes out February 24, 2012, which never means much when it comes to comedy – they can play at any point in the year – and if it delivers as much as the trailer, it should be a nice small comedy success for the group. Wain’s career as a director didn’t really take off until Role Models proved he could work in the mainstream, so it was a long road after 2001′s Wet Hot American Summer, which is one of the funniest films of the last ten years, though was barely released in theaters.

Albert Brooks To Star In New Judd Apatow Film?

Yesterday, we reported that Megan Fox was set to bring her box office poison unique charm to the set of Judd Apatow’s new film, starring as a yet to be detailed character. Today, it seems, someone with actual comedic talent and chops a little more familiar to the comedy world is now in negotiations to join the cast—Albert Brooks.

According to /Film, the movie, which centers around Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann’s unhappily married couple from Knocked Up, is set for release on June 1, 2012. Brooks, like Fox, would be playing an as yet undetermined role—but, considering this is an Apatow film, I’m guessing that he’ll play a mentor-like father to Rudd, who occasionally smokes pot but is still fairly grounded, and gives his wild, permanently-adolescent son the advice he needs to finally mature and be the man his wife deserves. I can’t swear to it, but since that seems to be the general Apatow model for films, I’m guessing it’s not far off, either. Either that or everyone will just give up and point the camera at Seth Rogan and just let him grumble and giggle for two hours straight (which, yeah, I’d probably pay to watch).

Video: Jason Segel and Paul Rudd Meet Rush

Do you remember the bromantic comedy I Love You, Man from a couple years ago? The film starred Paul Rudd and Jason Segel and it features a lot of too close for comfort moments between the heterosexual buddies. The film wasn’t a monster hit at the box office but it had some fans, enough to warrant a sequel…or a sort of sequel. Rudd and Segel have joined forces with veteran musicians Rush for I Love You, Man: The After Show. Check it out…

In the video, Rudd and Segel reprise their roles as Peter and Sydney from I Love You Man and if you remember correctly, the duo has an unhealthy obsession with the band. As a matter of fact, their little obsession is one of the main things that drew them to one another.

Here we see them getting a little too comfortable in Rush’s dressing room after a concert. Sydney got the pair some fake passes, but Peter is none the wiser. They’re eventually confronted by the band, who promptly ask them to leave. But before it’s all said and done, Peter get’s a special gift from one of the members.

This sketch doesn’t touch the surface of hilarity that’s present in I Love You Man. If you haven’t seen the movie, a lot of the second hand language will come off as mumbo jumbo to you. Watch the film first to get the full impact.

Sundance 2011: My Idiot Brother – Movie Review

There’s not other way of saying it, with My Idiot Brother mainstream Hollywood has officially hit the streets of Sundance. Despite the fact that I will see Paul Rudd (even when I’m supposed to be looking for the best unknown ____ who is soon to be amazing) in anything and enjoy the entire supporting cast, one can’t help but wonder what this film is doing at an Independent film festival — everything about it seems as mainstream as possible…

Sundance Synopsis:

Despite looking for the good in every situation and the best in every person, Ned always seems to find himself holding the short end of the stick—being conned into selling pot to a uniformed cop, being dumped by his girlfriend, and worse yet, losing custody of his beloved dog, Willie Nelson. When he turns to family, he is passed from sister to sister while he gets back on his feet. Ned’s best intentions produce hilariously disastrous results, bringing the family to the cusp of chaos and ultimately the brink of clarity.

Review:

Well, it’s fun! I think my biggest problem with this film is that it was in no way a Sundance film…

Did it have new faces? Nope, it only had recognizable faces — even the extras were A-listers (really! Just look… reallllly hard.)
Did it push any boundaries? Do Steve Coogan’s cock and balls constitute as a boundary? We’ve seen Jason Segel’s, Ken Jeoung’s, Ashton Kutcher’s were referred to a lot by Natalie Portman in No Strings Attached and Ewan McGregor’s has made appearances loads of times in comedies and the like — I think we need more than just apenis, or some incredible penis feat to really get a laugh and/pr push any boundaries.
Did it have a small budget? For a mainstream film maybe, but not in the “I sold my last shoe to buy the tape to get the final shot” — not so much (hough I don’t know if that’s a realistic Sundance category anymore). Once a studio buys it (which was already done by the Weinsteins before any of us had time to form an opinion) so much money will be pushed into it, it won’t matter if they made the whole thing for a tissue, it will still be a multi-million dollar film.
Did it have a new director? Nope! But not a well-established one, one that is definitely trying to make his mark — that’s something.
The Shots/Camera Work: We’ve got no interesting colors, odd angles, wide ranges, extreme close-ups or anything to really differentiate this film from any other pretty and cleanly shot rom-com in theaters.
Did it embody the spirit of Independent film (whatever that means)? It’s as mainstream as all the other comedies in theaters, it was just took the Sundance route to get some buzz and possibly because John Cooper wanted Paul Rudd there (I have no idea if that’s true, but it might be!)

That all being said. It’s funny for a mainstream comedy, has a few very clever moments, is predictable but a fun ride none-the-less. Plus, check out how hairless Coogan is! Did he just get everything he could waxed before the shoot?

Judd Apatow Reunites Rudd and Mann for Knocked Up Spin-Off

Judd Apatow is gearing up for his next directorial project following 2009′s Funny People. According to reports, he plans to reunite his Knocked Up co-stars Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann for a spin-off that features their characters Pete and Debbie. Previously, it was thought to be either a prequel or a sequel but it’s neither.

In Knocked Up, Mann played the older sister of Katherine Heigl’s pregnant character. She had two children (played by her real life daughters with Apatow) and was married to Rudd’s character Pete. Throughout the majority of the movie their relationship is strained and they deal with issues of trust, communication, and responsibility in a way that only Apatow could write it.

Apatow will once again pen this script, which will feature an original story surrounding the characters. The film is expected to hit theaters on June 1, 2012.

To be completely honest, we’re not sure how we feel about Apatow doing spin-offs. With the exception of Funny People, we loved his previous scripts for The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up as solo and original efforts. He typically uses the same actors in his films, so why not use them again but create new characters?

How Do You Know: Movie Review

Kindly ignore the deceptive array of billboards posted around Los Angeles presenting quotes like “Reese Witherspoon At Her BEST!” and “Funniest Film Of The Holiday Season!” Writer/director James L. Brooks teams up with the usually charming Reese Witherspoon along with Jack Nicholson, Owen Wilson, and Paul Rudd for one of poorest displays of cinema I’ve seen since I Love You, Philliip Morris. Be sure to dodge How Do You Know at all costs – it opens in theaters this weekend…

The Players:

Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Jack Nicholson, Owen Wilson

The Plot:

Lisa (Witherspoon) gets cut from her pro softball team. Bummer. Later that afternoon she accepts an invitation for a blind date with George (Rudd), who is having an equally tragic day, given that he may or may not be headed to jail for a financial crime. Lisa’s convinced the date was an epic bore while George is convinced she’s the woman of his dreams. Lisa decides it’d be far more fun to date pro baseball player, Matty (Wilson), who has the I.Q. of a lemon. Is George willing to fight for love? You’ll sure find out!

The Bad:

Structure: Whomever is responsible for green-lighting this project should be hiding under a rock in the Philippines. The central issue, which ultimately sprouts many, is the film’s structure. Brooks attempts to pull the randomly correlated story-line bit (which has proven successful for several rom-com’s like Love Actually, He’s Just Not That Into You, etc) and fails.
Reese Witherspoon: If it were possible for the Academy to revoke awards, Ms. Witherspoon would be walking on thin ice. This is by far the worst performance of her career. Presumably aware that her 5’5, petite blonde swag doesn’t exactly line up with that of a softball star, Witherspoon made astronomical efforts to drop her voice four octaves and walk/slouch/gesticulate like a “dude.” Her performance was also strikingly devoid of comedic timing – a rarity for Witherspoon
Characters: There is nothing particularly appealing or relatable about the four featured characters, which leaves the audience detached from/uninterested in their respective stories.
Jack Nicholson: Had no part in this film.

The Good:

Owen Wilson: Never, ever fails to humor an audience. His character was both a womanizer and imbecile – and I loved every minute of it. Thank you, sir, for contributing the only redeeming aspect of this film.

Overall:

Do not see this film.

Rating: 1/10

The film opens nationwide December 17.

Paul Rudd NOT Reuniting with Jason Segel in The Muppets

Back in November it was reported that Paul Rudd would be joining the cast of the new Muppets movie. The film stars Jason Segel who also co-wrote the screenplay with his Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller. We thought this was going to be a full on reunion between Stoller, Segel, and Rudd, but unfortunately it’s not happening. Rudd recently spoke with MTV and cleared the air about his “supposed” involvement.

Rudd: I wish that I was [in it]. It’s all rumor… I wanted to be in it, and I talked to Jason, but I think there was some things that happened and I don’t know if I’m gonna get to do it.

Damn! That would have been epic. First Jane Lynch says that she’s not in the film and now this. What could be so important that it could keep Rudd, Segel and a group of puppets from performing beautiful comedy together?

The actor was rumored to be one of the many cameo appearances in the film that currently includes Lady Gaga, Zach Galifianakis, Donald Glover, Danny Trejo, Eric Stonestreet, John Krasinski, Ed Helms, Alan Arkin, Billy Crystal, and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

The Muppets will open in theaters on December 25, 2011.

Robert De Niro, Paul Rudd Host Saturday Night Live in December

Live from New York, it’s a two-time Oscar winner, and a guy with the bluest eyes you’ve ever seen! Robert De Niro and Paul Rudd have been tapped to host episodes of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” Both actors have already appeared on the show in the past, do you remember De Niro’s cat-lady skit? What about Rudd playing the sleazy music video director behind Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” parody? Hopefully these two can add some much needed life to the lackluster series.

According to EW, De Niro will take to the SNL stage on December 4 in promotion of his latest installment in the Meet the Parents franchise, Little Fockers. He’ll be joined by musical guest Sean “Diddy’ Combs and his group Dirty Money. This will mark De Niro’s third appearance on the show.

Next, Rudd will host on December 18 to promote his new film, a romantic comedy called How Do You Know. He’ll be joined by the tunes of the legendary Paul McCartney. Shut the front door! SNL has picked a musical guest who isn’t a pop princess or an androgynous looking boy toy? We’re in shock!

Jack Black, Paul Rudd, Ed Helms, Lady Gaga Join Muppets Movie

We didn’t really need another reason to check out Jason Segel’s upcoming film The Muppets, but this latest casting announcement has piqued our interest. According to several sources, a total of 9 new people have been added to the film’s roster including our personal favorite Paul Rudd along with Jack Black, Ed Helms, and even Lady Gaga! Find out who else is joining the party below…

“Glee” star Jane Lynch has joined the cast along with “Community’s” Donald Glover, and Machete’s Danny Trejo. Lynch will play a a prison guard and Trejo will play her prisoner, while Glover’s role has been left unspecified. Are we the only ones slightly disappointed that Trejo is playing a convict — again? On another note, we’re happy to see Glover get more big screen work. He’s the funniest actor on “Community” and that’s really saying something because that show is hi-lar-i-ous!

Next, there’s Black and Rudd, whose roles haven’t been revealed but “The Office’s” John Krasinki and Ed Helms have! The duo along with “Modern Family’s” Eric Stonestreet will play members of Lady Gaga’s entourage. If that wasn’t enough Zach Galifianakis has also been cast in the role of “Hobo Jo.” We don’t even need to know anything besides his name do we? We’re already there!

The line up for this film is sweeter than anything we could have ever imagined. All of these actors will join the current roster, which includes Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, and Rashida Jones. The Muppets is scheduled to hit theaters on December 25, 2011.

Not sure whatever happened to “you know when you know” apparently for busy New Yorkers that’s just know good enough! They need to know the reason why things work out the way they do with love! Good thing we have a film to explain just that! The first trailer for James L. Brooks latest holiday-romantic-comedy How Do You Know starring Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon (the Holiday box office queen), Owen Wilson with none other than Jack Nicholson as a supportive dad (not his usual smart-ass self) has just his the web.

Though I’m not one for the rom-com genre, Paul Rudd can make just about anything watchable and the rest of the cast isn’t half-bad either. Who knows, maybe this will surprise the non-romantic-film-goers! It’s almost guaranteed to do well seeing as it’s jam-packed with A-listers and a story about love right before Christmas. Damn the Holiday spirit which makes everyone need to believe in love!

Official Synopsis:

Feeling a bit past her prime at 27, former athlete Lisa Jorgenson finds herself in the middle of a love triangle, as a corporate guy in crisis competes with Lisa’s current, baseball-playing beau.

The film will be released on December 17th 2010.

Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon Reunite in How Do You Know Trailer

A lot of you might not remember a little film called Overnight Delivery that came out in 1998. It was kind of like Road Trip, and it was one of those movies that you either hated or loved. But there were two universally good things that came out of it: Paul Rudd and Reese Witherspoon. They had awesome chemistry together and we’ll get to see that connection again with their new film, How Do You Know. The first trailer has been released on Yahoo Movies and we’ve got it for you below…

How Do You Know is obviously another romantic comedy to throw on the fire but it features several elements that we like: Rudd, Witherspoon, and Jack Nicholson. It was also written and directed by Oscar winner James L. Brooks, who has more than a decent track record (As Good as it Gets, Terms of Endearment) with these types of films.

The story centers on two men who are both in love with the same woman. One is a baseball player (Owen Wilson) and the other is a white collar, straight-laced business man. They both have unconventional ways of expressing their feelings but then again she’s an unconventional woman. She’s lost in love limbo and doesn’t know what to do.

How Do You Know is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17th, which is kind of unfortunate considering that’s the same day Tron Legacy opens. Depending on what you’re into this could still have a solid debut. There are different strokes for different folks.
