Paul Greengrass to Direct Fantastic Voyage

Shaky-cam connoisseur Paul Greengrass has a new gig to follow his here today gone tomorrow Iraq war film, Green Zone. The movie didn’t fair that well at the box office when it opened a few weeks ago, so the director is ready to shift creative gears. According to THR, he’s in talks to direct the big screen remake of the 1966 film, Fantastic Voyage.

Fantastic Voyage has been in development hell over at 20th Century Fox for what seems like ages, but the studio has managed to grab Greengrass’ attention and he’s currently in negotiations to direct. The sci-fi thriller will be produced by James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment and feature plenty of updated special effects to make it attractive to today’s audiences.

The original film centered on a crew of “scientists who are shrunk to atomic size and sent on a miniature submarine to save the life of a defecting Soviet scientist.” The remake will stick closely to the original story with the exception of the Cold War era innuendo. We’re also hearing that it, like 5 other films I’ve written about today, will be produced in 3D.

Fantastic Voyage has had a slew of directors show interest in it including Roland Emmerich and Tarsem Singh, but no one committed. I’m down for seeing Greengrass do something new, but something tells me he won’t be able to keep the camera stationary in a scene for more than 10 seconds.

6 New Green Zone Clips – Get Your Game Face On

We just got six new clips for Paul Greengrass’ film, Green Zone starring Matt Damon as a slightly more realistic version of his Jason Bourne character… but not that much more realistic. Once again he’s a military agent with the special ability to out smart the people he works for and kick their asses when necessary. Luckily these clips do show that there is a bit of difference between Green Zone and the Bourne series. For one, Damon’s character Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller feels a bit more “all-American” than Jason Bourne and he says things like “get your game face on.”

Overall, this could be a fun ride or it could be another run-of-the-mill war films. It’s unclear how intelligent the actual plot line is and if this is something that Greengrass and Damon were passionate about doing, or if it’s just a big, shoot um up payday. Hopefully it’s not the latter.

The film co-stars Greg Kinnear, Amy Ryan, Brendan Gleeson, Khalid Abdalla and Jason Isaacs all of which you can see in the clips below. The film’s story takes place during the U.S.-led occupation of Baghdad in 2003, where Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon) and his team of Army inspectors were dispatched to find weapons of mass destruction believed to be stockpiled in the Iraqi desert.

Paul Greengrass Confirms Bourne 4 Exit

Yesterday we told you about Paul Greengrass‘ rumored exit from the Jason Bourne franchise and now there’s official word that it’s true. The director released a statement today regarding his decision to leave the project, which will put a serious damper on Universal’s plans for Bourne 4. Where does this leave the franchise?

See what he had to say below…

“You won’t find a more devoted supporter of the Bourne franchise than me. I will always be grateful to have been the caretaker to Jason Bourne over the course of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. I’m very proud of those films and feel they express everything I most passionately believe about the possibility of making quality movies in the mainstream. My decision to not return a third time as director is simply about feeling the call for a different challenge. There’s been no disagreement with Universal Pictures. The opportunity to work with the Bourne family again is a difficult thing to pass up, but we have discussed this together and they have been incredibly understanding and supportive. I’ve been lucky enough to have made four films for Universal, and our relationship continues. Jason Bourne existed before me and will continue, and I hope to remain involved in some capacity as the series moves on.”

This entire statement sounds a bit suspect, because Greengrass seemed to love working on the films so his decision to leave comes out of left field. The major issue here was probably creative differences, which happens all the time. It’s great that he mentions that the franchise was established before him and will continue to go on after his exit. Once again, Doug Liman directed the first Bourne film, so what’s he up to? Greengrass is talented but he shouldn’t be the be all, end all.

Sad news has come our way in the form of Paul Greengrass and his involvement with the fourth Bourne film. For the most part we’ve been told that the next installment was going according to plan with Greengrass, Matt Damon, and several new writers on board. All of a sudden we get the shocking news that the director has decided to quit the film according to The Playlist.

Close sources and friends near the Bourne project are saying that Paul Greengrass walked away over a week ago but they wanted to make sure all their info was accurate before going public. The film has been going through a long development process, which most fans chalked up as a good thing. No one wanted it to be rushed with an underdeveloped story.

Speaking of the story, two screenwriters were on board for the film, one being George Nolfi, who did The Bourne Ultimatum and Josh Zetumer who was brought on to write a parallel script to Nolfi’s. Universal did all of this while Greengrass was toiling away on the set of his latest film, Green Zone so he was none the wiser. Word on the street is that Damon is religiously loyal to Paul, so there’s no way he would do another Bourne film without him behind the camera.

Here’s a good question in the midst of all this drama, what does Damon’s contract say? Does he have the option to jump ship if he doesn’t have director approval? If not he’s not going anywhere, and if he leaves there’s something called a breach of contract that I’m sure he doesn’t want to mess with. Also, whatever happened to Doug Liman? The Bourne Identity was awesome and it’s what kicked off this series, is he no longer available?

Green Zone First Trailer and Photos

Maybe I missed something, but this is the first I’ve heard of Green Zone. Matt Damon has teamed up again with Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass in an action packed war thriller, about “a rogue U.S. Army officer who must hunt through covert and faulty intelligence hidden on foreign soil before war escalates in an unstable region.” The film has a strong supporting cast including Greg Kinnear, Brendan Gleeson, Amy Ryan, Khalid Abdalla and Jason Isaacs.

You would have thought that we would have heard more about this by now. Oh well! It’s here now with a bang. Check out the first action packed trailer and some stills from the film below…

Anyone else feel like they just watched a trailer for another Bourne film with a new twist? Luckily Bourne is a great series and Matt Damon is once of the easiest men in the world to watch on screen so the film definitely has some potential.

It will be interesting to see if this is a straight out action film or a war film with some purpose behind it. This trailer makes it look action-flick, but there is an opportunity for some depth. Damon is one to support a political cause so it’s easy to see why he might get behind a war-thriller. Then again, he’s done a number of flat out shoot um up films, so it might just be that. Where will this one fall? It’s hard to tell just yet.

Bourne 4 Gets A Screenwriter

The fourth installment of the Jason Bourne franchise just got a new writer. According to THR, Universal has hired some fresh meat to pen the next sequel in the popular series. As you may know, Matt Damon will be making his return as the title character, whom he last played in 2007′s The Bourne Ultimatum. More on the film below.

Originally George Nolfi, who worked on Ultimatum returned to pen the fourth script. He also boarded to write and direct The Adjustment Bureau, an adaptation of a Philip K. Dick short story that reteams him with Damon. Unfortunately, he had to jump ship on Bourne due to scheduling difficulties with Bureau. The film will be starting production next month, and he wouldn’t have been able to handle the workload of both.

Universal is adamant about Bourne making it’s 2011 release, so they’ve opted to go with a new writer named Josh Zetumer. According to a spokesperson for the studio, “Our hope is that Nolfi, a key member of the ‘Bourne’ team, will return after he is done with The Adjustment Bureau.” So, if and when Nolfi does come back where does that leave the new guy? They haven’t made it clear whether or not they will fuse the two stories together upon his return.

That sounds horrible right off the bat. Universal is scaring be with their questionable writing practices. If your going to have multiple screenwriters, have them work together so there can be some sort of cohesiveness to the end product. Don’t ruin Bourne for me!

If you were hoping to see Jason Bourne roaming around the silver-screen sometime soon, you’re in for a long wait. Collider reported that Matt Damon was asked about the fourth installment while promoting his History Channel special The People Speak, and what he said is somewhat of a bubble-buster for fanatics.

“None of us have kind of seen the script yet and Paul Greengrass is still cutting a movie that we worked on.”

Enough said Damon, we get it. There you have it folks, the star of the franchise himself hasn’t seen a script from new writer George Nolfi, who was reportedly hired by Universal to write the fourth script. Perhaps no one was happy with the rough draft, or everyone is too busy with other projects? Either way, it seems that another installment of the Bourne franchise will take a while.

Just in case you’re a big Damon fan, you can catch him in theaters October 9th as Mark Whitacre in The Informant.

Matt Damon to Star in The Adjustment Bureau

Matt Damon is one of my favorite actors so when I came across this story I just had to write something. According to Variety, Damon is set to star in an upcoming sci-fi, love story that will be directed by George Nolfi. I can’t remember Damon being in any sort of science fiction film before this, but there’s a first time for everything. The film is entitled, The Adjustment Bureau and is “loosely” based on a story by Philip K. Dick.

In The Adjustment Bureau, Damon will play a smooth talking congressman who has a serious future in national politics. He meets a beautiful ballerina, but is unable to make a connection with her due to strange and uncontrollable circumstances.

George Nolfi will not only direct, but he’ll co-produce the film alongside Chris Moore, Michael Hackett and Bill Carraro. Production is slated to begin this fall in September. Bureau is a sweet business deal for Damon, the original offer sheet for the film states that the actor will receive a 20% first-dollar- gross back end deal. If this movie’s a commercial success along the lines of the Bourne Trilogy, think of the profit he’ll make. Smart move!

Speaking of Bourne, Nolfi wrote the script for the Bourne Ultimatum and is on board to write the fourth installment, which will be directed by Paul Greengrass. Both films are being distributed by Universal.

NEWS: A Fourth Bourne Film in the Works

Well, when you make over $1 billion, no one wants to stop you. Universal Pictures has just made a deal with Robert Ludlum the author of the “The Bourne Identity” series, that will give the studio exclusive rights to the Jason Bourne character and first look at other Ludlum novels.

So let’s keep the goodness going, with star Bourne star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass, who have signed on for a fourth film that George Nolfi is currently writing.

Looks like they might be trying for a new Bond…

The deal with Ludlum Entertainment paves the way for more installments in the Bourne saga, which was originally envisioned as a three-picture series but has become Universal’s answer to James Bond.

Produced by Frank Marshall and Ludlum Entertainment chairman-CEO Jeffrey Weiner, the are hoping for a summer 2010 release.

A Fourth Bourne Film is Ready for Action

Another Bourne film is in the works! That’s right, Bond isn’t the only spy that gets to keep making film after film. Although for the time being Matt Damon will be the only actor to play the Bourne role. No matter what the budget, the story line, or the director, every Bourne film has been a hit. With all three films making as much money as they are, doesn’t seem like they’ll be stopping anytime soon. Check out the numbers:
