Charlize Theron in Young Adult Trailer

Charlize Theron stars in Jason Reitman‘s Young Adult. She plays a successful author who returns home looking to get back together with what she sees as the love of her life (Patrick Wilson), but he’s not only married – his wife just had a baby. As Marvin Gaye once sang “ain’t no mountain high enough to keep me from getting to you.” There’s a trailer for the film now, check it out….

The film was written by Diablo Cody, so this is a reunion for her and her Juno director Reitman. and though it’s due out at the end of the year, it doesn’t look as prestige-centric as Reitman’s last couple of movies. Which is good – only Clint Eastwood can get away with constantly making Oscar-bait pictures.

The real question is this: are audiences tired of black comedies? 2011 is marked by the enormous success of a number of R-rated and dark comedies, with The Hangover Part II leading the pack. Maybe if the movie is funny enough, and there’s been enough time this might find an audience. And to be fair – with the Oscar nominees and winners behind the project – perhaps this is the sneakiest Oscar-bait picture ever. The film opens December 16.

James Marsden and Patrick Wilson Join Loft

Two actors with sparkling eyes and killer smiles are teaming up for a new film called Loft. According to Variety, James Marsden and Patrick Wilson have signed on to star in the thriller together. Brace yourself, it’s a remake, but a remake of Belgian film from 2008, so it’s hacky but not too hacky (if that makes sense).

Loft will be directed by Erik Van Looy, who also helmed the original from a script written by Wesley Strick ( A Nightmare on Elm Street). The film centers on “five married friends who decide to rent a loft together where they can bring their mistresses. When the body of an unknown woman is found in the loft, they realize that they don’t know each other as well as they thought and begin to suspect one another of murder.”

Do you know what this premise reminds us of? If you take away the drama, suspense, and of course the murder, you’d have Boys’ Night Out. It’s a 1962 comedy that starred James Garner, as one of four men who rent an apartment strictly for the purpose of bedding mistresses.

In Loft, there’s obviously a sense of paranoia and despair throughout the story and we can’t wait to see it! Wilson and Marsden are both amazing and versatile actors who can do comedy and drama. We’re excited to see who else they cast.

Morning Glory: Movie Review

This week you can expect a pleasant surprise when you stumble across Roger Michell’s latest film, Morning Glory. While maneuvering your way through alien invasion flicks and movies about runaway freight trains, Morning Glory is a hilarious alternative with great performances and a sharp screenplay.

The Plot:

Becky (McAdams) is a workaholic whose dream is to executive produce a national morning show — specifically NBC’s “The Today Show.” A monkey wrench is thrown into her plans when she’s fired from her current job and forced to move in with her mother until she can get back on her feet. Luckily for her, a position opens up at the lowest rated morning show in the country called “Daybreak.” Despite her lack of experience, and the lack of respect she receives from the cast and crew, Becky makes it her business to make the show a success.

She finds a loophole in the contract of a legendary news anchor named Mike Pomeroy (Ford) that forces him to join “Daybreak” as a co-anchor. Her drive to push the sensational envelope and his style of no nonsense journalism make the two an unlikely pair. In other words, inappropriate jokes and hijinks ensue!

The Good:

The Humor: This film is legitimately funny. The banter between all of the characters is snarky but still fresh and clever. For the first time, in a long time you’ll feel like you’re watching a genuine workplace comedy. Morning Glory has “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” written all over it with the only difference being words like “shit” and “pap smear” being said on camera.
The Set Design: The set up for “Daybreak” is supposed to mimic that of “The Today Show” and “Good Morning America” and it’s obvious. There’s a hardcore, low key newsroom, and a bright, over the top stage that features the on air talent. It’s a carbon copy.
Rachel McAdams: A lot of people consider The Notebook to be Rachel McAdams’ breakout movie, but she had to share the spotlight with two other guys there. In Morning Glory she does her fair share of sparring with Ford but the heart and soul of the film is Becky. She’s smart, quirky, relatable, and most importantly likable enough for audiences to enjoy the performance. McAdams does an amazing job.
The Tone: Judging from the trailer, Morning Glory looks somewhat goofy, but the movie does have its tender moments. It knows when to make you laugh and when to make you cry. There’s a time and a place for everything and Morning Glory is aware of that.

The Bad:

More Jeff Goldblum Please: I love dramatic Jeff Goldblum, and sci-fi action Jeff Goldblum, but comedic Jeff Goldblum has to be the best out of the bunch and he was nowhere to be seen in this movie. He dropped a couple of quips here and there but he was mostly the straight man against McAdam’s character.

Overall:

Morning Glory is a really entertaining, refreshing, and funny workplace comedy that features A-list talent bringing their A-game. This is definitely worth your hard earned money this weekend.

Rating: 9/10

Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne in Insidious Movie Clip

Over at Yahoo Movies, they’ve released the first clip from the indie horror film Insidious. It’s directed by James Wan and stars Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson. Last spring we had the opportunity to speak to Byrne about the film while she was out promoting Get Him to the Greek. She described the project as “really cool and really scary.” Take a look at this clip to see if you agree…

Byrne gave this brief synopsis of the film:

Patrick Wilson and I play a married couple and we have 3 children and there starts to be some strange incidents in our house. My character’s mentally kind of fragile and you’re never quite sure if it’s in her head or if it’s really happening. It’s really clever. It plays out like a domestic drama and it just descends into complete eeriness. It becomes kind of supernatural.

Insidious is currently playing at the Toronto International Film Festival but no national release date has been set. It also stars Ty Simpkins and Barbara Hershey. Is anyone else out there having flashbacks from The Entity?

The Switch: Movie Review

This weekend the semen comedy of the year, The Switch starring the easy-going Jennifer Aniston and “baby-faced-man-boy” Jason Bateman hits theaters. It’s a bit of the twist on the usual love story it’s ultimately, just another funny enough, easy to watch, rom-com. Luckily it does have a few qualities that will make your time in the theater worthwhile (provided you have popcorn and preferably a drink or five beforehand).

The Plot:

An unmarried 40-year-old woman turns to a turkey baster in order to become pregnant. Seven years later, she reunites with her best friend, who has been living with a secret: he replaced her preferred sperm sample with his own.

The Good:

Dialogue in the Opening: A lot rom-coms take a while to get going, but the dialogue in the opening few scenes to this film is Mamet-esq. It’s fast paced, doesn’t bother to explain itself and pushes us right into the film. Sadly it doesn’t stay that way throughout, but it definitely has some good moments.
Jason Bateman and Mini-Bateman: It’s a sweet, humorous relationship. It’s got some heart and the two play off one another quite well. Bateman plays his usual character with a few extra details thrown in. He’s great (as always) with dry humor and his child counterpart seems to be as well.
Jeff Goldblum: He appears to be mocking the film from within and yet for some reason it worked. His lines were one dimensional but he was at least entertaining and made certain dull lines more interesting.

The Bad:

Predictable: Though they add in the whole “semen” twist this is definitely a pretty standard rom-com, it follows the “sure-hit” structure to a T. It has enough jokes to that make you chuckle and enough heart to make you kind of care — but there is nothing original here.
No Connection: Though they gave Bateman’s character a lot of layers and he was a solid character, there is no explanation as to why they’re together and there’s never any real chemistry between them. I guess this film is a lesson on settling?
Convenient Ending: The whole movie seems to wrap itself up in a short montage, and there’s no third act. The big second act “reveal” happens and then with one short conversation everything is settled. If it’s something that easy to solve than it’s not really a problem and then why should we care?
Lack of Change: The movie takes place over 7 years and despite a few grey streaks in Bateman’s hair (which appear to come and go) and some extensions on Aniston, they look exactly they same. Would have been nice to see a little more change over such a long period of time.

Overall:

If you’re looking for something light and fluffy this is definitely it despite Bateman’s hard edge. Overall it’s just fine, better than expected, but it is what it is.

Rating: 5.5/10

The A-Team: Movie Review

I love it when an action film comes together! Despite the fact that this movie continually reminded me of Team America, it’s a solid piece of entertainment. With all the explosions, flying tanks, witty lines and references you’re hoping for, it’s pure cheesy fun. Out of all the action movies that we’ve had this summer, this is the first that is pure entertainment from start to finish (don’t shove Iron Man 2 in my face, it’s a different type of film).

The Good:

Sharlto Copley: After District 9 everyone was wondering what Copley would do next and if he could really act. He may have blown us all away with his precious performance, but that was in his native accent and with his long time friend Neill Blomkamp behind the camera. So could he pull off an American (fuck yeah!) action film? The answer: Hell yes! In fact he was show stopper. He made the film fun. He’s just as good in this film as he was in District 9, only this time he’ll have you laughing your ass off. Not only did he tackle the accent like a pro, but he also managed to completely embody the character and transform himself. It’s like he has the magical ability to bring quality to action films!
The Team: Across the board, the boys playing the A-Team seemed to really take over their roles and embody the characters (despite the one mentioned below). They had great chemistry together and really helped enhance one another’s performances.
The Tone: There’s no doubt that there will be moments when the Team America theme jumps into your head with all the over the top America – (fuck yeah!) music. The good news is that Carnahan seemed to have a strong grasp on what he was going for and really stuck with one over the top, ridiculous tone for the entire film. It was able to hold some suspense without ever becoming too serious and always seemed aware of what it was trying to accomplish – entertainment.
The Music: It might not be remembered, but it really helped drive home the tone of the movie and kept it light-hearted and fun in moments that could have become too dark.

The Bad:

Too Much Explaining: I get that the A-Team is all about “when a plan comes together” but I don’t always want to listen to every single plan come together in detail. Although I love listening to Neeson’s voice narrate the film, it was a bit excessive and not always necessary.
Rampage: Let’s be honest, out of all of the characters Mr. T (being alive and all) was the hardest one to watch on screen. No one could really ever recreate Mr. T’s performance and although Rampage may have had the physic, he didn’t quite have the presence needed to embody the character.

Overall:

Leave your brain at home, buy some popcorn and enjoy the ride!

Rating: 8/10

Morning Glory Trailer With Harrison Ford, Rachel McAdams

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a big screen workplace comedy that actually made us laugh and director Roger Mitchell‘s new film, Morning Glory might put an end to that drought. Not only does it look funny but it has an amazing cast including Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, Jeff Goldblum, Rachel McAdams, Patrick Wilson, and the awesome Ty Burrell from ABC’s “Modern Family.” What more could you ask for? Check out the trailer…

The premise for Morning Glory centers on a young TV producer who works for a morning news show that happens to be tanking in the ratings. In a last ditch effort to revitalize the program she hires a veteran news anchor (Ford) to join the show but he butts heads with the current female host and former beauty queen played by Keaton. He doesn’t want to cover gossip or fashion or any of the frilly topics that the show has to offer. It’s old school meets new school and the laughs ensue.

The film actually looks funny and its great to see Ford in a comedy that has a decent story. He’s always hilarious in interviews so we know he has a personality and the timing to pull off this material. The rest of the cast is just icing on the cake. Rachel McAdams can do no wrong.

Morning Glory will hit theaters on November 12, 2010.

The A-Team New Trailer and Poster

A new theatrical trailer has been released for this summer’s big screen adaptation of The A-Team. The film is based on the cult TV show of the same name and features a cast led by veteran actor, Liam Neeson. The more we see from the film the more I’m convince that it will be awesome, campy fun. Plus there’s explosions galore and isn’t that what The A-Team‘s all about? Check out the latest trailer…

The premise of the film follows the same plot of the series except everything’s been pushed back about 25 years. Three of the four characters in question obviously didn’t serve in Vietnam because with the exception of Neeson, none of them where born back then. This follow up to the first trailer is filled with more random explosions and unfortunately more Jessica Biel. I could definitely do without her in this movie, but it’s not about what I want.

There are a few homages to the original series that are great to see like B.A. Baracus’ knuckle tattoos that say “Pity and Fool” on each hand. The old theme song also appears on more than one occasion at the beginning and the end of the trailer. It’s good to see that they highlight Murdoch’s partial insanity, and Sharlto Copley is pulling off his southern accent a lot better than I thought he would.

Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman’s The Switch Trailer

The first trailer has been released for Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman’s latest film entitled The Switch. The movie was originally called The Baster but the name was changed for reasons we’ll explain below. The project appears to be another wonky, romantic comedy that the actress can add to her growing resume. See for yourself…

The story for the film centers on two best friends (Aniston, Bateman) who become parents of a child in a very unconventional way. Aniston’s character plans on using a sperm donor played by Patrick Wilson, to impregnate her via artificial insemination. Bateman on the other hand is madly in love with her and wonders why she didn’t ask him to do the honors. During one drunken night he accidentally switches Wilson’s sperm for his own and seven years later wonders if he’s really the father of his best friends son.

The cast for The Switch also includes Jeff Goldblum and Juliette Lewis, and it pains me to say that this film looks mildly funny. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it when I heard about the concept but Bateman makes everything better for me. He knows how to walk the line of comedy and sincerity, and am I the only one who finds it hilarious that Goldblum is in his 50′s but playing a “wingman” type of character?

Liv Tyler And Patrick Wilson Join The Ledge

Liv Tyler and Patrick Wilson have both joined the upcoming suspense film, The Ledge. The movie already has Terrence Howard and Charlie Hunnam on board as the leads, and the latest actors will both appear in supporting roles. Production on the film already began shooting on Monday, so Tyler and Wilson are a bit late, but they’re still in the game.

The plot for The Ledge sounds eerily familiar to another film we’ve seen in the past decade. It centers on a young man (Hunnam) who’s standing on a high-rise ledge insisting that he must jump by noon as the policeman below (Howard) tries to manage the situation. I’m not saying its an exact replica of the scenario in Phone Booth, but it does have a life or death situation and a man in an isolated area being coaxed by a cop. Just throwing that out there.

There’s no real description of who Tyler and Wilson will play in the film, possibly family members, a love interest, who knows? The Ledge is an indie drama that comes from first-time writer-director Matthew Chapman. The film is currently shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The last time we saw Liv Tyler on the big screen it was for The Incredible Hulk and The Strangers, and Patrick Wilson appeared in last year’s Watchmen and he’ll be back this summer in the blockbuster, The A-Team.

Patrick Wilson Cast in the A-Team

How did we miss this casting? Patrick Wilson aka Nite-Owl II from Watchmen, has been cast in the upcoming A-Team movie. According to EW, Wilson was another actor who officially signed onto the film, along with Sharlto Copley and Jessica Biel. Wilson is no stranger to action films, so it will be interesting to see him go toe to toe with the men of the A-Team.

The primary roles in the film have already been filled so Wilson won’t being playing a member of the underground team. The major characters already spoken for include Bradley Cooper as Faceman, Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson as Baracus, and Sharlto Copley as Murdoch. Wilson has signed on to play a CIA operative, which I’m assuming makes him one of the bad guys. The A-Team hates the government!

Out of this cast I’m the most excited to see Cooper, Neeson, and Copley play their respective roles. Liam Neeson is just badass in whatever he does and I really want to see Sharlto do some physical comedy. Murdoch is such a loose canon, and he’s so unpredictable. Production on The A-Team has already started in Vancouver, and the film is scheduled to hit theaters next summer in June of 2010.

Too many people in too many projects! Sorry everyone, we’re going to have to do a roundup! We’ve got Patrick Wilson in a comedy, Megan Fox in an action drama, and Catherine Keener as a Greek Godess. Check out more after the jump!

Patrick Wilson (Watchmen) will be starring in the comedy Morning Glory opposite Harrison Ford, Rachel McAdams, Diane Keaton and Jeff Goldblum. Ford and Keaton will play the battling new anchors on a failing morning show, while McAdams plays the young producer who has come in to save the day. Wilson will play McAdams’ romantic partner.

Megan Fox is attempting to make something other then a CGI blockbuster. She will be starring in Fox and is about a couple returning from a vacation from Mexico when their car is hijacked and the wife (Fox) is forced to smuggle heroin to save her hubby. Sounds like she’ll get some action scenes in there somewhere!

Catherine Keener has joined Christopher Columbus’ adaptation of Rick Riordan’s fantasy-adventure book series, Percy Jackson. She will be joining Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Kevin McKidd and Melina Kanakaredes. The books bring ancient Greece into modern times, where Poseidon’s half-human son, Percy, is on a quest a to prevent a war among the gods. Keener plays Percy’s mother, who has battled to protect her son from otherworldly forces but has been abducted by Hades.
