Over on the Paramount website, the director of Paranormal Activity, Oren Peli has officially put all the rumors on who will direct the sequel to bed and announced that Paranormal Activity 2 will be directed by Kip Williams. Despite the rumors that Akiva Goldsma, Kevin Greutert, Greg McLean and even Brian De Palma (that’s a big one) might be coming on board, Peli went with director he believes in.
Although it’s still a shame that Peli won’t be staying on to direct the film himself, it seems that he’s (at least through the Paramount website) happily handing over the reins to Williams as a director and I’m sure he’ll stay on as some kind of producer (at least an executive that walks on, gets a cup of coffee and says “I love/hate it!” and goes back to another project). Stop the presses! Weeks ago when the shortlist of directors for Paranormal Activity 2 were released Akiva Goldsman was one of the candidates mentioned, but not in a million years did anyone think he would actually take the job. According to Shock Till You Drop, he’s in the lead to helm the sequel to Paramount’s breakout hit from last year.
Ever since the abrupt exit of Saw VI director Kevin Greutert, we’ve been in the dark as to who Paramount will have take on the sequel to box office smash, Paranormal Activity. This morning a few interesting names popped up as possible candidates via The Los Angeles Times. A wide range of directors are being considered to direct the film ranging from well respected veterans to campy horror newbies.
We recently reported on how Saw VI director Kevin Greutert, was up to helm the sequel to the surprise hit, Paranormal Activity. According to Cinemablend, the folks over at Lionsgate, the studio producing the Saw films, have forced Greutert to direct the next installment of their series, which would delay production on Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 2.
We all knew the sequel to Paranormal Activity would be coming sooner or later, the first film made too much money for Paramount to pass up. Now the low-budget goldmine will return with a follow up that will be helmed by Kevin Greutert, aka the guy who directed Saw VI. Does this smell like a match made in heaven or a disaster waiting to happen?
It feels like just yesterday Paranormal Activity was blazing the box office with record breaking screenings. The indie hit that became a horror phenomenon for Paramount Pictures will soon be available on DVD and Blu-ray. The release date has been set for December 29th, and the disc will contain plenty of paranormal extras.
