Paranormal Activity 3: Movie Review

Realistically, Oren Peli‘s 2009 film Paranormal Activity should never had generated a sequel. There’s not much of a story to tell and explaining why people are haunted by ghosts is just as likely to ruin the mystique as expand on it. But 2010′s Paranormal Activity 2 was also a huge hit, and so a year later there’s a third film. And unlike the last film – which went back and forth in time- this time it’s entirely a prequel. The results are more effective, but it works better as a haunted house film than as a story.

The Plot:

After brief cameos from the original film’s Katie (Katie Featherston) and her sister – and second film star – Kristi Ray (Sprague Garden), the movie shifts to 1988 where their stepfather Dennis (Smith) has moved in. He makes wedding videos, while his wife Julie (Bittner) is independently wealthy and has two young daughters: Katie (Csengery) and Kristi Ray (Brown). Kristi has been talking to an imaginary person named Toby, and after a night where Dennis records something ghostly during an earthquake, he begins to videotape everything. And then the ghosting gets worse.

The Good:

Jump Scares: Do you like them? These film have a pattern. They lure you in to a sense of quiet and then you see something, then either something jumps at the camera, or something moves fast, or a human is dragged around. But no matter how you steel yourself, the film is going to surprise you and make you jump.
A Better Sequel: The last film spent a lot of time being boring. There’s nothing inherently wrong with a little bit of boring in a horror film because often the audience is waiting in anticipation of what’s coming next, and so sometimes that can make the wait for release more exciting. In the second film it slipped into tedium, where here the filmmakers know what they’re doing, so even though the film has to have lulls, it never becomes as tedious. They also use a moving camera, which – though the gag is always the same – manages to work pretty much every time.
Haunted House: These films work on a very simple principle – everyone at some point in their life has heard a noise in the middle of the night, or been awake and not wanted to go into a dark corridor or down to a basement. This film is very successful at tapping into that fear, and it functions much like a haunted house. At this point in the franchise there’s no real dread left – especially in a prequel – but like a good haunted house, someone’s going to yell “boo!” loud enough to make you jump.

The Bad:

The Conceit is absurd at this point: Without harping on the fact that the video is in widescreen and of a quality unimaginable in 1988, the film has people taping themselves while they’re watching the footage they’ve shot. When The Blair Witch Project modernized the “found footage” concept, the way that film was constructed was rock solid, and played on the audience’s ability to not see things. in recent years it’s been embraced by studios looking to make films cheaper (shot on video, can’t show everything), though the first Paranormal Activity at least felt believable. At this point the narrative conceit is as organic and truthful as a pizza guy showing up in a porno.
Boo!: These films are now stripped down to stick figure characters who have something weird happen to them, and then things gets terrible for them by the end. Though this is better constructed than the second film, at this point, it’s the exact same things happening over and over again. Effectively at that, but it’s simply being startled.
What it Explains: This offers a modest explanation of why there’s been a haunting, but it opens the door to more questions. And though it may be silly to ask what a ghost’s motivations are – at this point, you have to assume that the ghost or spirit involved likes playing for the camera. Perhaps the next film will explain that, but when the film suggests why there’s been these things happening, it’s mostly groan inducing.

Overall:

When you push out a film like this a year, it’s interesting to compare it to the horror films of old. Is this any better or worse than Friday the 13th Part 3-D? These are the crappy horror films of their time, and perhaps they will be viewed with a fondness that previous generations felt for the Universal horror films of the 1930′s and 40′s, or – more recently – Freddy Kruger, Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers. But like many of those films the first in the series were usually good or had good ideas, but the further you continued the franchise the less menace the central threat has, and = for the most part – the sequels just try to copy what made the original work. This film sets out to make the audience sit on the edge of their seat, scream, jump, and perhaps talk back to the screen. On that level it is very successful. A film doesn’t need to have great characters or a great purpose or a great story to be effective.

Rating: 6.5/10

New Paranormal Activity 3 Trailer and Contest

You have to give credit to the people behind Paranormal Activity. The first film by Oren Peli became a word of mouth sensation, and they were smart to rush the second film into production to come out a year later. Now, just two years after the first film, they’ve already got a third film due out October 21. They’ve released a better trailer for it, and it already looks scarier than the second film. Check it out…

Though it appears this sequel could be called Paranormal Activity 3: Backstory, the trailer has more jump scares and spooky moments than all of the second film combined. The second film opened well, but it didn’t have the same impact or fun of the first film, it was also a weird prequel/sequel that told you many of the events happened before the first film so you knew it couldn’t go too far.

Here we’re fully into the backstory of the characters, but it already has a much creepier tone and feel. This may be due to directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the masterminds behind the documentary (or should that be “documentary”) Catfish. They also seemed to have a little bit longer of a time to get the sequel ready, as this was surely planned slightly before the release of Paranormal Activity 2.

“The support of this franchise from the online community is phenomenal. We again look to reward them for that support by offering them the chance to see it first, this time expanding our reach globally,” said Rob Moore, Vice Chairman of Paramount Pictures.

To vote, fans can go to www.ParanormalMovie.com and select their city from a global map, which will also serve as the point of entry to create a tweet with a special set of hash tags that link directly to twitter. Once a tweet posts, it counts as a vote. A leader board will show the top 20 global markets in real-time.

The “Tweet To See It First” competition is available to audiences worldwide and ends at 11:59 p.m. PDT on Thursday, October 13^th. The top 20 cities will be announced on Friday, October 14^th.

Paranormal Activity 3 Release Date Announced

In October, Paranormal Activity 2 opened to great reviews and even greater money. The film was a huge success and has grossed $156 million so far at the box office. The first film topped off at $193 million so it won’t be long before the sequel catches up. While Paramount is counting their money, they’ve decided to push a third film into development, and according to Bloody Disgusting they’ve already got a release date set.

The site has gotten exclusive confirmation from the producer and director of the first Paranormal Activity Oren Peli, that the third film is scheduled to hit theaters on October 21, 2011. It looks like they’re sticking with the Halloween theme. Could this franchise be picking up where the Saw series left off?

No other details have been released about the sequel other than the date. For those of you who have seen the movie, where could the story go from here? Where should the film take place? We’re assuming they’re going to stick with the “found footage” format that the series is known for but how many more people can they watch? After a while, it’s going to get redundant like another horror franchise we know (cough Saw).

Weekend Box Office: Saw 3D Tops Charts Halloween Weekend

This weekend horror films Saw 3D and Paranormal Activity 2 took the top two spots at the box office. The final installment of the long-running Saw franchise topped the box office with $24.2 million — people sure do love the jigsaw.

Now, most of the movies down below have been the top ten week after week, but this weekend Conviction, starring Hilary Swank, made it’s way up the ladder once it was finally given a wider release. Last week the legal drama was all the way down at number 25. Impressive, eh?

Weekend Box Office: Paranormal Activity 2 Breaks Record

This Halloween season everyone is going bananas for Paranormal Activity, the sequel. Much like its predecessor, the horror film has broken box office records. It took the number one spot this weekend earning $41 million, while breaking the record for the biggest midnight gross for an R-rated movie. Clint Eastwood‘s Hereafter, which was also new this weekend, came in at number four — he just couldn’t keep those crazy Jackass boys away from the number 2 spot!

Paranormal Activity 2 Breaks R-Rated Midnight Record

The freaks come out and night and the majority of them are drawn to the horror sequel, Paranormal Activity 2. Thursday evening, fans of the film lined up in droves across the country to attend the first midnight screenings of the sequel, and all their dedication paid off big for the studio. PA 2 broke a box office record while simultaneously scaring the sh*t out of viewers.

According to EW, Paranormal Activity grossed $6.3. million from its midnight shows alone on Thursday night. The number might not sound like much in comparison to the latest comic book or sci-fi movie, but you have to understand that it’s rated R. That’s a big gross for a film that has an age limit put on its audience.

The film’s numbers toppled the previous R rated midnight champ, 2009′s Watchmen. It also broke the record for the widest October midnight release, which was set by Jackass 3D a mere week ago. This is a good sign that the sequel will pass its predecessor’s opening weekend of $21 million.

We’re not surprised that the film made this much money because Paramount has been heavily promoting it as a “midnight movie.” This falls into place with their marketing strategy and people are eating it right up.

Early Reviews: Paranormal Activity 2

Paranormal Activity 2 will hit theaters on Friday October 22nd, and people want to know if it will live up to its predecessor. Will it be the Empire Strikes Back of the franchise or the next Blair Witch: Book of Shadows? Press screenings have been held all over the country and critics are weighing in whether or not the sequel is a worthy follow up that deserves your hard earned cash. Check out what everyone has to say below…

The Set Up:

The film’s central protagonist is the sister of the first Paranormal Activity‘s hapless Katie (actress Katie Featherston). A young mom with a husband, a stepdaughter (from a previous marriage, which ended in his wife’s death), and a baby, she’s played by the adorable Sprague Grayden of TV’s Jericho. Grayden, with her fair skin and bright eyes, bears more than a passing resemblance to Featherston, which helps with our suspension of disbelief and adds to the casual, documentary-filmmaking style that Paranormal Activity 2 shares with its predecessor. The Baby:

There is something about putting a baby in a kind of vague danger that really upped the ante for me with PA2. In some films, putting an infant in harms way is cheap and awful; here, it’s spooky as hell. And if it’s even possible, I felt more of a sense of dread than I did during the first go-round, and anytime the baby started crying and someone ran from downstairs to check on him, I tensed up at the thought of what they might find waiting in or absent from that crib. Comparisons to the Original:

It’s difficult of course to say much more about the film, particularly in how it connects to the original, without giving away some of the fun in store for fans. But for now, I can say that I can’t imagine a Paranormal Activity fan being disappointed with Paranormal Activity 2. As a smart, scary expansion of the original, it succeeds brilliantly. In its own way, it’s arguably the most satisfying horror film sequel I’ve seen since the original Dawn of the Dead. [FEARNet]

In most ways, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 exceeds the scares of the first film, and does so without resorting to easy special effects or growing the plot outside of the home. There were a few times when I questioned why a family member might pull out a video camera at a particular moment in the story, but every time I screamed, I kind of forgot to consider the question. The caliber of the acting is better in the new movie, and that means a great deal toward selling the fear. [AICN]

The Disappointments:

The biggest disappointment for me was that it wasn’t a superior film. I expected things to escalate to a higher degree, like any sequel would, but I can’t help but commend the production team for doing only what was necessary to make the sequel work. Paranormal Activity 2 literally is the sexy twin sister of Paranormal Activity; they look slightly different, have a few variant birthmarks, and carry their own personalities – but neither one is better than the other. In fact, they’re tonally so similar that when the film ended I joked about republishing my initial review for the sequel.[Bloody Disgusting]

It goes without saying that Paranormal Activity 2 won’t win over any new fans. If the first film didn’t do anything for you, neither will this one. But if you felt the effects last time, if you hesitated before turning off the light or felt nervous in a room by yourself, prepare to feel the same again. This is a rare sequel that complements and enhances the original without betraying the elements that made it work in the first place, and watched back-to-back, it’s the perfect one-two punch of creepy excellence. Every creak and groan in your house becomes suspect, and going to sleep is that much harder. Believe it, folks; lightning can indeed strike twice, and this flick will hit you with frightening force. New Paranormal Activity 2 Trailer – Save the Children!

A new trailer has been released for Paramount’s upcoming sequel Paranormal Activity 2. The teaser debuted back in June and brought some new elements to the series – disappearing babies! Who doesn’t get scared sh*tless when a defenseless child goes missing and the watch dog is none the wiser? This new trailer doesn’t ease your fears one bit because it features even more family elements and a ton of new footage. Take a look…

Where are all the children coming from in this trailer? We counted 3 different ones, the infant, the little girl in the photo, and what looked like a 4 or 5 year old boy standing in the dark. On another note, have you noticed the horrible acting? Not to say that the original had groundbreaking performances but this is pretty bad.

Now that the general public knows that the movie and its premise is fake and it’s not a legit documentary, will it have the same effect? Do you think people will still go out and see it even though so many of its secrets have been revealed?

Official Paranormal Activity 2 Teaser Trailer

Earlier this week, we told you there was a good chance that the first teaser trailer for Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 2 would be attached to select screenings of The Twilight Saga Eclipse. Conveniently, the studio debuted the trailer on their official website just as the film premiered last night and it’s very family oriented… in a weird, poltergeist kind of way. Take a look…

That house is huge! There’s plenty of room for outlandish supernatural things to take place. Plus, there’s a dog, a baby, and a dark-haired woman who looks like she’s up to no good. Even though the look of the film appears similar to the original, we’re not sure if this sequel (like most) will live up to the hype. Is this another Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows?

The studio wanted to get their first bit of marketing out for the film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on October 22, 2010, the same day as Saw VII.

Paranormal Activity Trailer Attached to Twilight Eclipse

For those of you itching to see the latest installment of The Twilight Saga, prepare to be blown away by more than just vampires and werewolves. According to a report from ShockTillYouDrop, you might get your first glance at the horror phenomenon, Paranormal Activity 2 (you thought they forgot about that huh?).

According to the site’s sources, it’s “very likely” that a teaser trailer for the film will be attached to prints of Eclipse. The movie is slated to hit theaters on October 22nd and we haven’t seen any serious marketing for it which is strange considering how in your face the original’s campaign was.

There was speculation that the studio would hold out until Comic-Con to unveil footage from PA 2 but with Saw VII 3D hot on their tales they want to get a head start.

In all honesty, I don’t think the folks behind either film can really one-up the other. The Saw series is on the decline and some people view Paranormal Activity 2 as the second coming of Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (that’s not a good comparison) so they both have their work cut out for them. May the best sequel win!

Pick of the week: I am Legend

Will Smith is one of those entertainers that rarely does wrong when it comes to action blockbusters and the Francis Lawrence film, I am Legend, is no exception. The Sci-Fi thriller focuses mostly on Smith’s character, along with his loyal dog companion, as he tries to find a cure to the plague that hit and killed mos of humanity and transformed the rest into monsters. It’s big and silly, but a lot of fun! The prequel to the hit movie is currently in the works.
