Ever since the abrupt exit of Saw VI director Kevin Greutert, we’ve been in the dark as to who Paramount will have take on the sequel to box office smash, Paranormal Activity. This morning a few interesting names popped up as possible candidates via The Los Angeles Times. A wide range of directors are being considered to direct the film ranging from well respected veterans to campy horror newbies.

We recently reported on how Saw VI director Kevin Greutert, was up to helm the sequel to the surprise hit, Paranormal Activity. According to Cinemablend, the folks over at Lionsgate, the studio producing the Saw films, have forced Greutert to direct the next installment of their series, which would delay production on Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 2.

It feels like just yesterday Paranormal Activity was blazing the box office with record breaking screenings. The indie hit that became a horror phenomenon for Paramount Pictures will soon be available on DVD and Blu-ray. The release date has been set for December 29th, and the disc will contain plenty of paranormal extras.

Wow. Just to show how viral campaigning and word of mouth can topple the opening of a gigantic franchise, Paranormal Activity in it’s fifth week in theaters took down Saw VI with a swift kick to the knees. Paramount must be so happy right now. They are just living the dream of taking a small movie and blowing it up as big as it can possibly go.
With the economy as it is and studios in trouble, you can bet we are going to see a lot of movies about this time next year trying to emulate Paranormal’s success. Hell, they could make a hundred small budget films for the price of one main stream one and only need one to hit to make back their money. Don’t tell me that’s not tempting, especially when you see so many mainstream films missing the mark..
