The River TV Show Get Ready for The River with a Preview

ABC’s The River – which looks like an attempt to recapture the magic of Lost – premieres tonight, February 7. Though less a puzzle box (ala J.J. Abrams) and more of a jump scare-centric piece, Paranormal Activity‘s Oren Peli is the big name on the project as its creator. The show follows a family looking for their famous explorer father, and ends up on the Amazon looking for his lost vessel. Check out the preview featurette…

Realistically, Oren Peli‘s 2009 film Paranormal Activity should never had generated a sequel. There’s not much of a story to tell and explaining why people are haunted by ghosts is just as likely to ruin the mystique as expand on it. But 2010′s Paranormal Activity 2 was also a huge hit, and so a year later there’s a third film. And unlike the last film – which went back and forth in time- this time it’s entirely a prequel. The results are more effective, but it works better as a haunted house film than as a story.

paranormal activity 3 New Paranormal Activity 3 Trailer and Contest

You have to give credit to the people behind Paranormal Activity. The first film by Oren Peli became a word of mouth sensation, and they were smart to rush the second film into production to come out a year later. Now, just two years after the first film, they’ve already got a third film due out October 21. They’ve released a better trailer for it, and it already looks scarier than the second film. Check it out…

It’s rare that you find a crowd as passionate and as dedicated as the Paranormal Activity fans. They like many other horror film fans enjoy being scared out of the minds but unlike the Saw crowd, they’re not looking for gore, they’re looking for something truly scary. What they found in Paranormal Activity and hopefully in Paranormal Activity 2 was a film that could scare them to the core;onw that played on their base emotions, that felt real and that delivered a new, edgy horror film.

The second film had a lot to live up to, but with such a strong following, the fans didn’t want to question the film, they wanted to  be there from the very beginning in support of it. You can check out the early reviews of the film now and watch videos of the crazed fans in line, interviews with the star of the film Katie Featherston and the original director and producer of the second film Oren Peli, and most importantly reactions from the audience during the screening below…

ParanormalActivity hero Oren Peli Announces Kip Williams as the Director of Paranormal Activity 2

Over on the Paramount website, the director of Paranormal Activity, Oren Peli has officially put all the rumors on who will direct the sequel to bed and announced that Paranormal Activity 2 will be directed by Kip Williams. Despite the rumors that Akiva Goldsma, Kevin Greutert, Greg McLean and even Brian De Palma (that’s a big one) might be coming on board, Peli went with director he believes in.

Although it’s still a shame that Peli won’t be staying on to direct the film himself, it seems that he’s (at least through the Paramount website) happily handing over the reins to Williams as a director and I’m sure he’ll stay on as some kind of producer (at least an executive that walks on, gets a cup of coffee and says “I love/hate it!” and goes back to another project). Here’s what Peli wrote…

***Update: Win tickets to Paranormal Activity now!***

Did anybody hear that??  If you heard eerie sounds coming from the Arclight Theater in Hollywood last night – don’t be frightened – it was just the insufferable moans of a disappointed audience leaving the midnight screening of Paramount Pictures’ latest marketing experiment Paranormal Activity. I think everyone was rooting for writer/director Oren Peli, an Israeli-born game-developer turned fledgling filmmaker who made the horror flick just inside of two weeks and $15,000, but it’s a difficult movie to get behind.

The camera-in-hand, home video style film made its debut in 2007 at Austin Texas’ Screamfest film festival and it probably should have not gone much further without major modification.  It’s not wretched enough to keep out of a festival, but it really should have not made the big screen quite yet.
