Cowboys and Aliens: Movie Review

This weekend in theaters, Favreau is back with two grumpy, bad-asses, Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford with his latest genre twist, Cowboys & Aliens. The film is big and bad, with plenty of explosions and known faces, but it never quite delivered on anything I was hoping for. The biggest problem with this film is that it’s very much a Western, with alien bad-guys, that never really evokes the natural comedy that one would imagine should come with a film titled “Cowboys& Aliens”. The Plot:

The film is set in Arizona in 1873 in the midst of the gold rush in the wild west, a time where men were real men. Suddenly a spaceship arrives to take over the Earth and a posse of cowboys have to take them down before all of their friends and family are farmed by the aliens.

The Good:

Rockwell: He has a small role, but was by far the most humorous and interesting to watch. Rockwell seems to have a power on screen that sucks you in and makes you care about him even in the most trivial of roles. Favreau also works best with funny, quick-witted actors, that seem to enjoy their time on camera. He knows how to let them play and they know how to deliver. The combo was great in the Iron Man films and wonderful here as well.
Scares: This was the first time in a long time that aliens actually managed to scare an audience. In a film that was very bland, it was great to have a few powerful “jump” moments… if only there would have been more of that in the tone from the start, this may have been a kick-ass film…

The Bad:

Lack of Humor: For a film with such a humorous title they sure do take themselves extremely seriously. Everything about the film is serious, and Favreau doesn’t thrive in that genre. The film touches on horror aspects which to me sounds like a fun idea… I guess it’s a little too late to throw our that suggestion though? If you’re going to make a film “Cowboys and Aliens,” give the audience what they’re looking for, some humor and an epic battle between the two, this film has neither of the two.
Pleasant, Tough Old Men: You have Craig and Harrison, who are both old(er), cranky, tough guys — use it to the film’s advantage! Don’t rely on daddy issues, let the two have at it! Watching them bounce off one another could have been extremely funny, but instead, they played everything so damn seriously and the script was written without much humor and therefore their relationship was extremely flat and there was no real chemistry between two. They’re naturally grouchy, and have great timing… let us see it!
Writing/Writers: 5 screenwriter, 3 story writers and 1 comic book writer = 1 inconsistent mess with no real sense of self and no consistent tone throughout.

Overall:

It’s just not what it could have been and it’s a shame, though it’s not bad with a drink and a bucket of popcorn.

Rating: 4.5/10

House: Season 7 Episode 21: The Fix – TV Review

“House” is winding down a dramatic season that has featured a lot of ups and downs for its various characters, and while this particular episode doesn’t exactly change the game too dramatically, it does end in a change for a character that we didn’t exactly expect. While there is reason to believe that this positive momentum won’t last, it did provide for a solid episode. Read our review to learn more…

Episode Title: “The Fix”

A weapons designer falls into the care of the Princeton-Plainsboro team after experiencing what appears to be a seizure after the successful test of one of her latest designs, and her boyfriend insists that foul play must have been involved. While the team treats this female Tony Stark, House is has little time for the case. He’s splitting his time between trying to diagnose a struggling boxer whose poor performance in the ring resulted in House losing a bet to Wilson, and engaging in what appears to be heroin usage. Of course, nothing is ever that simple on this show.

The Good:

New developments: While it’s still as good as always, you could be forgiven for feeling a little disappointed in “House” these days. After several seasons of cynicism and uncompromising depressing, House was finally making progress. He quit using Vicodin, developed a strong relationship with Cuddy, and eased off on the whole “everyone lies because we’re all horrible human beings deep down” schtick. Of course, seeing as his misanthropic ways served as the basis of the show’s dramatic tension, the writers couldn’t let a good thing last for too long. He’s back to his old self, and while it certainly feels like we’ve been taking a few steps in the wrong direction recently, when he experiments with a new drug designed to promote muscle growth, House is allowed to experience something positive for a change. Who knows how long this good fortune will last–we hesitate to make any sort of guess–but while it’s here, we’re interested.
Bar Speech: As far as mainstream TV goes, “House” has always offered us above average writing. Sure, too often its characters speak less like real people and more like wannabe psychologists, but the series certainly presents viwers with deeper insights into human nature than “Grey’s Anatomy” is likely to provide. This is especially evident in this episode, when House delivers a drunken diatribe against a bartender who refuses to serve him another drink. He doesn’t make any groundbreaking statements, but he does have some relatively interesting things to say.

The So-So:

Wilson’s Win: There is a scene earlier in this episode that doesn’t quite work the way that it ought to. Upon winning a bet against House, Wilson dances into his office and demands the money he so rightly deserves. Sadly, unless he’s drunk–or, more likely, been drugged by House–dancing ain’t Wilson’s thing, and while Robert Sean Leonard, as always, gives himself fully to the performance, it ultimately feels like an attempt at levity that ends up missing the mark. Nice try at laughs, but the best this moment got out of us was an awkward chuckle.

The Bad:

Murderous Plots: By this point, we’re used to the subplots of “House” devolving into melodrama, but this one takes a turn away from medical drama and into “Law & Order” land that it doesn’t quite earn. The plot shift comes out of nowhere and the explanation isn’t convincing.

Overall:

While the actual case itself leaves something to be desired–but then again, the novelty of these subplots has worn itself out–the developments in House’s character are enough to redeem this episode. In a season which has featured its fair share of shocking developments, this doesn’t push the envelope too far, but we like the direction it takes towards the end.

New Cowboys And Aliens Trailer

One of the more interesting summer movies this year is Jon Favreau‘s Cowboys and Aliens, which opens July 29. It stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell, and Oliva Wilde, and combines science fiction action (and invasion) with the old west. The latest trailer finally starts giving more details of the film’s narrative, and more of a look at the alien invasion and some of their tools. Take a look..

The new thing seems to be that at least the middle section of the movie will be dedicated to chasing after the aliens (which reminds me of Rango a little), and that for sure either Olivia Wilde is an alien, or had some experiences with them. Perhaps she’s some sort of Yoda for Craig’s character.

The two things about this film that concern me most are the director and Harrison Ford. Jon Favreau’s Iron Man films partly get over because of the performers, but the second film got away from pretty much everybody. Hopefully this is more reigned in. As per Ford, he’s older now, and the last couple of performances have been harder to watch because he doesn’t always seem on the ball. Ford still carries great weight as an icon, but it’s been a while since he’s given much of a performance (though he wasn’t bad in Morning Glory).

We’ll know for sure this summer, but for now the trailer offers spectacle.It’s also nice that one of the event films of the summer isn’t a sequel (though it is based on a comic book).

House: Season 7 Episode 18: The Dig – TV Review

This week’s episode of “House” marked the much-awaited return of Olivia Wilde, and we’re very pleased to report that she delivered big and made her comeback especially memorable. While the episode struggled to balance its various stories, one of the plots was impressive enough to keep us hooked, leaving us genuinely moved by the end of the hour. Episode Title: “The Dig”

House picks up Thirteen from prison and enlists her help in a, uh, ”spud gun” competition while trying to figure out what she did to get in trouble with the law in the first place. The team treats a patient whose wife is a compulsive hoarder, and Taub spends his free time hooking up with a mystery woman who turns out to be someone very significant from his past.

The Good:

House and Thirteen: Olivia Wilde’s return to “House” is as strong as we could possibly hope it to be. The writers have found a way to give her character some interesting developments without getting too melodramatic, something which is always a danger on this show. We’re glad she’s back and look forward to seeing where the show takes this story arc. Her moments with House remind us that Olivia Wilde is a very talented actress who isn’t simply getting by on her looks.
Taub’s dilemma: Taub finds himself in a rather unique situation this week, and while we can’t say for sure that he ends up doing the right thing at the end of the episode, we can say that the story went in a direction we weren’t exactly expecting it to. It was a refreshing take on his character, although we don’t know where this particular subplot is going to go, if anywhere.

The So-So:

Hoarders: The real emotional weight in this episode comes from the relationship between Thirteen and House; everything else just seems like it was tacked on to take up some screen time. Such is especially the case with these week’s “medical mystery.” The inclusion of a character who epitomizes the hoarder lifestyle seems like a weak attempt to make this part of the episode relevant when it didn’t need to be.
Western: There’s a scene in this episode that plays out as a classic gunslinger showdown, and while it added some levity to the otherwise emotionally intense proceedings, we can’t say that it was easy for us to take it all that seriously. No one behaves like that in real life, so the moment felt out of place in an episode devoted to depicting authentic human drama.
House’s Wife: We’re really unhappy with the fact that House recently got married, and we’re not too thrilled to discover that the writers can’t even find any interesting way for his “wife” to contribute to the drama. Sure, any attempt to get her involved this time around would have felt artificial, but perhaps we’re just peeved by the fact that she exists, whether she’s involved or not.

The Bad:

Masters: Nothing against Amber Tamblyn, who does her best with Masters, but let’s face it, she’s not a well-written character. Her curiosity with the life of her patient seems way too forced, her enthusiasm way too unconvincing. Maybe, like Cameron before her, she’ll mature a bit, but she’s making slow progress.

Overall:

While that review looks as though we weren’t too thrilled about this episode–there’s an equal amount of topics in all sections–we have to say that the main plot, featuring the triumphant return of Thirteen, was strong enough to make this week’s episode memorable. The emotional content of her story was especially effective, and the script even managed to slip a commentary on euthanasia into the episode without making it too explicit. We liked what we saw.

Rating: 8/10

Over the past few years, Walt Disney Pictures has been teaming up with celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz to recreate some of their most iconic characters. They get Hollywood’s hottest stars and place them in scenarios from classic Disney films. Some of the previous photos they’ve done included Rachel Weisz as Snow White, Beyonce as Alice in Wonderland, and Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony as Princess Jasmine and Aladdin.

This latest batch features Tron Legacy stars Jeff Bridges and Olivia Wilde, Penelope Cruz, Alec Baldwin, and Queen Latifah. Take a look…

Oddly enough, Olivia Wilde’s bone structure really lends itself to the Evil Queen. She looks like she was taken straight from a film. The make up artists and costume designers did a great job on her. As for Beauty in the Beast, we thought they’d have Bridges in make up to play the Prince in monster form but this will work. He does have the flowing hair to play the part. Cruz on the other hand, doesn’t look like Belle. Her hair is too tousled. It should be tighter up top (picky we know).

We wouldn’t have even thought of Latifah as Ursula from The Little Mermaid, but she’s another perfect fit. The background is a bit cartoonish for the photo but it works!

Olivia Wilde Denies Lara Croft Tomb Raider Reports

We thought the rumors surrounding Tomb Raider and Lara Croft were done for! The last time the character hit the big screen was in 2003 when Angelina Jolie appeared in Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. The film bored us to tears, just as the first one did in 2001 but Hollywood still wants to reboot it. The latest news about the impending film centers on Tron Legacy star Olivia Wilde, who’s supposedly up for the part of the new Lara.

If you do want Wilde to play the character you’re out of luck because it’s not happening. According to OnTheRedCarpet, her reps deny that she’s taking on the role previously played by Jolie. Wilde joins the ranks of Megan Fox as another star who’s debunked their attachment to the project. Who’s putting this info out there?

We guess we can understand the attraction to the Tomb Raider series. “The character holds the one Guinness World Record for “most recognized female video game character, and another one for “most official real life stand-ins.” Take that Sonya Blade from Mortal Kombat!

It’s that time of the year again, Vanity Fair is about to release their annual Hollywood issue. We have to admit, this year’s stars are a lot more interesting and diverse than the group from 2010. It features everyone from Ryan Reynolds to Noomi Rapace. The majority of the three-tier cover models include young Hollywood favorites and one legend who managed to sneak in between the pages. In order of appearance, the cover features: Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, James Franco, Jennifer Lawrence, Anthony Mackie, Olivia Wilde, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Robert Duvall, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones, Garrett Hedlund and Noomi Rapace.

Somehow they convinced the talented Robert Duvall to sit in the background while these young, whipper snappers grab all the attention. We’re not sure how that happened but it did. Another important question to ask is, where is Tom Hardy? What about Ryan Gosling? And why is Joseph Gordon Levitt just now making an appearance?

There are so many questions and not enough answers. Who do you think has been omitted from this prestigious group?

Olivia Wilde Joins Chris Pine in Welcome to People

The cast for the feature debut of writer-producer-turned-director Alex Kurtzman is really coming together. THR is reporting that Olivia Wilde (who worked with the director on Cowboys & Aliens) has signed on to star in Welcome to People alongside Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks.

The premise of Welcome to People centers on “a man who must deliver $150,000 in cash to an alcoholic sister he didn’t know he had after the death of their father. Without telling her who he is, the guy also gets involved in the life of her angry 12-year old son.” Pine stars as the man, while Banks plays his drunk sibling. Wilde has been cast in the role of Hannah, the girlfriend of Pine’s character.

Kurtzman co-wrote the screenplay for the film with his longtime collaborator Roberto Orci, who will also help him produce via their DreamWorks-based Paper Products company.

Olivia Wilde is seriously everywhere. She’s come along way since her stint on the short-lived Fox drama “Skin.” Does anyone else remember that show? It lasted for like six episodes back in 2003. No? Just us?

Olivia Wilde, Charlie Hunnam, Eric Bana Join Kin

Olivia Wilde is having a very busy week. Her latest film Tron Legacy opens in theaters nationwide today, and we’ve just gotten word that she’s landed a new acting gig. According to Variety, Wilde is in negotiations to star in the thriller Kin, alongside Eric Bana and “Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam.

The premise of Kin centers on a desperate brother and sister (Bana and Wilde) who are on the run and “collide with the holiday homecoming of a troubled ex-boxer (Hunnam).” We’re pretty sure at some point during the film Wilde and Hunnam’s characters will hook up. It’s written in the stars. The screenplay was written Zach Dean and the film will be produced by Gary Levinsohn and Shelly Clippard.

Kin will be directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky who previously helmed The Counterfeiters. We’re actually interested in seeing this movie. Not because the plot is amazing but because we love Hunnam and we want to see him in more stuff on the big screen. Remember 10 years ago after “Undeclared” he was all the rage and then he just dropped off the face of the earth before resurfacing on “Sons of Anarchy?” Give him a chance Hollywood.

Tron Legacy: Movie Review

After 28 long years, Disney has decided to make a follow up to the 1982 film Tron. Even though the original wasn’t a box office hit, it spawned a very successful video game, and the film eventually became a cult classic. The sequel Tron Legacy is a father-son story that takes all the things we loved about the first movie and adds modernized special effects, a kick-ass soundtrack, and of course the return of Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn. The Plot:

In the film, Kevin Flynn has been trapped in the world of Tron for 20 plus years living on the opposite end of a spectrum from his creation and nemesis Clu. On the outside world, his grown son Sam (Hedlund) stumbles upon a gateway into Tron and tries to release him. Aided by his trusted friend Quorra (Wilde), the duo embark on a life-and-death journey to escape the cyber universe that has become far more advanced and dangerous since the last time we saw it.

The Good:

Score: The music in Tron Legacy is amazing! Daft Punk brings their A-game to the soundtrack by infusing it with tunes that make you feel like you’re a part of the Tron world. Thanks to the score, some of the action sequences look like mini music videos and I mean that in a good way.
It’s a Stand Alone Film: If you haven’t seen the original Tron you won’t get lost with the sequel. The majority of the connection between the two movies is explained within the first 10 minutes so nothing will go over your head. There are some smaller things that die hard fans will pick up on, but if you’re new to the series those things won’t bother you. It’s an overall entertaining film that could be seen as a sequel or a solo adventure.
Special Effects: Just like Avatar last year, Tron Legacy is a stand out when it comes to special effects. The world of Tron is taken to a whole other level. It’s sharp, it’s crisp, and it’s beautiful. It’s a visual feast.
3D: Tron Legacy achieves something rare: it has good 3D. Not only is the 3D exceptional, but it actually makes sense for the story. It’s not a distraction or a gimmick.

The So-So:

Clu’s Face: Earlier I praised the special effects on this film because they deserve it. They’re truly a step above anything else I’ve seen this year but there’s one problem — Clu. Clu is modeled and reanimated as a 35 year old version of Kevin Flynn. At first glance this is an amazing feat, until you look at his mouth. Sometimes his lips don’t sync up correctly with his words and in certain instances his eyes look beady and soulless. It was impressive but not perfect.

The Bad:

Sam Flynn: Sam isn’t flushed out at all. Garrett Hedlund is a decent actor but the material he had to work with was lackluster. Sam is your stereotypical rich boy, who’s the heir to a billion dollar corporation but doesn’t want to be a part of it. He obviously has abandonment issues, and he comes across as somewhat of an ungrateful brat. It’s hard to care or root for him because he’s so generic.
Tron Himself: The actual character Tron, who’s played by Bruce Boxleitner doesn’t have a huge part in this movie. The time he does spend on screen is inconsistent with the film’s story, which makes his addition seem like an afterthought. Without giving too much away, let’s just say he’s there one minute, the next he’s not, and we have no idea what happened in between.

Overall:

Tron Legacy is one of the most entertaining films I’ve seen all year. It has great visuals, amazing 3D, a memorable soundtrack, and the always awesome Jeff Bridges. Go see it!

Rating: 8.5/10

Daft Punk Derezzed Music Video for Tron Legacy

Today is Tuesday and you know what that means — new Tron Legacy stuff! This week the focus has been put on the soundtrack which features new music from electronic/dance duo Daft Punk. They’ve released a music video for their song “Derezzed,” which debuted this morning on MTV. Like all of Daft Punk’s tunes this is a definite club banger. Check it out…

Official Synopsis:

TRON is a 3D high-tech adventure set in a digital world that’s unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (GARRETT HEDLUND), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (JEFF BRIDGES), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant (OLIVIA WILDE), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

This is easily our favorite song on the soundtrack and the video doesn’t disappoint. It’s great that Olivia Wilde took some time out of her busy schedule to shoot a cameo for it too. Tron Legacy opens in theaters nationwide on December 17.

The Next Three Days: Movie Review

Oscar winning screenwriter and director Paul Haggis returns to theaters this weekend with his latest film, The Next Three Days. It stars Russell Crowe as a desperate man who’s willing to do whatever it takes to reunite his wife with their family, the only problem is — she’s in prison. From that premise alone you can imagine all the craziness that will ensue. Is The Next Three Days a worthy follow up to Haggis’ previous works? Find out in our review…

The Plot:

The Next Three Days centers on John (Crowe) and Lara Brennan (Banks) and his undeniable quest for her freedom. After having an argument with her employer, Lara is arrested the day after her boss’s dead body is found in a parking lot. All of the evidence points to her as the killer and she’s sentenced to serve some serious time in prison. Her husband John feels as if the system has given up on finding the real murderer so he decides to take matters into his own hands. After extensive research, interviews, and hours of strategizing, John sets out to do the unthinkable — break his wife out of prison.

The Good:

Elizabeth Banks: Banks is mostly known for her comedic roles in films like The 40 Year Old Virgin, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and Role Models. She barely dips into other genres but when she does she’s amazing as proven by her performance in this film. She does a great job of making you feel the frustration that her character is going through with her heartbreaking performance.
Trial and Error: The one great thing about the story is how it shows one man’s journey through trial and error. John is trying to break his wife out of prison and that’s no easy feat. You see him going on YouTube and asking around to see how he can get fake passports, how he can make a “bump” key, and how he can safely get out of the country within a certain amount of time. He visibly works for the knowledge. It doesn’t come to him overnight. It’s realistic.

The Bad:

The Tone: It’s hard to tell if this is a hardcore drama, a thriller, or a subtle action film. The movie starts off with a comedic scene, and throughout jokes continue to appear when they’re really not needed. Most of the material came from the cops who were investigating John. Instead of working they were busting each other’s balls and saying snarky comments. We thought this was a murder investigation?
The Pace: The film seemed a bit long in the tooth. It runs at about 122 minutes and a good 20 of those could have been cut out.
The Supporting Characters: The supporting characters are not developed well. All of the cops blended in to one. They all seemed like extras from “NYPD Blue,” with the main offender being the lead investigator (Lennie James) who was pulling off his best James McDaniel impersonation. Also, there’s a storyline with John’s dad, played by the great Brian Dennehy that they don’t really explore.

Overall:

The Next Three Days isn’t a horrible movie, but its definitely not one of Paul Haggis’ best. As a whole it doesn’t keep you on the edge of your seat but the final act delivers some good action and decent suspense. This is a definite hit or miss.
