With the release of Scream 4, this weekend we will surely see some debate about what are the best and worst Scream sequels. In the scheme of things, Scream only has four movies, which in a horror franchise is small potatoes – if a horror film works it usually gets a numbers of sequels and nowadays reboots (and sometimes sequels or prequels to those). For those that think this is something new, just look at the old Universal monster movies. They were made until the well ran dry and then they appeared with Abbot and Costello. But what’s the worst of the more recent sequel-crazy horror films? Take a look…

He’s baaaacckk! Samuel Bayer brings us the re-imagining of the infamous Freddy Krueger played by Jackie Earle Haley in A Nightmare at Elm Street. For those of you who don’t know, the fantasy horror film is about the icon serial killer who kills people in their dreams, resulting in their real death in reality. Another more off the wall horror film coming out this week is Tom Six’s drama, The Human Centipede. The film is about a retired surgeon (Dieter Laser) who has a sick fantasy of making a “human centipede”.
If you prefer violence over horror, check out Daniel Barber’s crime thriller, Harry Brown starring Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer, and Liam Cunningham. Probably one of the darkest films of the bunch.
Check out what’s coming out this week:

This year we’ll see the release of Platinum Dunes and Samuel Bayer‘s take on A Nightmare on Elm Street. Unlike a lot of remakes, especially from the horror genre, this movie doesn’t bother me as much as the rest. From the little that we’ve seen the film will take a cue from the original 1984 version, which was a genuine horror masterpiece. A video has been released that features the creative forces behind the movie discussing their take on the Freddy tale.

MySpace has just released the new teaser trailer for director Samuel Bayer’s new adaptation (which I’m beginning to think is more of a direct copy with a few scenes added) of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Fans of Wes Craven’s 80′s classic by the same name will note that they have a lot of throw backs to the original film. In fact, they’re not even throw backs, some shots are almost directly copies from the original film (anyone else being reminded of Gus Van Sant‘s Psycho right now?). If anything that tells you how well the first film still stands up today, but also makes you wonder about the remake.
You may notice that there is a character missing from the trailer. Kellan Lutz’s character, Dean isn’t from the original film, although maybe he’s taking the place of Johnny Depp‘s former character Glen Lantz? Nancy and Marge Thompson are back again from the original cast along with another of familiar faces.

Last week we debuted the first photo of Jackie Earle Haley as the infamous child killer Freddy Krueger in the remake of 1984′s A Nightmare on Elm Street. Today we have another visual treat for you in the form of the film’s first official poster. Once again Krueger’s face is shrouded in darkness and there’s not much to see. I really think the creators are trying to keep his face under wraps until the film’s opening nears. Even at the Warner Bros Comic-Con panel his face was obscure in all the footage that they showed. Hmm….
Check out the full poster after the jump!
