Seeking Justice: Movie Review

It seems like Nicolas Cage‘s celebrity lifestyle and personal problems with the IRS require him to act only in critically-thrashed, big-budget movies. Sure, every now and then he’ll pick a good project where 80s and 90s Nic Cage shines through; unfortunately, Seeking Justice isn’t one of those projects. But it’s not all bad. Helmed by director Roger Donaldson, Seeking Justice is the story of a tortured husband who avenges his wife’s rapist by hiring a clan of vigilantes. Donaldson, an action pro, distracts the audience with chase scenes and gun fights, and eventually delivers a somewhat entertaining action movie.

The Plot:

Will Gerard (Nicolas Cage) is a high school English teach whose cellist wife (January Jones) is raped near their New Orleans home. At the hospital, Will is approached by a mysterious man named Simon (Guy Pearce), who promises him closure, revenge, and justice at no cost. Simon and his organization of vigilantes avenge Will’s wife, but things get complicated when Simon asks for a favor in return.

The Good:

Action: Seeking Justice starts off pretty intense, with Cage agonizing over his wife’s pain and a mysterious man showing up out of nowhere offering him revenge. It doesn’t make a lot of sense, but it’s suspenseful enough to keep you interested; that goes on for about two thirds of the movie, with chase scenes, Cage racing around the streets of New Orleans, and mysterious run-ins with vigilantes. Unfortunately, the plot becomes so predictable that the action loses its energy.
Story: Somewhere in between all of the mess, there’s a good story here about citizens who try to take back their city. These New Orleans citizens don’t feel like they are being protected by their law enforcement so they are forced to watch out for themselves and seek justice in other ways.

The Bad:

Nic Cage: It’s hard to watch Nic Cage without cringing a little bit. He’s just not someone who can play a normal English school teacher and get away with it. Maybe we know too much about him, or maybe he just can’t act normal, but most of the time he’s on-screen he seems rushed to get to the next scene or bored with the material.
Plot: Although there’s a good story to be told in Seeking Justice, what we get isn’t nearly as good. What starts off as a story about a man trying to avenge his wife’s rapist, turns into a messy movie about investigative journalism, corruption, and rabbits. There’s occasional surprises in the plot, but after a while everything become predictable.

Overall:

Seeking Justice is a movie that wants to be mysterious and complicated, but all we get is a formulaic action movie with Nic Cage as the male lead. There’s some entertaining action, but not enough worth a trip to the movies.

Rating: 4.5/10

Nicolas Cage Won’t Play Nicolas Cage in Action No.1

If you’re Nicolas Cage, perhaps the hardest role to play is yourself. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it seems that Cage turned down a role as himself in Action No.1, the Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant scripted film about his stolen copy of the first issue of Superman (which is worth $1.5 Million dollars). The plan would be to make a nerd heist picture revolving around Cage’s mint comic. But sans-Cage part of the fun of the movie would be gone.

Nicolas Cage came onto the scene hesitant to use his family connections (he’s a Coppola) to get into the business, but by the mid-80′s, he established himself as a fearless actor who was just as likely to turn in serious work as appear as a walking cartoon. By the 90′s – post Oscar – he was happy to appear in big budget studio movies, though as he kept working the edge of his weirdness receded into the background. Still, he could be counted on for a good freak-out now and again. Check out this NSFW compilation:

At this point he’s played a lot of his tricks, and audiences have been less likely to turn out – Cage has had a number of films go straight to video recently, and the latest Ghost Rider film didn’t exactly light the world on fire. Which makes his decision to pass a little sad. There’s no way it could have the pop brilliance of John Malkovich‘s turn in Being John Malkovich, and perhaps he’s seen the Night at the Museum movies, so he could be wary of Lennon and Garant. Still, what better way to show your fans that you get the joke than to play a version of yourself? The other side of that is the possibility by engaging in that sort of self awareness (which – to be fair – he did recently on Saturday Night Live) you distract from your art.

Lionsgate has Action No.1, and without Cage it may die on the vine. Then again, there could be some fun in casting another actor to play Nicolas Cage. Perhaps Andy Samberg?

Saturday Night Live Parodies The Artist With Jean Dujardin’s Help

Though Zooey Deschanel was the host of this week’s Saturday Night Live, she was upstaged by two of its guests: Jean Dujardin and Nicolas Cage. Both came to promote and mock their movies, and it made for one of the all around best SNL’s in a while (though the musical guests were a low point). Dujardin, who would win the BAFTA for best actor the next day, came to do a musical number, while Cage went to the update desk to talk about his latest Ghost Rider film. Check it out…

The writers at SNL can be a bit nerdy, so it seems they gave a shout out to Carl Theodor Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc – one of the great silent films but hardly something that many of its viewers would have seen. That said, it’s hard to tell what Andy Samberg is exactly riffing on. Still, it’s a charming sketch.

And on Update, Nicolas Cage plays it perfectly straight-faced against Samberg’s impression of him. It’s funny and shows that he’s in on the joke without being too cutsey about it. The two make a good comic team together, and- unlike Mark Wahlberg‘s appearance on the show – it never feels like its trying too hard.

On top of that, Deschanel did a sketch with Abby Elliot where Eliot did Deschanel to Deschanel. Like I said, it was a good week for SNL.

The Dunder Mifflin paper company from NBC’s The Office is now becoming real paper! In a plot that sounds straight out of, well, The Office, NBC has just signed a deal with a major supplies store, in order to give their paper business a kick by producing Dunder Mifflin paper. We’ve also got a photo of Nicolas Cage on the cover of a piece of unusual material (which, considering it’s Cage, isn’t that unusual at all), and news on Bryan Singer‘s new job (hint: it involves a TV show about a big green man who is neither the Incredible Hulk or the Jolly Green Giant).

Dunder Mifflin Paper: The Office‘s paper company Dunder Mifflin is branching out, into the real world. NBCUniversal has just signed a deal to license the name of The Office‘s fictional paper company to Quill.com. This was mainly done to help said company’s failing paper business because, well no one’s buying paper anymore. The niche paper will include well-known slogans from this hilarious TV show that will surely make it difficult for hard core fans to resist.
New Job for Bryan Singer: Director of X-Men and Superman Returns Bryan Singer will be bringing The Munsters to the masses. Singer will direct and executive produce a reboot of the 1960s comedy for NBC.
Nicolas Cage Textbook: Nicolas Cage isn’t only a movie star, he’s also the face of the study of life. Brian Williams Gets Interrupted on Live TV: Brian Williams’ show “Nightly News” was interrupted earlier this week, by a fire alarm. Just a few seconds into his first story (about American Airlines’ bankruptcy), a fire alarm went off in the studio. At first, Williams tried to ignore it, but when once he realized the alarm wasn’t shutting down, he told viewers, “You’ll forgive us, we have a fire alarm announcement going on here.” Take a look at the video below, and see how Williams handles the whole situation like a pro.

Sometimes, with the deluge of entertainment news that hits us daily, a few crumbs fall through the cracks. And like a mighty vacuum of information justice, our news roundup is here to scoop up any little nuggets we may have missed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has picked up the spec script for Wild Guns, a post-Civil War western described as a cross between Tombstone and Sherlock Holmes, in which Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday “team-up to rescue the daughter of Sitting Bull, who has been kidnapped by a powerful Shaman with mysterious powers who is terrorizing the Western plains.” No word yet on whether or not they do so in a van called the Mystery Machine, and if Sitting Bull is really Old Man Withers from the local haunted amusement park.

Always thought of Quentin Tarantino’s films as true art? Well, so does artist Tim Doyle, who, according to Unreality Magazine, has created a series of prints capturing moments from each of QT’s films. Unfortunately, these aren’t for sale, but they are awesome.

Um, I guess Harry Potter fans and readers will find this April Fool’s gag funny?

Face/Off Duo Nicolas Cage And John Travolta Looking To Reunite In More Bad Films

Hey, remember back in the day (translation, 1997), when Nicolas Cage and John Travolta starred in a little flick called Face/ Off, in which they play sworn enemies who switch each others’ faces and take over each others’ lives? And remember how both actors had so much charm and chops that they totally pulled it off and saved the film and its ridiculous premise?

You do? Too bad. Prepare to be disappointed, because the duo is set to go at it again, and maybe again after that, and the charm/ chops level have gone the way of both actors’ hairlines.

The AV Club reports that Cage, who has apparently decided to star in every single bad movie offered to him, no matter how ridiculous his character’s hairpiece may be, and Travolta are considering co-starring in Shrapnel:

“The story concerns a former Bosnian soldier who gets his revenge on the American who wounded him by inviting him along on a friendly hunting trip, where it’s soon revealed he’s hunting the deadliest prey of all: Elk. Or, no—man. Man, we mean.”

While that seems almost tame by both actors’ recent standards, dig the scoop on the other movie they might be making together, Sea Trial:

“The thriller involves a pair of couples embarking on a romantic yachting trip, which quickly turns into a “cruise through hell” (according to the book’s cover) when one couple turns out to be not who they seem. So basically, Cage and Travolta are looking to try and kill each other some more.”

But hey, we really can’t complain—as long as we keep paying for movies like Drive Angry and that awful remake of The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3, Hollywood is going to keep shoving these guys our way.

Interview: Nicolas Cage for Drive Angry 3D

Nicolas Cage is mad as hell and he’s not going to take it anymore. The dedicated and sometimes eccentric star appears in a new film opening this weekend called Drive Angry 3D. The title pretty much sums up the premise of the film, which centers on a hardened ex-con hell bent on finding and killing the man who murdered his daughter and kidnapped his grandchild. We recently had the opportunity to attend the Los Angeles press day for the movie, where Cage spoke openly about his love of fast cars, stunts, guns, and more importantly poetry. Yes, the Oscar winner never ceases to amaze. Check out our interview…

What were your initial thoughts on the script, what attracted you?

Nicolas Cage: Well, initially what I was attracted to was the idea that I was going to get my eye shot out. For the movie Season of the Witch, I wanted to get my eye shot out with a bow and arrow, and the producers didn’t go for it. So when Patrick Lussier said to me and just handed to me on a silver platter you’re going to get your eye shot out in a movie, I don’t know why but I just immediately said yes, I’m in.

I was also uncomfortable with the script and I was just going through this phase in my life where I learned that if something makes you uncomfortable or fearful in any way, within reason that’s exactly what you should confront. So it was an experiment on that level that I should confront the violence in the movie because it had been a long time since I’d made a violent movie. It occurred to me that violence is for better or worse necessary, it is part of the human condition and that we all have violent thoughts within us and go through frustration and anger when someone we love is hurt. So I thought why not make a character that could help us express those feelings vicariously rather than go and do it somewhere in real life. Thankfully, most of us don’t act out on our violence but we go to movies because it’s part of life. A character like Milton helps express that.

What kind of challenges did the 3D present to you as an actor? Also, how does it enhance your professional skills?

NC: Well, I was very excited at first to see what I could do with the format. You’re right, it’s my first live action movie in 3D. I was like a kid in a candy store and I wanted to see if I could get my tongue into the fourth row of the audience in one scene. By the second week, it became very clear to me that it wasn’t that different than making any other movie with a 35mm camera. That is really a credit to Patrick Lussier because he is a pioneer of the new wave of 3D. He really sorted out all the bugs that might occur with it on his first film, My Bloody Valentine, with 3D. He knew where to put the camera at any time so that the actors didn’t blow out the effect because you can do that very easily. If you line up in such a way, you blow out the effect and it’s caused a lot of headaches for many filmmakers but not Patrick so he was very confident. He knew exactly where to put the camera and we really got the movie done quite quickly as a result of his expertise.

What’s the visceral thrill of getting behind the wheel of a muscle car, and what’s in your garage?

NC: Well, what’s in my garage is a Dodge Ram 3500 Laramie. I have a pickup truck. I like it. It’s a diesel Cummings engine which is the same engine they use in the trains and it’s actually really good for the environment. Unlike the hybrids which so many people think are good for the environment, you actually have to dump those batteries and it actually pollutes the environment so the diesel truck is a better way to go. Now, back to the movie, I love cars. There’s no secret that the automobile and I have had a pretty good relationship. I’m a good driver. I know what I’m doing in a car. I thought it was just a real opportunity to drive as fast as I wanted and not get a speeding ticket, and that’s what I did. When I drive in a movie it’s not unlike when I act. I go into a trance. I don’t really have skills but I just know what they want me to do and somehow it all works itself out. The only time it’s a problem for me is when somebody else is in the car like Ms. Amber Heard and then I start getting nervous that if something happens to them that I’m responsible and then I’m not quite as effective.

How fast did you go?

NC: Well, Amber’s still raising her eyebrow at me because I said that I’ve been 180 miles per hour on the 405 freeway on a motorcycle and she doesn’t believe me but it’s a true story. I did it coming home from work at 3 in the morning on another movie I made about cars called Gone in 60 Seconds. I bought a Yamaha-1 and I was doing 180 miles per hour home on the 405 and that’s really, really crazy but I did it. In this movie I went about 70 miles per hour at any given moment because we had cameras on the car and that’s about as fast as I could push it with cameras on the car mounted down onto the car. But still, it was mostly me driving and going into oncoming traffic. Those were some pretty fun days.

Did you have to remind yourself not to take this movie so seriously?

NC: I mean, even today the way we’re getting a chance to talk a little bit about it, I think you can see that anyone involved in the movie didn’t take it too seriously. There was a real sense of absurdest fun about it knowing full well that the movie was going to be over the top and extreme and sort of celebrating the fun of that. But having said that even still, there is a heart in the movie and the heart is generated by Amber Heard’s performance and the relationship between her and my character because you see that it’s not really a romance. It’s something even more affectionate that goes into a familial place where it’s almost like an older brother or a paternal situation where there’s kindness towards one another, even though there are these two whacked out outlaws on the road. They still have feelings for one another and I like that aspect of it as well. A good movie has to work on more than one level.

You talk about raising more questions than answers, when it comes to Milton. Do you have answers? What has Milton done, how long he’s been in hell, how did he get out?

NC: Yeah, yeah, I have some answers that I will keep to myself but for me, without saying too much about Milton because I want to keep him in that mystery zone, and he is like a ghost. He’s a living dead man. Whatever a ghost would be like, if a ghost walked into a room, it might be like a vacuum, it might suck all the air out of the room, it might just be very still and you’d probably wonder what is it thinking. I was trying to find ways of kind of giving that aura to Milton at any moment, at least that was the challenge I’d had in my own mind while I was filming it. That’s what I wanted to convey, a kind of otherness to Milton that makes you think that he’s actually motivated by something more than just anger. The anger is from when he was alive. When he was alive, he was probably listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Buddy Holly, but after he broke out of hell, it’s all just wind chimes and Ravi Shankhar. No lyrics. Absolutely no lyrics.

You have great chemistry with William Fichtner, who plays The Accountant. Was the rapport there at the beginning?

NC: Well, I really enjoyed working with every member in this cast. Billy Burke, William Fichtner, Amber Heard, all of them lent their own unique style and sense of humor. One of my favorite lines in Drive Angry is from one of the supporting players, Joe Crest towards the end of the movie. He says, “We’re going to live forEVER!!” That was the line that made me crack up the loudest. I laughed out loud with my son and I haven’t stopped laughing since and it was last night. But his delivery was hilarious. So yeah, I hope there’s another Drive Angry not only because of William Fichtner but Billy Burke and Amber as well. Great time working with them and Patrick.

How dangerous were the guns used in the movie?

NC: Well, any time you have guns on the set, they’re dangerous. You have to be careful. We all know what happened to Brandon Lee. You always have to be vigilant about it and remember that you’re around explosive substances. But I find that I work with very thorough stunt people and gun wranglers and they know what they’re doing and I’m also very vigilant and I’m proud to say that no one’s really ever gotten hurt in one of my scenes.

There’s a moment in the film where you drink beer from a person’s skull. Where did that come from?

NC: Believe it or not, I was reading a lot of Walt Whitman at the time, our poet laureate, Leaves of Grass and somewhere in Leaves of Grass Whitman just says in a stanza “drinking mead from a skull.” I thought to myself, “I like that, I would like to find a way to drink beer from a skull in this movie.” And the reason being kind of partly because I wanted Milton to have this kind of Celtic and Wotanic kind of modern primitive style about him. And also I wanted to see if there could be any way in my presentation of the skull, and I put a lot of thought into that, even did a few takes of it almost like a commercial, a beer commercial to find a way to make the beer slosh out of the eye in such a way that my cup runneth over and have it look really inviting and appetizing and make people in the audience go, “Wow, I know it sounds crazy, but I’d really kind of like to drink beer from someone’s skull right now.” That was the challenge.

You’ve been acting for a long time, what have you noticed about how movie audiences’ tastes have changed?

NC: You know, I haven’t really to be perfectly honest with you. I am excited that science-fiction movies have been included in the Oscars now because they’ve opened the Best Picture category up to 10 movies. So now movies which have every right to be there like District 9 which was arguably the best movie in my opinion of that year. It was like Apartheid told through the eyes of science-fiction, are now included. So that’s in my opinion positive. But again, I think that some of the most inventive and creative and imaginative filmmaking out there is science fiction when it’s done intelligently and horror when it’s done intelligently.

Drive Angry 3D: Movie Review

The duo that brought us My Bloody Valentine 3D is headed to theaters once again with an homage to seventies action movies. Drive Angry 3D stars Nicolas Cage as somewhat of a supernatural renegade who has one thing on his mind. His weapons of choice include his car, his gun, and his beautiful sidekick Piper (Amber Heard). He’s a man on a mission, he’s pissed, and he’s behind the wheel. Check out our review…

The Plot:

John Milton (Cage) is an ex-con hellbent on finding his missing grandchild and a cult leader named Jonah King (Burke) who murdered his daughter. He joins forces with a small town waitress named Piper (Heard), who’s got a nice ride and a no nonsense attitude. While tracking King down the duo are followed by a mysterious man called The Accountant (Fichtner) who has one thing on his mind, Milton.

The Good:

William Fichtner: As the deliciously evil “accountant,” Fichtner stole the show with his entertaining performance. The character could have easily come across as one-note but everything he said and did was gold. You can’t take your eyes off of him. He’s a villain you love to hate.
Amber Heard: At first glance you might think that her character is a bimbo with no personality, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Piper is a kick-ass chick — literally. She never yearns to be saved by Cage’s character, in fact she saves him once or twice herself. She handles her business and she’s not in the film for the sole purpose of being eye candy.
The Action: Old school action was definitely used here. As you might suspect there were multiple car crashes, lots of explosions, and more than a fair share of gun play. The best thing about the action is that the majority of it was done using practical effects aka the old fashioned way.
The Humor: One of the reasons Drive Angry 3D is entertaining is because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. There are a lot of great moments that are funny not because of how they’re written but how they’re acted out. The characters themselves are so interesting and unique that they make the most violent or dangerous situation light.

The Bad:

CGI: There weren’t a lot of CGI scenes in the movie, as I stated earlier but there was one in particular that stood out like a sore thumb. I don’t want to give the exact scene away, but the one in question was very cartoonish. Considering this was a moderate to low budget movie, I’m not surprised that they couldn’t afford the best effects in that area.

Overall:

Drive Angry 3D was a surprisingly fun and entertaining film. Amongst all of the movies opening in theaters this week, I’d definitely give this one the golden ticket.

Rating: 8/10

Nicolas Cage Says Ghost Rider 2 Will Play Up Supernatural Elements

Nicolas Cage has been busy promoting his latest feature Drive Angry 3D, and we had the opportunity to talk to him during the Los Angeles press day for the film. While there, the actor spoke about another supernatural, motor driven project he’s been working on — Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. He revealed that he and directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have created some amazing stuff that will take the Ghost Rider franchise to a whole new (supernatural) level…

On working with hands on directors like Neveldine and Taylor:

Cage: It’s really fresh and original. Mark is like a stuntman, camera operator, director all rolled into one. He’s literally risking his life to get shots. On rollerblades, on bungee cords, he’s even patented the rollerblading stuff because no one else in the business is doing that. And then Brian Taylor is just a walking encyclopedia about movies. We’ve had great conversations about all kinds of films.

Cage says that Taylor was the reason he wanted to play the character again and they’ve collectively decided to push the envelope. Ghost Rider is a supernatural being and this movie will showcase that.

Cage: He’s the reason I played Ghost Rider. He encouraged me to be the Ghost Rider as well as John Blaze. We got up to some stuff as Ghost Rider that the two of us designed together that I think is really going to mess with people’s minds. It’s not going to be like any other comic book movie you’ve seen. We keep stressing that Ghost Rider is the most supernatural superhero of all and that’s going to really come out in this movie.

We wonder what they have in store for us? We’ll all have to wait and find out when the film hits theaters on February 17, 2012.

The Weekend Box Office Results-Our Take

After it was all said and done The Green Hornet opened slightly below my prediction to open at #1 with $33.7M, while The Dilemma bombed with $17.8M, and True Grit held strong at #3 with $10.9M.

Now on to the rest of the top 10…

The enormous theater expansions for both The Black Swan & The King’s Speech helped both films respective box office takes soar pushing them past my box office predictions and moving The Fighter down two spots. A slew of holiday leftovers were able to post modest declines as Yogi Bear held strong with a small decline as it was the only real option for adults to take their children to, while Little Fockers/Tron continued to under-perform.

I believed Country Strong would have held a little better at the box office due to Gwyneth Paltrow’s appearance on SNL as well as her rumored duet with Cee-Lo(which did not occur) of his song “Forget You,” but in this case it did not.

Rounding out the rest was Nicolas Cage’s The Season Of The Witch which tumbled in its second weekend but was still able to manage to finish inside the top 10 . This was above my prediction that it would it would fall out of the top ten completely, showing that people still want to see Cage in films ,and hopefully his upcoming Drive Angry will perform somewhat better.

Nicolas Cage Says Ghost Rider 2 Will Have New Origin Sequence

This weekend Nicolas Cage will hit theaters with his latest film Season of the Witch, but while out promoting it all anyone wanted to talk about was Ghost Rider. The actor is currently shooting the sequel to the 2007 Marvel comic adaptation that will be called Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance. According to Cage, the follow up will be filled with surprises including a new origin story.

When the sequel was initially announced some thought it would be a reboot that would feature a completely different actor and story. That’s partially true. Cage has returned for the role but he explains that filmmakers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have put a new twist on the character.

“They’re not like anybody else I’ve worked with. They do things with the camera that are just extraordinary.” He adds, “They’re brand new. The director’s on rollerblades and hanging from wires with the camera, holding on to the motorcycle and it’s going to be really wild. (It’s going to be) very different. A completely new experience and that’s how the directors choose to see it. I mean there’s even a new origin sequence.”

The first Ghost Rider became a success by the skin of its teeth so it will need all the inventive filmmaking methods it can handle. Spirit of Vengeance is scheduled to hit theaters on February 17, 2012.

International Drive Angry 3D Trailer

If you enjoyed the over the top violence and speed in the domestic trailer for Drive Angry 3D, you’ll love what the international version has to offer. Over at BleedingCool, they gave us the heads up on a U.K trailer for the film that features more vengeful acts from Nicolas Cage that weren’t necessarily shown in the previous version. Check it out…

Official Synopsis:

Milton, a hardened felon has broken out of hell for one last chance at redemption. Intent on stopping a vicious cult who murdered his daughter, he has three days to stop them before they sacrifice her baby beneath a full moon. He’s joined by Piper – a young, sexy waitress who liberates her ex-boyfriend’s cherry-red muscle car in order to help Milton. Now, the two of them are hot on the trail of the deadly leader of the cult, Jonah King, who believes it is his destiny to use the baby to unleash hell on earth.

But the bloodthirsty cult is the least of Milton’s problems. The police are after him too. And worse, an enigmatic killer known only as “The Accountant” – who has been sent by the Devil to retrieve Milton and deliver him back to hell. With wicked cunning and hypnotic savagery, the Accountant will relentlessly pursue Milton at high speed across the country until his mission is accomplished. Fueled by high octane and pure rage, Milton must use his anger to go beyond all human limits to avenge his daughter’s murder, before his last chance at redemption is revoked.

Drive Angry 3D hits theaters on February 11, 2011.
