Well, after months of breathless rumors and conjecture about the film, the first bit of Avengers artwork was released today. The film, set for release on May 4, 2012 and starring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, features a supergroup of superheroes saving the earth and learning to work together despite their differences and blah blah blah. What’s more amazing is the horribly cheesy leaked poster, which looks like something you’d find painted on the side of a van in circa 1983 east L.A.

Isn’t it convenient that this story broke AFTER I wrote my article on Marvel and their casting problems? I wonder if my opinion had an effect? Probably not, but it’s good to dream. Last month we reported that Samuel L. Jackson would not appear in any of the upcoming Marvel films as the character Nick Fury. Fury, whom in the Ultimate Avengers comic universe is modeled after Jackson, is a S.H.I.E.L.D. superior officer who plays an integral role in the Avengers operation. Many fans and Hollywood insiders speculated that the reason Jackson wouldn’t appear in any of the Avenger themed films had to do with Marvel’s restricted budget.
Whatever the problem was it’s history now, because according to Variety Jackson’s back and he’s all about Fury!

Emily Blunt may be a no go for Iron Man 2. It’s sad and it sucks, but thats the nature of the business. According to Superherohype, Blunt has been offered the role of the leather clad assassin Natasha “Black Widow” Romanoff, but is having some serious scheduling issues. The 25 year old actress is attached to star in the Jack Black vehicle Gulliver’s Travels, which coincidentally starts production around the same time as Iron Man.
