Scream 4: Movie Review

The gang’s all back together with some fresh blood for the fourth installment of the Scream franchise. So vets David Arquette, Courtney Cox, and Neve Campbell have Anthony Anderson, Alison Brie, Adam Brody, Rory Culkin, Marielle Jaffe, Erik Knudson, Hayden Panettiere, Emma Roberts, Marley Shelton and Nico Tortorella in the mix in the slasher/whodunnit franchise that helped bring horror back to the big screen. In the intervening years, there’s been entire ways of horror films, so the movie has to comment on that as well. Did they succeed? Find out more below…

The Plot:

Sidney Prescott (Campbell) heads back home to start her book tour just as a new wave of killings happen that involve someone pulling the same phone and stabbing stunts as before. This reinvigorates Gail Weathers (Cox), who’s been married to Sheriff Dewey (Arquette) and hasn’t been able to figure out what to write next. Sidney stays with her Aunt (Mary McDonald) and Niece Jill (Roberts), and it turns out it’s Jill and her classmates who are to be the next victims of the Ghostface Killer.

The Good:

The Film is aware of its current place: Ten years have past since the last Scream film, and there’s been all those remakes and J-Horror and Torture Porn horror films. The film does have fun acknowledging their presence and how they’ve changed horror films.
The Familiarity: Though it’s been ten years, it is nice to see these familiar faces and how they’ve changed, and when the film focuses on its well established leads it’s enjoyable as a reunion tour sort of film.
The Ending: No spoilers, but what the film builds to is probably the best part about it, as it does have something to say about horror and the modern world.
Alison Brie: As a TV star of both “Mad Men” and “Community”, Brie’s character gets to say the word “fuck” an awful lot, and for someone who usually plays naive and chipper, it’s nice to hear her cuss like a sailor.

The Mixed:

The Violence: Though there’s some problems with this, Wes Craven is not one to shy away from necessary brutality, and a number of the kills have a visceral impact. Knife violence tends to facilitate that. But then one of the death scenes is protracted to the point of both inevitability and banality (there’s no English on the ball, it’s straight down the middle), and one death is punctuated by a terrible joke.
The Opening: The film sets up some mechanics that allow for a playful jab at the film’s ongoing tradition of a pre-credit murder, and some of it hits and some of it misses. But it also goes on to the point that when the point is finally reached it creates (what seems to be) an unintentional schism. By that point it’s hard to care about the violence on screen.

The Bad:

Character Development: It’s hard not to be curious if the collapse of Cox and Arquette’s marriage made it too difficult to play with their character’s relationship, or if it would be too distracting for the audience. Regardless, none of the returning cast members have anything left to do or prove. The closest the film comes is to give Gail a sense of renewed purpose when there’s a new set of killers, but the older characters feel grafted on to another script. The new characters come across as red meat or red herrings. Since it’s hard to care about most of them because we know it’s a Scream movie, by the end it’s only the murder mystery that keeps the story moving.
Doing It For the Money: And to that there seems to be little reason to have a new entry, or if there was one it wasn’t compelling in regards to the old cast members. Craven seems to find his point and purpose in talking about the modern world, but it reminds of a number of four films (like Alien: Resurrection, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull or Lethal Weapon 4) that may be as good or slightly better than the last film (which often ended on a sour note for some), but come across as reunion tours where the only point is to see characters you like doing it again.
Cell Phones: Seriously, you made the joke in the last two movies that people have caller ID. With the way the world, cell phones and the internet has progressed that the film uses phones as it does over the course of the movie is flat-out insulting.

Overall:

There is a perfunctory quality to the film, but it was self-evident for a fourth film coming out ten years after the fact. If you accept going in that this is more mercenary than artistic, there’s fun to be had in the constant name checking of other franchises, and the developments of horror over that decade, even if the film has some slow spots. While there are interesting characters in the first three movies, this feels washed out in comparison. Ultimately the first film didn’t need sequels, and where all three have their pluses and minuses, none deserve to be put in the same class as the first film. That’s just as true about this movie as the others.

Rating: 6/10

For stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette and Director Wes Craven, the Scream franchise isn’t just a movie series, it’s a family. Which is funny for a series based around serial killers, and violence, but when two of the primary cast married each other, there’s going to be a familial vibe. For Scream 4, Craven brought the band back together ten years later for a film that has to work as a sequel and as a film that comments on what’s happened in horror since Scream changed how people saw horror. Which means introducing a new set of teens to the Scream universe .See how they all relate now in the interview below.

Coming Back

After having played Sidney in the original, and having all the rules explained to you, how does it feel to play a returning veteran and having to teach the young kids a thing or two?

Neve Campbell: It was great fun (laughs). I’ve always had fun in these films and playing this character. It was lovely to have a new cast come in. They came in with enthusiasm, they were happy to be a part of it. As actors we didn’t need to teach them the ropes, they’re all professionals and they did a great job.

Having been with this so long, what is like for you on the first day, what is it like for you to come back?

David Arquette: I just love working with these amazing people. We’ve developed this family, not only the fellow actors and director, but the crew – all of this crew – we’ve shared fifteen years together. It’s been ten years since we worked together, but there’s a real family feeling and it really grounds it. When I see Sidney’s character in the movie, there’s a history there and you don’t really have that opportunity in a lot of roles. And then there’s Courtney.. and being married and having a kid and everything, it intensifies the reality and honesty, and that’s my favorite part of acting when you can tap into stuff like that.

Courtney Cox: It felt natural. We’ve had ten more years of experience of acting, I was that much more confident, I’m now a mom, I’m a different person. Being a different person, feeling a different thing, but coming back to your family who know each other, and you feel like you can get right back into it and be better than you were the last time, and do anything. Wes was instrumental in us being together, he was our mentor in relationships and growing up, and to come back and do it again was fun. I became closer to Neve during this movie than the first three, I just adore that girl.

NC: It was nice to get to know each other better, it was lovely.

In movies most people go out and investigate the noise, are you one of those people or do hide and call the cops?

Wes Craven: I own a shotgun.

CC: I investigate.

NC: I do too.

Off screen, have you guys scared the crap out of anyone?

DA: I’ve run around in Gail’s dress – that was pretty frightening if you’ve seen my calves.

Can you talk about how each Scream film centers around Sidney just as it’s commenting on genre? Because it each film you find what Sidney’s journey’s about?

NC: What’s been fun for me about playing Sidney is that I think she’s the eyes of the audience, or the audience is taken with her because they need one core character for the horror and humor to work. For me it’s just been about being straight and honest with her circumstances. Being true to them, playing it that way, and let everyone else buzz around me and do a really fantastic job.

WC: I might start crying. I think Neve embodies everything we’d like to have: substance honestly, lack of pretense, and has put that into her character. Intelligence and refusing to just go along, but also she has illusions about who she was and her family was, which makes it interesting when she finds out that her mother was a “slutbag whore” – isn’t that what he says in the film? So she’s had all these incredible decisions to make about what the reality of her life in a small town is, and that is a fascinating character, and carrying over into this film – somebody related to her mother, her sister’s kid, and all the revelations with that, there’s so much richness in that and I think Neve just has those qualities, plus she can really kick ass. She’s tough and beautiful and wonderful, and I think she embodies what I think is the best of America. She was a championship ice skater in her teens and twenties…

NC: Ballet dancer. I didn’t skate. (laughs)

DA: That was me, Wes.

Courtney, you’ve said the role on Cougar Town is the most fun you’ve ever had to play, and which characteristic do you have form Gale, and from Jules on Cougar Town?

CC: I said that about Cougar Town because it’s the most written for me, it was created for me and I produce it, so I have a lot of say, and the writing is constantly taken from my life. And it’s good to show this goofy side that people don’t know. You’re very free. As far as Gail goes, I definitely have that tough side, Gail’s kind of campy, and I love her relationship with Dewey, and the fact that there together is great. The fact that he’s so earnest and she’s so out to get ahead it’s just an odd pairing, and so are we – we kind of are – so I love playing Gail. It’s probably the most fun because it’s a real character.

Wes Craven

Have you guys seem Wes change since the first film?

WC: I’ve grown more hair since the first film.

DA: Wes, he’s just incredible. He watches Korean horror films in the middle of filming. “Wes what are you doing?” He’s still

NC: Learning.

DA: Though he’s master, he’s still a student, and that’s what makes him so incredible. He’s also a student of nature, human behavior.

NC: Birds.

DA: So it’s been a great experience really growing with each other, and going through life’s changes and it brings a humanness to these movies, and another layer, because there’s films within films and real life and they’re all intermingling.

Wes, I’ve heard you were raised in a strict family and didn’t grow up watching movies. What drew you in to horror?

WC: I could be making any kind of film. It so happens that the first time I got to make one it was a scary movie and that’s how I got into it, and no one asked me to make a romantic comedy after that.

CC: That’s because it was so good.

WC: Exactly. At first it was an opportunity to make movies, so I started making horror movies, then there was a period where I started to feel trapped. But then came a realization that I was working, and how many people get a chance to do that? And also I taught as a college teacher and I taught the Greek myths a lot and horror films at that time were 20^th century mythology. Rather than looking down on it, I treated it like that, and gave the mythology as much as I could. And when I got into that I started making films like Nightmare on Elm Street, films that were multi-layered, and playing around with reality and time and everything else. But I became very proud to be in the genre. I think the audience is very smart and very adventurous and can face fear when a lot of people can’t. And I’ve found that the most interesting people I’ve met in life can face fear and even have fun with it, so I started to face it more and more and started to have fun with it.

You obviously have a short hand with the original cast, did you feel you were directing them differently than the new cast, or was it all the same?

WC: I think we do have a short hand. The characters are established, but the interesting thing is that they are always changing. Obviously, Neve was a teenager, and everyone was quite a bit younger, and they’ve all gone through enormous changes in their lives, and I think that makes Scream unique in that people have lives, they actually change, and they change who they are. Gail Weathers decided to marry Dewey and live in a small town despite the fact that she knew she’d be bored stiff. That’s really fascinating, and I think we’re all amazed we’re in this drama for fifteen years – it’s extraordinary, I don’t know of another film that has done this so I think we’re all pretty damn excited about being a part of it. And every new one has this extraordinary young cast as well. We all get to watch our selves when we were younger, and get to watch these young talents blossom in front of us. It has a lot of rewards and I don’t think any of think of it as a horror film or slasher film. It’s a very interesting, complex, funny smart drama.

When Scream hit in 1996 it was a phenomenon, and the sequels were made in fairly rapid succession. Now that you’ve had a ten year layoff, did your perspective on the franchise and what the films meant to you change, and if so how?

WC: Personally, I felt like we needed to bring it back up to the bar a little bit, I think Scream 3 was a little too goofy, a little too Scooby-Doo, we didn’t have Neve as much as we did in this – she wasn’t available, so she was more in the background. I think we all wanted to come back – not to make up for anything but if we were going to come back it has to be really, really good, and not just prove something to anyone else or ourselves. It deserved to be good, the audience deserved for it to be good, frankly hearing the response to the screenings we all felt really good because we all put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this film and it’s been going on for a year and a half. So it’s not something that we just knocked off, we were giving our all for it. You don’t get a lot of opportunities to do that in life or something really good that often, so it’s a good feeling.

New Scream 4 TV Spot

We’re now less than a month away from Wes Craven‘s Scream 4. The long-in-gestation sequel comes out April 15 and we’re now starting to get even more footage from the film, which stars returning Scream trilogy survivors Courtney Cox, Neve Campbell and David Arquette, and fresh blood Emma Roberts, among others . Now we’re getting a TV spot and it’s a fun cut down version of the film’s trailer. Take a look.

Wes Craven is coming off My Soul to Take - which was post-converted to 3-D to no greater effect and died at the box office – but when it comes to Craven he’s just as likely to follow his best film with his worst, and vice versa. Scream 4 came together partly because there was money to make it – no one was doing this because the story had to be told, but junky sequels to horror movies can be fun regardless of the reasons for its making. And Craven knows how to kill people on screen.

That said, the casting of new actors mid-shoot makes this look a little questionable, and hard to say if the release date (April is considered dumping grounds) is a sign they want less competition or if it’s a dog. We’ll know in a month if they’ve got the goods, but Adam Brody and Anthony Anderson tend to bring the funny even in lesser movies.

Scream 4 Photos Reveal The New Kids in Town

Several new photos have been released from the upcoming Dimension Films sequel, Scream 4. The movie is a follow up to the third installment of the horror franchise, which hit theaters over a decade ago, and will feature several of the original cast members. Some of the photos (like the one above) look like they were taken directly out of the first Scream. See if you can notice the similarities…

Scream 4 will kick-start a new trilogy in the franchise that will begin with Neve Campbell’s Sidney and end with Emma Roberts character Jill. Jill is Sidney’s cousin who will inadvertently inherit the wrath of Ghostface for the foreseeable future.

The cast will also includes Hayden Panettiere, Marielle Jaffe, Rory Culkin, Nico Tortorella, Erik Knudsen, Marley Shelton, Anthony Anderson, Adam Brody, Alison Brie, Mary McDonnell, Anna Paquin, Kristen Bell, Brittany Roberts.We’re sure this new group of teens will get chopped down to a scarce few by the end of the movie.

Woodsboro is back in full effect with the fountain photo. Do you remember seeing Campbell, Rose McGowan, Matthew Lillard, Jamie Kennedy and Skeet Ulrich sitting there 14 years ago? We hope they show several flashbacks during this movie to bring everything full circle. We’d love to see Ulrich back in his Johnny Depp phase again.

A new image has been released from the upcoming sequel Scream 4. It features the original three musketeers of the horror series, Dewey, Sidney, and Gale. It reminds us of the good old days because once again Dewey is wearing his cop uniform, which we thought he hung up in Scream 3. It looks like he’s returned to the force and is policing the only way he knows how.

David Arquette and Campbell will both be in attendance at this year’s Spike TV Scream Awards to promote, well, Scream! There’s no word if Courteny Cox will make an appearance (due to personal reasons). Ghostface is on his way back people. Get ready for that automated voice and that horrible costume to once again over run Halloween stores this year!

Does anyone else notice how drastically different Courteney Cox looks from the previous films to this one? It goes beyond natural aging, something’s up! Besides that, it’s great to see the original gang back together again, especially with Neve Campbell’s Sidney. Seeing her on that old set, on the roof of that house where so many horrible things happened brought back memories.

The additional Scream 4 cast includes more actors than we can count but here it goes: Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin, Hayden Panettiere, Nico Tortorella, Marley Shelton, Marielle Jaffe, Mary McDonnell, Adam Brody, Anthony Anderson, Lucy Hale, Alison Brie, Kristen Bell, Anna Paquin, Aimee Teegarden, Brittany Robertson, Shenae Grimes, and many more! The cast is huge and you know what that means? A high body count!

Scream 4 Updates: The Killer Voice Returns, Sidney Prescott’s New Job

Today we’ve learned two new things about Wes Craven’s upcoming Scream 4. One of them has to do with a casting and the other deals with the occupation of one of the characters. Throughout the original trilogy the only thing that stayed the same besides the 3 primary stars was the voice of the killer. And lucky for us, the actor behind that creepy tone will be back! Also, Sidney Prescott has been busy over the past decade building a murder free life for herself. Find out what her new gig is….

First off, Roger L. Jackson will return to add his creepy vocals to the Woodsboro killer. According to Wednesday’s Korner, the voice actor confirmed the gig by telling the site, “It’s a lot of fun, I love the work! It’s going to be a great horror sequel.” This will mark his 4th consecutive appearance in the series and we hope he sticks around for the next two, since Scream 4 is supposed to be a set up for a new trilogy.

As for Ms. Prescott, she’s spent the past 10 years churning out best selling novels. She’s an author and in one of the many set photos found on Beforethetrailer, there’s a promo image of her advertising an upcoming book signing. Didn’t Gail write a book in the 2nd or 3rd film and Sidney got in her ass about it? Granted Gail’s was probably on the trashy side…but still.

Scream 4 has begun production in Michigan and the gang’s all there. A behind the scenes photo has surfaced online and it features the franchise heroine Neve Campbell aka Sidney Prescott and she doesn’t look like the Sidney from back in the day. The actress has a new hairdo, which I’m assuming shows the maturity and change that her character has gone through over the past decade. Take a look…

Campbell seems to be going for the older, more mature look with this haircut. Is it just me or do you see a little bit of Selma Blair in there? The hair isn’t completely distracting because she wore a short bob in Scream 2 and 3, so this look just takes it a step further. How do you like it?

As you can see, there were also a few fan videos that were shot on the set that feature some reckless driving and a huge green screen. My question is why do they have a green screen? This is Scream not Final Destination, there needs to be plenty of practical effects that actually appear real and threatening.

Wes Craven Starts Shooting Scream 4 in May

It’s official, Scream 4 is coming to a theater near you. The LA Times blog wrote a piece on legendary horror director Wes Craven, and right before the article ends, said publication drops the bomb — production for Scream 4 will begin in May.

Late last year, Neve Campbell said that production for the film would start in mid-May of this year, but at the time Craven’s role as director wasn’t set in stone. Seems like someone figured out how to get the old team together because Scream 4 is being written by the original series writer Kevin Williamson and Courtney Cox and David Arquette have also committed to return.

Whether you’re behind this film or not, the future of Scream doesn’t seem too bad. After films like Last House on the Left, The Serpent and The Rainbow, and even his whole Scream trilogy, Craven has the experience to put together another horrific trilogy, he just has to focus on what is really important — the gore.

As far as the plot goes, Scream 4 will be set a decade later in Woodsboro, and will introduce new characters. Williamson has said that the film will reference Magna Comics, Asian ghost girl movies, PG-13 horror movies, vampire films, M. Night Shyamalan movies and even torture porn. How he will keep torture porn and PG-13 horror movies under the same roof, will be a sight to see.

Until Scream production begins, Craven will be preparing for the release of his latest film My Soul To Take due out later this year.

Neve Campbell Confirms Craven for Scream 4

Sidney Prescott aka Neve Campbell will be returning to the horror franchise that made her a star and according to the actress, director Wes Craven won’t be far behind. In a recent interview with Black Book, Campbell let it slip that Craven’s gig as the director on Scream 4 is pretty much a done deal.

It’s no secret that Wes Craven would be the last piece of the original crew to return to the Scream franchise. The director has been apprehensive about doing another film ever since the sequel news popped up late last year. Campbell herself was one of the last people to get on board after Scream 4 was finalized, and according to her interview Craven will soon follow.

“I’m pretty sure at this stage that Wes Craven is back on board to direct and Kevin Willamson is definitely writing it…so it is going to be great.”

She went on to say that production on the film will start in mid-April of next year, but she still hasn’t seen the script. If she’s right and Wes Craven does decide to dust the cobwebs off his director’s chair it would be amazing. The idea of having a fourth Scream film is hard to take at first, but with all the original cast and crew back it can’t be that bad.

The only thing that’s somewhat unnerving is the fact that the actors haven’t seen the script yet. Campbell said legally they all had to sign on first before getting a copy, so for all they know the screenplay could be horrible. Williamson must have pitched an amazing story to them, because they are literally walking out on faith.

Dimension Films Update: Scream 4, Halloween 3

Bob Weinstein just released the scariest film slate I’ve seen in a very long time. The majority of the features on the Dimension Films roster are mostly from the horror genre, but that’s not why they’re terrifying. The studio recently announced their production line up for 2010, and it’s filled with plenty of familiar names.

Here’s what we can expect from Dimension over the next year.

Scream IV: will start production in April or May with Wes Craven in talks to direct the film that will mark the beginning of a new trilogy. The biggest piece of news came from the announcement that Neve Campbell will reprise the role of Sidney in the film.
Spy Kids IV: Robert Rodriguez is currently writing the script for the film, which is scheduled to start shooting in March of 2010. The film will also be shot in 3-D like its predecessor.
Halloween III: is scheduled for release in October of 2010, and will also be in 3-D.

Weinstein then stated “I’m heading back to my franchise films.” He went on to list a boat load of remakes that he plans on shooting in the coming year, they include Scanners in 3D, Short Circuit, and American Werewolf in London.

There’s no excitement on my front for any of these films. All the titles are either exhausted or unnecessary. How can you make another Spy Kids without any kids? I believe the two child actors from that series are adults now. As for Scream 4, Neve Campbell has been so adamant about not starring in the film, so I’m very surprised that he mentioned her name in the cast list.

David Arquette and Courtney Cox Return for Scream 4

The developing fourth installment of the popular Scream horror franchise just took a step in the right direction. Original cast members David Arquette and Courteney Cox have confirmed to EOnline that they will return for the upcoming sequel. A few weeks back we reported on some emerging details regarding the films future, including creator and writer Kevin Williamson’s attempt to add another trilogy to the series.

The Arquettes have been rumored for a return for a while, and David recently broke the news to E! by saying the words so many fans wanted to hear, “We are going to be doing Scream 4.” He went on to discuss the significance of the characters Dewey and Gale in his personal life.

“I fell in love with my wife on Scream, so the opportunity to bring [Dewey] back to life and for my wife to play that really bitchy character again, it’s just going to be really fun,” Arquette said. “It’s just great.”

Dewey and Gale may be back on board, but the film’s heroine Sidney Prescott isn’t so eager. As we previously reported it doesn’t look as if the character’s portrayer Neve Campbell plans on stepping back into the shoes of the scream queen anytime soon. Arquette doesn’ t seem to know the full story on Campbell’s involvement, but he remains optimistic. “I hope Neve does it. I really hope so.”

Wes Craven and Neve Campbell are the last two original pieces missing from this sequel puzzle. I wonder if this is one of those situations where if one of them returns, the other will as well? I can’t see Scream without Neve, but I think any director would do. I love Craven but I won’t feel like anything major would be missing without him.
