Though the premise of Harold and Kumar go to White Castle was paper-thin, it’s been impressive watching Kal Penn and John Cho stretch stoner jokes into a trilogy. It helped that they continued to feature Neil Patrick Harris, who plays a sex crazed, drug addled womanizer. And for the third film – A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas – they enter the fantasyland of Holiday specials, it seems, as the trailer starts with the duo accidentally shooting Santa Claus. This entry was directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, who’s mostly a TV veteran, though original writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg wrote this one. This looks raunchy, stupid and fairy entertaining.

What is most exciting about the film is how it used 3-D. This is a film that seems to be arguing for the death of the gimmick by using it in completely stupid ways. As one of the most effective 3-D movies in the dimensional cinema boom was Jackass 3-D, hopefully this will be just as creative in its uses of the format.

The biggest knock against the trailer is the claymation, as a similar joke was recently done on Community. This was in production last year so perhaps it’s accidental overlapping.The film is scheduled to open on November 4.

Neil Patrick Harris Making Directorial Debut With Aaron and Sarah

Neil Patrick Harris has done it all. He’s done film, television, Broadway, he’s hosted two major award shows, and now he wants to direct. We’re not talking about an episode of “How I Met Your Mother,” we’re talking about a feature film. According to THR, Harris is ready to take the big leap in his career by directing his first movie, a comedy called Aaron and Sarah.

Aaron and Sarah is an indie romantic comedy that centers on “a geeky guy and a popular girl who become friends as freshmen in high school and see their relationship deepen through the four years, four proms and one funeral before graduation.” The two lead roles will be played by Emma Roberts and Josh Hutcherson respectively.

The screenplay for the film was written by Chad Gomez Creasey and Dara Resnik Creasey and was previously titled B.F.F. Several directors have been attached to the project including David O. Russell and Joe Nussbaum before him. Harris has experience directing both television and stage productions so it will be interesting to see him make the transition into film.

The premise of the film sounds sweet. It has a touch of Four Weddings and a Funeral but without Hugh Grant.

Neil Patrick Harris Returning for A Very Harold And Kumar Christmas

Earlier this week, production on the third film in the popular Harold and Kumar series began. The film is called A Very Harold And Kumar Christmas and will once again feature John Cho and Kal Penn as the stoned title characters. There’s been word that comedian Patton Oswalt has joined the cast and it’s also been confirmed that Neil Patrick Harris will make a “glorious” return!

Harris recently spoke to the folks over at Hollywood.com and revealed that he’ll be back for the holiday themed sequel. It may sound ridiculous considering his unlucky fate in Escape from Guantanamo Bay but somehow, someway he’ll be there. He didn’t really give any details about his return, which makes sense considering not much has been revealed about the movie itself.

I don’t know about you but it would be cool if he popped up in a Santa suit during a drug induced hallucination. His role will probably be a cameo because it would be weird seeing him there as a full-on supporting character. Whatever the situation may be, bring on more NPH!

Neil Patrick Harris Introduces The Smurfs Teaser Trailer

Earlier today, we brought you the first official image from the live action, CGI adaptation of The Smurfs and now a teaser trailer has just been released! The film stars Neil Patrick Harris who also introduces the footage that officially premiered on Yahoo Movies. In typical Smurfs fashion it’s short, sweet, and really blue. Take a look…

In The Smurfs, the forest creatures stumble upon a magic portal that transports them to modern day New York City (Central Park). They run into a married couple played by Harris and “Glee’s” Jayma Mays and beg them for help to escape the evil Gargamel (Hank Azaria) who’s trying to capture them so they can be used in his magic.

The trailer is under a minute long and gives us absolutely nothing in terms of the story or its characters. It’s just a way for the studio to introduce the new look of the creatures before hitting us with everything else the movie has to offer.

The Smurfs is directed by Raja Gosnell and is scheduled to hit theaters on August 3, 2011.

If you’re a fan of 20th Century Fox’s Ice Age franchise you’re going to love Rio. It’s an animated feature produced by Blue Sky Studios the company behind Horton Hears a Who and Robots. Rio will be in digital 3D and includes an A-list cast led by Oscar nominee, Anne Hathaway. Check out the first trailer…

Rio centers on Blu, a rare macaw who thinks he is the last of his kind but he soon discovers there’s another macaw out there, a girl named Jewel. He leaves his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio de Janeiro to start a life with her. Unexpectedly thrown together, they embark on an adventure of a lifetime, where they learn about friendship, love, courage, and being open to life’s many wonders.

The initial concept for Rio doesn’t seem like much on the surface but after watching the trailer it does look genuinely funny. The animation is pretty sharp and the colors are vibrant and fluid, so we can only imagine what it will look like in 3D. Besides Hathaway, the cast of Rio includes Rodrigo Santoro, George Lopez (he’s in everything!), and Jake T. Austin.

Rio is scheduled to hit the big screen on April 8, 2011.

Beauty and the Beast is one of the most popular fairytales of all time. The 1991 Disney adaptation was the first animated feature to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards so imagine our skepticism when we heard about Beastly, a hipper live action version that stars High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens, Alex Pettyfer and one of the Olsen twins. Beastly centers on Kyle Kingson, a rich and popular man who’s got good looks but a bad attitude. One day he crosses a young witch with his wicked mouth and she curses him with the face and body of a disfigured monster. His life is turned upside down when his father banishes him to Brooklyn where his only companionship comes from a blind tutor and his maid.

One day he saves the life of a drug addict and his daughter and in exchange for his help he asks that she live with him. He plans on making her fall in love with him because that’s the only way his curse can be broken.

Beastly co-stars Mary-Kate Olsen as the teen witch, Lisa Gay Hamilton as the house maid, and Neil Patrick Harris as the blind tutor.

Beastly debuts in theaters on July 30th.

Neil Patrick Harris to Guest Star on Glee

Neil Patrick Harris has had one busy week. First, the “How I Met Your Mother” actor landed the lead role in the upcoming Smurfs movie, and now he’ll be on the hit Fox series “Glee.” That’s right, he’s hopping networks from his home at CBS to film a guest spot on the musical high school comedy.

According to Zap2it, the actor has been confirmed to appear in an upcoming episode of the series from a Fox representative. The rep refused to give any further comment about his character, just that the actor would appear. But the snoops over at EW are claiming that he’ll play an old glee club rival of Matthew Morrison’s character Will, who “resurfaces as a board member at William McKinley.”

If Harris’ casting wasn’t awesome enough, his character’s name will be Bryan Adam! Darn those quirky writers. The episode will explain Will and Bryan’s past relationship by showing “Bryan picking up girls and getting all the cool solos, while Will sits off in the sidelines.” There will be several flashbacks and a heated and hilarious confrontation between the two.

The episode will be shot sometime next week and is scheduled to premiere during May sweeps. Kudos to CBS for letting Harris get some shine on another network. I can’t wait to see these vocally blessed fellas duke it out over dance moves and chorus music.

Neil Patrick Harris Cast in The Smurfs Movie

Former child star and resident womanizer on “How I Met Your Mother,” Neil Patrick Harris has landed a major film role. According to Deadline Hollywood, he’ll take on the lead in the upcoming big screen adaptation of The Smurfs. The film will be a mix of live action and CGI animation, so the big question is which part of the spectrum will Harris be on?

If you were hoping for Harris to be one of the blue tinted forest creatures, it’s not going to happen. He won’t lend his voice to one of the Smurfs, but he will be featured as the lead live action character in the film. The Smurfs will be directed by Raja Gosnell and will fit perfectly into Harris’ schedule because the production starts in April when he’s on hiatus from his show.

The Smurfs was a popular Hanna-Barbera series that ran almost ten years on television gaining fans from all over the world. It centered on a group of little blue men who wore white pants and hats and lived in a happy forest without a care in the world. I for one, am happy to see Harris in anything these days. He made a major comeback this decade with “How I Met Your Mother,” making people realize how talented he really is.

He can sing, he can dance, and apparently he can hang with Smurfs.

Anne Hathaway and Neil Patrick Harris Join Rio

Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway and hosting extraordinaire Neil Patrick Harris are signing on to star in the animated feature entitled, Rio. According to Reuters the duo will be joined by Lost and 300 alum Rodrigo Santoro in the the Fox Animation feature, which will be directed by Carlos Saldanha.

The story of Rio follows the adventures of a nerdy macaw who lights out from his small-town Minnesota cage for the exotic city of Rio de Janeiro. The film is scheduled for an April 8, 2011 release and will be filmed in 3-D digital animation. Even though the trio of actors are currently in negotiations to star in the film Fox wouldn’t confirm their casting. I guess they’re waiting for the ink to dry on their contracts. On a side note, Rio will be produced by Chris Jenkins (Surf’s Up) and Bruce Anderson (Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!)

I’m happy that they have one native Brazilian in the cast, Mr. Santoro. Perhaps he can add some legitimacy to the film in terms of it’s location. Both Hathaway and Harris have had their fair share of experience in the voice over field, so this should come as second nature to them.

Neil Patrick Harris Lands Two Film Roles

Neil Patrick Harris has landed two film projects this summer. Harris will take the lead role in the comedy The Best and The Brightest and co-star in Beastly, a film based on the 2007 novel by Alex Flinn.

In The Best and The Brightest, Harris will play a carefree father moves his family from Delaware to New York City’s Upper East Side. The family then finds it hard to handle the city’s competitive private school scene.

Beastly seems fun; A fresh new take of Disney’s beloved Beauty and the Beast. Harris will play a blind tutor to the teen beast (Alex Pettyfer). Young stars, Vanessa Hudgens and Mary-Kate Olsen will also star (interesting).

Harris hasn’t really starred in a mainstream film, but then again he is an icon in his own way (I love you Doogie!). It will be nice to see him lead the way in The Best and The Brightest. Could it become the actor’s way to mainstream film success?

Seems like Harris will have a full schedule this summer. How exciting!

I will however think of him from Harold and Kumar…
