Though Natalie Portman kept it busy last year with roles in No Strings Attached, Your Highness and Thor (all coming off of her Oscar win for Black Swan), she recently had a baby and took time off for motherhood. But today, Deadline announced that Portman is not only going back to work, she’ll be appearing in two movies: Knight of the Cups and Lawless. Both to be directed by Terrence Malick.

From 1978 to 1997, Terrence Malick left cinema, and though there were often reports that he was working on one thing or the other, for nearly twenty years he left the world with two movies, both arguably masterpieces (Days of Heaven and Badlands). He also cemented his reputation as an eccentric genius. But he returned in 1997 with The Thin Red Line, and came back again with 2005′s The New World. Since then he’s made Tree of Life, and has at least two films in various states of post-production, and is now on to a double feature. Which means that in the last three years he’ll have made more movies than he did in the first thirty five years of his career.

In Knight of the Cups, Portman will join Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas, while in Lawless she’ll be playing against Ryan Gosling, Bale, Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennett. The nice thing about being hailed as a genius in your lifetime is that you can have dream casts – the amount of talent on display is staggering. These films start shooting this summer (though it’s possible that Malick has already done some filming), and both are targeted for 2013 releases.

What do you think spurred Malick’s newly found productivity?

After making nearly $450 worldwide, Thor was considered successful enough for Marvel to green-light a sequel. But since making that decision, they’ve had a lot of trouble keeping a team together. The latest add-on is screenwriter Robert Rodat (according to Deadline Hollywood), who is reworking the script for director Alan Taylor for Thor 2. The film has a proposed 2013 release date.

Taylor (best known for his work on Game of Thrones) came in to replace Patty Jenkins, who was the original choice to take over the franchise from Kenneth Branagh. When Jenkins left, Natalie Portman publicly complained about the director being let go, even though she’s contractually obligated to appear in the sequel. Rodat is coming in to rework the script originally written by Don Payne. Payne was one of the five credited writers to work on the first film, which suggests he gave the script its last pass. Rodat is best known for Saving Private Ryan, and hasn’t written anything (credited) for the big screen since 2000′s The Patriot.

If this sounds like a mess, it probably is one, but that doesn’t mean the film won’t turn out. If the first film got anything right it was the casting, and everyone is bound to come back, including Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston (if he survives The Avengers), Portman and more. If – however – The Avengers under-performs, expect this to be scuttled. The problem with the sequel is that they likely want to do the second film on a budget, and much of the universe of these movies is in outer space and involves heavy special effects.

Perhaps DVD and Blu-ray and rentals are strong on Thor, because Marvel needs that sort of support to continue with the franchise. Generally making twice as much as you cost is the measurement of a cinematic success, and by that metric the first film was a win. But as sequels often do the same or less business than the first film, Marvel must be a little nervous, especially after all this turnaround. We shall see.

What do you want out of Thor 2?

Natalie Portman followed her beautiful Oscar winning performance in Black Swan with the casual Emma in No String Attached. The Ivan Reitman film was a financial success, but didn’t get much love from the critics. In a few weeks, Portman’s costar Mila Kunis is following her work in Black Swan with a Will Gluck romantic comedy titled Friends with Benefits. When the Benefits’ trailer hit the web, we had Deja Vu, but Blind Film Critic went the extra mile and created a trailer mashup to show audiences that Friends with Benefits and No Strings Attached are the same film, just made by different studios.

Films always seem to step on each others toes, especially romantic comedies, with their corny lines and obvious endings. That’s why when we received note that there was a trailer out there, pointing out the similarities between two 2011 films, we had to check it out.

In January, Paramount Pictures released No Strings Attached about two friends (Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman) who try to keep their relationship strictly physical, but end up falling for each other. On July 22, 2011, Screen Gems will be releasing, Friends with Benefits, a story about two friends (Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis) who realize their sex-only relationship leads to complications.

The mashup trailer points out similarities in plot, concept, characters, jokes and even camera angles. It’s pretty hilarious, but also very sad. It seems like creatives are running out of ways to tell a good, original boy-meets-girl story. Check out the video below…

This will actually be my second review of Hesher, and I’m back, because with some good edits, a sound remix and some well places music this movie has officially reached the potential that I saw in it back so Sundance 2010 (read first review review). Prepare for the awesome, well acted, original film that is Hesher. Now let’s see where I went wrong before…

The Players:

Directed by: Spencer Susser

Writing: Spencer Susser	and David Michôd (screenplay), story by Brian Charles Frank

Actors: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Devin Brochu, Rainn Wilson, Piper Laurie and actress/producer Natalie Portman

Original Music by: Frank Tetaz	(as Francois Tetaz)

Cinematography by: Morgan Susser

The Plot:

Hesher is here until you want him. This is a story about when everything goes wrong and you have no way out, sometimes an unexpected hero shows up at your door, and sometimes that hero comes with homemade tattoos, a rapist-looking van, and a sever violent streak. Let the fun begin!

Comparisons:

Old Review: “Some of these moments were great and others were a little awkward and it was mainly because of the music.”

Update: All these problems have been fixed. And what originally took you out of the film, now brings you in. The music helps with the odd tone and keeping you engaged throughout the film. The sound is perfect, the edit is tight — they’ve made this film the best that it can ever be and it works extremely well.

Old Review: “…it’s pretty basic in a lot of ways and the plot is somewhat predictable.”

Update: Perhaps I said this because of how this film played or perhaps I just had Sundance goggles on, but I can say that on the second viewing this film I found it fresh, original and though it plays out as expected in a way, I enjoyed the ride even more the second time through.

Old Review: “The kid in this movie is absolutely amazing. No doubt about it, he had a big part in front of him with lots of highs and lows and he dealt with it like a pro…. Wilson was completely believable and heart-wrenching.”

Update: This still holds true. Devin Brochu was what first made me like the film, now it’s why I love it. Rain Wilson was and is extraordinary and it’s great to see him tackles such a serious role.

Old Review: “Levitt was as always intriguing and fun to watch. There were some moments where he looked more like a character of himself…”

Update: With the sound fixed and a few edits, his character excels. Yes you have to go with his extreme character, but this time his fucked up Jesus, savior type impression was amazing (and know that I called him that, he’s never admitted to it and you can see in our interview with him) and his parables are ones to live by. Nicely done.

Overall:

This film is a fun ride, it’s got some great acting, it’s well made and well put together, I still don’t by Natalie Portman as “common”, but overall it’s a great pick, well worth your time and if any film has a sequel or spin-off, I hope it’s “On the Road with Hesher”

There’s only one word that matters this week on DVD: Bieber. That’s right, everyone’s favorite Canadian Pop Star (non-Bryan Adams division) brings his hit concert documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never directly into your house. So lock up your daughters, because otherwise they may run out to buy the DVD and force you to watch it.

For those not in the tween set there’s a couple of R-Rated anti-romances of the very serious (Blue Valentine) and attempted humor (No Strings Attached) sub-genres. All that, plus the complete box set of a classic TV Show!

Check it out below…

Feature Films

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never

I made a pact with myself the minute Justin Bieber entered the national consciousness: I will not make fun of him.

I see no reason to mock this kid. He’s sixteen, he’s very earnest, and he’s up there doing his thing. Plus, he’s an easy target. It’s so easy to mock somebody doing kiddie music and I find absolutely no joy in that.

Yes, he has a weird haircut, he’s very small and sings treacly music – but making fun of him is like making fun of a nerd in hiked-up pants – everyone already made the joke in their mind, so it’s useless to go ahead and actually tell the joke.

And if you’re someone who would never even want to make fun of Justin Biever – you can buy Never Say Never on DVD.

No Strings Attached

“Why would she do that movie?”

Many people consider this question of derisive insult. A condemnation of Natalie Portman’s choices and a complete assault against a film many hadn’t seen.

But I consider it something different. I consider that question – raised by many – to be a glowing compliment of Portman’s status as an actress. A sign that she’s ascended the ranks of movie stardom to a point that we expect her to only do “good” movies.

Swap her out with Kate Hudson or Kristen Bell or Blake Lively – suddenly you don’t twitter in revulsion with the prospect of their appearing in this film. A hackneyed sex romp alongside Ashton Kutcher seems right in these actresses’ wheelhouses.

And that’s not to say these ladies aren’t completely capable actresses, they just don’t have the gravitas that a Portman, Amy Adams, Anne Hathaway or somebody of that level has. A gravitas that has people automatically assuming their films should be of higher quality than a run-of-the-mill rom-com.

However, if this is the type of movie you’re happy to see Natalie Portman doing, you can buy No Strings Attached on DVD.

Also:

Blue Valentine – Buy Now

TV on DVD

“Home Improvement”: 20th Anniversary Complete Collection

Remember when Tim Allen was considered the funniest man in America? Yeah, me neither.

If you’re one of the members of the generation who does remember that time- you can buy Home Improvement on DVD.

Thor may be the trickiest of the big Marvel characters to adapt. Both a Norse God, and an extra-terrestrial being, Thor doesn’t have the “normal person thrust into superpowers” hook – which is both good and bad. And to that end Thor is not really an origin tale, so much as a learning experience for the main character. There’s a lot to do here, on top of director Kenneth Branagh putting a big budget fantasy movie on the shoulders of Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, both actors who – at best – had some notable supporting performances previous to this. Did they succeed?

The Players

Director: Kenneth Branagh

Writers: Don Payne, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (Screenplay), Mark Protosevich and J. Michael Straczynski (Story)

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Idris Elba, Rene Russo, Kat Dennings, Stellan Skarsgard

The Plot

After nearly being crowned King of the other world Asgard, Thor (Hemsworth) is banished to Earth by his father Odin (Hopkins) until he learns some humility. There he meets Jane Foster (Portman), and falls in love. His hammer is also on Earth, but it can only be retrieved by someone who can use it correctly. Meanwhile Thor’s brother Loki (Hiddleston) is now in line to be king, but he learns some dark secrets that change who he is, and leads his father into a sleep that puts him in charge. But Loki is a bad leader, and the only thing that can save Asgard (and possibly Earth as well) is Thor.

The Good

Tom Hiddleston: Hiddleston compares his character to Iago, and what makes the film work at its best is when Hiddleston is on screen. It’s hard to get a bead on his character, in the best possible way – you keep watching him in hopes of getting a better understanding of machinations. But at the center of the character is a real person, who is lashing out in a way that is perfect for a younger, and possibly underestimated brother.

It’s Not an Origin Film: Though it is a lesson film, which in some ways is similar to the origin tale, the film spends little time showing Thor becoming Thor. He’s Thor.

The Cast: Though this leads into some of the problems, everyone is cast perfectly. Hopkins may be the only conceivable choice for Odin, Chris Hemsworth is pretty much perfect as Thor, and the supporting cast are note perfect. but…

The Bad

Talented Cast, Too Bad They Have Nothing to Do: Rene Russo is the wife of Odin, and she probably has about three lines in the film. The Warriors Three and Sif (Jamie Alexander) are in the film, and are defined by their look, or that one likes to eat a lot. Portman’s Jane Foster is sexually attracted to Thor, but other than being at the right place to meet Thor, she doesn’t have much else to do. This is the Thor and Loki show, and everyone else serve the plot to move the story forward. Only Idris Elba seems able to have a little bit of fun. The film is 114 minutes, and it’s possible that the film plays better with an additional half hour or hour of footage.

Empire Building: S.H.I.E.L.D. shows up in the film to build a tent around Thor’s Hammer, but nothing they do in the film is of any consequence, other than to give Thor someone to battle on Earth. Too much of the film is dedicated to things that are more important to the Marvel canon than the film itself. Like the last point – as Marvel has spoiled – Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye shows up in the film, but all he does is point an arrow at Thor and then disappear from the film. It’s cool if you know who Hawkeye is, but Renner has nothing to do but show up. This was fun when Sam Jackson showed up at the end of Iron Man, because it didn’t get in the way of the story, but here it’s the cinematic equivalent of standing behind a newscaster and waving.

Narratives That Are Self-Evident: The film is about how Thor got back his hammer, and the idea of a leader learning humility is a good plot, but how Thor learns humanity almost happens off screen, and the change – though apparent in the character – is not made cinematic. Something happens and Thor changes immediately. On top of that, Thor is kept from his hammer for the majority of the running time, but it’s not even a spoiler to say that he gets his hammer back. Because of that, the majority of the film is a slog when Hiddleston isn’t on screen because there’s little to latch on to, and the thing that would have made this more palatable are characters to care about. It also comes across as a cost-cutting measure, as the middle then is mostly spectacle-free.

The Mixed

Kenneth Branagh: As a director, Branagh lost his way quickly after the great success of Henry V, and his work with the cast is excellent, but his sense of making this exciting is using canted angles, and he doesn’t use the massive amounts of CGI in interesting ways. I think that the film had to exist in some way that sets up the characters, and the film does introduce Thor to cinema in a way that suggests he’d be a good character to follow, and has a number of great friends and foes, but it feels more like a pilot than complete narrative. Sadly, that’s how so many of these comic franchises have been going.

Overall

Not so much terrible as all set up, Marvel seems more interested in getting to The Avengers than they are in telling great stories. Thor may have been toughest to crack cinematically, but that can’t defend a very uninteresting story that offers few grace notes outside of Hiddleston’s performance.

Score: 3.5/10

Thor opens May 6.

Director Spencer Susser is ready to rock your world, with one of the most bad-ass, hardcore films of the year, Hesher starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Devin Brochu, Rainn Wilson, Piper Laurie and actress/producer Natalie Portman. The film was bought out at Sundance in 2010 by Newmarket and has taken its sweet time working its way into theaters, maybe it’s because of Natalie Portman’s recent popularity/winning streak but for some reason it’s finally found it’s way in and I for one say fuck yeah. Check out the trailer below…

I was lucky enough to catch this film out at Sundance in 2010 (read review) and all I can say is that sometimes in the midst of death, starvation, homophobia and molestation it’s fun to watch a guy with a tattoo of a guy giving you the finger try to jump a bike into a pool and fall. That’s not to say that this film doesn’t have some heavy moments and some fine acting in it, in fact it’s the intensity and seriousness is what makes it all the more funny and entertaining.

The film isn’t perfect, it’s pretty basic in a lot of ways and has a few problems along the way (which may have been fixed in the new cut), but they’re all small and forgivable mainly because the film is such a fun ride filled with such amazing actors and colorful characters. And this film is 10x better than the majority of mainstream films inundating the cinemas.

The film hits theaters May 13th.

What do you think of the film? Think it’s worth the price of admission?

If it feels like the internet has been beating up on Thor, it’s probably because the clips that have surfaced have been terrible. But for those looking forward to the film, there’s finally been a featurette to emerge that doesn’t rely on terrible comedy, or the non-presence of Hawkeye to sell the film. In it is footage of Asgard, and comments from director Kenneth Branagh and stars Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman. More than anything else recently, this looks good. Take a look…

Again, this is the first time the fantasy world of Thor is given a better once-over, and that’s where the film is the most exciting. This isn’t an Earth-bound adventure, and the flights of intergalactic fantasy are what’s going to make and/or break the film. And that’s the problem with the footage so far. It’s wrestling moves and bad comedy. The Hawkeye clip was probably the worst of the lot, it was unbelievable that they were selling the appearance of a character by his bow without showing the actor. Here is that clip, for comparison:

Part of this footage seems an attempt to sell the film to non-fans, but how interested they’re going to be in the God of Thunder doing bad slapstick is unknown.

Thor vs. Jon-Mikl Thor, who wins?

Though the title suggests a stoner comedy along the lines of The Pineapple Express, Your Highness is more of a goof on the fantasy and Sword and Sorcery movies that took over cinema in the early 1980′s, films that ranged from the studio financed Conan the Barbarian and Clash of the Titans, to the Italian and American rip-offs like Yor, the Hunter from the Future and Barbarian Queen. If you’ve got a soft spot for The Beastmaster, but also recognie that it’s kinda goofy, this movie is for you. Otherwise…

The Players

Directed by: David Gordon Green

Writers: Danny McBride Ben Best

Starring: Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel, Justin Theroux

The Story

Thadeous (McBride) is the second son of King Tallious (Charles Dance) and therefore second in line to Fabious (James Franco) who is always successful on his magical journeys. Recently he’s rescued Belladonna (Deschanel) from capitivity, and plans to marry her. Then the evil Wizard Leezar shows up and steals her for “The Fuckening” where he will impregnate her with a dragon. Thadeous and Fabious are forced team up to find her, and eventually get the help of Isabel (Portman), who has a quest of her own.

The Good

Comedy from Unexpected Performers: Sure Danny McBride is going to be funny, but performers like Damien Lewis and Toby Jones are commited to the material, and it pays off in jokes and directions unexpected that kill. Oscar-winner Natalie Portman plays it straight, but then when she has to deliver filthy dialog she does it without a wink and it kills.

Justin Theroux: Playing the villain, his hamstrung plot for “The Fuckening” falls apart the further it goes along because of his incompetence.

All Out: Some of the jokes, and settings are just plain out there. From a fortune telling mythical creatures who’s also a pedophile, to a randy Minotaur, the film goes to some pretty strange places for laughs, but that it’s doing so in this setting

Brotherly Love: McBride and Franco don’t look like each other, but their relationship is very real, and that’s helped by Franco’s commitment to character. The film works because it never descends into parody (the closest it comes is a very direct mockery of Clash of the Titans Bubo) and the two play off each other well.

Cadence: Comedy works when it hits you with a surprise, and with David Gordon Green’s comedies, sometimes those surprises come from weirdly chosen inflections of a line, or weird digressions. Though McBride’s comic cadence is well defined – and he does it well here – Green constantly finds notes to hit that come out of nowhere.

The Bad

The Prologue: McBride’s character gets in trouble with midgets. Comedies that use midgets for punchlines are often bad, and though there’s one good joke in the mix, it starts the film off on the wrong foot, which is made worse by…

The Opening Credits: The pot angle of this film was a mislead, and the opening credits (which are vandalized while they play) sets this up to be more along the lines of a spoof movie. If the movie itself never tips its hand, the credits do, and so you’re left with the first couple minutes of the film kinda sucking.

The Specificity: Having grown up watching pretty much all of the films this film is riffing on, I get it, and I laughed hardily. For many who have context of a film like Krull or Excalibur, the genre being toyed with isn’t really so familiar as to play as well with people who don’t know it.

Overall

This is the sort of film that usually creates a binary response. If you like McBride’s comic stylings, and appreciate the references, then you’ll probably have fun with it. But those who aren’t McBride fans, or didn’t play a little Dungeons and Dragons, and never saw the fun of Krull are probably going to be left at a loss. Ultimately, the film is a goof, and perhaps part of what makes it appealing or unappealing is that they actually made it.

Rating: 7.5/10

Your Highness hits theaters April 8.

This is an expansion of footage that’s already been on line, in that we’ve seen Thor on the ground before. Now that it’s in context, that this film looks to be dicey is no longer up for question. With the dutch angles, and the tasering, this clip either feels out of context or – perhaps – what we should be expecting from this project.

Then again, this doesn’t have any special effects in it, and with the time crunch that comes with big special effects movies perhaps they wanted something that was completely done. And this has been the way for a while now, many effects shots in bug budget movies are worked on right up until prints have to be delivered to theaters.

Arguably a single clip is not enough to get the feel of a movie of this scale, and it seems silly to judge a film like this on a one minute dialogue-heavy sequence. But if this is the tone of the comedy throughout, and this is their first foot forward…

The main question is Kenneth Branagh. His first film – 1989′s Henry V - suggested a world-beating talent. Subsequent efforts (like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein among others) proved that he wasn’t. This could be his triumphant return to big budget film making if it works. If it works.

Are you sold on Thor?

Natalie Portman‘s stunt double has suggested that she did much of the dancing in Black Swan, and the non-controversy has been making the gossip rounds – leading to another double to suggest it was her backside in Your Highness. That was mostly debunked, and now Mila Kunis and Darren Aronofsky have stood up to defend Portman and her dance moves. Aronofsky sent out a press release, while Kunis talked to Entertainment Weekly and gave the money quote: “Natalie danced her a** off.”

Aronofsky and his editor counted the dance shots, and Aronofsky said that 80% were Portman, with 90% of the screen time of the dancing featuring Portman. Kunis talks about the safety net of having a double, and notes that no one involved with the film was suggesting that Portman did it all.

This story has gained some traction because it’s gossip – as I said before – and there are surely people who want to poo-poo Portman. Perhaps this is reasonable ammunition, but as Brian De Palma once said “The camera lies 24 frames a second” (which is a rebuttal of an old Jean-Luc Godard quote “The camera is truth at 24 frames per second”). Ultimately both De Palma and Godard are right. Cinema creates its own truth, but everything in it is manufactured to be there. If Portman created a believable reality to her dancing and audiences were fooled that it was all her, then that’s the art of cinema.

We may yet hear more, but with so many involved with the film throwing their support- overwhelmingly – to their leading lady the story should go away.

Do you find knowing about arguments like this distracting when watching a movie?

Everybody’s favorite arthouse Blockbuster hits shelves this week as Natalie Portman’s oscar-winning role in Black Swan dances its way onto DVD. But that’s not all for the art film set. There are two movie so tiny, that you may not even know they exist. Or, you could just enjoy Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi in the kiddie hit Tangled. It’s all for the laser-aided spinning.

But it’s not just movies this week. Finally, we get the return of TV on DVD with HBO’s Treme and AMC’s Mad Men bringing the cable heat.

All that, plus a movie I’m pretty sure Hilary Swank wished didn’t exist.

Check it out below…

Feature Films

Black Swan

What else can really be said about Black Swan at this point? It won Natalie Portman a ton of awards, it made huge box office, and proved that a ballet/horror/eroticthriller can work.

It’s almost gotten to the point where it’s boring to praise it. That once you hear someone say, “Black Swan was really good!” you just roll your eyes and assume they’re out-of-touch.

So, I’m not going to be out of touch. Instead, I’m going to be super hi-tech and remind you of my Twitter feed that you can follow @paynehumor!

Oh, you can can also buy Black Swan on DVD. Though I assume you’re already tired of hearing about it.

Also:

Fair Game – Buy Now

Made in Dagenham – Buy Now

Tangled – Buy Now

TV on DVD

“Mad Men”: Season 4

What do we call this type of show? The show that exists in a sort of singular limbo. The show that is “okay” to watch.

They’ve come in different types and genres. At one point it was “Arrested Development”, other times it was “The Wire” and it even went as mainstream as “The Office” for a time. It’s unclear how it happens, but every so often a show enters the zeitgeist as a series its viewers needn’t be ashamed to admit they follow.

Of course, these are a specific type of TV viewer. Those who don’t “own a TV set”. Those who “don’t have cable”. Those who TV is “only for watching movies”. Y’know those who make you want to “punch them in the throat”.

Still, despite all this, they manage to glom on to some show that you’ve been watching for years and instantly become obsessed thanks to BitTorrent and Netflix Marathons.

And what does this do? This arrogant fondness of your favorite TV show? It ruins it. It turns you into one of those snobs just for liking a good TV show. Sure, you’ve watched it since it was and actually follow all the good TV shows, but now, no matter what, you become a TV bandwagonner who didn’t start watching “Arrested Development” until it came out on DVD, even if you specifically remember watching the pilot after “The Simpsons”.

The great thing about these TV snobs? They haven’t seen the show yet because their TV is “only for Netflix” and that means you have an incredible amount of power: The spoiler. You can ruin everything for them and feel completely powerful knowing that you’re a real fan who doesn’t follow the cognoscente trends to the effect that you actually, y’know, watch the television show.

So, yes, in this instance. I advocate the spoiler.

Hurry! Because they can buy “Mad Men”: Season 4 on DVD today.

Also:

And Just So You Know, This DVD Exists…

I think they got Hilary Swank to make that face by showing her a copy of her IMDB and the roles she did after Million Dollar Baby.
