The circle of life, indeed. When The Lion King hit theaters in 3-D, the Walt Disney company was not expecting it to be the cash cow that it’s turned into, as the re-release has made nearly $80 Million and isn’t done yet. It’s then no surprise that Disney has now slated four of their classics for re-issue. All in 3-D. Check them out..

Up first is Beauty and the Beast on January 13, 2012 , which will be followed later that year by Finding Nemo on September 14, 2012 . It should be noted that Beast is currently available on 3-D Blu-ray, but a DVD and Blu-ray reissue of The Lion King didn’t hurt that film’s business. Nemo has yet to come to Blu-ray, and at this point, I would target a fall 2012 release date for it – if it worked for The Lion King, they’ll surely do it again.

Monsters, Inc. will be hitting screens January 18, 2013. This is good for everyone as the film’s prequel Monsters University hits June 21, 2013. And then The Little Mermaid is slotted for September 13, 2013.

There are a couple of things to note here. One is that converting computer animated films to 3-D is relatively easy, so slotting The Little Mermaid for last may have more to do with prepping materials. Beauty and the Beast is likely the first to go because it was recently converted for Blu-ray. The other thing to note is that Disney used to reissue their films all the time, a practice that stopped when they didn’t know how to deal with home video. Their reissue strategy is why Disney has pulled their titles off the market and then re-released them a couple years (or sometimes a decade) later. This model has proved very successful for the studio, and helped make their most famous misfire (Fantasia) profitable in the 1960′s.

Which of the four are you most excited for?

Sequel Titled Monsters University" width="576" height="308" />

There’s been a slow trickle of news from CinemaCon, with most of it teaser posters for films from later this year. The biggest bit so far is the official title for the Pixar sequel to Monsters Inc. That title: Monsters University. This also fits with previous information this might be a prequel. Though nothing has been confirmed, the likelihood of John Goodman and Billy Crystal reprising their roles is all but assured (who would say no to Pixar?)

Pixar is rightly revered for their work so far, but – that noted – this bent of doing sequels (and now prequels) is a little disheartening. I’m sure this will be another quality effort from the team, it’s still a little sad that they feel the need to go back to previous films after Toy Story 3 and Cars 2. And this is a dreaded prequel. There’s no getting around that this is partly about keeping the toys and the brand viable.

Monsters Inc. is one of Pixar’s best films, and has aged well over the decade since it came out. But without the “doorways to children” as the central narrative concern and having established how the main character come to change that for the better, it won’t have that great connection to how children process and fall in love with supposedly scary or large things. But the universe of this film was one of the most exciting aspects of the original, and exploring that could be fun.

Cars 2 hits theaters this summer, so work on the film should be well under way, with the film targeted to hit theaters sometime in 2012.

What’s your favorite Pixar? (Mine is Monsters Inc.… Or Ratatouille… or…)

This isn’t really a surprise to me, but there are rumors circulating that Pixar is working on a sequel to their hit film, Monster’s Inc. According to /Film several big wig buyers were given the inside scoop on Disney’s future film plans at this year’s Licensing Fair that was held in Las Vegas. Even though these privileged individuals were sworn to secrecy, a few of them spilled the beans that Pete Docter the director of Up, is definitely working on Monster’s Inc. 2.

After the immense success of Up, and it’s domination of the box office two weeks in a row (are we really blown away by this news?), Docter is now the new hot director in town. In the past Docter has toyed with the idea of a Monster’s Inc sequel, and even told audiences at 2008′s Comic Con that “We’ve thought about it… We’ve got a couple of ideas.” This paired with the unofficial confirmations from the Licensing Fair gives us something to think about.

Pixar has already released their upcoming schedule up to 2012, but Monster’s Inc wasn’t mentioned. That leaves the door open for a possible sequel in 2013? News has even spread within the Pixar compound. Their official blog started receiving searches for “‘monsters 2013 pixar” way back in January. The search stemmed from inside the companies own domain, Pixar.com. Even their own workers want to know what’s going on!

Do you think Monster’s Inc 2 is on it’s way? What other Pixar films would you like to see a sequel to?
