Time for another dramatic romance thanks to Tribeca Film and Miramax! They have just officially announced today that they will be teaming up on the U.S. release of Last Night, which they are calling “an intricately layered relationship drama.” Sounds like every relationship story out there, the question is, is it any good? It’s got a cast that can go either way; Keira Knightley, she either puts in an Oscar nominated performances or something middle of the road (if the script isn’t there); Sam Worthington, we’re used to seeing him in action roles so it’ll be interesting to see how he is when he has to just stand and deliver a line; and then there is the always sexy, and often talented Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, the French actor that no one really knows — but soon will. Sounds like this film can go either way for me! At least now with Tribeca Film and Miramax’s help we’ll all have the chance to judge!

Tribeca Film has acquired theatrical, VOD and select digital rights to the film and plans to release the film in Spring 2011 theatrically in multiple U.S. markets, including New York and Los Angeles, and also via national VOD outlets and on additional platforms. Miramax has retained distribution rights for home video and television sales and long-term digital rights. For a film like this, it’s nice to see them embrazing the VOD and in home markets as well as cinema releases. This seems like a goody to watch on your own sofa with a drink in hand.

Want to know more about the film?

Last Night centers on a married couple apart for an evening when the husband takes a business trip with a colleague to whom he’s attracted. While he’s resisting temptation, his wife encounters her past love. Starring the Academy Award®-nominated Knightley (Pride & Prejudice), Worthington (Avatar), Mendes (The Other Guys), Canet (Tell No One) and Griffin Dunne (After Hours), the film is written by Massy Tadjedin, who makes her directorial debut with Last Night. Tadjedin is a screenwriter whose credits include The Jacket, which starred Knightley and Adrien Brody. Clint Mansell (Black Swan) is the film’s composer, and cinematography is by Peter Deming (Mulholland Dr.).

Here’s all the nice things the pros had to say about one another and the deal…

“Tribeca Film and Last Night are perfectly matched, and we are excited about the opportunity to bring this film to audiences across the country,” said Jon Patricof, Chief Operating Officer, Tribeca Enterprises. “In collaboration with Miramax we will offer a range of avenues through which this film can be discovered. Along with our partners at American Express, we look forward to maximizing the potential for this film.”

Mike Lang, CEO of Miramax, said, “We are very pleased to partner with Tribeca to bring Last Night to U.S. audiences. We see our deal with Tribeca Film as a strong example of the kind of strategic alliances we are looking to develop. We look forward to expanding the film’s reach to audiences globally as well as maximizing all of Miramax’s retained rights, especially on the digital front.”

“We are extremely fortunate to have the highly motivated new Miramax and Tribeca Film releasing this beautiful and nuanced film by Massy Tadjedin. The film is an entertaining exploration of boundaries and honesty in a contemporary marriage,” said producer Nick Wechsler.

“Last Night is an absorbing and provocative story about relationships, past and present, temptation and fidelity,” said Geoffrey Gilmore, Chief Creative Officer of Tribeca Enterprises. “Beautifully realized by director Massy Tadjedin, the film is a fresh and compelling take on the age old issues of love and commitment. It is carried by the exemplary performances of the entire cast, making it a resonant and vastly entertaining experience.”

Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Last Night drew solid from numerous critics.

Is that enough to get you interested?

Here’s another story about a struggling film studio in the midst of being sold and no we’re not talking about MGM. We’re referring to Miramax, a company that can actually see the light at the end of the tunnel. After months of talks and speculation Disney has finally decided to sell the studio to a buyer. According to MSNBC, Filmyard Holdings LLC are the new owners and all it cost them was a little over $660 million, chump change.

Miramax has a hefty catalogue of film titles, which will now be in the holding group’s possession such as Chicago, and Shakespeare in Love, two Best Picture Oscar winners (isn’t that ironic?) Even though the studio has brought Disney critical and commercial success the House of Mouse wants to concentrate on other things like their branded films and franchises.

“Although we are very proud of Miramax’s many accomplishments, our current strategy for Walt Disney Studios is to focus on the development of great motion pictures under the Disney, Pixar and Marvel brands,” Disney Chief Executive Officer Robert Iger said in a statement.

Construction magnate Ron Tutor, investment firm Colony Capital LLC and other individuals are partners of Filmyard Holdings, which may or may not also include Rob Lowe. A couple of weeks ago there was speculation that the actor along with Tutor and Tom Barrack were planning on purchasing the studio. The official press release for the sale didn’t mention his name or any of the minor holders involved with the deal. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t in on this and if he is, good job Soda pop!

The deal is expected to be finalized between September 10th and the end of the year.

What do you think of Disney’s decision to sell Miramax? Do you think Lowe is in on this deal?

Rob Lowe is more than an actor, he’s an entrepreneur. The eighties icon turned television star is making waves with his latest career move. The guy with the crooked smile and piercing blue eyes is trying to get in on a few major business mergers according to a report from TMZ. The actor has recently teamed up with business mogul Tom Barrack to make his first acquisition, Miramax Films.

The company that was previously owned by Harvey and Bob Weinstein has been on the chopping block for quite a while and Lowe along with Barrack, and Ron Tutor want it for themselves. They’ve set up an offer and are ready to sign on the dotted line. According to the site, “…the deal is being put together quickly and could close as early as today.”

It looks like Lowe’s time off from the ABC drama “Brothers & Sisters” is being put to good use! The numbers being thrown around at the moment are in the $500 – $600 million range, which was what the Weinstein’s offered to buy it back. Unfortunately, they were unable to do so. It seems odd that the founders of the company can’t purchase it yet Sodapop from The Outsiders can. What is the world coming to?

Even though they no longer want the smaller company, they’re not willing to part with it for cheap! Disney is asking between $650 million to $800 million for Miramax. Only big shot contenders who haven’t been crushed by the recession stand a chance at purchasing Disney’s independent film division.

Big shot contenders such as Lions Gate Entertainment Corp and Weinstein Brothers are on top of the buyers list. The Weinstein Co. has a history with Miramax. Bob and Harvey Weinstein built Miramax 31 years ago and named it after their parents Miriam and Max. The Weinsteins sold Miramax to Disney in 1993, but stayed on as co-chief executives until five years ago, when they left to form The Weinstein Co. So it would be like a home coming if they were to purchase Miramax from Disney. David Glasser, operations executive for the independent Weinstein Co. said:

“We are keen to look at the company and we will see what happens in coming weeks.”

Independent studio Summit Entertainment, which is behind the popular Twilight franchise are also contenders in the buying of Miramax as is MGM.

Who will come out no top and gained ownership of Miramax and how much will it seel for? We’ll just have to wait and see.

What would you like to see happen to the studio?

For the past year, all we’ve been hearing about are the financial troubles of MGM and the Weinstein Company, and underneath it all Miramax was the one really suffering. According to a report from The Wrap, Disney has decided to put an end to the studio that was started by Harvey and Bob Weinstein back in 1979.

It’s been announced that the New York and Los Angeles offices of Miramax will close their doors causing 80 people to lose their jobs. When it was founded 31 years ago by the Weinsteins it was a leading distribution company that produced some of the most cutting edge films of the time.

Some of the titles that came from under the Miramax umbrella were Quentin Tarantino‘s Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, as well as My Left Foot, The Piano, The English Patient, Shakespeare in Love, The Crying Game, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Chicago, and Kevin Smith‘s Clerks.

The studio was sold to Disney back in 1993, and the founders decided to leave in 2005 to start their self titled, Weinstein Company. Harvey Weinstein and his brother have been trying to buy the company back from the House of Mouse but they haven’t gotten a response to their offer. Here’s what Harvey had to say about hearing the sad news.

“I’m feeling very nostalgic right now. I know the movies made on my and my brother Bob’s watch will live on as well as the fantastic films made under the direction of Daniel Battsek. Miramax has some brilliant people working within the organization and I know they will go on to do great things in the industry.”

Disney Chief Bob Igar has stated that he would sell the company for 1.5 billion dollars, but do the Weinsteins have that kind of money? They haven’t really been on a winning streak as of late.

What do you think of Disney shutting down Miramax? Do you think they should have left it open?
