Milla Jovovich Kills Zombies in the Resident Evil Retribution Trailer

Resident Evil Retribution is the fifth film in the franchise and reunites many of the series stars, including Milla Jovovich, Oded Fehr, Sienna Guillory, Jason Isaacs, and now Michelle Rodriguez – who was killed in the first film. Perhaps director Paul W.S. Anderson is going for that Fast Five feel. The film is due out September 14, but there’s a new trailer (to coincide with the release of the new Underworld film), and it’s partly an ad for Sony. Check it out…

What’s most noticeable is that it’s mostly an advert for its distribution company. Sure, it’s meant to a parody (“this is my world”), but it’s still blatant. The trailer itself is made up of the images of completed effects shots and glimpses of the returning cast members, and some action. There’s no real story here, but it’s safe to say that Jovovich shoots a bunch of zombies (possibly in slow motion).

The last Resident Evil film Afterlife was surprisingly successful – perhaps because it used 3-D in a time when audiences weren’t as cynical as they are now – and became the highest grossing film of the franchise. It made $60 Million domestically, but over $230 Million internationally, so it’s no surprise they’re back for more. And to be fair, this looks big. The franchise has been disposable since day one, but it’s also managed to pre-date the big zombie revival, and outlast it.

Check Out ‘The Three Musketeers In 3D’ Trailer

Because Hollywood will not rest until the whole world looks like a 3D film directed by Guy Ritchie, we now have the official trailer for The Three Musketeers in 3D. Which is actually a pretty subtle title, considering it was originally The 3D Musketeers in 3D to the 3^rd Dimension in 3D So Please, Please Pay an Inflated Ticket Price because it’s 3D and Orlando Bloom Does Stuff with a Sword and You Guys Still Like That, Right? (in 3D).

Starring Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz, and Milla Jovovitch, the film tells the classic Alexandre Dumas tale, but with more explosions and witty repartee and that weird Orlando Bloom stare thing that he does a lot to convey ‘intensity.’ The Three Musketeers in 3D is was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, whose credits include Mortal Kombat, the Resident Evil films, and Alien vs. Predator. So… it’s got that going for it, too.

So basically it looks like Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon, but with stuff blowing up and flying at the camera, and Milla Jovovitch being all Milla Jovovitch-y. Also, I’d like to hereby submit ‘Milla Jovovitch-y’ to the film bloggers lexicon, right next to my other critical shorthands, such as ‘Orlando Bloom blank stare,’ or that other gem, ‘wow, this new 3D cannibalization of a classic novel by Dumas looks really, really dumb, but hey, 3D!’.

Stone: Movie Review

Stone hits theaters with a thump. This is a film packed to the brim with ideas and a lot of potential. The fact that you have Robert De Niro and Edward Norton facing off in some pretty intense scenes definitely helps the film as a whole. Sadly it lacks any grand significance in the end that you’ll be craving after going through such an intense experience — but then again, that might just be the point, you don’t always get what you want.

The Plot:

A convicted arsonist looks to manipulate a parole officer into a plan to secure his parole by placing his beautiful wife in the lawman’s path.

The Good:

Ideas: Despite the fact that the film never fully achieved what it was capable of, there were some great ideas in it that really make you pay attention and draw you in. This wasn’t something that was thrown together, rather something that someone set out to accomplish and in that sense it succeeds.
Acting: Overall no one is winning any awards for this but it was nice to see De Niro in such a dramatic-twisted role, Norton transforms himself for the movie and in the movie, Conroy who has the type of face that tells you everything without saying anything and Jovovich, who is hot — and she puts in a good hot-crazy girl performance – though I think Blake Lively might have one upped her in The Town.

In-Between:

Repetition: Throughout the film, almost everything you see that matters you’ll see again in a different way. It’s a clever idea that they added in to make the film feel like there was more going on behind it… but the sad thing is it didn’t add up. Maybe if I was a Christian it would mean something, but all I saw was an attempt at a lot of symbols that never really went anywhere.
Control: There are a few times where you’ll wonder who is doing what to who and who is in control? Hopefully you’re not one who needs and answer because this film merely asks questions… LOTS of questions. Some of them are worth pondering, but not all.

The Bad:

Nothing was 100%: Everything felt like it was being slightly suggesting but never presented. There were so many symbols and ideas suggesting greater ideas, but nothing ever really added up to something substantial. All the symbolism needed to either be hidden deeper so that we had to discover it for ourselves or it had to be bigger and add up to something. Showing us things, without letting us find it and then having no great finale leaves you feeling jipped walking out of the theater.
Finale: After watching these characters go through so much there needed to be some kind of release. Some films can leave you pondering, some need to give you an answer — this film needed some kind of finale. All of these characters have a reason to put a gun in their mouth and pull the trigger and the actors to a good job at portraying that, so the story needed something to walk out of the theater with — unless that’s their message? And if so, it’s an interesting one, but not entirely pleasant.

Overall:

It kind of feels like the story let the film down even though it’s what built it up. The problem is there are a lot of good things here and this is a quality film, but it’s not an enjoyable one. The acting is worth seeing, if only for De Niro. Your call. It will leave you thinking, you just might not like the thoughts it leaves you with.

Rating: 6/10

Stone will be in theaters October 8th!

A couple weeks ago we brought you some behind the scenes photos from the set of Paul WS Anderson’s latest film The Three Musketeers. Today we have another batch that features someone we haven’t seen in a big movie in a while — Orlando Bloom. Remember the days when he was in and on everything? Now he’s back in full effect as a selfish Duke in Anderson’s film. You can see him as well as Christoph Waltz (wigged out) and Milla Jovovich below…

The story of The Three Musketeers centers on D’Artagnan (Lerman), a young man who leaves home to become a member of the fighting force of the French king’s royal household. Along the way, he makes friends with three of the force’s best — and most disgraced — members: Athos, Porthos and Aramis, whose creed of friendship is “All for one and one for all!” The story was published in 1844 and written by Alexandre Dumas.

It hurts me to say this but the costumes look gorgeous — uncomfortable but gorgeous. Also, Bloom is channeling the old French stereotype of evil with that hair and goatee. He might as well be wearing a sign that says, “I’m the villain.” Either way, I’m just happy to see him in a big production again.

The Three Musketeers is scheduled to hit theaters on April 15, 2011.

Weinstein Company Pays 3 Million for Dirty Girl

It was just confirmed that the Weinstein Company dropped $3 million on Abe Sylvia’s Dirty Girl at The Toronto International Film Festival following it’s first screening. Apparently once is enough if you’re a Weinstein! The film stars the soon to well known Juno Temple alongside Jeremy Dozier, Milla Jovovich, William H. Macy, Mary Steenburgen, Dwight Yoakam and Tim McGraw.

Harvey Weinstein seemed quite happy about his buy, he stated:

“I am thrilled to be part of such a sexy, edgy comedy that puts a modern spin on a coming-of -age story… It’s great to be back in business with some old friends and join forces with new and exciting talent and filmmakers.”

Written and directed by Sylvia, “Dirty Girl is the story of Danielle (Juno Temple), the dirty girl of Norman High School. When her misbehavior gets her banished to a remedial class, she teams up with an innocent closet-case and together they head out on a road trip to discover each other and themselves through a funny and serendipitous friendship.”

The film was not as successful with some of the critics, Katey Rich from Cinemablend wrote:

“Now I know Harvey and Bob Weinstein have championed some bizarre and doomed films over the years, but I cannot fathom why they paid more than a few nickels for Dirty Girl, an incredibly uneven and mean-spirited excuse for a comedy that wears out its welcome long before it veers sharply toward sentimentality in the third act.”

Ouch.

The deal was negotiated by David Glasser, Peter Lawson, Laine Kline for The Weinstein Company, and Graham Taylor and Mark Ankner of WME Global on behalf of the filmmakers.

The film was produced by Rob Paris, Jana Edelbaum and Rachel Cohen, with Ed Hart, Joan Huang, Christine Vachon, Pamela Koffler, Robert Bevan, Samantha Horley and Cyril Mégret serving as Executive Producers.

Milla Jovovich Confirms Resident Evil 5 – Nooooo!!!!

To the surprise of no one, Resident Evil Afterlife dominated this weekend’s box office coming in at number 1 with $73.2 million worldwide. There was no real competition to go up against the zombie flick, and with the increased price of 3D tickets, it was sure to turn a decent profit. According to star Milla Jovovich, Afterlife is the first Resident Evil to open at number 1 worldwide, and yes, there will be another one.

Jovovich recently spoke to Vulture after the film’s successful 3 day opening and stated, …”we’re definitely going to make another one.” She says that director Paul WS Anderson already has some ideas for what he wants to do for the fifth film and he wants to incorporate input from the audience.

“We’ve been talking to a lot of fans on Twitter and stuff, so it’s probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to see. It’s going to be a more interactive process.”

If they’re really taking fan’s ideas seriously, can they take this piece of advice, “stop making sequels.” A good chunk of the game’s fanbase doesn’t like the film series because it has very little to do with its source material. Sure there are zombies, and characters that we recognize but the storylines are picked apart and ripped to shreds. When we attended Comic-Con this year, a guy stood up during the Resident Evil panel and yelled, “You ruined my favorite game!”

Can someone please tell us why Claire appeared in RE: Extinction followed by her brother Chris in Afterlife when Chris was one of the main protagonists in the very first game? Didn’t Claire appear AFTER him? We guess he suffers from that Jill Valentine syndrome.

New Stone Poster Featuring Robert De Niro and Edward Norton

John Curran, the writer of The Killer Inside Me, and the director of The Painted Veil and We Don’t Live Here Anymore, bring us yet another tricky film to contemplate, Stone. The project was written by Angus McLachlan and directed by himself. We first saw a trailer for this film back in September ’09 (which we had to take down) and as of this summer they’ve updated their trailer and have finally been pushing the film for release.

Though the story seems to be the usual crime twist with Robert De Niro and Edward Norton, but once you add in Milla Jovovich’s character everything’s up in the air. If there’s one thing that’s for sure it’s that Curran knows how to take his audience on both physical and mental journeys.

Comic-Con 2010: Resident Evil: Afterlife 3-D First Look

Well, I guess they’re still making these movies. Director Paul W.S. Anderson, Milla Jovovich, and Ali Larter came out at Comic-Con to plug the new Resident Evil movie, which is in….get ready….3-D! We’re still excited by that, right? Listen, if you saw the 3rd, or even 2nd Resident Evil film, then nothing I can say will persuade you to avoid this one, so you might as well come on in and find out what they shared with us…

On top of the theatrical trailer that’s already been released, they unveiled a scene in which “The Executioner,” a bad guy from the Resident Evil 5 video game, battles the two leading ladies in what looks like a prison shower. Once the fighting starts the film starts moving in super slow motion. The giant axe wielding, nail faced bad guy starts blindly swinging his weapon, slicing pipes in half, sending water gushing everywhere. They jump around, slide through puddles, and send little droplets of water flying in all three dimensions. It looks so real! Just like water does in real life! Did you hear me? WATER! WOAH!

I’m sure the slow motion is intended to show off the glorious image of 3-D, but the scene drags on so slowly, and the fighting style is so plodding, that it gets extremely boring VERY quickly.

To its credit though, the film was shot on James Cameron’s Phantom 3-D camera system, so the effect was not simply a digital afterthought. When the president of Hollywood demanded more 3-D movies so they could charge 20% more for a crappy picture, Paul W.S. Anderson clearly had the vision to jump forward and say, “you know what would look great in 3-D? Brains!”

Robert De Niro and Edward Norton in Stone Trailer

Robert De Niro and Edward Norton reunite for the indie drama Stone, directed by John Curran. The Stone trailer debut today, and from the looks of it, the movie seems more like the story of a love-triangle with a crime twist. Movies with love-triangles are overrated, and sadly, it’s always the woman who’s called a whore, but when two men like De Niro and Norton are involved, all clichés go out the window, especially when the woman is Milla Jovavich. Stone is the story of a correctional officer (De Niro) who’s seduced by the wife (Jovavich) of a convicted arsonist (Norton) up for parole.

De Niro is getting older, but his roles of portraying powerful men aren’t over just yet. From the trailer, it seems that De Niro will be playing the type of character he knows how to play well. Norton’s character looks like your typical white male criminal, especially with those corn-roles on his head (you’ll have to watch to know what I’m talking about).

Overall, the trailer gives a off good vibe for the movie, but a lot of it has to do with Jovavich who looks like a real bad-ass by being in the middle of two great actors. She’s the real star of the trailer. Check it out!

New Resident Evil Afterlife Theatrical Trailer

A new trailer has been released for Paul WS Anderson’s latest zombie sequel, Resident Evil Afterlife. Unlike the teaser, this version actually gives us some insight into the story. Alice (Milla Jovovich) has learned a few new tricks and gained few new friends since the last time we saw her. Check out the trailer…

The trailer claims that the film was made with the best and latest 3D technology, yet the special effects look horrible. If the CGI looks bad, how can we trust the 3D? In terms of the story, Alice can clone herself now? There were a couple shots of her and one or two others who look like her in the middle of battle. That’s an interesting addition.

In Resident Evil Afterlife, Alice continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights, but Alice gets some unexpected help from an old friend. A new lead that promises a safe haven from the Undead takes them to Los Angeles, but when they arrive the city is overrun by thousands of zombies and Alice and her friends are about to step into a deadly trap.

When the first trailer for Resident Evil Afterlife debuted a few months ago it looked like a weak attempt at a zombie-filled Matrix and if you thought that was insulting, you ain’t seen nothing yet! Do you know that scene in The Matrix Reloaded where Trinity is falling out of a high rise with guns blazing? Alice does that in Afterlife too! Last week a few photos were released from Paul WS Anderson’s latest venture, Resident Evil: Afterlife. Today we’ve got several more to add to the bunch including the film’s first theatrical poster, which features Milla Jovovich as Alice. Alice (Jovovich) continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights, but Alice gets some unexpected help from an old friend. A new lead that promises a safe haven from the Undead takes them to Los Angeles, but when they arrive the city is overrun by thousands of Undead – and Alice and her comrades are about to step into a deadly trap.

If the film’s plot doesn’t peak your interest, here’s something that will: Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory) will be back! That’s right, the original (and real) female hero of the Resident Evil franchise will appear in the fourth film following her brief stint in Resident Evil: Apocalypse. This means we’ll get to see both of the original characters (Chris and Jill) from the video game in the same film at the same time. It’s about damn time!

Resident Evil Afterlife debuts in theaters on September 10, 2010.
