‘Fast Six’ Shoots Soon… Who’s In and Who’s Out

The cast of the Fast and Furious movies has become such that now each new film adds more players to the roster, along with past cast members who may or may not have been killed off in previous adventures. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Dwayne Johnson are due back, but what about the new players, and some of the people hinted at returning at the end of Fast Five?

Well, one is coming back and one isn’t. Michelle Rodriguez confirmed to Variety that she will be in the sixth entry, tentatively titled Fast Six, but we’ve also heard word that Eva Mendes- who cameoed in the last film – will not be joining the hunt. Screencrush asked the actress if she was in the film and she said no, though both left the possibility open that that could change.

Gina Carano, of Haywire fame, is in talks to join the film as a federal agent (typecasting) according to The Hollywood Reporter. We’ve also heard rumors about who’s been asked to play the villain. Rihanna – coming off of Battleship – has supposedly been asked to play a bad guy (according to The Sun), while Luke Evans has also been made an offer (according to Twitchfilm). How this all sorts out is anyone’s business. But here’s the stats:

Milla Jovovich Kills Zombies in the Resident Evil Retribution Trailer

Resident Evil Retribution is the fifth film in the franchise and reunites many of the series stars, including Milla Jovovich, Oded Fehr, Sienna Guillory, Jason Isaacs, and now Michelle Rodriguez – who was killed in the first film. Perhaps director Paul W.S. Anderson is going for that Fast Five feel. The film is due out September 14, but there’s a new trailer (to coincide with the release of the new Underworld film), and it’s partly an ad for Sony. Check it out…

What’s most noticeable is that it’s mostly an advert for its distribution company. Sure, it’s meant to a parody (“this is my world”), but it’s still blatant. The trailer itself is made up of the images of completed effects shots and glimpses of the returning cast members, and some action. There’s no real story here, but it’s safe to say that Jovovich shoots a bunch of zombies (possibly in slow motion).

The last Resident Evil film Afterlife was surprisingly successful – perhaps because it used 3-D in a time when audiences weren’t as cynical as they are now – and became the highest grossing film of the franchise. It made $60 Million domestically, but over $230 Million internationally, so it’s no surprise they’re back for more. And to be fair, this looks big. The franchise has been disposable since day one, but it’s also managed to pre-date the big zombie revival, and outlast it.

Casting Roundup: Christina Hendricks, Michelle Rodriguez, J.K. Simmons

We catch a lot of entertainment news here at ScreenCrave, but sometimes a few bits and pieces can fall between the cracks—which is why we’ve gathered together a few loose strands of recent casting news for you. From Christina Hendricks’ new role as Brendan Fraser’s spurned wife to the new Silent Hill: Revelation 3D (sigh) cast to the new roles for J.K. Simmons and Michelle Rodriguez, it’s been a busy week thus far:

According to Deadline, Mad Men bombshell Christina Hendricks will be taking advantage of her day job’s hiatus to star in Mike Figgis’ Seconds of Pleasure, which is set in an airplane “and connects the lives of people on the plane through vignettes.” Hendricks is set to portray a wife who catches her husband, played by Brendan Fraser, in a “compromising position.” The film will also star Julia Stiles, Matt Damon and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Because if a news post doesn’t mention a vampire film, we have to at least drop info on a 3D (it’s officially been signed into Hollywood law at this point), we’d be remiss not to mention that Silent Hill: Revelation 3D has been cast. /Film has it that Sean Bean, Radha Mitchell and Deborah Kara Unger have joined Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington to round out the film’s cast of actors who don’t mind being overshadowed by gimmicky used to increased ticket prices. So that’s cool.

In other horror film news, /Film reports that Michelle Rodriguez’s next flick is “a horror picture called The Home that takes place in a haunted nursing home. She says it will likely shoot in the summer as things are being set up now.” Kristoffer Aaron Morgan set to direct the “Lovecraftian” film in Austin, TX, which will also star Brian Cox, Cloris Leachman, Louise Fletcher, Louis Gossett Jr., Ed Asner, and Fionnula Flanagan.

Meanwhile, J.K Simmons will has joined the cast of Mark Wahlberg’s Contraband, according to /Film. The film “follows a one-time smuggler (Wahlberg) who has taken a straight job as a security guard, but gets pulled back into illegal activity.” Simmons has been cast as a captain in the movie.

Battle: Los Angeles – Movie Review

It’s time. Time for high body counts, mass hysteria, alien invaders, explosions, tanks, helos (I learned that’s what the Marine’s call a chopper!), machine guns and a hell of a lot one liners like “we’ve already had breakfast”! Hell yeah! Battle: Los Angeles hits theaters this weekend with a whole lot of blood-shed! This movie is basically a video game on the big screen. For those of you looking for a good popcorn flick with plenty of solid action, this film delivers. On the other hand if you’re looking for a solid story, you might be better off with Jane Eyre or last week’s The Adjustment Bureau. Let me explain…

The Plot:

The aliens are here!!! Send the Marines! Honestly, that’s all you need to know, the rest is just padding.

The Good:

Aaron Eckhart…’s chin: This man was MADE to play a war hero. He looks like he’s built of nails, he’s got just the right amount of stubble on that action-hero chin that could star in an film all by itself! He’s got the looks, he’s got the talent, he makes the special effects feel real — he was born to lead a film like this and it’s great to see him do it.
The Effects: If you’ve seen the trailer you know how great the effects are, the film is equally as good. Everything from the detail on the aliens to the on the ground action scenes where you feel like you’re inside a war are amazingly well done.
The One Liners: There’s nothing better than getting through a big battle and ending it with a cheesy one-liner, this film has a lot of battles and a lot of one-liners and I for one loved them.
Outsiders: No one knows what’s going on in the film, neither the audience of the characters. There is no higher power walking us through, no inside source that can help, you’re literally stuck in the middle of this war with an unknown entity, getting news the way anyone would, from watching “the news” and you’re left watching everything get destroyed with seemingly no way out — that’s the fun of this movie and there are times when they absolutely nail it.
The First Act: The film starts with one hell of a bang. Putting you in the world, not knowing what’s coming next and leaving you lost amongst the insanity. It’s a fun ride. Sadly it’s hard to keep up for 116 minutes.

The Bad:

Runtime: One of the most common problems with films of this size is that for some reason they all have to be nearly two hours for people to get their fill, which in turn means a lot of filler. This film would have been much better off at a high paced 90-95 minutes, without so much drama and unnecessary subplots..
The Drama: They’re obviously trying to give the film heart and I say “trying” because it’s extremely forced and shoe-horned in. The emotional scenes could have been more simple and therefore more effective than the seemingly forced sympathy they tried to pull from the audience.
Body Count: I would like to re-watch this film and keep a tally on the dead vs. the living. It looks like the whole platoon gets knocked out several times except there are always more people that seem to be left fighting. They’re like termites those humans! I’m not sure how this works, if anyone out there goes to see it and has an answer I’d love to know it!

Overall:

It’s not the best of it’s genre, but it’s got some solid actions scenes and would go nicely with a drink and popcorn.

Rating: 6.5/10

New Battle Los Angeles Trailer – Meet the Crew

Another trailer has been released for the upcoming action film Battle Los Angeles. If you haven’t seen the teaser or the first domestic trailer you should definitely check those out. The third version has debuted on Yahoo Movies and it shows LA getting ripped to shreds! If you hate the city and everything it’s known for this is the perfect film for you. Nothing is spared. Take a look…

Unlike the previous trailers, this one does a good job of establishing a lot of the characters. In the beginning it shows all the faces that we’ll see throughout the movie, including Eckhart’s character who’s the leader of the group. And even though Battle Los Angeles covers a genre and a topic that’s been explored to death, we’re still interested in seeing what the film has to offer.

One of the films promoted at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con was the action flick, Battle: Los Angeles. Prior to the panel, not much was known about the feature besides who starred in it and who directed it. They showed some footage to the attending audience that confirmed that it was an alien invasion flick that centered on a government cover up (no surprise there). Today the first trailer for Battle: Los Angeles has premiered conveniently on the day that Skyline hits theaters. Coincidence? We think not! Take a look…

Official Synopsis:

The build up in this trailer is ridiculous. Since there’s no real dialogue, the contrast between the music and footage is almost hypnotizing. You’re constantly waiting to see what the soldiers are fighting against and towards they end it gives you a glimpse but not the whole thing, which is good. You don’t want to reveal the physical form of the aliens just yet. Aside from that, it looks like Michelle Rodriguez is back to doing her tough girl, lone ranger routine, which we can’t knock because she’s good at it.

Hooking Up With Danny Trejo: Starring The Girls of Machete

Over the years Danny Trejo has made a living being the scariest, meanest, most badass ‘that guy’ in Hollywood. Need a psychotic Mexican to scare the shit out of a kid? Call Trejo. Need a stand-in to remind everyone not to ever, ever fuck with a guy who rocks a horseshoe mustache (while wearing leather) unless he taps your foot underneath the stall first? Dan’s your man.

Over time, we’ve gone from being vaguely weirded out by Trejo to wanting to model expensive glassware after his asymmetrical face. He’s not just a success story. He’s the success story. I move that we just skip the pretense and admit our man-crush and speculate over what woman from his new movie Machete deserves to be his arm candy. Contestants will be judged on personality, compatibility, and their kill factor. Why kill factor? If you’re around Danny Trejo, somebody always dies, that’s why.

Jessica Alba as Sartana

Compatibility: Trejo is a Robert Rodriguez stalwart, and Alba has been in more Rodriguez films (2) than any other contestant, and she has an uncanny knack for being half-naked in them. Point.
Personality: As a muse, she elicits a ‘damsel in distress’ trigger that’s both hypnotizing and galvanizing. Hypnotizing because you would have sex with her. Galvanizing because you would have sex with her. Point.
Kill Factor: Never underestimate the damsel in distress trigger – it makes guys lose their shit and forget the sixth commandment, the one about not murdering for the sake of a hot girl. Wherever she goes, she’s on the verge of turning any establishment into the lost footage of Road House, except with chainsaws and machetes instead of mullets and faux-kung fu. Point.

Lindsay Lohan as April

Compatibility: Very strong. In her first collaboration with Trejo, Lohan portrays a nun who likes to play with guns. Coincidence? No, because not unlike Lohan, Trejo comes from a conspicuous past in which something like that isn’t ironic in the least. However, Danny Trejo only needed one go around to flush the junkie-demons in his head. No Points.
Personality: To a more straight and narrow man, a nun with a gun would seem like a fundamental contradiction, but in Trejo’s world, cleaning up your act probably means joining the covenant and spreading the righteous hand of God with boobs and firearms. Point.
Kill Factor: Just look at that poster and try to convince yourself that that wouldn’t be how you would want to go – capped by a hot nun. That’s seduction, betrayal, and cold blooded of the fiercest order – a veritable honey trap for any dude that thinks with his cock. So…all of us. Point.

Michelle Rodriguez as Luz

Compatibility: Rodriguez is the closest female version of Trejo in Machete. Their date would start out like Indiana Jones meeting Marion in some faraway Tibetan bar in Raiders of the Lost Ark, but instead of apologies and pleasantries, this would only escalate with cerveza and severed heads until either one of them was dead. That or they’d drunkenly conceive a love child who would one day become the Federale messiah. 1/2 Point.
Personality: If the the old adage that opposites attract is remotely true, they’re both screwed. The scenarios wherein one of them doesn’t end up dead are few and far between. No Points.
Kill Factor: Judging by her past, Rodriguez knows how to recklessly handle heavy machinery and put lives at stake. Point.

Electra & Elise Avellan as Nurse Mona & Nurse Lisa

Compatibility: Twins. Sisters. Hot sisters. Nothing wrong with wanting to spread the love. This has all the makings of one of those Animal Planet specials, with the tagline being ‘watch and observe as Danny Trejo demonstrates his right to exercise polygamy with two girls who are just barely old enough to be a socially acceptable fantasy’. Point.
Personality: Who cares? Twins. 2 Points.
Kill Factor: Double the pleasure, double the fun, double the bodies. Killing isn’t so different from any other trade in that, scientifically, two heads are better than one, and four boobs better than two. 4 Points.

Mayra Leal as Chica

Compatibility: If the schlock-tastic trailer of Leal secreting a cell phone into her husband-hole is to be believed (and for the sake of holy shit!, we do believe it), Leal may be the only one of this bunch who might be able to dominate Danny Trejo in the bedroom, instead of vice-versa. No Points.
Personality: Not much is known about Leal, aside from her circus-bred snatch. X-factors usually don’t do well in these contests. Instead of growing a personality, they spent their youth learning how to do strange and terrible things with their vaginas. No Points.
Kill Factor: If she can incapacitate Danny Trejo while having a vibrating, beeping phone…holy shit. Point.

Rose McGowan as Cherry Darling

Compatibility: If you’re going to be around Danny Trejo, you have to know how to survive hairy situations, of which McGowan has only a so-so record (Scream = dead, Planet Terror = alive), so we’re not sure how she’d make out if Trejo gets a business call in between wine & dessert and has to intercept a hijacked Boeing 707 and eliminate every Lebanese terrorist on board before Chuck Norris does, and makes a movie about it called Delta Force. 1/2 Point.
Personality: McGowan is partially known in some circles as a grown-up version of one of the Mean Girls, and if Danny Trejo’s mustache is any indication, it’s that he has zero tolerance for catty B.S. Plus she hooked up with Robert Rodriguez, so, you know, awkward. No Points.
Kill Factor: If there’s anything nearly as impressive as Leal’s spacious vagina, it’s McGowan defying the laws of pretty much everything and mowing down soldiers with a gun for a leg. Point.

The Winner:

Tallying the scores, it’s the Allevan sisters, with an impressive seven boobs – I mean points – who take the cake!

Machete: Movie Review

Machete is an old school, grind house action flick with guns, knives, and a strong political undertone. The last description doesn’t really fit but that didn’t stop Robert Rodriguez from using this trailer turned film to vocalize his disdain for U.S. immigration policies. The filmmaker has a huge bone to pick but instead of addressing Congress, he’s taking his argument to the theater!

The Plot:

Machete follows an ex-federale who is betrayed by his superiors in his native Mexico. After years on the run, he ends up in Texas taking odd jobs to make ends meet. After taking down a tough street fighter he’s commissioned to assassinate a controversial politician who’s trying to crack down on illegal immigration. From that point on he finds himself embroiled in an “us vs them battle” between the Latin natives who are part of an underground community called “The Network” and a group of extremists who work for border patrol.

The Good:

The Characters: Every person in this film is an exaggeration of someone who really exists. The characters are all based on stereotypes. There’s the overzealous southern politician, the Mexican drug lord, the hard pressed cop, and of course the vigilante hero, whose blades are faster than bullets. That’s obviously the exaggerated part.
The Action: Gun play? Check! Explosions? Check! Knife fights? Hell yes! Machete has a lot of obscene and almost obnoxious action sequences that are filled with gore. There’s a reason the protagonist’s weapon of choice is a giant blade. He’s not trying to just get the job done. He’s trying to make a point.
The Story: Like I said earlier, the plot heavily leans on the current state of immigration in the U.S., specifically the cities near the Mexican border. This is an underdog story, not just for Machete but for his people. At times the political tone does get a bit heavy handed but it’s an entertaining way to shed light on the topic.

The Bad:

Jessica Alba: Why was she cast as the female lead? Her acting is unbelievable — literally she was UNBELIEVABLE. You don’t buy her as a immigration officer who’s torn between her allegiance to the law and to her people. Her performance didn’t feel genuine. Michelle Rodriguez (one of the highlights of the film) could have done a lot better with the role than Alba.
Steven Seagal: So this is why Seagal wasn’t in The Expendables? He plays a Mexican drug lord who’s also Machete’s arch enemy. Seagal is a shadow of his former self. His squinted gaze, bloated figure, and obvious hair piece was nothing more than a distraction when he appeared on screen. This is not the same guy from Hard to Kill. It just can’t be!
The Length: This movie was entirely too long. It was overextended by one too many villains. There’s always a guy, behind a guy, behind another guy, and then you get the real guy who’s pulling the strings. It takes forever for them to get to that point and when they do, we’re exhausted.

Overall:

If you liked Grindhouse, you’ll love Machete. It’s got sex, drugs, action, and low riders as far as the eye can see. If that’s your thing, this will be the perfect flick for you to spend your money on this Labor Day weekend.

Rating: 7.5/10

Comic-Con 2010: Battle Los Angeles’ Michelle Rodriguez on Avatar, Death

At the press conference for her new film, Battle: Los Angeles,which is described as a cross between Black Hawk Down and Alien by director Jonathan Liebesman, Michelle Rodriguez sounded off about what James Cameron thinks about animated character replacing actors and why she gets killed off in every movie.

Asked about the possibility of actors eventually being replaced by real life avatars, Rodriguez instantly bristled:

Rodriguez: I’d like to make a note, people don’t understand because they weren’t there. I was there. I saw what Jim did with Avatar and what the future of film is in his eyes. What he wanted to transition to was respect toward the actor because you are literally looking at an enhancement of the actor’s performance. You are not looking at some guy who’s an animator creating the emotions or performance. The dots are on all the parts of your face and you have a camera staring at you. It’s the actor’s performance. That’s something I think a lot of people don’t understand because there’s a lot of work that was placed behind it. Eventually, over the years, it’ll become a lot easier to do [that kind of animation], a lot cheaper and it’ll take a lot less time. But directors who know what it’s all about, like Jim and Jonathan, know it’s about the human soul shining through into whatever story it is you’re trying to tell. Actors aren’t going anywhere.

Damn, Gina. Simmer down. We’re with you; if we want to see animated acting, we’ll go to whatever new movie Pixar is putting out, not rent Beowulf. No need to get so testy. Surprisingly, she was much perkier when asked the question: “Why does Michelle Rodriguez always die in every movie?”

Rodriguez: Because I don’t rip my clothes off and I’m nobody’s girlfriend! (Clapping her hands and laughing hysterically) Hahaha! A lot of writers are new to the whole tough girl thing. They don’t know what to do with a chick. If she’s got character and she’s strong, it’s sort of like, ‘Well, we’ve got the dude who’s strong, so what do we do with the chick who does that? Kill her. Duh.’ Eventually they’ll get used to it. Maybe Salt will change a thing or two.”

Having seen Salt, we can say with total certainty that the only thing that film’s going to do is alter Angelina Jolie’s bankability and credibility. That movie gives ass-kicking women everywhere a bad name.

Comic-Con 2010 – Battle: Los Angeles Interview – Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez

Today at Comic-Con, Battle: Los Angeles will be screening some of the first, never before seen footage from the film (check out our live coverage) but before that happened, we had a chance to sit down to a press conference with the director of the film Jonathan Liebesman, executive producer Neal Moritz and the two leading stars Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez. From the sounds of it, this movie will be alien infestation pieces much like like District 9 (which is interesting seeing as the director of this film is also South African like Neil Blommkamp), with a touch of Alien, and a dash Roland Emmerich destruction spice thrown into the mix.

Machete Cinco de Mayo Trailer Premiere

Robert Rodriguez is a marketing genius! In honor of Cinco de Mayo, the director decided to release an “illegal” teaser for his upcoming film Machete. Do you remember that grainy trailer that appeared during Grindhouse that was sandwiched between Death Proof and Planet Terror? Yeah, he made a feature length movie out of that. Take a look…

The folks over at AICN got first dibs on the new trailer that features a special introduction by its star Danny Trejo. The actor will be joined by a supporting cast that includes Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson and Jeff Fahey just to name a few.

Besides Trejo, Marin is another actor who consistently appears in Rodriguez’s films and to see him as a gun toting priest is classic. Also, is it just us or does De Niro look like he’s showing some range in his role as the Senator? It’s been such a long time since we’ve seen him step outside the box and he looks damn good here.

There are so many things to like about this trailer but our favorite is the small credit given to Don Johnson. It says “Introducing” in front of his name as if he hasn’t been in the film industry for 40 years already. The irony!

Michelle Rodriguez Returning to Lost For Final Season

Michelle Rodriguez has been added to the final season of “Lost” as one of the many returning cast members who’ve appeared on the show during its six year run. The actress made her debut back in season 2, but left to focus on her feature film career. According to EW, she’ll return to her old TV stomping grounds one last time before ABC pulls the plug.

If you haven’t caught up on “Lost,” or you’re thinking about getting into the show, this post includes spoilers so enter at your own risk. Spoilers: Rodriguez starred as Ana Lucia on the series, but unfortunately got killed off at the end of season 2. She did manage to make a brief appearance in season 5 in one of Hurley’s visions but other than that she’s been M.I.A. Rodriguez is the latest of many actors from the dead past who’ll be returning to the show including Maggie Grace, Cynthia Watros, and Rebecca Mader.

I’m assuming that all of these characters like Ana Lucia will appear in the alternate timelines, since that’s where two other goners (Boone and Charlie) popped up earlier this season. Sources close to the show say that she will appear in at least one episode before the show wraps. I think it’s interesting that all of these dead people are getting the opportunity to wrap up old storylines. Will the same happen for Paulo and Nikki? Ha! Just kidding, no one cared about those two.
