- The Walking Dead logged 7.3 million viewers last night for AMC’s zombie show. That’s the highest rated basic cable in the history of basic cable, says Variety. Word has been somewhat mixed on the pilot (we reviewed it), but the Halloween timing and these ratings assure a third season.

- Speaking of renewals, Sons of Anarchy has been given the greenlight for a fifth season.

Did you see The Thing? The prequel to The Thing? Did you watch The Thing cast watch The Thing? I sound like David Mamet hear, Check out the video of the The Thing watching The Thing and more news after the jump.

- Michael Moore’s talking about a new movie because of Occupy Wall Street, or at least that’s what he said to The Wrap.

- Deadline Hollywood tells us that they’re making a Micronauts movie. Great.

- Months before the release of the first Avengers, they’re talking about Avengers 2 to Hollywood Reporter, and who might be in it. I guess it pays to dream big.

- Melissa McCarthy (of Bridesmaids and Mike and Molly) now has a script at New Line called Tammy. It’s supposedly raunchy. So they’ll be more of that.

- Sarah Polley’s Take this Waltz has been picked up by Magnolia pictures. A fest hit, this is good news, all things. Expect it in 2012.

- Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s The Last Stand has added Johnny Knoxville and Forest Whitaker to the cast, along with legend Harry Dean Stanton.

What makes you happiest to hear of all this news (that has been rounded up)?

Michael Moore’s angry again and this time the Weinsteins are on the receiving end of his wrath. The Oscar winning director has a bone to pick with the producing duo over his 2004 film Fahrenheit 9/11. He recently filed a lawsuit against Harvey and Bob Weinstein regarding the film and (you guessed it) the money they earned.

Moore claims that the Weinsteins have cheated him out of a $2.7 million profit generated from his documentary.

“The suit claims the Fellowship Adventure Group — the company the Weinstein brothers formed specifically to release Moore’s white-hot button documentary, in partnership with Lionsgate and IFC Films — and Moore agreed to a 50/50 split of the profits from the film, but the Fellowship Adventure Group “failed and refused to share equally in the fruits of the venture as the partners agreed.” (Fahrenheit 9/11 brought in $222.4 million in worldwide box office, and remains the highest-grossing documentary of all time.) The suit is also seeking punitive damages.”

The Weinstein’s aren’t taking this suit lying down. When EW contacted their legal representation Bert Fields, he stated that Moore has earned more than $20 million from Fahrenheit and “he’s not entitled to another dime.” If that wasn’t harsh enough, he went on to call the lawsuit “absolute baloney.” If that’s not professional, we don’t know what is.

What do you think of Moore vs the Weinsteins? Who should win?

In celebration of his latest film, Capitalism: A Love Story, Michael Moore himself is inviting the jobless and homeless to a free screening of his new documentary in America’s hardest hit cities Baltimore, Tampa, Fresno, Peoria and many more. He has also set up benefit screenings in surrounding cities to help raise money for communities in need.

I’m not sure exactly how you have to prove that you are jobless or homeless, but I’m sure it won’t be to big of a problem.

Check out the letter from Moore himself…

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Friends,

We’re just one day away from the widest opening I’ve ever had for any of my movies. Tomorrow, Friday, October 2nd, “Capitalism: A Love Story” opens on over a thousand screens across the United States, a record for an independent documentary.

This follows last weekend’s limited opening in New York and L.A. where “Capitalism” set the box office record for the highest per screen average of ANY movie released so far this year. Not just any documentary — any MOVIE! It was, as the studio said, a good indicator of just how well the movie may do when it goes wide this weekend. I sincerely hope they’re right because I believe deeply in this film.

To kick off the national release of “Capitalism: A Love Story,” I’ve asked the studio to offer a number of screenings in the nation’s hardest hit cities — the ones with the highest unemployment rates and highest foreclosure rates — where those who’ve lost their jobs or who are in foreclosure (or have already been evicted) may attend my film free of charge. They’ve agreed, and so tonight (Thursday), the night before our opening day, ten cities will grant you free admission if you have fallen on hard times. The list of theaters and cities is below. You don’t need to bring any “proof” of your situation — just show up — it’s the honor system, no questions asked.

Of course, a free movie ain’t much when what you really need is a job or a place to live. And that’s not going to change until the party that controls both the Congress and the White House wakes up and realizes the American people put them in charge to fix the mess created by the previous administration. For that to happen requires the active involvement of each of us. And, as I show in this movie, it’s going to also require us to challenge some fundamental assumptions about an economic system that currently allows the wealthiest ONE PERCENT in this country to have more financial wealth than the bottom 95% combined. That concentration of money and power in the hands of so few people is, I believe, at the core of so many of our problems.

So, if you’re going through tough times and you live in one of the areas below, please be my guest tonight, on the eve of my new film’s opening. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis.

Also, in another five cities tonight, I have made the film available to local groups to hold benefit screenings to raise money for their local organizations — organizations which are working toward a day when a filmmaker doesn’t have to offer free screenings to people who’ve been put through the wringer. If you live in any of these areas (see below for the list of benefit premieres tonight), please come out and support the good work of these grassroots groups.

So, until tomorrow, thanks for your support, and I’ll see ya at the movies!

Yours,
Michael Moore

Michael Moore‘s latest documentary Capitalism: A Love Story has run its course with festival judges and critics, and has racked up its fair share of controversy. It’s a Michael Moore film, would you expect anything less? The Associated Press recently posted an article that takes some of the director’s largest claims from the film and runs them against a fact checker. It’s an interesting read, so find out what’s rooted in truth, and what’s all smoke and mirrors.

One of Moore’s largest opponents besides the overall government is Wall Street. According to him, brokers have robbed tax payers of their hard earned money. In the film, Moore showed up at the the headquarters of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. claiming that they owe tax payers 10 billion dollars.

The Facts: Three months after that scene was shot, Goldman Sachs was one of 10 large banks that repaid in June some $68 billion they received from the $700 billion Troubled Assets Relief Program. Since then other large financial companies have repaid funds, too, including Chrysler Financial and American Express Co.

Another big issue in the film is the ugly truth behind insurance policies that benefit companies after their employees die.

The Facts: One of the main culprits involved in such an act is Walmart, who earned a $81,000 life insurance payout when a 26 year old employee of theirs suddenly died. But it’s never mentioned in the body of the film that in 2000 the world’s largest retailer canceled all 350,000 of these policies it took out on employees between 1993 and 1995.

You can’t leave politicians unscathed in any Michael Moore film so he had to highlight the fact that government officials unfairly and hypocritically benefit from financial programs not available to all. “He asserts that Senator Chris Dodd received more than $1 million in discounted loans for being a “Friend of Angelo,” referring to Angelo Mozilo, the former CEO of Countrywide Financial Corp. That lender, which was heavily involved in the subprime-mortgage business, was sold last year to Bank of America.”

The Facts: Dodd has acknowledged that he participated in a VIP program at Countrywide, refinancing loans on two homes in 2003. One was a 30-year adjustable rate loan for $506,000 with an interest rate of 4.25 percent and a fee of 0.45 percent. He also got a 30-year adjustable rate mortgage for $275,042 with an interest rate of 4.5 percent and a fee of 0.73 percent.

Last month, the Senate’s Select Committee on Ethics cleared Dodd and Kent Conrad of North Dakota of getting special treatment on the mortgages. But the bipartisan panel also said the senators should have “exercised more vigilance” in their dealings with Countrywide to avoid the appearance of sweetheart deals.

Are any of us really surprised at this? They’re not boldface lies, a lot of stuff happened after the film wrapped. Some stories are only told from a specific point of view, but isn’t that the basis of any documentary? I’m sure once the film is released more arguments will need to be made.

What do you think about the fact-checking done on Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story?

Michael Moore has made a controversial and successful career off directing documentaries that ask the tough questions. His latest film, Capitalism: A Love Story takes us back into the world of politics and corruption as only he knows how. With such success in the documentary genre of filmmaking, what’s keeping the director from crossing over into the world of the narrative? According to Yahoo, Capitalism may be his last reality based project.

While out promoting the film at the Toronto International Film Festival, Moore spoke about his long career and how he may need a change of pace.

“I’ve done this for 20 years. I started out by warning people about General Motors, and my whole career has been trying to say the emperor has no clothes here, and we better do something about it,” Moore said. “I’ve been having to sort of knock my head against the wall here for 20 years saying these things.”

The director went on to reference his last project Sicko, which was an investigation of healthcare in the U.S., as a major eye opener for him.

“Two years ago, I tried to get the health-care debate going, and it did eventually, and now where are we? We may not even have it. What am I supposed to do at a certain point?”

Even though his tone during this discussion was a bit glib, he neither confirmed or denied whether or not he’d make the shift to Hollywood filmmaking. He just voiced his frustration at the fact that the U.S. as a whole isn’t stepping up to help change some of these long standing issues.

“I am tired of feeling like I’m doing this alone. All through the eight years of Bush, you Google Bush’ and `nemesis’ and I’m the first name up. And there aren’t a whole lot of other names,” Moore said. “It doesn’t work with Michael Moore and Sean Penn and Ted Kennedy and a few others. The people have got to get involved in their democracy.”

Even though Michael Moore is known for his one-sided documentary style, we’re all aware of the atrocities that are happening behind the scenes within out government. What will he come up with next?

Do you think Moore should stop doing documentaries?

Michael Moore is back after a few years out of the spotlight. Known for his politically charged documentaries, the director’s next feature will fit in nicely with his previous work. Capitalism: A Love Story is his latest film that focuses on the financial crisis that the U.S. has been dealing with for the past few years. It opens in theaters nationwide on October 2nd, but several early reviews have already been released due to its run at a few major film festivals.

On the suffering economy.

Moore has assembled a collection of nearly unbelievable horror stories to illustrate why capitalism and democracy do not go hand in hand, like a privately owned juvenile correctional facility, which paid the local judge to jail teens for misdemeanors. Even the Catholic Church is marshaled in support of his argument, and Moore finds several priests and a bishop who condemn capitalism as an immoral and incompatible with Jesus and the Bible. [Canada.com]

On corporate Greed.

There’s a lot to infuriate you, even without the classic Moore antics. We’ve got Wal Mart buying life insurance policies on their workers, who get large payouts while the families of these employees struggle to pay the bills. And this bubbles out into a larger big corporation mentality where these policies are called “dead peasant” insurance. There are privatized juvenile detention centers where detaining youths becomes the primary goal, no matter what their crime. And how about pilots who fly the planes we take across country … They only make 17-20k per year – less than a Taco Bell manager. [Collider]

Is this a typical Michael Moore documentary?

The film is also frustratingly one-sided and ignores factual and tonal inconsistencies in favor of creating an entertaining whole. It’s a shamelessly manipulative movie, but it’s hard to criticize Moore for that because that’s simply his style of filmmaker. You go to a Michael Moore movie to hear his side of an issue, much like you go to a Michael Bay movie to see candy-colored cinematography and things blowing up in slow motion. [Martiniboys]

What does the film really expose?

There are heartbreaking vignettes of foreclosed families, one after another across the country. And then there’s the interview with a guy whose company is called “Condo Vultures,” and is happily in the business of buying up and reselling foreclosed properties. As he explains it, the only thing that separates him from a real vulture is that he doesn’t vomit on himself (his idea of a joke). [LATimes]

Does he bring up President Obama?

The film also maintains a delicate ambivalence about President Obama, casting him as a change agent and depicting joyous images of his victory last November, but also implying that Wall Street had showered money on Obama’s campaign in an effort to buy him out. The question of whether it had succeeded in doing so are left more or less unanswered. [WashingtonPost]

He mixes sensationalism with facts.

Moore walks us through the so-called “dead peasants” life insurance policies that companies take out on their employees — not for the families, but to enrich corporate coffers. There are charts and graphs and news clips explaining how Wall Street took over Washington, how the disparity between rich and poor grew so wide. And there is the trademark Moore guerrilla-warfare stunts: the filmmaker wrapping Citibank, Chase, et al in yellow crime scene tape, trying to make a citizen’s arrest of their boards of directors. [LATimes]

Capitalism: A Love Story delivers exactly what you’d expect from a Michael Moore movie about the current economic crisis. It’s unclear how much longer the now quite wealthy Moore will be able to position himself as the voice of the working man, but no one else was more qualified to make a movie on this subject matter than him. Love it or hate it, this is vital viewing. [Martiniboys]

Do you get what you pay for?

The value of Capitalism, A Love Story is not in the moviemaking, it’s in the message, and the release that it gives to those struggling right now. In the future, the movie probably won’t hold as a piece of classic filmmaking, but right now it will hit you in the gut, make you angry, and make you laugh. [Collider]

There you have it. The early reviews are in, and they’re not far off from what I expected. It sounds like good old-fashioned Michael Moore fun to me.

What do you think of the reviews for Michael Moore’s latest film? Will you go see Capitalism: A Love Story?

Every couple of years Michael Moore comes out with a brilliantly slanted documentary about a government institution taking advantage of the average Joe. In Capitalism: A Love Story, he chooses to focus on money, money, and more money. A new trailer has debuted through CNN of all places, and it brings back all my memories of Sicko and Bowling for Columbine in one fowl swoop. You can view the new theatrical trailer for Capitalism: A Love Story below.

This film will “explore the root causes of the global economic meltdown and take a comical look at the corporate and political shenanigans that culminated in what Moore has described as “the biggest robbery in the history of this country” – the massive transfer of U.S. taxpayer money to private financial institutions.”

As you can tell from the trailer, Moore is attacking Wall Street and is naming names. With the recent failures of AIG, and the global economy no one is safe from his investigative filmmaking, or comedic jabs. The film wreaks of conspiracy, and I love every minute of. I’m a sucker for a good old fashioned working class versus upper class battle.

Capitalism: A Love Story debuts in theaters everywhere on October 2nd.

Love is in the air. Michael Moore has revealed the title of his new documentary — in which he explores the roots of the economic meltdown — Capitalism: A Love Story.

Moore says:

“It will be the perfect date movie. It’s got it all — lust, passion, romance, and 14,000 jobs eliminated every day. It’s forbidden love, one that dare not speak its name. Heck, let’s just say it: It’s capitalism.”

According to Variety, this love story will focus on “the disastrous impact that corporate dominance and out-of-control profit motives have on the lives of the Americans and citizens of the world.”

The film is set to be released on October 2nd — a year and a day after the U.S. senate approved a $700 billion bailout of Wall Street.

Moore is among one of the most successful documentarist having made three of the op six highest-grossing documentaries of all time — Sicko, Fahrenheit and Bowling for Columbine.

With most of U.S. focusing on the economic meltdown, and people loosing more and more of their jobs each day, it’s no surprise that Moore chose to focus his next documentary on a subject so unpleasantly popular, and this film will probably become another highly successful film in Moore’s list of documentaries.

What do you think of the title?

It’s that time again. Every few years or so we get a strongly angled documentary from Oscar winner Michael Moore. Even though some people hate the guy and complain about his premeditated agenda, I think he makes good movies. His film making skills plus the fact that he is a fellow Michigan native like myself, forces me to give him the benefit of the doubt. The last film Moore directed was 2007′s Sicko, and according to /Film he’s looking to follow that up with a feature that will focus on the current economic crisis.

The effects of a bad economy isn’t a new topic for Moore considering his 1989 debut film Roger & Me focused on the same thing. The only difference is the problem was centered on the financial collapse in his hometown of Flint, Michigan where as his next project will focus on the effect at a much larger scale. The film doesn’t have a title as of yet, but it will be released on October 2, 2009. The official press release for the feature was released today and it gave the following description:

It will “explore the root causes of the global economic meltdown and take a comical look at the corporate and political shenanigans that culminated in what Moore has described as “the biggest robbery in the history of this country” – the massive transfer of U.S. taxpayer money to private financial institutions.”

Sounds like heavy stuff. Moore himself had a few words to say about the film, and what he thinks is at the heart of the economic crisis.

“The wealthy, at some point, decided they didn’t have enough wealth. They wanted more — a lot more. So they systematically set about to fleece the American people out of their hard-earned money. Now, why would they do this? That is what I seek to discover in this movie.”

I’ve seen plenty of special reports and television bulletins about the economy and how much it stinks. Moore’s perspective seems to focus more on the evolution of greed as it compares to the rise of poverty. Interesting.

What do you think about Michael Moore’s upcoming project?

What does Sir Ian McKellen have to say about The Hobbit? A few things. Mainly, he doesn’t know much about it. As he says “When Del Toro was appointed director, I thought, ‘Well, it’s his ‘Hobbit,’ and he may have different ideas. He may want a different sort of look all together.’” So we’ll have to wait and see!
Will Michael Moore’s next project be about the bailout? He says: “The important thing here is for you to step up as an American and do your duty of shedding some light on this financial collapse. A few good people have already come forward, which leads me to believe there are many more of you out there who know what’s going on. Here’s your chance to let your fellow citizens in on the truth.” Check out the full story on /Film
