Even The Posters For ‘Prometheus’ Are Spoiler-Heavy Now

Until very recently, part of the fun of Prometheus’ ad campaign was just how ambiguous the marketing was for Ridley Scott’s semi-prequel to his 1979 classic, Alien. Was it a true prequel? Would it connect directly to the beginnings of Alien? And so on. And then, unfortunately, came the spoilers. In April, we received a three-minute trailer of pure spoilage, followed by a featurette with even more information. Gone were the intriguing puzzles and air of mystery that made Prometheus so anticipated in the first place. And now, even the poster campaign is spoiling the fun (and the plot).

We know that the film deals at least in part with the crescent-shaped spaceship helmed by the Space Jockey that was seen during the original Alien. Recent clips have even shown the Space Jockey attacking members of the Prometheus crew. Now, thanks to an international poster, we get to see the Space Jockey’s ship, well, exploding above the crew. Which seems to be, oh gosh, I don’t know, kind of a significant plot point to drop in the middle of a wildly photoshopped worldwide poster. But hey, that’s just me.

Hopefully, this action-oriented one-sheet will draw in moviegoers more attracted to things going boom than they are to quietly creepy and ambiguous sci-fi puzzle boxes; that said, it’s sad to see the air of mystery and ambiguity dissipate from Prometheus. It’s still one of our most anticipated films of 2012’s summer; we just wish it was a little less forthcoming with the details.

17 New ‘Prometheus’ Pictures Feature Alien World, Haunted Crew

It seems like every day there’s been a new bit of media released to promote The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, or Prometheus as the Big Summer Film of 2012. Today, it’s once again Prometheus’ turn, with Entertainment Weekly releasing 17—count ‘em, 17!—new photos from the filming of Prometheus. The shots feature character portraits, behind the scenes shooting, alien landscapes, spacesuits, and repeated shots of a haunted and haggard crew.

While the plot remains a tightly-kept mystery, what is known about the film is that it takes place several years prior to the events of Ridley Scott’s original Alien film, and takes place on the same planet featured in that movie. Not much else is know, except the crew of a vessel called Prometheus discover a threat connected to humanity’s origins that also threatens to bring about our doom… at least, that’s what we could suss out from the spoiler-ish trailer.

Looks like we’ll just have to wait until the film’s June 8 release date to be sure. Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Idis Elbra and Guy Pearce, and was directed by Ridley Scott.

Latest ‘Prometheus’ Featurette Talks Aliens (Not ‘Alien’)

Prometheus may be R rated, but it’s gunning to be one of the big event films of the summer, and the advertising and viral videos are now hitting the frequency of Avengers material. Perhaps it’s a winning strategy. The latest from the Prometheus cast and crew concerns extra terrestrials. An interesting word choice for the (not?) prequel to Alien. Check out the featurette below.

This is definitely not spoiling too much (for those concerned about that), and it doesn’t offer too much new footage, but it does show some of what’s going to be the problem for the crew of the Prometheus. There is something on the planet that either attacks or takes over host bodies. But how this all plays out is still unknown, or how the creatures once fossilized in Alien interact with the humans.

When Fox accepted the R rating, it suggested that this would not be compromised, and with the R rating, one wonders if they’ve decided to add things back in they may have cut when they were angling for a PG-13. One hopes. Though Ridley Scott‘s last couple of movies have been a mixed bag (Robin Hood was pretty bad), we’re still partial to his director’s cut of Kingdom of Heaven, and he still seems to ‘have it.’ So we’re anxiously awaiting June 8, when the film hits theaters.

Latest ‘Prometheus’ Featurette Reveals Even More

For a while there you could say that Ridley Scott’s Prometheus was playing cute. It was embracing one of J.J. Abrams‘s favorite marketing schemes – the puzzle box – where part of the fun was not knowing what the film exactly was until you got into the theater. That game plan has been modified for marketing recently, and now we’re getting a clearer sense of what the film is. And for those who weren’t spoiled by the latest trailer, the new featurette offers even more footage and clues. Check it out…

We get interviews here with Scott, and stars Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace, along with Logan Marshall-Green, for whom this seems his big shot (and he also kind of looks like Tom Hardy, but maybe that’s just me).

The featurette is selling the old school in that it’s showcasing the scale of the sets. In the digital era, it’s nice to see a film have such massive working space because it does make a difference when encountering an alien space to have that reality behind the actors.

Looking up the film on IMDb, it lists Patrick Wilson as one of the stars. He plays Noomi Rapace’s father. My guess is it’s a small role, but the IMDb is the IMDb. The film is set come out June 8, and it’s easily one of the most exciting films of the summer, and it’s playing the same clips and featurette games as The Avengers has. Which means expect a lot more of this stuff in the next month.

New ‘Prometheus’ Trailer Features Three Minutes Of Heavy Spoilers

Welcome to the exact moment when Ridley Scott’s upcoming Prometheus ceased to be the ambiguous sci-fi mystery of the summer, and revealed just about every possible plot spoiler pertaining to its Alien prequel-dom that it seemingly possibly could. Thanks to a just-released international trailer, we now have three full minutes that basically lay out Prometheus’ entire plot—don’t want to know about Charlize Theron’s character? Not curious who has an alien inside of them? A warning, then: view this at your own risk.

For the last time: spoilers ahead!

The trailer basically lays bare many of the plot details that have been debated by fans of the Alien series in the weeks and months leading up to Prometheus’ release. Yes, it now appears that Theron’s corporate heavy will be a villain, just like Paul Reiser’s character in Aliens. Yes, Noomi Rapace is a badass of Sigourney Weaver levels. And yep, that’s Rapace screaming “GET IT OUT OF ME! GET IT OUT OF ME!” repeatedly. And yep, there’s heavy talk of some kind of alien force heading back to hit the Earth.

Just about the only thing not revealed in the trailer is whether or not Michael Fassbender’s mysteriously emotional android character will be a friend, or will go the way of Ash in the original Alien. And while this trailer is certainly, well, cool, it’s more than a little disappointing to see most of Prometheus’ cards all laid out on the table like this—part of the primary appeal to the film, thus far, has been its sense of foreboding mystery.

Final verdict: it’s still one of our most anticipated films of 2012, but some of the excitement over Prometheus has now been lose thanks to the overly vigorous marketing.

New ‘Prometheus’ Viral Ad Features Michael Fassbender’s Android Infomercial

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is currently running neck and neck (or space helmet and bat-cowl, if you like) with The Dark Knight Rises for the title of Most Mysterious Action Film of Summer 2012. More and more plot elements, both leaked and featured in the excellently spooky trailer, indicate that Prometheus is a full-on prequel to Scott’s 1979 sci-fi horror classic, Alien…and a newly released Prometheus viral ad posing as an android infomercial, only serves to strengthen the connection to the original Alien.

In the pseudo infomercial advertising the benefits of androids—specifically, the “David” model portrayed by Michael Fassbender in Prometheus—we learn that the androids of Prometheus’ future have been created by the Weyland Corporation. For those of you who don’t obsess over such things, the Weyland Corp is one half of the fictional (and evil) Weyland-Yutani megacorporation behind the most of the human misdeeds in Alien and Aliens.

In another callback to the original Alien, David notes that he is capable of actions that most humans would be uncomfortable with, including dangerous or unethical acts, which seems like a definite nod to Ash, the deranged android from the original film; further, the fact that David begins to cry when he states he is incapable of human emotion doesn’t exactly speak well of the artificial man’s stability.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until June 8^th to find out if any of these connections hold water. Until then, we must stay strong, and use the internet for the one thing it was designed for: ceaseless, unfounded speculation about movies that will be released in the next 6-8 weeks.

News Roundup: Michael Fassbender’s Oscar Snub, Hulk Hogan Comes Clean and More

This week Hulk Hogan finally came clean and admitted that Darren Aronofsky wanted him to play the lead role in the 2008 critical hit The Wrestler. The role that reignited Mickey Rourke‘s career was originally meant for Hogan, at least according to Hogan. Also this week were the Oscar nominations: while many great performances were acknowledged, many were snubbed by the Academy including Michael Fassbender, who was hailed for his performance in Shame. The Los Angeles Times took a closer look at why the actor might’ve been left out of the running. We also have a couple of movie previews. Catch up below.

Michael Fassbender’s Penis: Among the many who got snubbed by the Academy is actor Michael Fassbender, who, this year, portrayed a sex addict in Steve McQueen‘s NC-17 rated Shame. The Los Angeles Times wrote an article about the actor suggesting he was snubbed because showing his penis on film took away from his “super-brave” performance.
Hulk Hogan Fantasies: Hulk Hogan told Digital Spy recently that he was asked, not once, but several times, to play the role that reignited Mickey Rourke’s career. That’s right, after four years of silence, Hogan said that he turned down the lead role in The Wrestler because he felt he wasn’t right for the role. Could you imagine Hogan playing such a serious and dramatic role? Do you believe that Darren Aronofsky wanted him to play Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson?
Movies In An Alternate Universe: Artist Sean Hartter invented this cool concept where he took titles of current well-known movies, but remade them so that the movie’s poster suggested a different time or era. An example of one film is 2011′s Drive, where James Dean has taken Ryan Gosling‘s place. It’s actually pretty cool. Head over to Behance to see the cool posters.

Trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus

Quick of cut and huge of scale, the trailer for Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus ties the film into his 1979 film Alien in two distinct ways. One is the lettering that comes as we get quick flashes of cast members Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace and Idris Elba. The other is a certain prop that looks mighty familiar to fans of the original. Check out the trailer…

What this film is seems still up for grabs. The characters are humans (“They went looking for our beginning”), I guess, and there seems to be a lot of large scale sets, and great science fiction atmosphere. But what’s going on is completely up for grabs, and it’s hard to know if the film follows the original’s Ten Little Indians structure. The cast listing says “and Charlize Theron” which could mean she’s the first or last to go.

This doesn’t seem to offer much Guy Pearce, but to be fair no one gets any on screen dialogue, and this seems to be more about setting a tone, which is the new trailer goal. That tone is “it’s a little like the first film, but much more fast paced and jump scary.” Supposedly this is the first of two of these films.The film comes out June 8, 2012.

Take a Better Look at Ridley Scott’s Prometheus

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is and isn’t a sequel/prequel to his 1979 film Alien. And though it may not feature Alien creatures as we know them from the previous installments, from the latest images to come from the film it’s going to have the same look and feel that’s for sure. The film is due out June, 8 2012, but the first wave of publicity is starting to hit, with new images below. Check out the gallery.

First of all, let me say I like the identifications on these because it makes them look like old school lobby cards. And were these images weathered down, some might look like they came from the first movie.

This is our first good look at the cast, and it will be interesting to see how much the film mimics the structure of the first film. Likely the majority of the cast won’t make it until the end, so it’s quite possible Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace or Charlize Theron are there to provide the shock of an early exit. But my guess is they’ll try to keep such surprises close to the vest. A bootleg trailer leaked over the weekend, which means that a full trailer should be attached to one of the bigger Holiday movies. Since it’s Fox, the best guess is that it will be on Alvin and the Chipmunks 3: Chipwrecked.

Shame: Movie Review

This week in theaters, Shame, the already multiple award-winning film, directed by Steve McQueen and starring Michael Fassbender hits theaters with a whole lot of sex, emotion and fine filmmaking. McQueen and Fassbender have already proved that they’re a powerful duo with Hunger and now they’re back to show us what they’re made of. The NC-17 rating will likely scare away some viewers, but it really shouldn’t. The topic of this film is extremely relevant to a major societal issue taking place today, and the way the film is shot (nudity and all) represents the honest and raw portrayal of the emotions of the story you’re seeing on screen. It’s a provocative film in many ways and well worth checking out, that is, if you’re willing to go on the journey…

The Plot:

A sex addict struggles with maintaining his way of life as his job starts to question him, his sister comes into town bringing her own baggage as well as reminding him of his own, and he attempts to find ways to “be normal” but just can’t.

The Good:

Michael Fassbender: Between this and A Dangerous Method (oddly enough one of my other favorite films of the year), there’s no doubt that people will start wondering what’s going on with Fassbender that draws him to these sexually diverse parts. My theory is that he likes good roles, but I’m sure others will come up with other more petty reasons. In this film Fassbender is brave, seductive, horrifying and completely vulnerable in this film. It’s like watching the raw soul of a tortured man on screen. You quickly forget any other character’s he’s played and not only is he able to bring the character to life, but he’s able to engage the audience in such a wide variety of emotions, it’s hard to understand how he’s able to bring so much to life.
Carey Mulligan: This is one of those parts that could be easily overdone, pushed, exaggerated and quickly become annoying. Thank god for Mulligan and her potent subtlety. Though I don’t like all the directions the script took this character in, she gave one hell of a performance, whether on screen or over a message machine, she’s captivating and it’s lovely to see her in such a courageous role once again.
Honesty: From the way the film was shot, to the lackadaisical and yet precise approach to nudity, to capturing the emotions that go along with this characters sex acts, to the lighting, to the sets and pissing on camera — everything about this film felt very raw and true to life. The film fully engages you and transports you into the world and psyche of these characters.
Taking a Leap: Though this film is not 100% successful, it was amazing because it’s not like the rest of the herd, it’s attempting to break new ground and in new ways. It’s a leap forward from a number of other films that talk about sex and really sets itself apart in it’s ability to not only show a story but emote on screen and have the audience emoting with it.

The Bad:

The Ending: It felt like they wanted to make the film into a full tragedy, but at the very end slipped into partial tragedy. It feels like there even could have been another ending for festivals that was toned down for its release. Just a guess. Without spoiling anything, the ending did not fully embrace the rest of the film, nor have the depth that we had seen up until then. The entire film, up until a few moments at the end felt very fresh and they they made a few cliche turns with Mulligan’s character and didn’t fully “go there”. Which ties into…
Lack of Depth in the End: The filmmakers were dealing with a relevant topic and shedding light on it in very bold ways, but it felt like they didn’t know fully how to end it with the same power and depth of the rest of the film. Maybe they felt there was already enough darkness in the film as whole that they didn’t need a more disturbing ending, but it would have been nice to end the film in a somewhat more profound way and with something as honest and inventive as the rest of it. (Note: I will see this film a second time just to make sure I agree with this statement. If you disagree I’d love to know your thoughts below.)

Overall:

It’s easy to get bored of watching the same damn films over and over again, but if there’ one thing I can say about Shame it is that it felt like McQueen was really attempting to step into new territory and do so in new ways. The film was beautifully shot, finely acted, is as relevant as it will ever be, takes a lot of risks, and though I have my complaints about it, this is a film that helps move cinema forward and in a time when we’re flooded with new releases, this is one that has the potential to be remembered and used as an example for other filmmakers for some time to come.

For all of those reasons not only do I recommend Shame as a sold pick that will likely get a lot of Oscar buzz, but I am grateful for it both as a film-watcher and a filmmaker — it’s truly inspirational.

Rating: 8.5/10

Shame is in select theaters now and will be hitting more this Friday, December 2nd.

Dangerous Method: Movie Review

The sex lives and interactions of Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) seems a ripe topic for David Cronenberg. It sets expectations that A Dangerous Method cannot meet. His film – adapted from the play by Christopher Hampton – rarely goes for some of the beautiful discomfort that one would expect from the old genre master. Instead you got a modestly engaging piece about how both lives were changed by the work of Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), a patient turned psychologist and not-so-secret lover of Jung.

The Plot:

The young Carl Jung (Fassbender) is given the troubled patient Sabina Spielrein (Knightley), who’s considered so far out there that few have hope she can recover. He works with her using methods practiced by Sigmund Freud (Mortensen), and his use allows the two to begin to communicate. Spielrein is twisted up in emotional and physical knots, but Jung finally gets her to calm down – though much of her problems are tied into her sex drive, which is set off by violence. She is cured, though, and studies psychology with Jung’s encouragement. Freud and Jung have a friendship, but Freud treats Jung as a favorite pupil, and there is tension between the two because they hold different beliefs about religion and the fantastic. Sabina settles into psychology, but there is an attraction between the two and Jung takes her on as a lover, especially after talking with Otto Gross (Cassel) – a psychologist turned patient who feels that he should satisfy any base desire.

The Good

That Cast: Though Knightley’s twisted body behavior in the first act is going to be a dividing line for some (I had no problem with it), you’ve got four of the best actors of their day involved in great discussions that are often fights masqueraded by pleasantries. Every time Mortensen and Fassbender share a frame, there’s an implicit danger to their conversations – both parties don’t want to make the wrong move until the cards eventually collapse, and their egos and beliefs that make every scene between them fascinating. Both know they can decode much of what is parsed. Vincent Cassel also gets to show up for a couple scenes and an embody an Dionysian approach to life.
Cronenberg: He is both the best and worst thing about the film. If one looks at him as the adapter, he makes the play reasonably cinematic, and the performances engrossing and emotionally naked. When things get kinky and weird he shows it with maximum impact in a few frames. He’s great at showing how Knightley’s character reacts to having sex with Jung, and how she is looking at herself in a mirror while it happens, or how a corset reveals part of her in a way that is evident she’s using to control the situation. Though the “filmed play” critique has already been leveled at the movie (it played festivals), that underrates what Cronenberg does.

The Bad:

Cronenberg: But as an Auteur piece, this is one in a run of pictures that seem meant to class the director up. Working with Hampton’s material, you wish Cronenberg would rip it up and rewrite it himself to get at what interests him more. There’s good work here, it’s not a bad movie by any stretch. A Dangerous Method is merely a modest film that has moments but little force. Perhaps sticking too closely to the play or the real events, it becomes a film of moments with a number of great ones. But the whole never congeals into a great work. And what’s frustrating is that you can see how close it is to something great. It feels like it was meant for the art house, for critical respect. Or perhaps that’s the aftertaste of a minor work.

Overall:

David Cronenberg is a truly great director, but this is a minor work that offers many pleasures that come with having such talented people behind and in front of the camera.

Rating: 7/10

Haywire Trailer Will Beat You Silly

The story of Haywire is familiar. Government agent goes on an appointment and ends up betrayed. But the players are exciting. Steven Soderberg reteaming with The Limey screenwriter Lem Dobbs. Newcomer Gina Carano going face to face with Michael Fassbender, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor and Bill Paxton. Though the January release date doesn’t inspire confidence, it’s trying to be 2012′s Taken. And it looks to deliver. Check out the trailer…

The main question mark seems to be Carano, as she was a professional fighter in MMA, but this is the big leagues. But Soderberg is usually smart in his casting, it seems unlikely he didn’t think she could handle it. It’s also nice to see a good looking action movie that doesn’t star Jason Statham or Sylvester Stallone. So much of the summer action can also fall into the sci-fi fantasy genres, which means less actual hand to hand combat and more CGI stunts.

Soderberg’s panel at comic-con went well, so we’re in the build for the film’s release, and the first official trailer does create some excitement about the project. We’re still a ways out and Soderberg’s got Contagion in the can and ready for a September release. As Soderberg said at the con, the rumors of his retirement have been greatly exaggerated.
