Interview: Mia Wasikowska Takes on Jane Eyre

This past weekend in theaters the fresh faced, young woman who took everyone by charm last year with her beautiful performance in The Kids Are Alright and then became an overnight success with one of the top grossing films Alice in Wonderland, hits the big screen again, showing us yet another side of her abilities in her subtle yet extraordinarily powerful role as Jane Eyre in Cary Joji Fukunaga’s (read interview) modern version of Jane Eyre (read review).

Taking on the Classical Figure of Jane Eyre:

So were you a fan of the book in the first place?

Mia Wasikowska: I had just read the book in 2009, and I was half-way through it when I called my agent and said, “This is amazing. Is there a script around or is anyone developing the project?” There wasn’t at the time, but two months later, she emailed me a script, and then I met (director) Cary [Joji Fukunaga]. It was a case of really good timing.

Do you think this is a universal enough story to relate to young audiences now?

MW: Yes. I think it’s a very modern story and also a very universal story. When you take away the costumes and the setting, at the core of it is a story of a young girl who is trying to find love and a family and connection, in a very dislocated world. I feel like that has transcended. It continues to connect with people. It’s a very universal theme and something almost everybody experiences to a different degree in their life.

The entire film was very dark and gray, not only in terms of color but also in tone and feeling. How did that translate to how you create the character?

MW: Yeah, it was very bleak. When you’re in that environment, you really get a sense of the isolation and the distance between one estate and another. Also, as an 18-year-old living in a world where your main source of company is an 8-year-old girl or Mrs. Fairfax, I thought that was really interesting. In our world, we have so many ways we can escape with technology, like TV, Facebook, computers, text messaging and all that. For her, it was reality, every day.

The film has a number of almost horror like scared in it and even though Jane is bold, there’s always a sense of fear lurking over her. How did that external fear balance with her internal fear?

MW: They echo each other. There is a fear of the unknown, unseen and unspoken, and that’s everywhere. The whole dynamic with Rochester (Michael Fassbender) is like, “Does he love me? Doesn’t he love me? Is he joking? Is he not?” It’s not obvious for her, so there is a fear, emotionally and physically. Those castles are so desolate, bare and cold. So, they both play off of each other.

It was nice to see such subtle performances, what are some of the challenges in having to express so much but have the movement be so small?

MW: It’s something that I really noticed about that period was there is such a mask that people put up. There was a public persona and a private persona, and those were the things that really interested me, particularly because there was such a system in which things happened and such a definite way of how you performed. Jane goes with and against those things. She’s a real independent thinker, and has such a strong sense of who she is and what’s right and wrong, despite what society tells her. Then, at the same time, she’s very reserved. The book, start to finish, is her internal monologue. Everything we know is because of what we’re told directly from her. So the challenge, when you adapt that to the screen, is how do you keep all the intensity of thought and feeling, and everything she’s thinking? Then, there is only limited space for dialogue.

This is a very serious movie, what did you do between scenes, during filming, to lighten the mood?

MW: Jamie[Bell and Michael Fassbender are just fantastic. To counter the intensity of the material, we had a lot of fun in between set-ups and scenes, and that was vital. You really have to get your energy from somewhere, so if you’re able to have fun and then use that energy, and channel that into the mood and feel of the film, that’s always really helpful. To have two co-stars like Michael and Jamie was fantastic. There were just a lot of funny things that happened.

There is an odd rumor, about the horse also having a good time while Michael was one set?

MW: It did, yes. Michael had a very huge effect on any horse he got on. On the third day of filming, we were shooting the scene where Jane and Rochester meet, and every time Michael hopped on the horse, it got a huge erection. He’d get off and they’d run the poor thing around the block to get it to go away, and then he’d hop on and it would happen all over again. That was great.

What do you think gave Jane Eyre her courage? Do you think it was something that she had to learn to survive or do you think she was born with it?

MW: I think she has an innate sense of self-respect. It’s not like she’s had a loving family, or a guardian, or someone who has been constantly looking out for her, which is why she’s such an incredible character. Everything that she is, is because of what she’s made herself. What she’s become is because of something inside of her that says, “I’m worthy of a good life, being treated well, and being respected and loved.” She’s not going to compromise herself for anybody. She’s going to make sure she’s a fulfilled individual before she attaches herself to anyone, and she’s rewarded for that, in the end.

Upcoming Projects:

You’ve worked with amazing directors. Is there someone you would like to work with again?

MW: I’ve been really lucky. I’ve had a great experience with pretty much everybody I’ve worked with. I did a Gus Van Sant film last year, and I love his films. When I was younger and watching his films, they gave me a different perspectiveon filmmaking. I think everything he does is brilliant. I’d love to work with him again, and Cary [Joji Fukunaga] and Tim [Burton]. There’s a bunch of directors that I really admire, and Australian ones as well. It would be nice to do a film at home.

What was it like working with Gus Van Sant on Restless and what is your character like in the film?

MW: I’ve been a fan of Gus’ for ages, and to be able to work with him was great. He is the kind of director who is so trusting. I felt so comfortable on his film set. To play a teenager like Anabelle, it’s really rare to get a teenage role that resembles something of what it’s like to be a young person, that isn’t a cliché or a stereotype. I think that’s what Gus does really well. He always presents adolescence in a way that gives us a lot of credit for our emotional complexity and ability to handle complex situations.

Is he as quiet on set as he is in person?

MW: Yes.

You also have a project coming up with Guy Pearce and Gary Oldman. What is that film about and who do you play in it?

MW: It’s called The Wettest County, and John Hillcoat is directing it. It’s about the Prohibition Era in America. It’s about three brothers and I play the girlfriend of Shia LeBeouf’s character. I start that in a few weeks.

Jane Eyre: Movie Review

Director Cary Fukunaga attempts to punch up the romantic, period piece genre with his latest film Jane Eyre. The drama is made with a bit of horror, not something you normally would equate with a Charlotte Brontë 19th century novel, but it definitely makes the film appealing to not only the romantic film-goers but to those looking for something more. Find out what gives Jane Eyre that air of sophistication and youth in our review below…

The Plot:

Jane Eyre is the story about a young, mousy governess who was orphaned and scolded for having a mind of her own. From a young age she had to learn to fight and yet she treats those around her with kindness. Over time she softens the heart of her rather rude and acerbic employer who is hiding a terrible secret.

The Good:

Judi Dench: Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender are both amazing and hold together the story you’re going to the theater for, but it’s Judi Dench that steals just about every scene with her keen and subtle sense of humor. Truly they’re all delightful, but it’s hard to top a Dame.
The Story: Even if you know the story of Jane Eyre you’ll find it difficult not to get caught up in the story and still find it emotionally involved enough to have to know what happens next.
The Cinematography: Absolutely stunning! From the wide shots of the garden to the dimly lit night scenes that invoke the senses of what it’s like living in a dreary old castle with only a candle to guide you. You could almost smell the stone walls and feel the tension while Jane has to find her way through them.

The Unsure:

The Horror Aspect: This isn’t really a horror story and I feel like if they wanted to do the whole “horror- romance” thing they needed to do it even more. Not just moments of it, but have it weave more heavily into the tale. It did help the pace along and add another layer to it, I just wished that it tied in more to the end instead of being explained so easily and then dismissed. Also, it didn’t help that the fear was so closely associated with Jane, who for the most part was fearless — perhaps that’s the point, you’ll have to decide.

The Bad:

Nope, nothing really worth mentioning here.

Overall:

Though I didn’t love the film, it was an extremely interesting watch and definitely worth experiencing. It’s different from many other period pieces in tone and the style of filmmaking. It’s a relevant tale which, though old, promotes positive female images — I know I sound dull but that’s quite rare in modern cinema!

Mia Wasikowska Joins Chan-wook Park’s Stoker

Alice in Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska is in negotiations to appear in a thriller called Stoker according to Deadline. What makes Stoker so special? The film’s screenplay was written by actor Wentworth Miller aka Michael from “Prison Break” aka Chris from Resident Evil: Afterlife.

Aside from Miller’s involvement, Chan-wook Park will direct the film that previously had Carey Mulligan and Jodie Foster set to star. Unfortunately, neither of them are attached at this point. Stoker centers on “an eccentric teen whose enigmatic and estranged uncle returns to the family after the death of the girl’s father. Strange things begin to happen.”

This sounds like another tale about creepy uncles. Why do uncles always get the bad end of the stick? Miller also wrote Uncle Charlie, a prequel that explores another chapter in the history of a family with a knack for burying secrets as well as bodies. Someone’s really into this family!

Stoker will be produced by Tony and Ridley Scott. Wasikowska also stars in the period drama Jane Eyre, which is an adaptation of the popular novel of the same name. That film is due out later this year.

The theatrical trailer for Cary Fukanaga’s highly anticipated drama Jane Eyre has finally been released. Not only is it an adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel of the same name, but it features an amazing cast that brings the story to life. The title character is played by Australian sensation Mia Wasikowska, who’s surrounded by UK vets including Michael Fassbender, Judi Dench, Jamie Bell, and Sally Hawkins. Trailer: Gus Van Sant’s Restless With Mia Wasikowska

The first trailer has been released for Gus Van Sant’s latest film, Restless. The movie is a shared venture between Columbia and Imagine Entertainment and stars Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper. Yes, Hopper as is the son of the late great Dennis, and he looks like a spitting image of his dad. Take a look…

Official Synopsis:

“From Imagine Entertainment comes a powerful and emotional coming of age story, a remarkable film told with honesty and originality that will leave audiences moved. In the film, two outsiders, both shaped by the circumstances that have brought them together, forge a deep and lasting love. Directed by Gus Van Sant, one of the most astute observers of people living life on the edge, comes a take on friendship and young love as engaging and true as it is provocative and stirring.”

It seems like we have another “I’m fascinated with death until it gets too close” story here. Restless has a very Harold and Maude vibe to it but without the old woman, and the massive age difference. A few questions have to be raised about the story such as: why does the boy have an imaginary friend? Who is he and where does he come from? What’s with his obsession with death and funerals? Really, who crashes funerals?

Restless is scheduled to hit theaters on January 28, 2011.

Spider-Man Updates: Dianna Agron, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Venom Returns?

After the release of The Social Network, British actor Andrew Garfield will be free and clear to train and prepare for the role of a lifetime — Spider-Man. Sony has already found their Peter Parker but the search is still on for the villain and love interest who will occupy his life. According to recent reports several names are being splashed around as possible candidates including Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman and “Glee” star Dianna Agron.

Deadline is reporting that some major talent has been going in and out of Sony offices for a part in their superhero reboot. The last time we checked, they were going the unconventional route with the female lead. Instead of casting Mary Jane they’ll tap into the other women featured in the comic. There’s word that Argron tested for a role last night, and Georgina Haig, Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska, Dominique McElligott, and Emma Stone are all being considered.

If they do go the route of putting Stone in this she should definitely play Mary Jane, if only for aesthetic reasons. As for the others, they seem to be better suited for Gwen Stacy or Felicia Hardy. These women join the growing list of potentials, which already includes Lily Collins, Ophelia Lovibond, Imogen Poots, Teresa Palmer, and Emma Roberts.

Next, we have rumors of Hoffman playing the villain. Yes, there’s “early unconfirmed talk” that they’re interested in the actor for a pivotal role. And wait for it….they’re thinking about bringing back Venom! Why?! We’ve had enough of him in live action form to last us a lifetime.

Interview: Mia Wasikowska For Alice in Wonderland

Mia Wasikowska beat out thousands of young actresses to land the title role in Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. The native Australian is a relative new comer to American audiences, which will undoubtedly change after the release of this film. At only 20 years old she’s landed a gig alongside Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter so when we had the opportunity to attend the official press conference for the film we wanted to know what it was that made her THE Alice.

In the film, Alice is no longer the precocious girl we’re using to seeing and hearing about in popular culture. She’s an adult dealing with some serious challenges regarding her future. During this time her family has marriage on the brain and she feels pressured to conform to what they want despite her own reservations. Wasikowska used her own interpretation of that struggle to make her version of the character truly unique.

Alice in Wonderland is based on the Lewis Carroll books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its unofficial sequel Through the Looking Glass. The latter featured a much older Alice who was dealing with the pressure of being a young woman in her old school society. The idea of what she wants to do with her adult life constantly clashes with the plans that her family has for her in the film. Through all the conflict and confusion Wasikowska felt that there was something she could bring to the role because she connected with the character on multiple levels.

I think that Alice, at this time in the story, I think that she’s at this time in her life that a lot of people sort of experience something that she’s going through. It’s this kind of uncomfortable or this discomfort in your skin and with who you are. She just has this awkwardness about her that I think a lot of people really go through in their life. That was something that I kind of understood and ultimately her story is kind of her coming back to who she is as a young girl, which is really assertive, and very sure of what she believes is right and wrong. And so, the story is just kind of her reconnecting with herself.

Wasikowska had to do her homework and re-familiarize herself with the character before shooting the film. She discussed her first experience reading the books as a child and the differences she noticed in the stories as an adult.

I read the books when I was about 8 or 9 and then I read them again before we started filming and saw that as an older person I saw this whole other side to them that I didn’t really catch as a kid. I think it’s amazing ’cause it kind of constantly reveals itself to you in different ways and the humor becomes evident. And I’m sure as a kid I saw something else that I didn’t get as an adult and there were parts that I would have loved as a kid that I probably, you know, missed as an older person.

Tim Burton is a director known for his unique visual style and has had an extremely successful career over the past 20 years. To be cast as the leading lady in one of his productions is an amazing feat for any actress, especially one so young. Wasikowska’s relationship with the director on set was based on trust. She felt comfortable in his creative hands and knew that his vision of Alice would be like nothing we’ve ever seen before.

I’ve loved his films for such a long time so the coolest part was actually seeing [them] from the beginning because you know, I always just see the end, like the final product. So just to see the whole process was really amazing and also Tim’s really trusting as a director so from the minute that you know you’re cast, you just feel a lot of trust and freedom and collaboration as well, which is sort of all you can ask for.

Alice in Wonderland: Movie Review

Down the rabbit hole you go to visit Disney’s latest adaptation of the classic tale, Alice in Wonderland. The film is drenched with 3D visuals and the signature Gothic style of master filmmaker Tim Burton. The basic premise along with the talented cast led by newcomer Mia Wasikowska sounds like a recipe for cinematic gold, but overall it comes across as a bit uneven.

The Plot:

The film is based on a combination of Lewis Caroll’s books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and the unofficial sequel, Through the Looking Glass. The story centers on a 19-year-old Alice, who makes a dramatic return to the fantasy land she visited as a child. She’s the only hope the inhabitants have against the rising threat of the evil Red Queen (Carter). She must fulfill a prophecy that names her as the savior of the suppressed kingdom, while trying to find her way back home to her would-be fiance.

The Good:

Helena Bonham Carter: The Red Queen was the most interesting character to watch in this film, and it wasn’t just because she’s the villain. Carter manages to show a lot vulnerability regardless of her tough exterior that makes the audience relate to her. Even though she does heinous things, you feel compassion because you know deep down she’s acting out of the hurt and rejection she’s felt most of her life.
Use of 3D: Unlike most films that come out these days, the 3D element wasn’t the biggest selling point for Alice. It’s there, it’s present, but it’s not overwhelming. It serves a purpose and gives you that depth of field without being over the top. It’s no Avatar.
Music: The score is one of the most important parts of this film because it keeps you interested with the story when the narration starts to drag. It takes your mind into this mystical world and you feel like a kid again. Similar to Beetlejuice or even Edward Scissorhands, it transports you to that special place.
Humor: Like most Burton films there were a lot of humorous moments mixed in with the darker portions of the story. The Red and White Queen both have their time to shine, and there’s an interesting use of dance that Alice and the Mad Hatter exhibit at key moments in the film that was hilarious. There’s only one word that can be used to describe it, “Futter-wacking.” Believe me, when you watch the movie you’ll get what it means.

The Bad:

The Mad Hatter: Johnny Depp did a great job in this film, but the character of the Mad Hatter was the uneven element I referred to earlier. He was a bipolar British man who turned Scottish when he got upset. The Mad Hatter is essentially crazy, but in an attempt to alter him for a new generation they risk confusing the hell out of fans of the original.

Overall:

Alice in Wonderland is a fun ride that you wouldn’t mind getting on once, but you’d hold off until the DVD to get on again. The performances are great, the music is fantastic, the visuals are polished, but the story is essentially the same. It’s the same Alice she’s just in a new outfit. But even though it’s not the greatest movie it’s still worth a viewing and the youngsters will definitely enjoy it.

Stewart, Mulligan, Cover Vanity Fair’s Hollywood Issue

Vanity Fair has released the cover of their annual Hollywood issue and it features several actresses who are described as the “fresh faces” of the new decade. Too bad the majority of them have been around for years, but main stream media is just now catching on to them. Kristen Stewart and Evan Rachel Wood lead the pack of nine that headline the issue. There are several problems with the cover choices for this issue with the first one being the tagline. It states that these are the new faces of the decade, but will all of these ladies be around ten years from now with thriving careers? I remember a few years back when Lindsay Lohan was on the cover of the Young Hollywood issue and we all see how she turned out. Also, where are the actresses of color? Not just African American, but Latino, Asian, give me Native American or something. They usually stick someone in there to make a difference, but this time they didn’t even try.

And last but not least, how fresh faced are Evan Rachel Wood and Kristen Stewart supposed to be? Granted they’re young, but those girls have been around for a while, and the same could be said for Abbie Cornish and Rebecca Hall. They haven’t been front and center of any blockbusters but they’re not new to the game. I could have sworn that Amanda Seyfried and Stewart were already featured on one of these “special Hollywood issues” last year, yet they’re coming back for more?

Focus Features Buys The Kids Are All Right

Another huge purchase has been made at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and it’s for Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids Are All Right. The film puts a new twist on the concept of family reunions with the help of an amazing cast including Academy Award nominees Annette Benning and Julianne Moore.

In the movie, two teenage children conceived through artificial insemination get the urge to seek out their birth father and introduce him to the family life that their two mothers have built for them. Once the donor is found, the household will never be the same, as family ties are defined, re-defined, and then re-re-defined. Mark Ruffalo stars as the unsuspecting father, and Alice in Wonderland actress Mia Wasikowska and Journey to the Center of the Earth‘s Josh Hutcherson are featured as the inquisitive teens.

Following its acclaimed world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, Focus Features has acquired domestic and select international rights (the U.K., Germany, and South Africa) to the film. The announcement was just made yesterday by Focus Features CEO James Schamus. The movie was produced by Gilbert Films’ Gary Gilbert and Jordan Horowitz, Antidote Films’ Jeffrey Levy-Hinte, Mandalay Vision’s Celine Rattray, Daniela Taplin Lundberg, and UGC PH’s Philippe Hellmann.

Another diamond in the rough has been picked up for general distribution, who knows what other Sundance entry will find its way into the hands of a major studio.

New Alice In Wonderland Mad Hatter Clip and Stills

The generous people over at Disney have released some concept art designs and a short Mad Hatter clip from the Tim Burton adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland. The film stars frequent collaborators Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter as The Mad Hatter and The Red Queen, and newcomer Mia Wasikowska as Alice. We’ve got a video of Depp talking about his role in the film and how it felt to go from his usual laid back self to being mad as a hatter…

The film centers on a 19-year-old Alice, who makes a dramatic return to the fantasy land she visited as a child. She’s Wonderland’s only hope against the evil Red Queen and her group of followers. Will Alice be able to end her reign of terror? Below is some very interesting concept art highlighting the March Hare, Cheshire Cat and the mystical Underland. On top of that, we have a special Mad Hatter video which features Johnny Depp explaining the origins of the character and his portrayal.

This is one of those matches that where made in cinematic heaven, Tim Burton + Johnny Depp + Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland” = (hopefully) a very good movie. Now that the new year is finally here, we don’t have to wait much longer to tumble down the rabbit hole. Alice in Wonderland hits theaters on March 5, 2010.

Former child actor Aaron Johnson is already a familiar face in his native UK, but he’ll be making his leading man debut stateside as the title character in Matthew Vaughn‘s Kick-Ass. Johnson stars as Dave Lizewski, an awkward teenager who’s brutally attacked and decides to take justice into his own hands. The role is a drastic shift from his performance as legendary Beatle John Lennon in the loose biopic Nowhere Boy, which chronicles the tumultuous childhood of the future rock star. Both films are slated for 2010 releases, but Nowhere Boy will makes its theatrical debut in the U.K.
