Amber Heard Joins ‘Machete Kills’

After news broke that Robert Rodriguez was inexplicably filming Machete Kills, a sequel to 2010’s Machete (itself a spin-off from a Grindhouse pseudo-trailer), the question became: who will show up to star in this thing? A random cavalcade of stars showed up for the last one (Robert De Niro, Don Johnson, Lindsay Lohan); so far, Machete Kills has nabbed returning stars Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Alba, as well as good decision maker Mel Gibson. And now, the latest name added to the roster is Amber Heard.

Heard will reportedly portray an assassin whose code name is Miss San Antonio, who will be weaving her way throughout a plot in which Machete must take out a terrorist named Mendez the Madman, as well as Mel Gibson’s Luther Voz, an evil billionaire and arms dealer who plans on launching a destructive missile at Earth via outer space.

Heard had previously been rumored to star in the Robert Rodriguez-directed remake of Red Sonja (perhaps the worst idea for a reboot ever) before Rodriguez bailed on the project.

So, to recap: a Grindhouse-y sequel about a badass Federale/day laborer who battles Mel Gibson over space weaponry while surrounded by beautiful women, as directed by Robert Rodriguez. Well, it can’t be any worse than the first one, right?

Robert Rodriguez Officially Starting Production On ‘Sin City 2,’ Wants Mel Gibson For ‘Machete Kills’

A sequel to 2005’s Sin City has been rumored and in discussion for so long it’s become a kind of urban legend—the kind of thing that people always talk about (especially director Robert Rodriquez and Sin City creator Frank Miller), but everyone knows would never really happen. Well, that appears to no longer be the case, as Dimension Films has sent out an official press release declaring that Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For is officially in pre-production.

It’s something of a surprise that Rodriguez is actually committing to the sequel, as he seems to always have 3-4 fantasy projects that never come to fruition going at once, with Sin City 2 always being the crown jewel in that roster. But hey—if this keeps Rodriguez from making another Spy Kids film, I’m game. Check out the press release below:

ROBERT RODRIGUEZ AND FRANK MILLER TO BEGIN PRODUCTION ON THEIR MUCH ANTICIPATED SEQUEL TO 2005‘S SIN CITY ENTITLED “FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR”

Robert Rodriguez’s Quick Draw Productions and Alexander Rodnyansky’s AR Films partner with Dimension Films on historic sequel

AUSTIN, TX (12 April 2012) — Filmmakers Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, along with producer Alexander Rodnyansky, have announced that production will commence on the highly anticipated sequel to 2005’s Sin City, entitled Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. The film will be produced by AR Films and Quick Draw Productions, financed through AR Films U.S and released domestically by Dimension Films.

“The first question I am always asked is “When will you make another Sin City? ,” said Rodriquez. “I have wanted to re-team with Frank Miller and return to the world he created since the day we wrapped the original, but have felt a duty to the fans to wait until we had something truly exceptional that would meet and exceed what have become epic expectations. A Dame To Kill For will certainly be worth the wait.”

Sin City creator, screenwriter and co-director Frank Miller said, “The first Sin City knocked out audiences who had never seen anything like it before. Robert Rodriguez and I are going to shake things up and deliver a ferocious film experience that is going to go even further than the first.“

The script and details of the film’s story have been kept tightly under wraps. Casting will begin next week, with many of the original cast expected to return. The film, a Quick Draw Production, will be produced by Rodriguez and producing partners Aaron Kaufman and Iliana Nikolic; and by Alexander Rodnyansky and Sergei Bespalov and Stephen L’Hereux. Miller, The Weinstein Company’s Harvey and Bob Weinstein and Miramax’s Adam Fields will act as executive producers. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For was developed by Frank Miller based upon his graphic novel, with a screenplay by Frank Miller and Academy Award winner William Monahan (The Departed). The film is expected to begin production this summer at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

In other Rodriguez news, the multi-tasking filmmaker is also set to film Machete Kills, the sequel to the 2010 film (and Grindhouse spin-off) Machete. While the original film featured such stunt casting as Robert De Niro and Lindsay Lohan, it looks like Rodriquez is now gunning for Mel Gibson and Michelle Williams for the sequel.

Gibson’s career is in desperate need of some kind of public approval/acceptance, especially after starring in such underperformers as Edge of Darkness and The Beaver, and following the actor being publicly drummed out of a cameo in The Hangover II. Williams is in no need of such a boost—honestly, it would be a bigger shock to see her in Machete Kills rather than Gibson.

‘Braveheart’ Hero William Wallace Is Getting A TV Show

Thanks in part to the success of such shows as HBO’s Game of Thrones and Starz’s Spartacus, it looks like we’ve got another Swords And Sandals television show coming our way—the story of William Wallace. That’s right, the 13^th century Scottish warrior who fought in the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward I of England. Or, as you may know him, the guy Mel Gibson played in Braveheart back when Mel Gibson wasn’t offending every subset of people in the free world.

Yes, essentially, it’s Braveheart The TV Show, as a collective of American and Scottish producers are set to launch the TV drama Wallace, a televised version of William Wallace’s life, battles and exploits. Wallace will be written and produced by The Eleventh Hour’s Mick Davis, and will focus on William Wallace’s “back story, his years spent attempting to unify Scotland, his loves and losses, as well as his legendary battles with King Edward the Longshank and rival Robert the Bruce.”

No word yet as to whether or not each episode will climax with Wallace screaming “FREEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOM” to a rousing James Horner score, or if Wallace will be played with someone who can maintain Gibson’s shi**house crazy intensity. We can only hope.

Jamie Foxx, Mel Gibson and Garry Shandling Mock Robert Downey Jr.

The American Cinematheque recently honored Robert Downey Jr. for his contributions to cinema, and got his friends Jamie Foxx, Mel Gibson and Garry Shandling to roast him in a video before the presentation. Starting with Foxx complaining about Downey going for black roles after Tropic Thunder, the piece goes into his drug use and prison stint, and covers the most famous troubled incidents the actor has had. It’s also pretty funny. Check it out.

One of the great things about videos like this are that they relieve the tension. Downey gets to be made fun of by his friends, and they cover all the bad stuff so it’s brought up and put out of the way. The elephant in the room is addressed and is now able to walk out slowly.

But what it also brings up is that Robert Downey Jr. has had a varied career and interesting life, the sort that doesn’t always lead to being on the most famous and successful stars in Hollywood. Perhaps part of his appeal is connected to that checkered past, and audiences like that he’s someone who’s gone through the ringer and come out on the other side. Or perhaps being exceptionally talented – as it often does – washes away sins.

Mel Gibson and Joe Eszterhas to Make Film about Jewish warrior

Mel Gibson and Joe Eszterhas are both officially “bad boys” for the public lives and the trouble they’ve gotten into on and off screen. Perhaps Gibson is the Chocolate to Eszterhas’s peanut butter as the two are teaming together to tell the story of Judah Maccabee, a Jewish warrior famed in the second century B. C. according to Deadline Hollywood.

Mel Gibson and Joe Eszterhas both had their time at the top of the industry. Gibson has had the Mad Max and the Lethal Weapon franchises, while Eszterhas was one of the hottest writers – having penned Flashdance and The Jagged Edge, and came under public scrutiny for making so much money on scripts like Basic Instinct. The industry turned on Eszterhas first as he penned a number of erotic thrillers like Jade and Showgirls that went bust. And while Gibson was respected up until 2004′s The Passion of the Christ, his public actions made him more famous for his sexism, anti-semetism, and wife-beating than – say – his work in Edge of Darkness.

Eszterhas basically left the industry after a bad run – which is what happens to hot writers turned cold – so his return is somewhat welcome, even if no one’s ever loved one of his scripts. For Gibson, perhaps making a film about a Jewish hero is the best way to counter some of his drunken antics. And the public often has a short term memory for a lot of this stuff. But Gibson still seems toxic if the numbers on The Beaver are any representation of audience’s interest in his return.

Mel Gibson Joins With Estranged Wife For Charity Event

When he’s not busy desperately convincing us all that he’s kind of, well, sort of monstrous, Mel Gibson actually appears to be a fairly nice guy. No—seriously!

According to Third Age, “Mel Gibson reunited with his estranged wife on Saturday for a rare public appearance with three of their seven children and three of their grandkids” for a charity event for small children. Even I can’t think of a snarky comment to make about that.

The special occasion was the 10th birthday of Maria de Jesus and Maria Teresa Quiej-Alvaraez, two Guatemalan girls borns as conjoined twins connected at the skulls. The pair garnered international attention when surgeons at Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA Medical Center separated them in August of 2002.

Gibson’s estranged wife Robyn was formerly the president of the board of directors of nonprofit group Mending Kids, a group that provides life-altering surgical care for children worldwide: the Gibsons were honored for their contributions to the organization.

“We’re all involved in Josie and Teresa’s lives,” People Magazine reported Gibson as saying (the actor was using the girls’ nicknames). “It’s incredible seeing Josie and Teresa do so well. Listening to Josie speak, you think, ‘Man, this is the happiest kid I’ve ever seen.”

Gibson is actually very well known for making discreet donations to various charities throughout the world.

The Beaver: Movie Review

Jodie Foster steps in front and behind the camera to tackle the controversial subject of mental health in an extremely honest, yet somehow ridiculously humorous story about a man who is unable to cope with life and so he puts up a front, an Australian Beaver front in The Beaver. The concept is odd and the film doesn’t get much more normal, but it’s refreshing to see someone take such a big risk on a topic that is both important and relevant…

The Plot:

A man suffers from severe depression and ends up losing nearly everything because he can’t seem to find a way to deal with life. Just when things are at their worst and there’s no where left to go, a side of him comes out that helps him overcome his fears — that is as long as he doesn’t speak but allows his Aussie beaver hand-puppet to communicate for him.

The Good:

Dealing With Mental Health: The film raises some important issues about mental health in an extremely interesting and innovative way. Many people suffer from mental illness and recent socio-economical circumstances have made life very hard for many — there’s no doubt that there are numerous people dealing with issues of depression and other forms of mental illness right now and those people are seeking ways of getting their lives back. Though tying a puppet to ones arm isn’t necessarily the answer and might seem a bit far-fetched, people need to find a way to fight back. So even though the premise for this film is a bit crazy, it makes some rather relevant points and raises some questions worth talking about.
Mel Gibson: Who knows where he’s pulling this character from, yes one could tie it into recent gossip, but whether it be life or character acting, I’m not here to judge, I’m here to say it worked extremely well for this film. Gibson has an innate charisma that he’s able to stifle in his own body and yet still show on screen through a stuffed beaver. His character is layered, flawed, pathetically sweet and fascinating to watch.
The Side Story: The most interesting part of this film was the young, troubled teenagers played by the equally talented duo Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence. Their characters were flawed and twisted, but honest and interesting. Their relationship was one worth its own film entirely — I kept finding myself wanting them to turn the camera around and show the other side of the story.
Fearless: This is a film that walks all the lines, takes a number of big risks, and isn’t afraid to make you feel uncomfortable — I won’t say that it works 100% of the time, but I respect Foster’s willingness to really “go there” and not just make a cliched drama but take those risks and make a film that is more than just entertainment, is something potentially important.

The Bad:

Shift: The film is a bit segmented, it kind of starts are one film then completely shifts to another. Though the character quite obviously has a big changes in his life, the film still needs to all tie together.
The Audience: The audience that I watched the film with was cold as ice. It’s important that one knows that it’s okay to laugh at the hard times in life but sometimes it’s necessary. This film capitalizes on that, and I don’t know if it was the films fault or just the lack of understanding from those around me but something made the screening of this film cold and it’s one that when given the time I’ll definitely check out again.

Overall:

As I said, my viewing of this film was not great and I don’t know if that’s due to problems with the film or just a horrible audience (trust me, it’s happened more than once before). The film is not perfect, but it’s got some interesting points, takes a number of big risks, has some absolutely fantastic performances and if you’re looking for something outside of the box it’s definitely worth your time.

Rating: 6.5/10

The Beaver is in theaters starting May 6th!

Mel Gibson Turns Himself In, Makes Us All Long For Charlie Sheen News

Today in “Jesus, what happened to Martin Riggs, man?” news (to paraphrase Kevin Smith), Mel Gibson turned himself in to police—while his new film, The Beaver, was premiering at SXSW—at the at El Segundo Police Department “as part of his sentence for the misdemeanor battery case resulting from an alleged January 2010 incident with his then-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva,” according to Access Hollywood.

Gibson was quickly booked and then released after having previously pleading no contest to a ‘misdemeanor battery on a spouse or cohabitant.’ Because of this, the actor turned director has been sentenced to a year-long domestic violence program, and has, essentially eroded away any of the last bits of public goodwill for him that hadn’t been totally erased by the whole, you know, Sugartits-Gate (I would like to thank him, however, for providing me with the opportunity to write the words Sugartits-Gate—what can I say, it’s been a lifelong dream, now fulfilled).

Sadly, it’s enough to make you long for some Charlie Sheen news—at least when Chuck flames out, it’s almost humorous in a “holy hell, did he just say ‘tiger blood?’ He did, didn’t he?” kind of way. And that’s what is truly unforgivable—having to long for Charlie Sheen news is price that no society, even at its most vulgar and base, should ever be forced to pay.

Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster’s The Beaver Gets Pushed to May

Mel Gibson and his beaver continue to have problems. By beaver we’re referring to his dark comedy that co-stars and is directed by Jodie Foster. The Summit Entertainment production took forever to get an official release date, and now it’s being pushed back. The film was originally scheduled to hit theaters on March 23, but now it’s been delayed until May where it will duke it out with the summer blockbusters!

Summit has announced that The Beaver will officially hit theaters on May 6 in limited release and will expand into wide on May 20. In other words, it’s going head to head with Marvel’s Thor. Good luck with that one. This film will have a hard enough time finding audiences but amongst the summer’s superhero influx, it might never be found.

The Beaver is an emotional story about a man on a journey to re-discover his family and re-start his life. Plagued by his own demons, Walter Black (Gibson) was once a successful toy executive and family man who now suffers from depression. No matter what he tries, Walter can’t seem to get himself back on track… until a beaver hand puppet enters his life.

The Beaver Finally Gets A Release Date

Jodie Foster’s latest directorial project The Beaver has been hanging in limbo over the past year due to the personal scandal that’s surrounded its star Mel Gibson. Even though Summit Entertainment released the first trailer a week ago, a theatrical release was still unconfirmed but today we’ve learned that they’ve finally nailed down a date.

The Beaver will open in limited released on March 23, 2011 and wide on April 8, 2011. This is definitely a risky bet for Summit because they could have just left this film on the shelf to rot. They’re actually giving the people an opportunity to see if they like it. If it does well that first week, they’ll expand, if not they’ll probably act like it never happened.

Over the weekend Summit Entertainment finally released the first trailer for Mel Gibson’s latest film, The Beaver. The movie has been held hostage in limbo for ages thanks to the unfortunate public scandals surrounding its star. Now that the trailer is available online we can decide for ourselves whether or not the film (or Gibson) is worth our time and money. Check it out…

Official Synopsis:

Walter Black (Mel Gibson) is suffering from extreme depression. As he spends most of his days sleeping or trying different methods of self therapy, his wife Meredith (Jodie Foster) hides behind work and helplessly watches him fall apart; his youngest son Henry (Riley Thomas Stewart) becomes a hermit; his oldest son Porter (Anton Yelchin) writes his classmate’s essays for cash and secretly keeps a list of similarities between him and his father to avoid a similar future; and Walter’s toy company heads toward bankruptcy.

Walter soon hits bottom when Meredith kicks him out of the house, and he decides to get drunk and kill himself. The suicide attempt goes awry, and upon waking up, Walter is introduced to “the Beaver” – a beaver puppet he had found in the trash and put on his hand during his drinking binge – who suddenly speaks to him, in a British accent. With the help of the Beaver (a facet of Walter’s personality), Walter gets a new lease on life and returns home.

Doesn’t it seem like they just showed us the entire movie from start to finish in two and a half minutes? We’re not fans of revealing too much in trailers and it looks like they went all out here. Also, is there a reason why Gibson’s Beaver voice sounds like Ray Winstone? It would have been kind of cool if Gibson picked up some tips from a ventriloquist so he could talk without moving his lips. Other than that the movie looks OK, but we’re not sure how successful it will be when it’s FINALLY released in theaters.

Oh Mel Gibson, what are we going to do with you? The future of his latest film The Beaver has been floating in limbo due to his recent pr troubles. It’s kind of hard to sell Gibson as a headlining star these days but according to Deadline Summit plans on releasing the film in spring 2011. To kick start the marketing, they’ve released the first official photo of him and director/co-star Jodie Foster and they’ve announced the trailer premiere.

Official Synopsis:
