Matthew McConaughey plays the title character and he’s surrounded by a cast that includes Ryan Phillippe, Marisa Tomei, and William H. Macy. Prior to the release of these, we had no idea that Macy was even in this movie but we’re glad he is. There seems to be a dark and seedy underground vibe pulsating throughout this film. Phillippe’s character is obviously up to something, and the relationship between Tomei and McConaughey is more than a little complicated.

The Lincoln Lawyer – New Trailer, More Action

The Lincoln Lawyer just got a little more exciting with its new high-action trailer. It has more twists, more action, more subplots, lots of good actors — looks like it’s time for another good crime-drama-thriller (it’s a new name for an old category). Though these types of films have been done to death, there’s nothing like a good thriller to revitalize the genre and keep you on the edge of your seat. The first trailer featured a serious McConaughey which seriously worried me, but this trailer boosts an impressive supporting cast with what looks like some heavy drama and high tension. Let’s do this!

I almost always like the first trailer or teaser trailers beat, but in this case, a little more info and a little more background on everyone else in the film with my favorites Marisa Tomei and Bryan Cranston thrown into the mix and now they’ve got me hooked!

Synopsis:

In the gripping thriller “The Lincoln Lawyer,” Matthew McConaughey stars as Michael “Mick” Haller, a slick, charismatic Los Angeles criminal defense attorney who operates out of the back of his Lincoln Continental sedan. Having spent most of his career defending petty, gutter-variety criminals, Mick unexpectedly lands the case of a lifetime: defending a rich Beverly Hills playboy (Ryan Phillippe) who is accused of attempted murder. However, what initially appears to be a straightforward case with a big money pay-off swiftly develops into a deadly match between two masters of manipulation and a crisis of conscience for Haller.

Directed by Brad Furman from a screenplay by John Romano, based on the novel by Michael Connelly, the cast also includes Marisa Tomei, Josh Lucas, John Leguizamo, Frances Fisher, Bob Gunton, Laurence Mason, with Bryan Cranston and William H. Macy. Lionsgate and Lakeshore Entertainment present a Lakeshore Entertainment Lionsgate production in association with Sidney Kimmel Entertainment Stone Village Pictures.

Matthew McConaughey is back to wearing clothes again for his upcoming movie The Lincoln Lawyer. Back in November the first trailer for the film debuted and it showed McConaughey as an unconventional counselor who doesn’t have a problem with getting his hands dirty for his clients. The first teaser poster for the movie shows the actor and his Lincoln, against the setting of a questionable neighborhood. Take a look…

Are we the only ones who notice the terrible airbrushing in this poster? It reminds us of the work they did on the one sheet for the 2006 film Harsh Times. It’s supposed to be gritty and dangerous but it comes across as very cheap looking.

Matthew McConaughey is ready to step away from the beach and into the courtroom for his latest film, The Lincoln Lawyer. Unlike in his previous legal feature A Time to Kill, this character is a bit unconventional. He’s more of a hustler than an attorney, and even though his methods aren’t totally ethical he gets the job done. Check out the trailer…

So many questions arise after watching this trailer. Let’s go through our concerns shall we? Why is the music so loud? More importantly, why is it used in this trailer at all? It doesn’t seem to fit with the film. They’re trying to make it appear more action oriented than it probably is.

Next, why is Michael Pena in everything? That guy has got to have the hardest working agent in Hollywood next to Liam Neeson’s. And last but not least, how are we supposed to watch a movie with both Josh Lucas and Matthew McConaughey without getting them confused? Don’t they look just alike? If they don’t play brothers in this film we’re going to be highly upset.

The Lincoln Lawyer hits theaters on March 18, 2011.

Rip Torn and Matthew McConaughey Join Bernie

Rip Torn is returning to the big screen in the Jack Black led comedy, Bernie. According to THR, he’ll be joined by Matthew McConaughey and Oscar winner Shirley MacLaine in the Richard Linklater directed film. This will be a reunion of sorts for McConaughey, who appeared in Linklater’s classic Dazed and Confused.

The plot for Bernie sounds like a present day remake of Weekend at Bernie’s, which might explain it’s coincidental name. It centers on “a Renaissance man-community leader-mortician Bernie (Black) who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a wealthy but very particular widow. When he kills her, he goes to great lengths to maintain the illusion that she is still alive.”

In the film, Torn will play Bernie’s defense lawyer and McConaughey will star as the town’s district attorney, who’s angling for re-election and suspicious about the widow’s death. We wonder if he’ll have flashbacks of his stint from A Time to Kill? Remember when he used to do really good drama?

On a side note, Bernie is based on a true story. A mortician really did get convicted of killing an elderly woman back in 1996 and pretending she was still alive months after. Creepy.

The Invention of Lying: Movie Review

Are you interested in some dry British humor, with a side of moral ambiguity? The Invention of Lying is the latest film from the creator of the hit TV series The Office and Extras, Ricky Gervais. The movie takes place in a world where deception doesn’t exist and honesty isn’t the best policy, it’s the only policy. The Invention of Lying centers on the one person in the universe who’s developed the understanding and the ability to tell a lie.

The Players:

Cast: Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Louis C.K., Tina Fey, Jeffrey Tambor, and Jonah Hill

The Plot:

The Invention of Lying takes place in an alternate universe where the concept of falsehood doesn’t exist. No one is capable of telling a lie, and everyone speaks their minds no matter how harsh the truth is. Mark Bellison (Gervais) is a down on his luck screenwriter who after getting fired from his job, and evicted from his apartment comes up with the first lie. He uses his new found ability to manipulate the general public, become filthy rich, and win the affections of the lovely Anna McDoogles (Garner). The only problem is even with the gift of gab he can’t lie his way into Anna’s heart, or gain the genuine respect of his colleagues because his success is based on a sham.

The Good:

Ricky Gervais: The one thing that stood out about Gervais’ performance was his dramatic scenes. There were certain points in the film where the tone took a very dark turn and his character was forced to get serious and emotional. It was a totally different side of him that was exposed to the audience and he pulled it off beautifully.
The Setting: The film was set in an alternate reality, so everything from the city billboards, to the offices had to be bland and straight forward. The set design was very one dimensional, but it worked for the purpose of the story.
The Cameos: The best part of the film had to come from the many cameo appearances made by several talented actors. Edward Norton, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jason Bateman, and The Office and Extras co-star Stephen Merchant each popped in for various scenes.

The Bad:

Tina Fey: Tina Fey’s role could have been given to any no name actress in Hollywood without a shadow of a doubt. She starred as Mark’s snarky secretary Shelley, and pretty much played a watered down version of Liz Lemon mixed with her news anchor personality from Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update.
Religious Undertone: The film is marketed as a comedy, but has some serious religious themes that play alongside the story. There’s an entire bit dedicated to the origin of heaven and hell, what’s considered good or bad, and the daily responsibilities of “the man in the sky.” No matter what your spiritual position is, the subtext comes off like bad propaganda.

The Overall:

The Invention of Lying isn’t a terrible film, but it’s not a typical comedy. There are a lot of self-reflective moments that occur during the movie, so if you do plan on seeing it, prepare for your laugh to be followed by a hefty cry.

Rating: 6.5/10

New DVD Releases: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Observe and Report, 30 Rock

DVD Releases are very comedy heavy this week as Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Observe and Report bring the late-spring funny to DVD store shelves.

Also, as TV Season gets underway, it’s one of the last chances to catch up with last season as several shows release last year’s seasons on DVD including huge hits “30 Rock” and “The Mentalist.” And, as always, the three worst DVDs of the week.

FEATURE FILMS

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

Starring: Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner

No, this movie has not hit DVD yet. Sure, it may seem like it. Why? Because movies like Fools Gold, Failure to Launch, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days already exist in silver-disc form. So what makes this one different? Well, not much really. There is some sort of Christmas Carol hijinks going on but it’s more stooge than Scrooge as McConaughey traipses around as a bit of a Lothario who must relive his old relationships and see how lonely he’ll end up.

The moral – being a slacker hippie burnout who does nothing but take his shirt off and jump from girl-to-girl is a very bad thing. Yet we keep seeing McConaughey in the same role while living a similar life offscreen. Shouldn’t he be taking his own advice at this point so we can actually watch him act again?

Of course, the promise of another shirtless McConaughey may be enough to lure some people to add this DVD to their Collection and that’s really probably a bad thing.

Observe and Report

Starring: Seth Rogen and Anna Faris

It’s strange how the world of copycat Hollywood works. It’s strange because, although this film was very different from Paul Blart, it actually suffered from comparisons to that other Mall Cop film.

With Observe, director Jody Hill provided a pitch-black comedy that was much closer to Taxi Driver than it was to Kevin James. The director and star repeatedly stated this in interviews and critics quickly confirmed it in reviews.

But it didn’t matter. The film couldn’t escape the sizable shadow of Blart with chimes of “What is Seth Rogen doing?” and “Please, another Mall Cop Film!” echoing with disgust in response to this movie.

Well, Rogen was actually making a pretty twisted comedy. Check out the DVD for proof.

The Case to Vote for It: As is often the case in this section, there’s the title to consider, and this one is an absolute doozy of a bad title. They’re grown Albinos? How is that an economical farming idea? Also, there’s the plot which supposedly unveils the “legend” of this so-called farm.

In what twisted universe is the existence of an Albino Farm a legend?

Anna Nicole Smith Story

The Case to Vote for It: Not only did someone see fit to actually make a fiction movie detailing the life of one Anna Nicole Smith, they also decided to cast Willa Ford, a singer and Dancing with the Stars competitor as the titular icon.

There’s just no way in the world this can be anything other than terrible, is there?

Lymelife

The Case to Vote for It: As always, when a movie is loaded with stars (this has Alec Baldwin, Cynthia Nixon, Emma Roberts, Timothy Hutton and two Culkins) and you’ve never even come close to having heard of it, you know it’s awful.

Matthew McConaughey to Star in Southbound

Matthew McConaughey and Eva Mendes are in negotiations to star in the upcoming indie drama, Southbound. According to Variety the two actors are circling the project that will be directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz. Overnight Production’s Rick Schwartz and Aaron Kaufman are co-producing the film that will take place between the Mexican and U.S. border.

In Southbound McConaughey will star as a police officer who patrols the Mexican-U.S. border. He accepts a bribe from a Mexican woman (Mendes), and it causes a domino effect that places his immediate family in danger. The officer finds himself involved with a war between the U.S. Immigration police, and a Mexican crime family. Filming on Southbound is set to begin this fall in September.

McConaughey last starred in the romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,which quickly came and went. I miss his work circa 1996 a la A Time to Kill. Wasn’t that the one film where everyone thought “hey, this guy can act!” Too bad ever since then it’s been rom-com city. I wouldn’t mind seeing McConaughey star in a small indie flick. Perhaps this is the change he needs to escape the pressure of always having his shirt off?

Matthew Mcconaughey is back on the big screen looking tanner and more buff than ever, to play a man who is haunted by his girlfriends past. He’s Scrooge, but instead of needing to learn the Christmas spirit he has to learn how to love women instead of just using them.
