New DVD Releases: Nine, Leap Year, Tooth Fairy

A pretty solid week on DVD as nearly half-a-dozen honest-to-goodness features are immortalized in shiny-disced brilliance including, by my math, the first 2010 wide releases to appear on DVD! Congratulations, Leap Year and Tooth Fairy, the dubious honor is yours!

The rest of the releases are led by Nine, that movie that you heard a lot about last year until it actually came out and then seemed non-existent as well as Tetro, Francis Ford Coppola’s new film that you meant to see.

Nine

“The musical is back!”

Remember when Hugh Jackman wasted 9 minutes of the Oscars in 2009 with a flat musical number that proclaimed exactly that? Kind of remains to be seen, no?

Nine is another one of those “Garbage Can Films” – where a massive Oscar Campaign is at the ready, yet it all gets tossed once the movie fails with both critics and audiences alike.

But this one had more riding on it than one Oscar campaign. Nine was the torchbearer for the entire musical genre – a film that was set to reignite the fire that’d been smoldering since Mamma Mia! swept up audiences a couple summers ago.

Instead, it fell flat. Dreadfully flat. Flat to the point that the musical genre has been resuscitated on. . .TV.

That’s right! The musical is back in the form of great shows like “Glee” and “Treme“. So, once again, TV outdoes film. It’s an under reported story over the last ten years: TV beats film in just about every way it can. Now, the musical is on that list as well.

But if you prefer the features, you can buy this musical on DVD.

Leap Year

“I just know that there are a lot of people who will say it is the worst film of 2010.”

This isn’t my review, or my opinion. I didn’t even see this movie. You know who spoke that quote? Matthew Goode. The co-star of this film.

Not only did he give us that gem, he also went on to describe the movie as “turgid” and mentioned that he only did the movie because it filmed close to his home.

So, I suppose, in essence he sort of submarined the movie. But I see it completely differently. It would be amazing if Leap Year, rather than distancing itself from these comments, fully embraced them.

Imagine seeing that quote from Matthew Goode on the DVD Box. Then, you see it paired with a dozen bad reviews on the back. You’re in the store thinking, “Wow, not only did critics hate this movie, but the co-star thought it was terrible. I kinda have to see this.”

So rather than hoping that your rom-com catnip is alluring enough to make your DVD stand out from the pack, suddenly everyone who walks into Blockbuster see what may be the worst movie of all time staring them in the face. That morbid curiosity could actually make this a DVD hit.

Some day again there will be something interesting in the TV on DVD category, but it’s not this week. Though it is a bit surprising to find out that “Dirt” was on the air for two seasons.

Matthew Goode Auditioned for The Hobbit’s Bilbo Baggins

When you think of Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit, do you think of a 6 foot 2 British actor? Most of us don’t but that didn’t stop Matthew Goode from throwing his hat in the casting ring for the Guillermo del Toro adaptation. According to The One Ring, they’ve discovered that the Watchmen star recently auditioned for the coveted role of the film’s title character.

Matthew Goode isn’t a big star who you could easily recognize if you heard his name or even saw his face, so his attempt for this role isn’t that far fetched. According to a recent interview he’s well aware of his physical limitations when it comes to the character Bilbo Bobbins, but he thought he’d give it a shot anyway.

“Now he’s a father, Goode doesn’t even like traveling that much. But just before we met, he’d auditioned for the role of Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo del Toro’s two-part film of The Hobbit. As he is the first to admit, he’s not an obvious choice – ‘Look at the size of me for Christ’s sake!’ If he got the part, he would, he says, find it almost impossible to refuse – despite the fact that it would involve him spending several months in New Zealand.”

Can we really blame him for trying to get in on some Hobbit action? Unfortunately, this means the creative team behind the film are still trying to nail down the right actor for the part, and it’s starting to get annoying. This must be how people felt in 1939 when the role of Scarlett O’Hara was being cast for Gone With the Wind. Can we hire an actor already?

A Single Man: Movie Review

Get ready for an an award winning film. First time director Tom Ford’s film A Single Man is a refreshing reminder of what going to the theaters should be like. Surprising, heart-warming, depressing, thought-provoking and above all interesting. The film is as beautiful on the surface as it is touching at its core. Not to be confused with the Cohen Brother’s A Serious Man (which is a very different, and good film), A Single Man is a story about a teacher in the 60’s who loses his lover in an accident and is left in a world that he no longer wishes to be a part of. Lets take a look…

Starring: Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode, Nicholas Hoult

Costumes: Arianne Phillips

The Good:

The Visuals: The literally pop off the screen, set the tone and enliven the audiences senses. From the use of dramatic colors to black and whites, the color palate, the lighting, the costumes, everything that went into the overall look was risky, bold, and completely awe-inspiring.
Colin Firth: The man can communicate so much with so little. Although he can, and does, go big and dramatic at times, it’s the small moments that make this performance one of the best I’ve seen all year. From the twitch of a pinky to the a small nod, he is able to covey an array of emotions in such a simple and effective way. This is truly one of his best performances to date.
Supporting Cast: I could list every actor in this film, they were all amazing. Nicholas Hoult, Matthew Goode, and the stunning Julianne Moore all gave performances that were full of life, love, and pain. Every single one of them stood out in their own way, in their own moment, and hopefully none of their efforts will be soon forgotten come Award Season.
The Script: The story plays with cliches but manages to avoid them in an interesting way. You know what’s coming (kind of) but you don’t really care because it’s not about the end result it’s about how you get there and all the interesting things that happen along the way that may or may not knock you our main character off course.
The Humor: The film could easily have been quite dreary and depressing, but luckily Ford managed to find some the lighter moments in the midst of the drama and thereby giving the audience a chance to breath or even laugh during some of the darkest moments.
The Layers: The characters in the film, although larger than life, acted and responded like real people, with real pasts, who have decades of background behind them and in doing so, it made the audience feel as if we were simply peaking in to their lives for a moment. With the careful mixture of humor, brilliant acting and amazing script, this is one of the most layered and interesting films of the year.
Topic of Homosexuality: I love a film about gay men that is un-apologetically gay and despite it being a main topic in the film it doesn’t define it. The film is about two gay lovers but that’s just something about it, there is SO much more to take in and I think this film is a real step forward in how homosexual love stories should be treated in film – like they belong.
Directing: From the choice of casting to the subtle camera movements, there were a number of amazing decisions made in this film, especially for a first time director. When making a film, so much can go wrong, it’s so refreshing to see it all go right.

The Bad:

It’s a bit too “artsy” for some but I didn’t have a problem with it. Overall I thought it was brilliantly well made with a number of great decisions by a first time director.

Rating: 9.5/10

Overall:

It’s a beautiful smart film, well acted from start to finish, that comes together perfectly and leaves you entranced. Basically… go see it!

Several promotional photos have been released for the upcoming Amy Adams film, Leap Year. It’s a romantic comedy that co-stars Matthew Goode and Adam Scott in an international love triangle. The film will debut a month before the Valentine’s Day rush in January, so its rom-com competition won’t be that steep.

When their four-year anniversary passes without a marriage proposal, Anna (Amy Adams) decides to take matters into her own hands. Investing in an Irish tradition that allows women to propose to men on February 29th, Anna decides to follow her boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) to Dublin and get down on one knee herself. But airplanes, weather and fate leave Anna stranded on the other side of Ireland, and she must enlist the help of handsome and surly Declan (Matthew Goode) to get her across the country. As Anna and Declan bicker across the Emerald Isle, they discover that the road to love can take you to very unexpected places.

Leap Year is directed by Anand Tucker from a screenplay written by Harry Elfont & Deborah Kaplan, and will hit theaters on January 8, 2010. Funny man Adam Scott typically plays the douche bag in everything, but here he’ll be a straight laced doctor, opposite Goode’s nonchalant bar tender. Between these two who will Amy choose?

A while ago we reported that Amy Adams was cast in a romantic comedy entitled Leap Year opposite, Watchmen star Matthew Goode. Just today the first trailer for the film has debuted online as well as the official poster that features both actors front and center. Leap Year is directed by Anand Tucker and co-stars Adam Scott and John Lithgow.

Does it bother anyone that this trailer features a few scenes taken directly out of The Proposal? This movie has a ridiculously generic plot, but likable actors, which will probably save it in the end. Leap Year is set to hit theaters early next year on January 8, 2010.

Tom Ford’s A Single Man Trailer

If Tom Ford‘s name doesn’t sound particularly familiar to you, it’s probably because you don’t submerge yourself in the world of fashion. I’m not judging because neither do I, but let me give you a little background. Ford is a noted fashion designer best known for his work as the creative director of the Gucci brand. This year with the feature A Single Man, Ford has crossed over from fashion to film director.

Take your first look at the film’s official trailer, which features stars Colin Firth and Julianne Moore.

Just this weekend Firth won the Best Actor Award at the Venice Film Festival for his work in A Single Man. The film is quickly becoming one to watch. I’ve even read comparison’s between this film and last year’s The Wrestler. In A Single Man Firth stars as a gay college professor grieving after the sudden death of his long time lover.

The film also co-stars Matthew Goode and Ginnifer Goodwin. It’s official release date has yet to be announced, but we’ll let you know as soon as it becomes available.

Matthew Goode Joins Ricky Gervais in Cemetery Junction

Many of you who went to see Zack Snyder’s Watchmen had some issues with the casting of Matthew Goode as Dr. Ozymadias. Some felt he was too young, while other’s thought his acting wasn’t up to par. Granted Goode’s resume doesn’t boast of many American films, but I still think he deserves a fair shot. According to THR, comedic genius Ricky Gervais must see something in him because he just cast the actor in his latest comedy, Cemetery Junction.

Cemetery Junction is a dramedy that takes places during the 1970′s. The story focuses on a group of salesmen who work at Prudential Insurance. It will chronicle the ups and downs of their relationships with each other and the respective women in their lives. Goode will portray a “go getter” who just so happens to be dating his bosses daughter. Gervais and collaborator Stephen Merchant both wrote the screenplay and will also direct.

This is one of several romantic comedies on the horizon for Goode. He’s already earned a principle role in the film Leap Year, which will co-star Amy Adams. I guess I’m one of the many people who choose to sweep his 2004 rom-com, Chasing Liberty with Mandy Moore under the rug. Yep, that was him in that. I shamelessly watched it on ABC Family one Sunday. The options were pretty slim that afternoon.

Adam Scott Joins Amy Adams and Matthew Goode in Leap Year

If you haven’t been informed of the casting bits surrounding the upcoming romantic comedy Leap Year, I’m about to break it down. Last month Variety reported that Watchmen alum Matthew Goode had been cast in the film to star opposite, Amy Adams. Adams will play a woman who travels to Ireland to find her boyfriend. Once she’s there she plans on proposing to him, but due to bad weather she gets lost and needs help from a native, cue Goode. Goode will play an Irish innkeeper who will be Adam’s cross-country guide. Who will play the role of the missing boyfriend you ask? According to Cinemablend, Adam Scott that’s who!

Adam Scott has just signed on to co-star in Leap Year, and will join Goode and Adams when the film starts shooting on location this month. If you don’t recognized Scott’s name you’d probably know his face. He’s been around for a long time, with supporting roles in Step Brothers, Knocked Up, and most recently The Great Buck Howard. He is an amazing actor and has great comedic timing. He has that witty, smart ass type of delivery that everyone tries to pull of but can’t. I didn’t want to go back this far, but he played Griff during the last high school year of the TV series Boy Meets World. Does that ring a bell?

Leap Year, will be directed by Anand Tucker with a script written by Harry Elfont and Doug Kaplan. Hopefully this movie will give people and opportunity to see Matthew Goode in a different capacity than what was shown in Watchmen. That was his first big picture, and a lot of people were turned off by his performance. It didn’t bother me as much, but to each his own.

CASTING: Ginnifer Goodwin and Nicholas Hoult Join A Single Man

THR is saying that Ginnifer Goodwin (“Big Love”) and Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy) have both signed onto A Single Man. an adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s 1964 novel. They will be joining fellow cast member Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, and Matthew Goode.

The story is about an English professor who, after the sudden death of his partner tries to go about his typical day in Los Angeles. Tom Ford will be directing that film with helped to adapt along with writer David Scearce.

Goodwin is Mrs. Strunk, a suburban mom who doesn’t share her husband’s dislike of their neighbor, a gay professor (Firth). Hoult will play Kenny, a sexually ambiguous grad student who shows an unusual interest in the professor. Wow, when the hell did he grow up in to, yes that attractive guy above?

The fun begins this week as principal photography has just begun in LA!
