Another solid film coming out of Sundance, Smashed is one of those films that may seem like “just another Sundance film” but has enough twists and interesting dynamics that is seperates it from the pack. And though Mary Elizabeth Winstead steals the movie with one of her best performances to date, the film’s strong supporting cast and a number of surprising and fun moments are really what make it a success.

Remakes are a tricky business, but they’re a huge chunk of the world of horror these days. The trend was kicked off by the surprising success of 2003′s Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, and since then we’ve seen many of the beloved horror films from the 1970’s and 80’s rebooted for a modern audience. The makers of the 2011 film The Thing sidestepped remaking John Carpenter’s cult masterpiece by going the prequel root – it’s basically the same story, but without using the same characters. Taking on the mantel, the jacket and the flamethrower of Kurt Russell’s main character in John Carpenter’s The Thing would seem like a heavy load to bear for anyone, but Mary Elizabeth Winstead shrugged it off rather easily in the prequel. For her it was the same universe but in no way a do-over, and that approach informed her character and her approach. We talked about the movie, the reshoots and some spoilers in our talk. Check it out…

An isolated arctic base. Limited number of people. Contact with an Alien presence. People who are replicated by an alien species so perfectly that it causes dissension in the ranks. Flamethrowers. So far, this fits the description of both 1982′s and 2011′s version of The Thing. In the modern version there are women – with the cast led by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. This version is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., and the trailer is upon us. Take a look…

This weekend Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World hits theaters with two bad-ass, weapons wielding, beautiful ladies and not too long ago we were lucky enough to sit down with Mary Elizabeth Winstead who plays Ramona Flowers and Ellen Wong who plays Knives Chau and talk to them about making miracles happen (aka a great film). Both actresses are somewhat unknown, but not for long. Both of them turn out amazing performances and add the much needed heart and depth to the film while still kicking ass.
Check out our interview with them below (and after check out our interviews with Edgar Wright, Anna Kendrick, Michael Cera and Jason Schwartzman)…
