Everyone always complains that there are not enough good movies out there. I always hear, “This year has been especially bad.” If you’re saying that, you’re not opening your eyes, from big blockbusters, to horror films, animations, and independent films, there have been plenty of quality films released this year. Yes there were also the Wolverine‘s and All About Steve‘s trying to to pull you down, but don’t say you weren’t warned!
As I was creating my list, there were so many great films this year that I had to expand my Top 10 to a Top 15 with 15 more honorable mentions. Without further ago here they are…

A short while ago I has to opportunity to speak with Adam Elliot the writer/director (and if he had his way the entire crew) of the stunningly and inspiring clayography, Mary and Max. After watching the film Elliot became one of my new hero’s. I had received a DVD titled Max and Mary, which I heard had done well at Sundance, but was not expecting anything much of it. Well serves me right. This is one of, if not the best film of the year. From the minuet details of the characters and the voices, to the unique script and the tone, this is the movie you’ve been waiting for. Sadly, it’s just not the type of film that you can find anywhere, but towards the bottom of the interview are details on how you can find and enjoy the film, and you must see it.
I could go on and on about how I feel about the film but I’ll shut up and let him to the talking…

For those of you who haven’t heard, Mary and Max is the extraordinary film that opened Sundance Film Festival and blew audiences away. It was the first animated film to ever open the festival and was picked not because of it’s animation but because as festival Director Geoffrey Gilmore said, “It’s just a great story.” The film is filled with the all star cast of voices of Toni Collette, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Eric Bana.

The Sundance Film Festival started its ten day run last night with the screening of Mary and Max. Over 1,000 people crammed into the Eccles Theatre to catch the flick as well as a rare glimpse of tournament founder Robert Redford.
Redford welcomed the crowd with a short speech expressing his love for cinema, “Film-and all types of art-can show us the truth beneath and within the human experience.”
