The Green Lantern has a listed production budget of $200 Million dollars. Currently the film has made $114 Million domestic, with that total edging toward maybe crossing over $120 Million. Currently the international numbers list the all-in total at $40 Million, which means even if a studio got every dollar of every ticket (they don’t, the rule of thumb is usually a 2-1 ratio), they haven’t made a profit, and may never. And yet Jeff Robinov has told the LA Times that the sequel – which they are supposedly working on – needs to be “edgier.”

As with any movie like this, Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively and Martin Campbell are surely locked into multi-picture deals to return, so the studio has the base they need to go forward. But what they haven’t proved is that anyone cared. Warners is going forward with a Clash of the Titans sequel, but though the domestic numbers weren’t great, the film was huge internationally, and did nearly half a billion dollars worldwide.

There are two reasons to keep talking this up. One is that they’re trying to keep interest going, and get people seeing the film, even though it’s perceived as a misfire or flop. This may not lead to a future movie, but it could lead to a break-even balance (not that Warner Brothers is having a bad summer, with both Harry Potter, The Hangover Part IIand Horrible Bosses being hugely profitable). The other is that they’re serious, in an attempt to bludgeon audiences into seeing more Lantern with a slightly different (more Batman-based) take. We’ve seen the studios pursue interestingly stupid attempts at using brand name recognition to get audiences in theaters, ala Battleship, so perhaps they would rather gamble on something that seems like a losing bet with name recognition than an unknown. Or perhaps international will save Lantern. Still, until we get closer, this just seems to be talk.

Do you want a Green Lantern sequel?

After all the hype and build up, it’s finally time for Green Lantern to take a swing at the box office this weekend and show us what it’s got! This has been a film long time coming, one we’ve seen bits of since last year’s Comic-Con. Now it’s finally time for Ryan Reynolds to appear in his skin tight CGI spandex, spewing witty lines. The film is not perfect, and at times it feels extremely over-worked, but there are a number of good performances and enough entertaining moments that make it worth a journey to the theater. Though I would recommend saving yourself a couple of bucks and seeing it in 2D instead of 3D, you won’t miss out on anything. Find out more below…

The Players:

Director: Martin Campbell

Screenplay: Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, Marc Guggenheim, Michael Goldenberg

Screen Story: Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, Marc Guggenheim

Actors: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Temuera Morrison, Tim Robbins, Geoffrey Rush, Angela Bassett, Michael Clarke Duncan

Original Music by: James Newton Howard

Cinematography by: Dion Beebe

The Plot:

Hal Jordan is a bad-ass test pilot with a whole lot of issues when one day a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers. Soon he is given all the powers he can imagine, and is asked to help keep the peace within the universe and save planet earth.

The Good:

Peter Sarsgaard: Sarsgaard steals almost every scene he’s in during the film (and not just because his skull takes up most of the screen) and most of the laughs. He brought a real sense of depth to the character and wasn’t afraid to play with it. He’s really the highlight of the film.

The Final Act: Though the film gets off to a slow start (see “The Bad”), the final act really picks up and finally we see the potential that we all knew Ryan Reynolds had, paying off. In the last 35 minutes they’re somehow able to recapture the tension and drama that’s needed for us to be invested in the film. Once they’re able to finally get to the actual film, they sore and it’s really a fun ride.

The Special Effects on Earth: For me, the special effects on earth were much more convincing than the ones on Mogo and in outer-space. The suit and the action sequences were much more grounded than they were in outer space (pun intended). Though the visual effects on Mogo and in space were impressive at times, it still felt like lots of green splashes of goo everywhere and like we were looking at a CGI world. I always prefer the realistic type of effects and I was far more impressed by the creativity they were able to bring to earth.

The So-So:

Ryan Reynolds: He shows such potential in this film at times that I hate to call him “so-s0″ but because of some poor editing choices or problems in the script, his innate humor was never given the chance to breathe nor strike a cord with the audience. He’s able to tackle the more challenging dramatic scenes quite well, it’s the humorous ones that just didn’t quite hit home — since we know he’s better than that, I’m going to assume it was a story or post-production issue, and not him. And if they’re able to keep up the pace of the last act, I’d happily go to see him in another Green Lantern film.

The Editing: As I spoke about with the timing of Ryan Reynolds humor, it felt like there was something off with the editing. In attempting to speed up the first act, they didn’t allow for the natural comedy that Reynolds is capable of and sped past all the entertaining bits to get to more exposition. THOUGH, one of the big things that brought the film back for me in the second act was the interesting cuts between Hal and Hector both changing. It’s hard to say is that was the editing, the writing or a combination of the two, but it was extremely well done.

The Bad:

The First Act: From bad editing, to music that sounded unfinished, to a plethora of plot-lines not properly being tied together, the first act of this film is slow and uninteresting. They needed to either slow down and explain the origins of the story or skip past some of the explanation. They begin the film somewhere in the middle and you get both too much and not enough at the same time.

The Music: I hate saying this, but it felt like an unfinished score. Howard is a great composer, one who has blown us away time and time again. I’m not sure if we heard pieces of the temp score because we screened the film early, or if they cut the film after they scored it and did not allow Howard to adjust the music to the new cuts, but something was definitely off. There are scenes where they just allow the music to drop out and others where the timing is off. Something tells me Howard is not happy right now because he’s better than this.

Overall:

Again, the film started out with both too much and too little, and needed to decide what it was and ground itself. Luckily, they were somehow able to get it back, set the tone and end the film with a bang. It’s not a perfect film and you can easily skip the 3D, but it was easy to watch and Sarsgaard’s performance and Reynolds charisma is enough to make it worth a trip to the theaters,

The Green Lantern - which is due out June 17 – has so far only had one trailer that left the fan-base cold. It featured a more jokey Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, and it seemed to be played for laughs. For this weekend’s WonderCon presentation, Warner Brothers went the exact opposite direction with the Martin Campbell-helmed Superhero adaptation, and sold both the scale and the seriousness of the world of Green Lantern. Check it out…

There are a few moments of levity in the trailer – which play well – but for the most part the footage sells that this is world-building. It’s fun to look in the background, as the aliens go from humanoid (Mark Strong‘s Sinestro) to less so (Geoffrey Rush‘s voiced Tomar-re). And when the footage keeps to its space-based content – with Temuera Morrison’s Abin Sur rushing to earth after a ferocious attack – The Green Lantern looks like something we haven’t seen from a comic-book movie before. If this is the tone of the film, then the scale here will separate this from the comic-book pack.

The ending does concentrate on Earth, and there we see Peter Sarsgaard‘s Hector Hammond, who is obviously going through some transformation into an evil being. We also see very little of Blake Lively‘s character.

There’s a couple ways to look at this footage, but there’s no denying it’s amped up the expectations for The Green Lantern (especially since the first trailer was a dud). The main thing is that its makers knew their target demographic and sold it to them at WonderCon. There’s a lot of ground to cover in the film in terms of turning Hal Jordan into The Green Lantern, and we haven’t seen much of Blake Lively in action, so it’s hard to say that what was shown is representative of the whole, or just cherry-picked money shots.

We’re two and a half months away, so marketing is going to kick into over drive here shortly. But this is their best foot forward.

Can you recite the Green Lantern’s oath?

One of the most anticipated press conferences that took place at this year’s Comic-Con was Warner Bros’ Green Lantern. Last week the studio unleashed the first photos, this week we got some character posters and now we have an interview with the man himself Ryan Reynolds, along with co-stars Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, and director Martin Campbell.

Here are some of the video highlights from the interview followed by all the details they had to add about the film…

The Story:

MC: It’s not a tough one to explain. I think it’s all very, very clear. I think the story that we are telling which is the Hal Jordon story. The fact that he is taken up to Oa, he’s inducted, he becomes green lantern, the way in which the ring works through will power, the stronger your will power, the stronger your construct, whatever your imagination cares to create. The actual story is very simple. There are many complex characters and all the chars from the origin story go on to the dark side in later comics and things, but I think it’s very straight forward.

RR: There’s a lot of them that are inspiring. Unlike many of the other comic books, it’s such a vast universe to this character and his contemporaries. I read a few different ones. For the most part this is an origin story and I was able to focus a little on secret origins but our script is a much more in depth interpretation of that basic storyline. Geoff Johns described this thing as a version of Star Wars in the DC universe. I think that was a pretty apt description. You have so much you can mine out of this, these comics and this character. Any time you’re dealing with a guy who has something unbelievable and unsurmountable to overcome, it makes for an interesting story. As an actor, it’s an interesting and excellent thing to get an opportunity to play. This guy has a distinct starting point, he’s a bit of a fractured human being, seen his father die. Later in life he’s cocky and aimless. It’s this extraordinary power bestowed on him that sets him on a humbling path.

How tight IS this costume?

RR: Yeah, this costume is a motion capture suit that I’m wearing, so because it’s not seen on camera they’ve managed to find a material that I think most would agree is the most aggravating substance on earth. We’re shooting in Louisiana which is pretty close to the sun. the suit’s been difficult running around in a unitard in the NO summer heat. If I were wearing anything, it’s going to be pretty uncomfortable doing an action movie in the deep south this time.

Stunt and Training:

RR: The training’s just different. You’re not training on an aesthetic level, you’re training on a functional ability. You want to stay out of the hospital as long as possible, but it is a MC movie so you’re bound to be there once or twice. He pushes you hard so I think that’s why – - Martin described it as a knife fight in a phone booth. That’s an apt description of how his action feels. … it’s been fun to train in that regard.

BL: I got to be in The Matrix rig. This rig invented for The Matrix. I think it goes about 20 feet high but I like to say 50 so please spread that rumor. I’m on this gyroscopic waist belt. It works towards your weight and makes you nauseous. That was the extent of my stunts but we did some test pilot training too.

Lets talk Villains and the actors behind them:

PS: [Hector Hammond] is a biologist. He teaches the university but in his private time is quite interested in extremophiles, animals that live in extreme environments on earth as a way to understand creatures on other planets. There’s a fine line between science and wishful thinking. I thought about a lot of people who have sort of stretched our ideas. Added a little bit of creativity to science like Carl Sagan or Isaac Asimov. I read more things like that than straight comics when I was young. A sense of wonder about the world where you start filling in gaps which is what most scientists try not to do. I really thought of him as kind of a dreamer in a lot of ways.

And of course Sinestro?

MS: I’m not sure you prepare for villains necessarily. You prepare for a character. The way I look at villains is nobody’s born evil. Usually something happens to their time on the planet or in space that causes them to become that. You have to look at who he is, what he stands for and what he believes in. He is an incredibly organized, fearless, exponent of the GL core who believes who knows best. In this movie as it stands, he becomes mentor to the newly minted human green lantern and guides him through his first steps. We deal with that process so I don’t think of him as a villain. He’s just an incredibly powerful presence who knows what he believes and what he wants to be right. if there’s anything that causes him later on to spill over to the dark side, it’s his unquestioning belief in his rightness.

Despite Ryan’s success, he was never guaranteed the part….

MC: We did test a few actors. We tested a few of the twice. We went to England and tested a few people. Really, and it’s a very serious consideration. This is not just one film but if it’s successful we’ll do a sequel so we hope this goes on for a long time. Everyone was good. Ryan was exceptional.

DD: We found out they always want to see the guy in the mask as part of the test. Ryan looks really good in a mask.

RR: I have one little anecdote I haven’t mentioned yet – - there was a Cinderella element to it because the FX house had this thing called life casts. You can build a prosthetic around that. The FX house that was asked to make the Green Lantern mask had no idea who was auditioning, but they arbitrarily chose my head from their vast catalogs of heads. So when I showed up, my mask fit a little better than maybe Regis P or Richard Chamberlain’s would have fit.

Edge of Darkness marks the return of Oscar winner Mel Gibson to the big screen. He’s been active behind the scenes directing such films as Apocalypto but this is the first time he’s stepped in front of the camera in seven and a half years. In Edge of Darkness he plays a grief stricken cop looking for answers regarding his daughter’s murder. What appears to be a senseless act of violence barely touches the web of lies and deception brewing beneath the surface…

The Players:

Director: Martin Campbell

Writers: William Monahan, Andrew Bovell

Cast: Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, Bojana Novakovic, Shawn Roberts, David Aaron Baker, Jay O. Sanders, Denis O’ Hare, Damien Young

Cinematography: Phil Meheux

Music: Howard Shore

The Plot:

Thomas Craven is a single, Boston Detective whose life is shaken to the core when his only child, Emma (Novakovic) is brutally murdered on his front porch. When he’s unable to find a logical reason behind her death, he decides to do some detective work on his own time, and on his own terms. He interrogates, follows, and harasses whoever he has to in order to find out the truth. When all clues lead back to a top secret research facility where Emma worked, people end up dying left and right and most of them are by his hand.

The Good:

Mel Gibson: It takes a moment to adjust to Gibson’s thick Boston accent in the film, but once you do he takes you on a vengeful and thrilling ride. His performance is brutally honest and he makes the character’s drastic decisions seem somewhat justifiable no matter how insane they are.

Screenplay: Much like The Departed, this film has multiple layers with a lot of characters interweaving with one another. Every person plays a role in the bigger picture, which helps push the story and keep us interested as an audience.

The Direction: The overall look of this film was gritty, but the right angles at the right time made it visually stunning.

Relationships: The relationship between Tom and Emma Craven was shown throughout the film even after her death, and it unfolds in a way that causes you to get invested in them. You begin to understand why he’s as angry and resentful as he is because of this great loss.

The Bad:

The Shootouts: This is the one problem I had, and without giving too much away, there are a few scenes where guns seem like the only option, even though they’re really not. Rather than show some type of legitimate resolution, a person just gets shot in the chest. That’s it.

Overall:

Edge of Darkness is a well written thriller that keeps you entertained and guessing simultaneously. Even though there’s enough action to gain your attention, the strong story is what will keep it. Mel Gibson is back, and it feels like he never left.

Rating: 9/10

Edge of Darkness opens in theaters nationwide on January 29, 2010.

Most of the movies released from Warner Bros are more serious in tone such as The Dark Knight, Watchmen, 300, and even Superman Returns to a certain extent. When news broke that the studio was planning on adapting the Green Lantern story for the big screen the question everyone had on their mind was, will this be another Batman? When Collider sat down with Campbell he cleared up the speculation regarding the overall vibe, which won’t be in vain of the “Nolanverse,” but will lean much closer to the likeness of Iron Man.

“It will be much more in the tone of Iron Man. It’s got to be. Certainly not Batman Begins, which is a pretty dark movie. No, he’s the Hal Jordan character who’s the sort of shoot from the hip, irresponsible kind of cocky test pilot if you will. In fact, the character seems to be the least likely to be chosen as Green Lantern. Well, of course that’s the fun of it. So no, it’ll be much more like Iron Man. So it’ll have one foot in reality if you see what I mean.”

The Green Lantern is more of a second string character in comparison to the other comic book heroes with full fledgling franchises, so the tone he sets here is integral to its success. Campbell also revealed in the interview that Jordan goes to another planet in the film, so you have to have take a step into another direction with that type of stuff going on. It sounds like Green Lantern will be a lot more fantasy than reality.

Do you think Green Lantern will be as successful as Iron Man or Batman?

There are some crazy people out in Hollywood who still want to remake the Alfred Hitchcock classic, The Birds. When word first spread about the film, director Martin Campbell was attached with actress Naomi Watts rumored to star, but there’s been a change of plans. Campbell has decided to walk away from the project.

According to Pajiba, Campbell’s priorities have shifted from The Birds remake to the comic book adaptation of The Green Lantern. With a film of that caliber, he had to choose one over the other, and went with the superhero flick. His exit doesn’t mean the movie is finished, because Universal has several replacements in mind including Dennis Iliades, the guy who brought us the remake of The Last House on the Left.

Rumor has it that Campbell was gearing towards a PG-13 version of the film, while Iliades may want to amp up the horror factor and go for an R rating. He hasn’t officially been named as the replacement director, but he appears to be next in line. As for the film’s leading lady, no one knows Watt’s current status, but it wouldn’t be a shock if she also decided to jump ship. She can’t play the lead in every major horror remake can she?

What do you think about Campbell leaving The Birds remake?

A trailer has finally been released for Martin Campbell‘s latest film, Edge of Darkness. The film stars Mel Gibson as a former Boston detective whose daughter is murdered, causing him to take matters into his own hands by searching for her killer. The screenplay was written by Oscar winning scribe William Monahan (The Departed), and looks like a worthy follow up to his previous work.

Check out the first trailer for Edge of Darkness…

The cast for this film is filled with talent such as Ray Winstone and Danny Huston. Being that Monahan is a Boston native I’m going to let the fact that the majority of his films take place there slide. As long as the quality continues to stay high like The Departed, he can represent Beantown as long as he likes. It’s good to see some old school vigilante Mel Gibson. I’m happy to see him in front of the camera again.

Edge of Darkness gets released on January 29th, 2010

The Warner Bros. live action take of the Green Lantern has hit a snag. Ryan Reynolds was recently cast as the title character in the film that has been fast tracked into production by the studio. The location of choice for the shoot is down under in Australia, the same place they shot the majority of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. That should have been a sign of bad luck, because the setting is what’s causing the film some financial woes. More on the story below.

According to Production Weekly’s Twitter feed, the Green Lantern’s film budget has come under attack. It stated that Green Lantern’s “proposed Australian shoot is understood to be under threat after the rising Australian dollar has blown out production costs.” What does this mean for the film’s schedule? Martin Campbell is directing the feature, which was expected to begin shooting in January.

Now that GL‘s going through some tough times, does that mean Reynolds can place his focus on the Deadpool movie? I’ve been weary of his involvement in both films since his casting. Physically he looks like a Green Lantern, but personality wise he’s Deadpool all the way. At the moment no one knows what necessary adjustments will be made to the film’s schedule due to the recent financial strain. Perhaps this is a sign?

What do you think about the current state of the Green Lantern movie?

It’s official! Over at Variety they are reporting that Ryan Reynolds has beat out Bradley Cooper and Justin Timberlake for the role of Hal Jordan in the upcoming comic adaptation, Green Lantern. Yesterday and today has been filled with speculation over who will be the one to land the coveted role, and finally a decision has been made.

Green Lantern is based off of the DC Comics character of the same name. The film will be directed by Martin Campbell, and produced and distributed by Warner Brothers. The news just broke that Reynolds will star as the ringed hero, making this another superhero notch on the actor’s belt. Green Lantern will be released on June 17, 2011, which is the same year the X-Men Deadpool spin-off should make it’s debut.

First of all, thank God Justin Timberlake did not land this role. If he did, I would have lost all respect for Warner Bros, and everyone else involved. Second, I was kind of leaning towards Bradley Cooper. I actually wanted the studio to go with an unknown, but if they had to choose, Bradley was my pick. I think Reynolds has the physical look for the character, but I think playing Deadpool may add some confusion for the fans. He’s made the jump from Marvel to DC from his roles as Hannibal King (Blade Trinity) to Wade Wilson (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) to Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern.

Reynolds has also been considered the prime candidate to play another DC Comics character The Flash, which has a live action adaptation still in development. How many heroes can this man play? I would much rather see him stick with Deadpool.

What do you think about Ryan Reynolds being cast as the Green Lantern? Do you think his multiple comic book portrayals will overwhelm fans?

Some movies are unfortunately shrouded with problems, and it looks like Zack Snyder’s latest project is one of them. There were already several casting issues that had to be worked out for the all girl led Sucker Punch, and now it’s release date has been moved. I wonder if another movie he did this year has anything to do with this? Synder’s not the only one feeling the burn, director Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern comic book adaptation is also being shuffled. The film’s Christmas 2010 release date is no longer set in stone, and has been pushed back to 2011.

Check out the new dates after the jump.

Both Sucker Punch and Green Lantern are being distributed by Warner Brothers and they’ve recently announced new release dates for each of them. According to /Film, Sucker Punch was originally set to hit theaters on October 8, 2010. Now, we can expect it to bow on March 25, 2011. This will be the third film that Snyder has directed with the studio that will debut in March. The previous two were 300 and Watchmen.

As for Green Lantern, I’m actually happy they decided to push it back. It’s December 17, 2010 date has been moved to June 17th 2011. In my opinion it makes so much more sense for it to premiere in the summer rather than the winter holiday season. Plus, it will give Warner and DC something to compete with since so many huge Marvel properties will be dropping that year, including Spiderman 4.

What do you think of the latest schedule changes? Do you think they’re a good sign or a bad idea?

It looks as if someone’s decided to take a risk and invest in Mel Gibson’ s career again. Last November Gibson wrapped a project entitled Edge of Darkness, which he shot with Ray Winstone and Danny Huston. For months the film has been looking for a distribution home, and finally it’s found one. According to Variety, Warner Brothers has decided to take the plunge and has acquired the rights to the film. The feature is based on the BBC miniseries of the same name, which”centered on a veteran homicide detective for the Boston Police Dept, whose only child is murdered on the steps of his home.”

Martin Campbell directed the film that is currently in post production. The script was adapted from an original story by Troy Kennedy Martin, and was written by go-to-guy William Monahan and Andrew Bovell. The production team behind the film includes Graham King who produced The Departed, and Michael Wearing who produced the original miniseries.

Mel Gibson’s last major film project was the 2006 epic Apocolypto, which he directed but did not star. Ray Winstone was last seen in the summer blockbuster Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, while Danny Huston will star as William Stryker in this year’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
