New ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Villain Revealed (Spoilers!)

Anyone who regularly reads ScreenCrave knows that we’re chomping at the bit for the massively anticipated new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, which is not only the final film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, but is also poised to be one of the biggest blockbusters in recent memory. So far, we know the film takes place eight years after The Dark Knight, and features Bane and Catwoman as the primary villains. Well, now we know something else: one of the performers in the film let it slip who his/her/it’s (trying to avoid spoilers above the jump!) character was, and it’s a doozy of a villain from the classic Batman comics. Curious who it is? Dig in after the jump.

There has been a lot of speculation that Marion Cotillard, who is officially signed on to play a woman named “Miranda Tate,” would actually be playing Talia al Ghul, the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul, the villain portrayed by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins. Cotillard, however, has consistently denied this.

Well, just this week, 12 year old actress Joey King (who bears a remarkable resemblance to Cotillard), slipped and admitted the following to My Entertainment World:

I play young Talia al Ghul. I can’t give too much away because I promised Mr. Nolan I wouldn’t say anything. There are too many secrets about the character and the movie.

Well, there you have it—Talia al Ghul, classic villainess from the Batman comics, is now confirmed to be in The Dark Knight Rises. That brings the villain count to three—will that be enough for the final Batman film from Nolan and co.?

Contagion: Movie Review

Fall is off to a great start with Steven Soderbergh‘s Contagion kicking off the September releases. With an all star cast – including Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet and Jude Law among others – the film follows a new disease from Day 2 on as it infects the population, and scientists and doctors attempt to control and cure it. Soderbergh deftly avoids most of the genre’s pitfalls by keeping the film in a “you are there” approach that grounds the material, and will have most audiences reaching for the Purell when the film ends.

The Plot:

Beth Emhoff (Paltrow) returns to Minnesota from a trip abroad with what appears to be a slight cold, though possibly just jet lag. The next day she’s having seizures and is hospitalized. It’s a huge shock to her husband Mitch (Damon), especially when she dies shortly thereafter. He’s immune, but his son and daughter are not. As the disease spreads the CDC reacts by sending in Dr. Erin Mears (Winslet) to investigate Beth’s death and they try to contain the outbreak, but between Beth’s stop in Chicago (to visit an old lover) to the others in Hong Kong who were around her, the disease quickly goes global. The government tries to both solve it – with the lead doctor being Dr. Ally Hextall (Ehle) – and contain it. But in the 21st century word can’t be contained, especially when people like Alan Krumwiede (Jude Law) write about it on the internet and hope to profit from it.

The Good:

Ensemble: One of the things that old school filmmakers knew about using a lot of stars in their films was that having familiar faces grounds you immediately in which location you’re at, regardless of where the last scene took place. Marion Cotillard’s character is in Asia, Jude Law’s in San Fransisco, Matt Damon’s in Minnesota – the film darts around the globe, but because the plot follows the disease you never feel lost, and all of the actors get a moment to shine. With all the heavy hitters in the cast, it’s surprising that Jennifer Ehle walks away with the movie. As one of the key doctors trying to figure out a cure, Ehle manages to be smart, confident and surprisingly sexy (especially for someone wearing a Tyvek suit for much of the film). Though Ehle’s been acting for a while now, this is that role. She’s going to be in a lot more shortly.
Follow the Disease: Though the film does develop its characters well enough, the film never tries to drum up too much added melodrama for the situation. There is some melodrama – especially with Damon’s Emhoff character, who has a family that isn’t safe and as the disease progresses has to worry about his daughter not only staying safe, but also the fact that she’s a tween girl who wants to live a normal life. That works – it humanizes the consequences – but often these films pile incident on incident (often there’s a couple about to get divorced, a love triangle, etc.). As such the film work like gangbusters because it functions more as a procedural.
Getting Under Your Skin: The film opens with a sequence where it shows people touching things, be it public locations, their faces, or a glass handed to them. Soderbergh does a brilliant job of setting the viewer on edge on how easy we treat most of the world, and how often people expose themselves to the possibility of germs. There’s just enough of that to make anyone freaked out.

The Bad:

Cleanliness: Though never as terrible as Traffic at its worst, there are some plot points that either go nowhere (the Cotillard section feels like a throwaway, though that’s the point), or goes for the hammer of obviousness. This may be a byproduct of this sort of storytelling, and for the most part the film does a good job of avoiding being cloying. Thankfully such intrusions are kept to a minimum, but they’re also the things that stick out later as why the film isn’t a masterpiece. But, hey, settling for being a really good film is good enough.

Overall:

This is Soderbergh at his best; Contagion is fascinating to watch. Though some might prefer a more horrific “what if” situation, the film communicates great ideas about how our society functions, and where it breaks down. And more than any recent picture, Contagion really captures the internet era (arguably the film is more about that than the disease), where people are texting their reactions to tragedy, and someone leaking word about a possible shutdown or blockade goes as viral as the virus itself.

Midnight in Paris: Movie Review

Woody Allen‘s highly mysterious (and rightfully so) film Midnight in Paris has made its way back from Cannes and will be appearing in theaters in America this weekend. For me, this is one of my favorite Woody Allen films in a long time. It’s not necessarily what you would expect from Allen, though it does follow certain patterns we’ve come to know from him and one can definitely see references to his earlier work. There’s something both nostalgic and yet fresh about the film that makes it fun to watch. It’s finely made, finely acted and overall a fine picture to find yourself at this weekend…

The Plot:

Mightnight in Paris is romantic comedy with a twist (that will not be given away in this review). The film starts with a couple traveling to the French capital for business and their different reactions to the world around them. The party includes a young engaged couple forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is better.

The Good:

The Acting: For me Corey Stoll who plays Ernest (no need for a last name here) steals the show. He does a fantastic job of bringing his character to life in a fun and lively way. Wilson is one of Allen’s best leads in a while, mainly because he’s so NOT Woody Allen like. His laid back persona allows you to watch a Woody Allen film without watching Woody Allen. Michael Sheen, brilliant as an American playing an anglophile. Alison Pill, Kathy Bates, Tom Hiddleston (I’m just listing the cast now) and all the rest all gave wonderful and surprising performances.
The Concept: Without giving anything away, it’s a bit far-fetched and not something entirely new, but the way that Allen handles the idea with such a nonchalance is really quite fun.
The Scenery: Allen and his cinematographer Darius Khondji really do an amazing job of capturing the feel, almost the smell of Paris in the spring time. They take their time establishing the location, light the scenes in a way that makes everyone and everything glow, and use some classic music to help you take it all in. Really well done.

The So-So:

Not Broad: This is not a film for everyone, and without giving too much away, you need to have a certain amount of knowledge of art history and literature and desire to know more about it in order to really find the film amusing. If you’re a nerd like me, it’s a blast and really fun to see so many well known faces, as well known names on the big screen.
Allen Cliches: It’s hard not to see patterns repeating themselves, it’s up to you whether you see that as good or bad. I for one didn’t mind them, in fact I rather enjoyed them, others may easily have a different opinion and one I can understand, just not relate to.

Overall:

This was a really interesting film and if you have any knowledge of literature or art your will definitely appreciate the references and find it humorous. It’s one of Allen’s better films of late, it’s extremely well made and the acting is superb. It was really a pleasant, fun experience to sit down to, and one well worth watching,

Updated: Marion Cotillard is Talia al Ghul, Gordon-Levitt is Roman Sionis in Dark Knight Rises?

It seems that the rumors surrounding Marion Cotillard and The Dark Knight Rises are back! Earlier this week, there was word that the actress was in talks to star in the sequel, with the role in question being Talia al Ghul. And according to a “press release” sent out by the studio, the Oscar winner has supposedly been confirmed for the part. Not only that, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been confirmed to play Roman Sionis. But this may be a hoax! The folks over at the Nolan Fans Forum deny the legitimacy of the announcement.

Here’s the supposed press release that was sent out:

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have been cast in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises and will join an ensemble cast alongside Christian Bale who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. They will play Talia al Ghul and Roman Sionis respectively.

On casting Cotillard, Director Christopher Nolan stated, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with Marion again and have no doubt she will be a great addition to our ensemble cast and bring to life a key part of the universe we have created as we finish our story.”

On the addition of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Nolan said, “I am thrilled to be working with Joseph again after a delightful experience working with him on Inception and am certain he will deliver another thrilling performance as one of Batman’s most popular villains.”

Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.

The Dark Knight Rises is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

This looks like an exact replica of the previous announcement which was sent out by Warner Bros when they announced Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway’s casting. Someone must have cut and pasted Levitt and Cotillard’s names and sent it out as the real deal. Sneaky, sneaky.

As previously stated Talia is the daughter or Ra’s Al Ghul, a villain who appeared in Batman Begins and was played by Liam Neeson. Damon Sionis is a gangster who moonlights as Black Mask.

Marion Cotillard in Talks for The Dark Knight Rises

Inception is invading The Dark Knight Rises. Christopher Nolan’s latest and final Batman pic will have its fair share of crossover stars including Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Now we’re hearing that French actress Marion Cotillard is also in talks and fans suspect that she might play Talia al Ghul!

The news of Cotillard’s casting originally stemmed from a French newspaper called Le Figaro that stated, “Marion Cotillard will join the production this summer in Los Angeles, where she will share the bill with Anne Hathaway.” As you can imagine, Batman fanboys everywhere went into a frenzy! They wanted to know if the rumor was true, and whether or not she’d be playing the speculated Talia.

THR ran a follow up to the story where the actress’ rep confirmed that she was in negotiations to star in The Dark Knight Rises, but nothing has been set in stone. Cotillard is pregnant and due to give birth this spring. They’re currently working out scheduling issues.

“The plan is for Cotillard to start shooting mid-June in London, film all summer in L.A. and Pittsburgh and wrap mid-November in New York.”

Inception: Movie Review

INCEPTION MOVIE REVIEW: It’s that time… time for all of you to go out and experience Inception. Some of you may have seen the film, others not, I have tried my best to keep any and all spoilers out of this review while still talking about the film as a whole. If you haven’t seen it, you should be fairly safe, if you have, there’s plenty for you to argue with me about as this is a rather massive review to reflect my enormous opinion about it.

Without anyone more pointless babble, lets get to it…

The Plot:

Lets not talk about that shall we? The less you know about Inception the better (though that’s not to say that’s it’s hard to understand once you’re in the film ).

The Good:

The Overall Idea: This is one big concept to tackle. The idea of our dreams and how one effects them is a risky topic to tackle because it’s endless and quite complex. Nolan makes it not only easy to understand (in terms of the story) but raises many interesting debates on “mind travel” that will leave you arguing in comment sections on blogs for weeks to come!
The Visuals: I don’t think I need to go in depth on this one. If you’ve seen a poster, a trailer, any artwork from this film, you know you’re in for a visual treat. It’s a beautiful film to watch especially certain scenes…
The Fred Astaire Throw Back: Absolutely amazing. In case the the “Fred Astaire” reference didn’t made sense to you, the scene I’m referring to (don’t worry it’s on posters and in the trailer) is the one with Joseph Gordan Levitt and Co. fighting in the hotel hallway — it’s a high-tech, action packed, and a direct throw back to when Fred Astaire walked up the wall for the first time and blew audiences away. Somehow Nolan has found a way to bring back that sense of wonder despite all the decades of special effects that have dulled audiences. I believe this scene was shot the good ol’ fashioned way with a rotating hallway and some wires. There is something about using camera techniques instead of CGI that is so much more fun to watch and gives the film a sense of integrity and wonder that most blockbusters wouldn’t both with.
The Supporting Cast: This is for the Nolan new comers mostly — Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy and the rest all felt right at home in the film. They added to the acting credibility and gave us more than just one-liners. That being said, below I will talk about the problems with some of the repeat casting…
The Attempt: Despite how big of a director Nolan is, studios want him to make what works, not take any risks or attempt something out of the box. It would have been so easy for him and he would have been so loved by both audiences and studios for jumping into another Batman right after The Dark Knight. To add to that if this movie flops it could be detrimental to the sales of the next Batman. Nolan stepped away from a guaranteed hit and took a big risk on this film by following his dream and making something reminiscent of Memento but on the studios summer-action film dime. He’s ballsy on all levels and despite what I think about his film, I have to respect his decision to make this film, his process and for the most part the outcome of Inception. It wasn’t perfect but that’s because it wasn’t safe, he took a chance and came out successful. Which leads us to…

The Bad:

Lack of a Wow Factor: Don’t crucify me yet, give me a moment to explain. Before I saw this movie I heard people making comments like “wow this movie is mind-blowing” and “I love walking out of a movie not fully understanding it” and that made me SO excited! I thought it was going to be like the Matrix all over again, where you have to watch it 10 times and write an essay to fully grasp it. That being said, I got this movie about half way through and there was no real surprise or twist for me. Once you get the character, who is quite simple, it’s all there and the story never contradicts it.
Dialogue/Script: Once again Nolan is great at the grand concepts and this movie is about as big as one can get and I applaud him for going there, but with a limitless world, there sure was a lot of repeat dialogue and a lot of interesting things not discussed. Something tells me this was because someone got nervous about this film not having “mass appeal.” The fact is, this film would have been better with half the dialogue, not as much marketing spelling things out and letting the audience figure out some of the characters for themselves
Leo in the Lead: Although in many ways his character Cobb is a “noble” character, at the heart of it all, he’s kind of a sap. Yes, it’s sweet that he loves a women, but he’s not fighting for anything that I really care about or can side with. It’s nice that “he wants his family back” and that’s only enough to make me pity him, not enough for me to follow him through anything and risk other characters lives who I find more interesting. He’s not fighting for humanity, the world, he’s just fighting for himself and in a movie of this scale, you need to care about more than just some selfish dude. That coupled with Leo constantly delivering the same lines and once again, his boyish good looks getting in his way, I never really bought his character nor cared about what happened to him.
Repeat Casting: Yes I LOVE Michael Caine and Cillian Murphy but the fact is, I kept feeling like I was in the wrong movie and it was distracting. I wanted Murphy to go mad and poison people, and Caine to pour some hot tea and give Batman some advice. Although they are amazing actors, Nolan would have been better off finding a whole new cast or at least making them look different or changing their accents! Their dress and demeanor was too similar and therefore confusing for the audience.

The Problem:

Nolan takes an incredibly hard concept to grasp and tries to make it understandable for mass audiences (something I’m sure the studios wanted in order to make back their massive budget), but in trying to make it both a mind blowing experience and easy to grasp for everyone, it lost its luster and falls short of a complete mind-blowing experience. Nolan is capable of taking this film one step further, cutting the unnecessary dialogue and shaping it into a mind-boogling and yet entertaining film. He’s done it before with Memento, he did a great job at handling Batman, and in this one I feel like we get Nolan at 80% and I can’t help but wonder what he could have done if he would have gone all the way.

I don’t know what the cause was, the script, the hero, the cut, or the studio, but something held this film back. This is a good film and enjoyable to watch, but not great and there was the potential in this to be something epic.

Rating: 8/10

Adrien Brody Confirmed For Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris

Today legendary director Woody Allen finally decided to reveal the full cast for his upcoming mystery project, Midnight in Paris. In the past we’ve picked up on one or two actors like Marion Cotillard and Owen Wilson and now we’ve learned that Oscar winner Adrien Brody has joined the film. Here’s the complete cast list along with a brief synopsis…

The Synopsis:

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS is a romantic comedy that follows a family travelling to the city for business. The party includes a young engaged couple that has their lives transformed throughout the journey. The film celebrates a young man’s great love for Paris, and simultaneously explores the illusion people have that a life different from their own is better.

The film stars Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Carla Bruni, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Michael Sheen, Owen Wilson, Nina Arianda, Kurt Fuller, Tom Hiddleston, Mimi Kennedy, Alison Pill and Corey Stoll.

Production on Midnight in Paris begins this summer in you guessed it…France! Out of this bunch of actors we’re mostly interested in seeing Tom Hiddleston because he’ll be playing the main villain in Marvel’s Thor next year. We want to see what he’s got!

New Inception Character Banners Look Amazing!

Holy crap! The marketing for Christopher Nolan’s Inception continues to get better and better. Warner Bros has just released seven new banners from the film and they look awesome! They feature each of the main characters and what appears to be their code names. We’re not sure what they mean, but we’re assuming they have something to do with their involvement in the “inception” dream process. Take a look…

Don’t these look badass? Leonardo DiCaprio is described as The Extractor, Ellen Page is The Architect, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is The Point Man, Ken Watanabe is The Tourist, Marion Cotillard is The Shade, Tom Hardy is The Forger, and Cillian Murphy is The Mark. We’re not even going to pretend we know what any of them really do but they sound intriguing.

The plot for Inception centers on DiCaprio’s character Cobb, an expert thief who can travel into people’s dreams and steal their secrets. For the most part he’s been successful and avoided capture but that track record might come to an end when he’s asked to do the impossible. Instead of taking someone’s idea he has to plant one in their subconscious at its very beginning, at its inception.

Inception hits theaters everywhere on July 16th.

Colin Farrell, Marion Cotillard Join Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis

Colin Farrell is tackling major roles left and right today. Earlier this morning we reported that he landed the coveted gig of the sexy vampire in DreamWorks’ Fright Night remake and now he’s signed on to star in director David Cronenberg’s upcoming film, Cosmopolis. Farrell won’t be alone because according to Variety, Oscar winner Marion Cotillard will be his leading lady.

The film will follow a multimillionaire on a 24-hour odyssey across Manhattan. Farrell will play the asset manager who loses all his wealth over the course of one day and Cotillard will play his wife. Cosmopolis is based on the Don DeLillo’s novel of the same name and has been adapted for the screen by Cronenberg. Production is scheduled to run from March to May in Toronto and New York.

Cosmopolis is Cronenberg’s next project after he completes work on A Dangerous Method, which stars Keira Knightly and Viggo Mortensen. Cronenberg always gets the most intense actors to work with him so it will be interesting to see how well he gets along with Farrell. Cotillard has already had her fair chair of intense bosses with her latest being Inception’s Christopher Nolan so this is nothing new to her.

Woody Allen Reveals Cast and Details of Midight of Paris

Woody’s at it again! The man just won’t quit! Especially when he’s signed into a three part deal with Allen’s Gravier Productions and Mediapro, the Spain-based company which also funded Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona and the upcoming You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger which will be released later this tear by Sony.

Today Woody Allen revealed the details and cast of his upcoming film that he’s beginning pre-production on titled Midnight in Paris starring the dynamic, star-studded cast of Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates and Carla Bruni. Also in the cast are Michael Sheen, Nina Arianda, Tom Hiddleston, Corey Stoll, Mimi Kennedy and Kurt Fuller. The film shoots this summer in Paris. Sounds like fun!

Marion Cotillard Cast in Woody Allen Film

Three time Academy Award winning director Woody Allen will begin production on his next film this summer, and he’s bringing Marion Cotillard with him. According to Deadline Hollywood, the French actress has landed a plum role in his latest project that will have her opposite Owen Wilson. This will be another one of many films that Allen has tackled in recent years that uses a European country as its backdrop.

The untitled film is being financed by the Spanish production company, Mediapro whom Allen currently has a three-picture deal with. With the project’s Parisian backdrop, Cotillard sounds like a logical choice, even amongst rumors that France’s First Lady Carla Bruni was in the running for a role. Cotillard is best known for her roles in Nine and Public Enemies, as well as her Oscar winning performance in La Vie En Rose.

Since the feature is still in the pre-production stages there hasn’t been a lot of info released regarding its plot. This shouldn’t come as a shock since Allen is known for keeping his projects low key until they’ve wrapped. In the meantime, be on the look out for his upcoming film, You Will Meet a Dark Stranger, which recently wrapped production.

Damon, Winslet, Law, Cotillard Join Soderbergh’s Contagion

Steven Soderbergh is currently gathering a group of acting “super friends” to star in his next feature film. No, we’re not talking about Knockout, or even the big screen bio-pic Liberace, we’re referring to Contagion. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, it’s because Soderbergh’s known for quietly putting together amazing films that no one ever hears about until he’s ready for them to.

According to The Playlist, Contagion will feature four noted Oscar nominees and winners with Kate Winslet, Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, and Jude Law rounding out the bunch. All the actors mentioned have deals being negotiated to star in the film that’s described as an action thriller. The story will center on the “outbreak of a deadly virus,” and will have a multi-strand storyline similar to Traffic.

The script for Contagion has been written by Scott Z. Burns, who previously penned The Informant! and The Bourne Ultimatum. Obviously, whatever he wrote in the film’s screenplay delivers, because it has a respectable group of actors on board ready to bring it to life. As for the much talked about Liberace, it will go into production in 2011 after filming on Contagion has wrapped.

Soderbergh is such a low key director but he always manages to attract top notch talent when it comes to his films. We’ll let you know more about the cast and story of Contagion as soon as the info becomes available.
